The Class of 2019 Spreads Their Wings Happy Graduation Class of 2019!! This year has been so bittersweet for us…so many of these students have grown up before our eyes in the last 9 years. The games, the parties, the pep rallies, the parades, the festivals…we’ve watched these kids in their element. We’ve seen them triumph, succeed and win…and we’ve been there when they didn’t. Our hearts have soared with pride when, win or lose, they stood together and sang our Fight Song. Each graduating class is special and we’re always so excited to watch them spread their wings and show the world what it means to be a Prosper Eagle…but we think this year may hit us just a little bit harder. We’ve watched through teary eyes as we’ve captured the “lasts” of this Senior class…their last first day of high school, the last football game, the last volleyball game, the last band trip, the last homecoming, the last concert, the last Spring Show, the last prom, the last awards banquet, the last baseball Senior Night. So many memories, and we’ve been blessed to have been a part of them. Our girl is a part of this class and we’ve grown to love her classmates, teammates and friends. They are truly a special group of kids. And we can’t wait to see where they go. As we wind down the school year, we’re trying to stay focused on the excitement of these graduates. They are about to start their final week of high school and enjoy the Prosper tradition of Senior Privilege Week. We’re excited for them, but not going to lie…we’re a little sad too. We’re going to miss these kids. When the next school year begins and we start all over again, a huge piece of our heart will be missing. We hope and pray that each of them finds as much happiness and joy in their new lives as they’ve given us over the years. We wish them the best of luck and know that no matter what life throws at them, they’re prepared because they were raised in our little town with people full of heart. With Prosper Pride,

Prosper ISD Athletic Hall of Honor Inaugural Class Inductees Prosper Independent School District is pleased to announce the inaugural class of the Prosper ISD Athletics Hall of Honor. The Hall of Honor is designed to recognize and celebrate those athletes, coaches, supporters and teams who have laid the foundation for what Prosper ISD Athletics is today. Prosper ISD Head Baseball Coach Rick Carpenter Coach Carpenter has been in Prosper ISD for 12 years. During that time, he has coached his teams to a State Championship in 2015 as well as to the Regional Semi-finals four times, Regional Quarterfinals twice and the Area Championship four times prior to the 2019 season. He has been named the District Coach of the Year 19 times in his career as well as Coach of the Year from many other circuits including USA Today, MLB Players, National Federation of High Schools and many others. He has coached 34 professional players including his son Matt Carpenter. Coach Carpenter is a member of the Elkins High School, Franklin High School and Texas High School Baseball Coaches Halls of Fame. 1984 State Championship Baseball Team The 1984 Prosper High School Baseball team was the first team to win a State Championship from Prosper winning the 1A State Championship in 1984 defeating Runge 18-7 and finishing with an overall record of 25-4. The team made three consecutive trips to the State tournament in 1982, 1983 and 1984. All-Tournament Team members from Prosper included: Derek Stansell (1B), Roger Ricketts (2B), Jimbo Smotherman (3B), Tim James (SS), Denny Webb (OF), Chris Tolleson (OF), Richard Furr (OF) and Glenn Cashon (DH). The team was coached by Robert Boyd. In addition to the All-Tournament Team members, the State Championship team consisted of Steve Harpole, Scott Bailey, Craig Constant, Mike Standerfer, Daniel Crosswhite, Robbie Butler, Bobby Reneau and Bobby Boyd. Jim Hughes Jim Hughes graduated from Prosper High School in 1951 where he was a four-year letterman in Baseball, Basketball and Football where he served as Captain. He attended Sam Houston State University (SHSU) where he was named All Conference leading his team in both baseball and basketball. Mr. Hughes was inducted into the SHSU Hall of Honor in 1991. Mr. Hughes signed a baseball contract with the Detroit Tigers and later scouted for the Mets and the Toronto Blue Jays. A US Army vet, Mr. Hughes is known today as Mr. Prosper where he is a Charter member of the Prosper Historical Society and received the Prosper Founding Heritage Citizenship Award as well as the Community Builder Award from the Masons. Donnie Garrett Donnie Garrett is a 1975 graduate of Prosper High School. While at PHS Mr. Garrett received 16 total letters with four each in Baseball, Basketball, Football and Track. He was a State Champion Pole Vaulter in 1972, 1973 and 1974 (the first pole vaulter in Texas to win three consecutive State Championships in any division) and was the first Prosper High School individual State Champion. He was also a state qualifier in the discus in 1975. A utility player in football, Garrett played running back, quarterback, half-back, defensive tackle and kicker. He was also named to the 2nd team All District team as a sophomore in Basketball. Woody Hamby Woodrow “Woody” Hamby graduated from Prosper High School in 1963. Mr. Hamby received four letters each in baseball, football and basketball and two letters in track. He was a long-time holder of the PHS record in the 100-yard dash with a time of 10.1 seconds. In Football he was the area scoring leader and was named to the Basketball First team AllDistrict team. Mr. Hamby received a baseball scholarship to Texas Christian University and played for the Cincinnati Reds until a career ending injury in 1964. The Inaugural Class will be introduced during halftime at the first home football game on Friday, August 30th, 2019 at 7:00 pm at the new Children’s Health Stadium at Prosper ISD and then formally inducted into the Hall of Honor at the ceremony on Monday, January 6th, 2020 in the community room of the new Children’s Health Stadium.

We’ve Come a Long Way! By Ray Smith

We’ve certainly come a long way. I don’t think anyone can dispute that the Town of Prosper has made some pretty significant strides in the last few years. In the areas of economic development, neighborhood construction, infrastructure, streets, major roadways, and many other obvious and not so-obvious ways, the Town has made great progress. Now, it’s time for us to concentrate on our downtown. Long-time residents will no doubt remember that, next to getting our own grocery store, one of the most asked questions for several years was about the development of our downtown area. Perhaps some of us were looking at other cities and towns and admiring their downtown areas, and thinking “When will we have our own?” That day is coming. Our downtown, by all accounts, will be tremendous! Over the last several years, the staff and Council have been talking about what our downtown will be like. We all agree that it should have its own sense of vibrancy and be a welcoming place that all of us can be proud of. It should have places to eat, shop, relax and have plenty of room to walk and sit and gather together. It should also be a place where we honor our past, celebrate our present and envision our future. Our Downtown Improvement Strategy includes all of these things, and more. And, not just because the Council or staff wants it that way. For years, residents have told us that they want to see these amenities in our downtown, and that’s the way it should be – improvements and enhancements driven by residents’ preferences. 14 | May 2019 WeArePROSPER.com

Over the last few years, the Town has invested over $30 million in street reconstruction, utility improvements, water and sewer line upgrades, right-of-way acquisition, lighting installations and other improvements. And, of course, our new Town Hall and Library have become our downtown’s anchors. Soon, we’ll see wide sidewalks, plenty of places to park, trees planted throughout the downtown area, inviting landscaping, and areas where people can enjoy the outdoors. We’ll have seasonal decorations, perhaps even festivals and events of all kinds. We have a lot to celebrate. Speaking of celebrating, I hope all of you will join us on Friday, May 24 from 4 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. for “DownTown Live!” It’s an afternoon filled with family fun, food, games, and music right in front of Town Hall. The free event will be capped with a performance by the highly entertaining Emerald City Band. Believe me, this band puts on an extremely exciting show. Look for more information on “DownTown Live!” on our website, www. prosperdtlive.com and make plans to attend. It will be a chance to come together as a community and share in the celebration of where we’ve been and what we’ve been through and where we’re headed. We’ve certainly come a long way.

GROWING PROSPER

Let’s talk about Mosquitoes! I am generally not a big fan of chemical products that harm our environment and avoid using toxic chemical insect repellents, yet the mosquitoes seemed to find me tastier than ever. My profession however requires me to be outside around clients’ residences and my solution was to wear what I called my ‘DEET sheet’, which was an old cotton sheet that had been sprayed with S.C. Johnson’s Off! Deep Woods formula. While this was highly effective, it wasn’t practical for use around kids and some clients, so I did research into safer, natural mosquito repellents. I learned that many so-called natural mosquito repellents don’t repel mosquitoes (e.g., ultrasonic electronic devices), but some are backed by reputable research and really do work. Mosquitoes have complex methods of detecting hosts and different types of mosquitoes react to different stimuli. Most mosquitoes are active at dawn and dusk, but there are also mosquitoes that seek hosts during the day. You can avoid being bitten by making sure you aren’t attracting mosquitoes, using attractants to lure mosquitoes elsewhere, using repellent and avoiding actions that diminish the effectiveness of the repellent. Mosquito Attractants Use this list of items and activities that attract mosquitoes as a list of things to avoid or that can be used as bait to lure mosquitoes away from you. Dark Clothing: Many mosquitoes use vision to locate hosts from a distance. Dark clothes and foliage are initial attractants. Carbon Dioxide: You give off more carbon dioxide when you are hot or have been exercising. A burning candle or other fire is another source of carbon dioxide. Lactic Acid: You release more lactic acid when you have been exercising or after eating certain foods (e.g., salty foods, high-potassium foods). Floral or Fruity Fragrances: In addition to perfumes, hair products, and scented sunscreens, watch for the subtle floral fragrance from fabric softeners and dryer sheets. Skin Temperature: The exact temperature depends on the type of mosquito. Many mosquitoes are attracted to the slightly cooler temperatures of the extremities. Many people are sensitive to plant oils. Some natural insect repellents are actually toxic. Therefore, although natural repellents provide an alternative to synthetic chemicals, please remember to follow the manufacturer’s instructions when using these products. Your back yard favorite spot... Consider some container plantings around that spot that will repel Mosquitoes. Citronella, Ageratum, Catnip, Basil, Lemon Thyme and Lavender. Question: Hi Jimmie, I have a row of bushes in my backyard (which gets really hot sun) that were soooo pretty last year! They were about 2-2.5 ft. tall. They have tiny red/pink/white little leaves and I remember them have these little thorns on the branches...I was so sad to see them this winter (just bare sticks) I now see very tiny little leaves coming out, but they are green? They actually do very well here with correct soil prep (hate wet feet) and love the sunshine! The sun is what actually provides the main ingredient for the shrub to turn all those great colors! Only drawback as you mentioned are the thorns on the branches. When it is fully foliated, they are darn near impossible to see. So never plant in a high traffic area and admire from afar! Question: Jimmie, my Hydrangea plant seems healthy but has only put out one bloom in the last 2 years? Do I need a second plant to make it flower?? Thank you for your time, Ashley C. in Prosper. Answer: Hi Ashley! You do not need a second plant to make a Hydrangea flower. You need ACID!! Hydrangeas are an acidic type plant that need to be fed acid and also needs very good drainage, they hate “wet feet”! After blooming you can cut it back. This fall after it defoliates add 1 tablespoon of Epsom salt to one gallon of water or 1 cup of Vinegar to a gallon of water and pour around the base of the plant. Repeat this next spring when it’s starting to leaf out. That generally works for us! Also, if you happen to be a coffee drinker you can pour the old grinds around the base of the plant. here’s no time like a hot summer picnic to let your patriotic spirit show. These all-American snacks featuring a classic favorite fruit – watermelon – are the perfect solution for nearly any summertime celebration. Watermelon is a patriotic picnic staple for countless reasons, not the least of which is that it’s a beloved treat that many people associate with memories from childhood. However, nostalgia isn’t the only reason adults are just as likely to gravitate toward watermelon at a summer event. Its sweet, cool and refreshing flavor also makes it a favorite for all ages. From a practical standpoint, watermelon is also quite portable, versatile and easy to serve, and with a composition of 92% water, it’s a simple way to sneak in some extra hydration on a hot day. Another benefit is its value; watermelon is one of the best values in the produce section among fruit, and just one watermelon can feed up to three dozen people. Serving watermelon at a party can be as simple as slicing wedges, or you can prepare a dish such as: n

A fruit basket, with the rind serving as a colorful bowl to hold the watermelon and other fresh fruits. A charcuterie board with a selection of fruit, cheese and protein for simple snacking. Sweet, Refreshing Summer Snacks Easy Summer Thirst Quencher A simple fruit-infused water can give your summer event an instant upgrade in no time at all. Add extra dimension and complexity to the flavor by adding some of your favorite herbs like basil and mint.

Watermelon-Infused Water 2 cups watermelon balls or cubes 1 cup other fruit, such as berries herbs, such as basil or mint Place watermelon, fruit and herbs in pitcher and cover with water. For best flavor, allow to chill in refrigerator at least 30 minutes before serving.

Red, White and Blue Watermelon Parfait 1 cup blueberries 1 container (6 ounces) Greek yogurt (vanilla, lemon or coconut) 1 cup watermelon, plus three pieces diced watermelon whipped cream, for serving In pint canning jar, layer blueberries, yogurt and 1 cup watermelon. Top with whipped cream and garnish with three diced watermelon pieces. Note: To make ahead or make thicker, drain Greek yogurt on paper towels to absorb some liquid.

Patriotic Fruit Salad 1 watermelon honeydew blueberries Slice 1/4 inch off bottom of watermelon, lengthwise, to create stable base. Use pencil to draw zig-zag lines for basket opening. Using paring knife, make cuts through rind. Carefully remove top section, pull out large chunks of flesh and cut them into 3-by-3-inch squares. Trim 3/4-inch thick slices off squares to use for cutting out stars with 1 1/2-3-inch, star-shaped cookie cutters. Use ice cream scoop to remove flesh from inside basket and cut scoops into quarters for fruit salad. Place in bottom of basket. Add honeydew and blueberries; stir to combine. Cut out white stripes from honeydew. Garnish top of fruit salad with watermelon stars, honeydew stripes and blueberries.

1/2 medium seedless watermelon, cut into wedges 1/2 cup fresh raspberries 1 1/2 cups fresh blueberries 10 strawberries (dipped in white chocolate, if desired) 5 ounces fresh goat cheese 1/2 cup toasted, salted cashews 2 ounces cured meats like prosciutto, pancetta, coppa, salami, soppressata, sausage or pepperoni 1 Honeycrisp apple, cored and sliced lemon juice fresh basil leaves On large board or platter, arrange watermelon, raspberries, blueberries, strawberries, cheese, cashews, meat and apples. Drizzle fruit with lemon juice. Garnish with basil leaves before serving.

pint fresh, washed blackberries wooden skewers seedless watermelon, flesh cut into 1-inch cubes angel food cake, cut into 1-inch cubes (white part only) dips, such as yogurt, chocolate, caramel or marshmallow (optional) Thread five blackberries on each of five skewers, followed by alternating watermelon and cake cubes. On remaining skewers, alternate watermelon and cake so first and last cubes are watermelon. Place skewers on platter; fruit and cake will create stars and stripes when lined properly. Serve with dips, if desired.
