Heather and Jason Reynolds, are active members of the Prosper community. They have founded and implemented several of Prosper’s annual community events, including Summerfest, Pride in the Sky and Prosper Pumpkinfest. They also organize and facilitate the Meet the Candidates Forum each spring to introduce the public to their Town Council and School Board hopefuls and incumbents. Jason served several years on the Board of Directors for the Prosper Chamber of Commerce and Heather has served as the President of the Prosper Education Foundation, as well as the President of the Prosper Talonette Booster Club. The are involved in numerous other community organizations, groups and committees and have been for the better part of a decade.

The NEXT…

’all. We are less than 80 days from the end of the school year…80 DAYS!! Although it seems like we’ve just endured the longest winter EVER, I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that these next 11 weeks are going to fly by. Once we put away our winter coats and the sun finally comes out, it’ll feel like we’ve topped the highest point of the roller coaster ride and it’s 100mph to the end of the school year. I know some of you are ready, and truthfully, I sort of am too. What I’m not ready for is the “NEXT”. My fellow Class of 2019 parents know what I’m referring to…our babies will be walking across that graduation stage on May 25th, signaling the end of their time at Prosper High School. And as excited as I am for our little girl to achieve this milestone, I know that her “NEXT” will take her hundreds of miles away from the nest. She will do great, I’m not worried about her…she will make friends, be successful and become what God intends her to become. It’s those of us left at home that I worry about. We’ll instantly go from a family of 5, and odd number, to only 4. We’ll fit in a regular size booth when we go out to eat. We’ll have even teams when we tease each other at home. We won’t have constant arguments about borrowing clothes and makeup. We won’t need the SUV that seats 7 anymore.

So much change is on our horizon. When these 80 days are up, we’ll have one off to college, one entering PHS and one starting Kindergarten. Talk about emotions. Talk about change. Talk about the Next. These next several months are going to be a ride…and I know that so many of you are going through similar emotions and changes. That’s the thing about life…it changes every day. Lucky for us, we are all in this together. We are all experiencing the same emotions of watching our children grow, achieve and reach their God-given potential. We are all worrying about the NEXT. We are all cheering and celebrating these amazing human beings. We are Prosper! With Prosper Pride,

Town Matters

From the Desk of Mayor Ray Smith Among the handful of ancient philosophical proverbs that most of us remember and recite by heart is Lao Tzu’s “A journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.” He wrote that saying in 6 BC and it still rings true and valid today. I’m reminded of that truism because we’ve recently launched the 2019 Prosper 100-mile Challenge. Between now and June 1st, we’re encouraging residents to accept the challenge of walking, running or biking (or any combination of the three) for at least 100 miles. It’s part of the Town’s annual effort to get people thinking about their health and wellness. I’ve accepted the challenge myself, and I’m on my way to completing it, and I urge every resident, of every age, to at least try to complete it. The Parks and Recreation Department is asking participants to register on the Town’s website at https://www.prospertx.gov/residents/ parks-recreation/prosper-100-mile-challenge/ and the staff has even developed tracking sheets that help participants keep logs of their progress. Registration and tracking sheets are also available at the Town Hall reception desk. Those who accept the challenge and complete the 100 miles by June 1st will get a commemorative T-shirt and their names will entered into a raffle for a FitBit watch. While anyone can enter and chalk up the miles, only Prosper residents are eligible to win the watch. We’re hosting the 2019 Prosper 100 mile Challenge this year in place of participating in the ITS TIME TEXAS Community Challenge. You might recall that we took part in that statewide health promotion as a community and scored enough points to take the championship in our category each of the three years we entered.

I will always be grateful to the tremendous residents of Prosper who decided to take their health and wellness into their own hands and helped us win. Had we not won, I would have been forced to wear a T-shirt promoting the city of Lancaster. Lancaster’s Mayor Marcus Knight and I had a personal bet going during the final two years that we were participating in the contest. The Mayor of the losing community would have to wear a shirt of the opposing community. Our victory both years not only allowed me to avoid wearing a Lancaster shirt, but it forced Mayor Knight to wear a Prosper shirt to one of his Council meetings. So, how far is 100 miles, and how much of a commitment is it? Interestingly, the distance between Prosper Town Hall and Lancaster City Hall is almost exactly 50 miles. A walk, a run or a bike ride to Lancaster and back would put enough miles on your tracking sheet to get residents in the running for the FitBit! But, that’s not feasible for everyone, so here are other ways to get to the goal. If, on March 1st, a person starting walking for one hour a day, either outdoors or on a treadmill, at a very leisurely pace of 2 miles per hour, that person would get to the 100-mile goal by April 15th. A person jogging for thirty minutes a day would cover almost exactly the same distance by the same date. However, a person riding a road bike for an hour a day, starting on March 1st, would get to the 100-mile goal by March 8th. And, remember, the 100-mile goal is the minimum. Many participants will surpass the 100 miles, some by a lot, when all is said and done. I encourage you to get every member of your family to register and start tallying the miles. Lena, the boys and I have already begun and we’re well on our way to reaching the goal, and perhaps even surpassing it. We hope to see you and your family on the trails, parks, and roads. Remember, all it takes is that first step.

Prosper ISD School Board Calls for a Bond Election as it Prepares for Next Wave of Growth By Lynne Welch

Prosper ISD is experiencing rapid growth such that new students are enrolling in the district daily. The fastest growing district in DFW, every Prosper ISD campus is over capacity with hundreds more students enrolling every year. More than 3,000 homes were sold in Prosper ISD in 2018 alone. The population explosion that had Frisco on its toes has landed firmly in Prosper. To ensure that Prosper ISD can accommodate for all of the students in the district now and in the future, the Prosper ISD School Board has called for a bond election. A bond election is an important time in the life of a school and, thus, it is important that parents, taxpayers and community members have all of the necessary information. A bond is like a home mortgage. It is how the school district borrows money to build new schools. Before they can do this, they must ask voters for authorization to sell bonds. The bond was proposed to the Prosper ISD School Board from a Citizen Bond Committee, led by chair Mr. Cody Cunningham. The committee deliberated for weeks considering district needs. At the end of deliberations, they made a recommendation to the board. The Prosper ISD School Board accepted the amount as recommended. This year’s election will take place on Saturday, May 4th, 2019 with early voting options being April 22-30, 2019. The bond being requested is for $1.337 billion with the majority being allocated to address the growth in student enrollment through new schools and the rest for land purchases, capital improvements, support facilities and transportation. Prosper’s last bond election was in 2007 when voters approved the $710 million proposal with an 80% approval rate. The $1.337 billion Prosper ISD bond is not the largest bond to be called in the state of Texas. To put the timeliness of the bond into perspective, at the time of the last bond ($710 million), the Prosper ISD student population hovered around 2,800 students district wide. The Prosper ISD student population currently sits at 14,659 at the time of writing this article with the expectation of 32,801 students by 2025 and 40,387 students by 2028. It is estimated that this bond program could accommodate the growth projections through 2025. The most commonly asked question by taxpayers during a bond election is how it will impact taxes. The Prosper ISD tax rate is currently set at the state maximum of $1.67 per $100 of property valuation where it has been since 2011. This means that the bond will have $0 impact to the tax rate for current Prosper ISD taxpayers.

Prosper's Sweethearts Celebrate a Very Successful Season The Prosper High School Talonettes work hard all year long. Their season begins while most students are enjoying their summer break…however, these dedicated ladies spend 2-3 weeks of their vacation in the dance studio for Dance Camp, Training Camp and hours upon hours of practice. They learn most of their dances for pep rallies, football games, contest season and stand routines during the summer…and then work to perfect and clean them for the next 6-8 months. Always a work in progress, the leaders of the team otherwise known as the Dance Officers, choreograph and teach some of these awardwinning routines. They set formations, they practice, they clean, they polish, they practice, they tweak…was it mentioned that they practice?? This team reports to practice all year long at 7:00am, but during contest season, you can find them in the studio by 6:30am most mornings to prepare their award-winning routines…and last month, they won – and WON BIG! Their first year in 6A, competing against some of the most respected and renowned drill teams across the state…these girls took the floor with their heads held high and showed everyone what the Prosper High School Dance program was all about!! As their 2018-2019 season draws to a close, the last performance of the year will be at their Spring Show on April 27th. Held in the PHS Auditorium at 6:30pm, tickets will be $10 and will be sold at the door. This talented group of dancers will take to the stage one last time with the brand-new routines they will have created, practiced and polished in March & April. The theme is Magical World of Disney and the PHS Auditorium will be transformed into a palace fit for these princesses. Please join them as they recognize their graduating senior class, hang up their hats for the year and celebrate their amazing season!

Landscaping For A Peaceful Backyard

might want to find out all about that flower so you know if it fits into the scheme of things, including the time you can and want to devote to it. For instance, if you want to plant flowers that do not require much care, check with your local Nursery on those types of plants.

Ah, finally home from a hard day at work. Finally out of the traffic that is so often at a standstill. You are now away from the nagging boss, ringing telephones, the mirage of e-mails from customers. Now is your time for peace and tranquility. What better place to be than your own backyard? But wait, your backyard is plain, dull and boring. How many colors do you see? How many different kinds of plants and wildlife do you see? Then you start thinking, maybe I should do something to spruce up my backyard.

There are many types of themes for planting a garden. One of my favorites is an Aroma Garden. I love soft succulent smells and an aroma garden is one of the most therapeutic things you can do for yourself. You could create a small winding path out of brick, stone or shredded mulch and take a slow stroll and just inhale all the wonderful smells and enjoy all the wonderful sea of colors that you yourself created. You can say, “I did this all by myself.”

You are sitting and pondering about what you should do or how to do it. What if I put some flowers here or some bushes there? I wonder what it would be like if I put some big containers with grasses or tall growing flowers over there? Your mind starts running wild with ideas… “What’s new? What are some ideas that people have come up with that I would have never thought of?” You go and buy some gardening and landscaping magazines at your local store and you see some of the most beautiful ideas.

You can also add plants that attract butterflies, birds and other wildlife for you to enjoy. These kinds of plants usually require more watering than the average since they need to be more succulent so as to nourish the butterflies and birds. You could plant a trumpet vine plant that will attract humming birds. The humming bird is the most enjoyable bird of all to admire. With their acute speed and spectacular coloring, I can watch them for hours. Watching the butterflies should be the most relaxing of all. They are so graceful and colorful too. And with all the studies that are out today, colors and smells can do so much for your mental psyche.

So now you are thinking, will this idea or project work for me? Do a little research on your ideas. Say you would like a certain kind of flower. You

Perhaps you prefer the sound of running water…it has a calming quality also. You could set up a fountain. If you have a large enough area you

could set up a pond with a fountain in the middle; or you could create a small stream with rocks, so you have the sound of rushing water. With a pond you could add frogs or Koi fish. If you enjoy wildlife, having water available at all times will bring them in. Not only for your personal enjoyment, but also for the benefit of the animals. These are just a few of the multitude of ideas out there. After you have done some research like we do for our clients, you will be amazed at all the different tips, tricks and ideas that you have to choose from. Go ahead be a little daring. Think of your garden as nature’s canvas and you are the painter. Play with it. Mix and match colors. As with painting, if you don’t like something you can always re-plant it next year if you are not happy with what you have chosen. Remember one thing before you get started…design around your lifestyle! If you are constantly on the go, then keep things simple and plant things that require minimal maintenance. If you have a little extra time and enjoy gardening or find it somewhat therapeutic, then you may want to include a few higher maintenance things in your game plan. And when all else fails, you can always call a pro to help you out or at least steer you in the right direction. Question: Jimmie, I enjoy your column and website and have learned a lot. I have a huge perennial garden and was wondering how you add compost, fertilizer, black dirt, etc when the plants are so close together and I can’t work the soil for fear of disturbing the plants. Answer: Hi Lana, late winter/early spring is a great time to do this as the plants have died back to the ground and you don’t have branches/leaves to contend with. Mix aged manure/compost (I really like the Back to Earth compost brand available in most high-end nurseries) into the top portion of the soil, not disturbing the root systems. You can also follow with some mulch at this time to keep the weed populations down. Early spring (just before your perennials begin to leaf out) is good to begin with a first application of fertilizer (especially if not adding in aged manure/compost mixture). Apply a mild 5/10/5 slow release fertilizer in a ring around each plant with an additional 2 applications at 6 week intervals. Late bloomers will need an additional application in late summer. Broadcasting the fertilizer will also work as long as it doesn’t land on any leaves or in buds. Be sure to always water after fertilizing. Until next time...Happy Gardening!! Prosper Wrestlers Leave It All on the Mat By Dalana Squires

On February 22nd and 23rd, the Prosper High School Wrestling team sent nine State Qualifiers and two alternates to the Wrestling Texas 6A UIL State Championships at the Berry Center in Cypress Texas. The day before, the wrestlers were sent off to the Houston area in style. Led by the Prosper Drumline, and with students lining the halls in a show of support, the team marched through the halls of Prosper High School on their way to State. After they loaded the bus, Prosper Police and Fire escorted the athletes out of town in true Prosper fashion! The State Qualifiers were: LJ Richardson, JJ Baugher, Taylor Martinez, Carson Shaffer, Larissa Flores, CeCe Adams, Chase Parham, Cabe Parham, Rylan Bonds, Anthony Reid, and Caden Mills. By the end of the tournament, as the final whistle sounded and marking the end of their first season in 6A, two wrestlers stood on the State Championship podium. LJ Richardson, a sophomore in the 126-weight class, placed 6th, and JJ Baugher, a junior in the 128-weight class, placed 4th! Congratulations to LJ and JJ for their achievements! Spring Clean Up and Recycling Event March 30, 2019 Because of the drive-through convenience of Craig Street between First Street and Preston Road, both for participating residents as well as for vehicles transporting the collection bins, the ninth annual Spring Clean-up and Recycling Event returns to the same location on March 30. The Town’s drive-through, drop-off bulk trash and recycling collection program has gained popularity every year. The first few versions of the event were held along Main Street, almost exactly where the new Town Hall sits today. The move to the Craig Road location, with the drop-off zone directly in front of Judy Rucker Elementary School, was caused by the construction of that building. Free to all Prosper residents, the event starts at 8:00am and continues until noon, rain or shine. Unfortunately, residents of Artesia are not eligible for this service. “In many ways, the Craig Road location is a better fit for us,” says Kelly Vanaman, Utility Billing Administrator. “The advantages of having the

The recycling program will accept washing machines, clothes dryers, stoves, microwaves, and other appliances. NTMWD has been doing this for over 10 years, and good water quality that meets health standards has always been maintained.

What can I do if I don’t like the chlorine taste or smell?

NTMWD first disinfects water using ozone and chlorine as part of the treatment process to eliminate bacteria and viruses. Then, for most of the year, NTMWD also adds chloramine (chlorine + ammonia) as a secondary disinfectant to keep drinking water clean as it travels from the treatment plants through miles of pipes to homes and businesses. Each spring for one month, NTMWD temporarily suspends the use of ammonia and uses free chlorine as the secondary disinfectant to maintain water quality year-round.

Yes, chlorine is tested, and many other compounds in water are monitored continuously. NTMWD conducts a quarter million tests each year in a state-certified laboratory to monitor, regulate and report water quality. During the disinfectant change in 2018, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) also collected 117 samples from 31 public water systems that deliver NTMWD water to confirm compliance. In some cases, NTMWD is voluntarily increasing the frequency of testing above what is required.

The closer you live to the water treatment plant, the more noticeable the chlorine odor or taste may be. Some tips include refrigerating water in an open pitcher, adding a slice of citrus/ cucumber several hours before using or using a National Science Foundation (NSF/ANSI) approved water filter. Local water providers (cities or utility districts) who receive NTMWD water may help move the chlorine-disinfected water through the system faster by flushing water out of fire hydrants. Frequent flushing helps maintain the system, ensure high water quality and reduce the chlorine odor and taste. Performing system flushing in the spring also helps save valuable water during the summer months.

Yearly System Maintenance at Water Supplier to Begin March 4th

North Texas Municipal Water District Conducts Annual Procedure The North Texas Municipal Water District’s annual maintenance of the water distribution system that supplies Prosper homes and businesses starts on March 4 and concludes on April 1. The maintenance includes a temporary change in the way water is disinfected. Disinfection keeps drinking water free of harmful microorganisms, such as parasites and viruses. Normally, two chemicals are used in the disinfection process, chlorine and ammonia. During the month-long change, the water supplier uses only free chlorine to keep water disinfected as it travels through pipes. This is a common practice for as many as 40 percent of water providers which use the twochemical process.

Tests conducted by both NTMWD and the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) confirm that the quality of the water remains high each year during its annual disinfectant change, according to Prosper Water Education Coordinator Tristan Cisco. “When ammonia is removed during the maintenance period, some people may notice a change in the water because of the chlorine,” she said. “For them, taking some simple steps may minimize the taste and odor. For example, placing a pitcher of water in the refrigerator overnight or adding a slice of citrus to the water can help.” During the temporary chemical composition change, there may be instances where Prosper personnel may flush water from fire hydrants, helping the chlorine-disinfected water move through the system. The combination of converting to chlorine disinfectant and flushing the pipes helps maintain the system and keep water safe year-round. Eggs in Purgatory

Recipe courtesy of Laura Vitale Servings: 4 Eggs: 1 jar (23 ounces) Bertolli Rustic Cut Roasted Garlic Marinara Sauce 1/2 cup water 4 eggs salt, to taste pepper, to taste 2 tablespoons freshly grated Parmesan cheese 1 tablespoon chopped parsley Bread: 4 slices ciabatta, sliced about 1/2-inch thick 1 1/2 tablespoons Bertolli Extra Virgin Olive Oil 1 large clove garlic, peeled but not chopped To make eggs: In large skillet with high sides over medium-high heat, add marinara sauce. Pour water into empty jar, swish it around to lift any sauce left in jar and pour it over sauce in skillet. Bring to low boil. Using back of wooden spoon, make four small wells in sauce. Carefully crack eggs, one at a time, and drop each egg into a separate well in bubbling sauce. Sprinkle salt and pepper on each one, to taste; cover skillet with lid and cook 7-8 minutes, or until egg whites set. When eggs are cooked to desired doneness, sprinkle with Parmesan cheese and chopped parsley. To make bread: Char bread on bruschetta pan or indoor grill pan about 1 minute on each side until toasted. Once toasted, rub with clove of garlic on both sides then drizzle with olive oil. Serve eggs with hunks of charred garlic bread. Note: If using skillet larger than 12 inches, you can add eight eggs instead of four for additional servings.

Prep time: 15 minutes Cook time: 10 minutes Servings: 4 1 cup Bertolli Rustic Cut Three Cheese with Aged Asiago, Romano & Parmesan Sauce 1 prebaked pizza crust (12 inches) 1/2 cup shredded fontina cheese 1 ounce prosciutto, thinly sliced 2 cups arugula 1 tablespoon Parmesan cheese, grated 1 tablespoon toasted pine nuts 1 tablespoon Bertolli Extra Virgin Olive Oil 1 tablespoon Bertolli Balsamic Vinegar of Modena Heat oven to 450 F. Evenly spread sauce on crust then top with fontina cheese. Bake 10 minutes, or until cheese is melted, and remove from oven. Top with prosciutto. Prosper Mayor Challenges Residents to Go 100 Miles

Prosper’s annual community-wide push toward improving the health and wellness of residents is returning to a self-paced challenge that recognizes those who reach 100 miles in about 100 days. The 2019 Prosper 100 Mile Challenge is a return to a fitness regime that was last held four years ago and was deferred while Prosper residents competed in the ITS TIME TEXAS Community Challenge. Prosper residents won first place in their category each of the three years entered in that statewide competition. Reviving the 100-mile challenge maintains the Town’s emphasis on good health and reminds residents of the importance of regular exercise. Starting on February 15th and ending on June 1st, the 2019 Prosper 100 Mile Challenge asks individuals to keep track of their own progress toward reaching 100 miles by registering for the challenge, keeping track of walking, running or biking on an official tracking sheet, and submitting the results by June 6th. There is no age limit to participate, and while residents of other communities are encouraged to accompany them, only Prosper residents are eligible for any prizes or considerations. Registration and tracking sheets are available online at www.prospertx. gov or at Town Hall, 200 S. Main St. Completed sheets may be returned to the reception desk at Town Hall or scanned and uploaded electronically. Residents who complete the challenge will be invited to a Town Council meeting following the deadline to be publicly recognized for their efforts. Each will receive a commemorative T-shirt and their names will be entered into a drawing for a FitBit watch.

The Fellowship of People This past December, I announced to my church family some big news. After much prayer, I sensed the Lord was leading me to a new vocation in the business world. After 22 years of full-time church ministry, with the last five as Senior Pastor at FBC Prosper, this was a big step. So starting this month, I will no longer be the Pastor, but I’ll be a “layperson” in the church. I am so thankful my new role in the business world will allow us to stay in a Town that we love and in a church we love. The Bible speaks much about the local church, as you might expect. The Greek word for “church” is ekklesia. It literally means “the called-out ones.” I love that description of the Christ-follower. After all, Jesus’ favorite invitation to would-be disciples was “follow me.” He called them to be his disciples. There is another word in the Bible that describes the local church, and that is koinonia. It means to “share in,” or “to participate with.” What a great description of a local church – a group of people who share life together as they worship and serve Jesus together. Sadly, some church-goers don’t experience this. They haven’t invested time or energy into the koinonia part of church. Instead, Sundays feel more like a gathering of familiar strangers, rather than a group of committed believers who are doing life together – serving one another, praying for one another, encouraging one another, and blessing one another. That is church done right. One of my favorite scriptures about the local church is found Hebrews 10:24-25: 24 And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, 25 not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.

Christians need each other! That’s the message from Hebrews. There is no such thing as Christianity in isolation. We need to be deeply engaged in each other’s lives. And that is one of the greatest blessings of having a church family. The church was designed from the beginning to be a fellowship of people… not a building like we think about today. Growing up, I used to watch those old Lone Ranger TV shows. Black and white and all. I’m old. Some of you probably remember those. There is something quite paradoxical about the Lone Ranger -- he wasn’t alone! He had a colleague named Tonto. In the same way, there are no Lone Ranger Christians. We all need each other. We need people. We need that koinonia fellowship. Look again at verse 24 -- it tells us why we need to meet together regularly: “to stir up one another to love and good works.” Yes, that is exactly what we need. Without that stirring, we can become stagnant. That’s what I love about church. On a weekly basis, I get “stirred” – by worship songs, the heartfelt prayers, the hugs from our senior adults, the encouraging words, the fist bumps and high fives from the kids. We need to be stirred often – and by lots of spoons -- at least once a week and probably a lot more. We need more “spoons” in our lives! So even though I’ll no longer serve as Senior Pastor, I’ll still have the blessing of being an active part of an ekklesia with strong koinonia. And I sure hope you are too. There are many outstanding churches in Prosper, with amazing Pastors who have become friends over the years. If you don’t yet have a church home, I sure hope you’ll give one of them a try this Sunday.
