Blessings Abound We are so excited to celebrate this month with you…our 100th issue of PROSPER Magazine!! As you can probably already tell, we’ve added a few exciting upgrades to the magazine – we hope you love the changes and love the new design! We have been so incredibly fortunate to have been allowed into Prosper homes every single month over the last eight years! We’ve watched our town explode with growth, we’ve seen our students win State Championships, we’ve opened new schools and facilities and we’ve welcomed new businesses to town. The ride has been incredible, and we are indeed blessed to be in this community and doing what we love…we cannot wait to see what the next 100 issues brings to our town!! Something near and dear to our hearts is giving back to the community, and although we live in a very affluent area, there are many of our neighbors and children’s classmates who are in need of some type of help. And sometimes, it’s the ones you least expect to need help that are struggling the most. During this season of thankfulness and giving, we urge you to reach out to those around you and offer blessings in whatever way you can. Our community is amazing at rallying around one another – it’s one of our favorite parts of living here. Please take a look at some of the wonderful organizations we have within Prosper that you can plug in to and find where you can make a difference…giving of yourself is truly the best blessing! Happy Thanksgiving y’all!

Meaningful and Fun Family Thanksgiving Traditions There are certain traditions we all recognize for Thanksgiving… football, turkey, pumpkin pie and the Macy’s Day Parade are staples. Thanksgiving should be made up of customs that you will remember forever. Passing down family traditions to your children and sharing them with a table full of friends and family is pure joy. If you are looking for new ways to incorporate some unique family traditions, we’ve provided a few!
Have a Special Breakfast Everyone knows that Thanksgiving belongs to the turkey, but why not start a new tradition that includes a special breakfast as well? Most mornings are hectic and rushed…leaving little time for an old-fashioned family breakfast. Start Thanksgiving morning off with a relaxed meal of family favorites that is sure to set the scene for plenty of gratitude. Hot, fresh pumpkin bread, pancakes and maple syrup or homemade biscuits with country sausage gravy…what a perfect way start the holiday!
Pass Around a Gratitude Journal Begin with a beautiful blank journal that your family can use for years to come. Then, before the turkey is served, pass the journal around the table and ask all of the guests to write at least one thing they are thankful for. An adult can record for children that are too young to write. Over the years, the journal will become filled with cherished comments and memories. It’s fun to reflect on these messages at Thanksgiving celebrations and see how your family’s gratitude reflections have changed over time.
Create a Thankful Tree Place bundles of curly willow in a sturdy, tall vase. Spread out the branches to allow for plenty of room to hang the leaves. Buy or cutout a mix of paper leaves in fall hues of orange, red, yellow and brown. Using a hole punch, make a hole at the base of each leaf. Give each guest a leaf and pen to write what they are thankful for. Once they are finished with their gratitude message, have them tie their leaf to the branch with 3” strips of gold, white or black baker’s twine. Before sitting down for 10 | WeAreProsper.com
your Thanksgiving meal, invite your family guests to read and enjoy the notes of gratitude. Keeping the leaves year to year will help your family remember how many blessings they have in their lives.
Have a Table Toast Sometimes, in the stress of preparing the meal and readying the house for family and guests, the most important part of Thanksgiving is forgotten…being thankful! If passing around a journal seems too formal or the Thankful Tree doesn’t seem to fit with your family, try a roundtable toast. Have each guest raise their glass – even if it’s a sippy cup – and make a toast for what they’re thankful for. It’s a great way to start Thanksgiving dinner and share some laughs and appreciation with those you love most.
Kick Off the Holiday Season This year, Thanksgiving is very late in the month. So, instead of fighting the urge to delay the Christmas season, embrace it! Buy matching Christmas pajamas for all the kids – adults too if you want – and wrap them up in Christmas paper. After your last bite of pumpkin pie on Thanksgiving evening, let the kids unwrap their first Christmas gift of the season. Your family will enjoy a special night of togetherness while in your matching pajamas watching your favorite holiday movie.

Town Matters
By Mayor Ray Smith Demographers tell us that the fastest growing segment of our population in the United States is people over 50 years of age. The people who were born in 1969 and before are joining the so-called Baby Boomer generation. Baby Boomers are described as people born between 1944 and 1964, and they (we) are already a large part of the population. As a country we are indeed aging and aging rapidly. While that fact may sound alarming to some, I actually like the fact that my audience is growing. Twice a year, I have the pleasure of speaking to Prosper residents over 50 years of age. We host the “Breakfast with the Mayor” in the spring, and “Lunch with the Mayor” in the fall. The staff puts on these two events to allow our active adult community to come together, share some fellowship, and listen to me as I present a modified “State of the Town” presentation. This year’s “Lunch with the Mayor” was the best attended of all these events so far. We filled the community room at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and enjoyed a lunch catered by the Olive Garden restaurant. During my presentation, I shared that Prosper’s residential and commercial communities are rapidly growing. Businesses, mostly retail, are making Prosper their home, and residents are moving in daily, becoming our new neighbors. The newcomers, and this is important, are mostly up-and-coming adults with young families. If that trend continues, and I think it will, the Town of Prosper will have a wonderful mix of young and mature residents, ready to pull together as we move our community forward. The presentation I made at the luncheon is on the Town website on the City Council page under the Government tab. This month is special in many ways, but mostly because of the Thanksgiving holiday. The time of year when we gather as families, share a special meal, and offer our thanks for the many blessings we enjoy has always had a special place in my heart. Families who may be separated by miles or by other measures are moved to come together, set aside their differences, hold hands, express thanks, and break bread together. It truly is a very special time for many of us. There are, however, families who do not share in the special bonds that highlight the Thanksgiving holiday. If you or someone you know is feeling left out or neglected, my hope is that some person or group of persons reach out and make contact. Many churches and nonprofit agencies can, and often do, extend loving and gracious hands to those in need, and my hope is that no one spends the holiday alone, unless they really want to. Town offices will close on Thanksgiving and the day after to allow our employees the opportunity to spend their holidays with their families. Emergency personnel, as they always do, will be on duty, protecting us. If you see a police officers, firefighter or dispatch operator, please express your thanks for their devotion and dedication. And speaking of holidays, don’t forget to attend the Prosper Christmas Festival, this year set for December 7 from 3:00pm to 7:00pm in the downtown area. Look for me, I’ll be the one lighting the community Christmas Tree! Photo courtesy of the Town of Prosper

Thanksgiving Tablescape: Woodsy Elegance Thanksgiving is right around the corner which means now is the time to get comfortable inside your home and decorate for your family feast. Creating a Tablescape is an easy way to add Thanksgiving décor and dress up your dining room. Using a mixture of pumpkins, candles, foliage and flowers, group your items together to create a decorative arrangement. You don’t need to spend a fortune – in fact, by using natural materials and repurposing items you already have, you can create a homespun table that will welcome your guests and celebrate your blessings. We incorporated a mix of natural elements and calming colors in this dining room for a look of woodsy elegance. We started with a beautiful floral arrangement centerpiece filled with our favorites – lilies, chocolate colored sunflowers, orchids and creamy white hydrangeas. From there, we added birchwood chargers topped with white china plates with gold trim, as well as some gold accent pieces. Fragrant mint colored candles tucked into white and gold candlesticks, fresh eucalyptus and pinecones cast a note of laid-back romance and woodsy glam to the holiday table.
Antique farmhouse ceramic planter showing off this lush arrangement of autumn’s most gorgeous flowers. The fabulous fall centerpiece includes fresh hydrangeas in cream, brown sunflowers, rust red lily, cream white lilies, burgundy cymbidium orchids, and solidaster accented with fresh seeded and silver dollar eucalyptus greenery. On the serving buffet, we hung our grapevine wreath over the mirror to create our focal point. Incorporating elements of varying heights with vases and candlesticks, the buffet always gives the eye something to focus on without being overwhelming. We kept the woodsy elegance theme by using birch bark candles and fresh eucalyptus right along with the gold accent pieces and creamy colors. To tie in the colors from the floral centerpiece, we added colorful candles and sprigs of eucalyptus to the gold candlesticks. A few pumpkins and pinecones pull it all together for a wonderful autumn display.

In His Presence
Give Thanks in All Circumstances By Pastor Jack Graham
Thou that hast giv’n so much to me, Give one thing more, a grateful heart. Not thankful, when it pleaseth me; As if thy blessings had spare days: But such a heart, whose pulse may be Thy praise. —George Herbert Every year at the end of November, we join family and friends over a great feast to reflect upon blessings and give thanks to the Lord. Thanksgiving Day can be a wonderful time, a holy time, of pausing to express gratitude to God. But just like prayer and praise and listening to Him, thanksgiving isn’t only meant for special gatherings, for a date on the calendar, for a once-a-year celebration. The psalmist says in Psalm 34:1, I will bless the Lord at all times; His praise shall continually be in my mouth. And the apostle Paul implores the church in 1 Thessalonians 5:18 to “give thanks in all circumstances.” In fact, it is the “will of God in Christ Jesus” that we do so. Gratitude enhances our relationship with the Lord not only by encouraging a spirit of joy but also by preparing our hearts to bless others ... to serve others ... to do the Lord’s work. One of God’s greatest blessings is calling His people to be a part of something greater than we could possibly know—the eternal impact of what we are doing as the mission of Christ followers. Every day, we should give thanks for the glorious opportunity to serve a sovereign and faithful God whose love endures forever. No matter what you are experiencing, good or bad, thanksgiving will not change your circumstances. But, thanksgiving and praise will change what your circumstances do to you. Your circumstances in life will either destroy you or can be a blessing to you if you learn how to give thanks. And when we say thank you, we recognize that beyond us and beyond our circumstances and beyond what’s going on in our lives, there is a sovereign God who loves us, who has a wonderful plan for our lives, who plans to give us a future and a hope, who is overall, above all, in all, through all, and in everything! So, today … and every day … we give thanks. Dr. Jack Graham is pastor of Prestonwood Baptist Church, which has campuses in Prosper, Plano and Dallas.

The Perfect Turkey
Why all the fuss and stress over the Thanksgiving turkey? Well, it’s the centerpiece of the entire meal and there is usually a table full of people that you don’t want to disappoint…so it’s a BIG deal! But here is a complete fuss-free and easy method for cooking a perfect, beautiful Thanksgiving Turkey. You don’t even need an expensive roasting pan – the real key to a perfect turkey is to not overcook it. Plan ahead to get the timing right and you’ll come out with a gorgeous, super juicy, perfectly cooked bird. WHAT SIZE TURKEY DO YOU NEED: Buy about 2 pounds of turkey per person…that way you’ll have leftovers! HOW TO THAW YOUR TURKEY: Allow plenty of time for your turkey to thaw. A good rule of thumb is to allow one day in the refrigerator for every five pounds of meat. It’s a good idea to give yourself one extra day, just to be safe. Also make sure you set your turkey on a cookie sheet or a pan to catch any liquid as it defrosts. DON’T WASH THE TURKEY: If you wash your turkey in the sink, you will contaminate your sink. Instead, remove it from its packaging, dry it off with some paper towels and prepare it for the oven. Any bacteria on the turkey will be killed in the hot oven while it bakes. DON’T BRINE OR BASTE THE TURKEY: If you’re using a high-quality turkey from the store (like a Butterball), brining is an unnecessary step. You can do it if you want, but you can achieve a moist turkey without it. Basting is also unnecessary. It requires you to constantly open the oven, which causes it to lose heat and take longer to cook, which could lead to a dry turkey. 20 | WeAreProsper.com
DON’T COOK STUFFING INSIDE THE TURKEY: If you try to put stuffing inside the cavity of the bird, the turkey will be overcooked by the time the stuffing reaches a temperature that’s safe to eat. Instead, use the Good Ole’ Country Dressing recipe and cook it in a casserole dish. You can then fill the cavity of the bird with things that will give it flavor: salt, pepper, garlic, onion, apples, oranges, pineapple or celery. TEST THE TURKEY WITH A THERMOMETER: The only way to really tell if it’s cooked to 165 degrees Fahrenheit is by using a thermometer. Once it reaches 160 degrees F, take it out, tent it with foil and allow it to cook that extra 5 degrees inside the foil tent. LET THE TURKEY REST: After removing it from the oven, let it rest for 15 – 40 minutes in the pan and tent with foil. If you’re using the drippings for gravy, move the turkey from its pan to a cutting board and tent it with foil while it rests there.
HOW TO PREPARE: First, remove the thawed bird from its packaging. Remove the neck and the bag of giblets and either discard or save them for gravy. Pat the turkey with paper towels. Next, season the cavity with salt and pepper. Stuff it with quartered apples, oranges, pineapples, onions, celery and fresh herbs. To help the turkey sit flatter, tuck the wings underneath and set it on a roasting rack inside a roasting pan, or on a bed of chopped veggies in a disposable roasting pan.
Next, use your fingers to loosen and lift the skin above the breast and smooth a few tablespoons of butter, garlic and herbs underneath. Use twine to tie the legs together and then slather the outside of the turkey with more butter, garlic and herbs. That’s it! You are now ready to let your oven do the rest of the work! Place the turkey into your preheated oven (350 degrees F) and bake for approximately 20 minutes per pound. Check the turkey about halfway through cooking to see if the skin is golden brown, and then place a large piece of tinfoil over the meat to keep it from overcooking.
GOOD OLE’ COUNTRY DRESSING 1 pound bulk breakfast sausage 12 ounce bag of Pepperidge Farm Country Style Cube Stuffing 2 cups chopped celery 1 large onion, chopped 7 cups chicken stock 1 teaspoon dried sage leaves 1 tablespoon poultry seasoning 1/4 stick butter, melted Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Cook sausage in a large skillet until it starts to brown. Add melted butter, celery and onion and sauté for 5 – 10 minutes, or until transparent. Empty the cube stuffing into a large bowl and then pour the sausage, celery and onion mixture on top. Add the chicken stock, salt, pepper, sage and poultry seasoning and mix well. Pour dressing mixture into a greased pan and back until cooked through and golden brown, about 45 minutes. Recipe from Barbara Novak

NATIONAL CHARITY LEAGUE www.NationalCharityLeague.org The NCL, Inc. story began in 1925 when a small group of women founded the organization in Los Angeles. They supported the American Red Cross by making layettes and assembling food baskets. The women engaged their daughters’ support, and by 1938, the daughters formed their own group. In 1947, both groups united to become the nation’s first mother-daughter philanthropic organization, calling itself “National Charity League.” National Charity League, Inc. (NCL, Inc.) is committed to the development of mothers and daughters as leaders and is dedicated to improving local communities through hands-on volunteerism. The NCL Experience inspires and empowers women to succeed as confident, well-rounded and socially aware contributors to society. Mothers (Patronesses) and daughters (Ticktockers) participate in a six-year core program of community service, leadership development and cultural experiences. Members who continue their affiliation with the organization after high school graduation are welcomed throughout their lives as Sustainers. As a result of the NCL Experience, the participants become confident, well rounded and socially aware contributors to society. Remember When
Prosper in the Early Years: The Settle Family
Before the Civil War there were not many families in the western part of Collin County. A few families had settled in the area but most of the settlement began after the Civil War. Nathan Chris (Chris) and John Settle were born in Kentucky. Chris was born May 14, 1857 and John was born January 31, 1855. Both of their parents died in 1870. A man by the name of John Allen then purchased the farm in Kentucky and had a brother named Billy Allen who had moved to Frisco, Texas. John and Chris wanted to come to Texas to live but had to convince their brother and sisters (there were a total of seven children in the family) to let them come to Texas at such an early age. They had an aunt and uncle that were coming to Texas from Kentucky and wanted to come with them. The couple’s name was Wesley Goodnight, who was kin to Charles Goodnight. Charles had settled in the panhandle of Texas and became well known for his ranches and cattle. The Wesley Goodnight’s were coming to Texas to settle in the Rock Hill area. The family decided to let the two young teenagers travel to Texas via covered wagon. John wrote in one of his letters that is was a sad day when he left his three sisters, brother, grandmother and an aunt and uncle that he would never see again. They left Bowling Green, Kentucky and traveled to Memphis, Tennessee. From there they got on a steamboat and went five miles up the Mississippi River to land in Arkansas. They had

two covered wagons and an extra horse. They travelled over very rough and muddy roads, forged many creeks and crossed on many ferryboats. They survived on fish and squirrel. They arrived in Little Rock, Arkansas and then the corner of Oklahoma, crossing the Red River into Texas near Dekalb. John saw his first Indian in Oklahoma just before he crossed the Red River. They came through Paris, Bonham, Honey Grove and then to McKinney. They came through McKinney and finally to the flats of Western Collin County. The prairie chickens were plentiful, and they would sit in their wagons and kill all they needed to eat. John and Chris stayed with their Uncle Offie Button who had come to Denton County earlier. They left Kentucky on September 23, 1871 and arrived in Collin County on November 15, 1871. John and Chris stayed with the Button family for a couple of years and worked for them on the farm. Chris said he made $160 the first year and $175 the second. With the money they had saved they purchased a Yolk of Oxen and then decided to purchase some land northwest of the current town of Prosper. Prosper hadn’t been settled yet, so here were these two young kids that were buying land without a house on it, or even roads leading to it. The Lakes of Prosper development is currently located on some of the Settle Land.
John and Chris travelled 40 miles to Dallas in a wagon to get the lumber to build their house. They built only one room and lived in it for over a year. The stove was a small box. Chris said he had a pan and lid and put it inside the stove to bake bread. They sat on homemade stools and slept on straw mattresses and bedsteads that Chris made. In 1879, John married Fina (Viney) Cline, so they had to add a 2nd room to the house. They received all their supplies from Jefferson, Texas and used oxen teams to pull the wagons. Jefferson was close to the Louisiana border and probably took at least a week to get there. They would take their cotton to Jefferson and bring back groceries and supplies. Jefferson was a port and boats would come up the river and deliver needed supplies. Chris said that some families had five or six yolk of oxen and drove them to Jefferson and back all through the spring and summer. Mr. Howe had built a house near Chris and John Settle. They had no church so Mr. Howe let them use one room at his house to worship. This house is still standing today, just south of Prosper Trail on the west side of Coleman. It is known as the McElhannon House. The McElhannon’s had a mercantile store and a grocery store in Prosper. Before there was a Richland School, Mr. Howe also let them use this room for a school. L.L. Naugle, who was living in Rock Hill at the time, preached his first sermon in this room. L.L. became a pastor in Rock Hill and when the Methodist Church moved to Prosper in 1902, he became the pastor. His brother, Benjamin Naugle, became postmaster of Prosper in 1896, while the Post Office was in Richland, and continued until 1942, for a total of 46 years. Chris became the superintendent of the Sunday School and continued for years.

Fall Jackets: Our Favorite Layer Players Meet your new BFFF (Best Friends For Fall). Not as heavy-duty as a puffer, not as lightweight as a cardie, our fall jacket picks are the perfect coldweather companions. This season, our favorite silhouettes are dipped in autumn’s jewel-toned hues, and cleverly crafted in faux leather, super soft suede and sturdy cotton. Wear these smart styles over your fall staples––from plush sweaters and plaid shirts to bodyskimming knit dresses and distressed denim––and top off your look with a warm layer of cool.
THE MODERN LEATHER JACKET Nothing says “cool” quite like a leather jacket—even those of the faux variety. Maybe it’s that bad-boy vibe left over from the rock bands of the 60s, 70s, and 80s. Whatever it is, this versatile all-weather closet staple can put a casual chic spin on just about any outfit. Team it with a pair of distressed boyfriend jeans and a plaid shirt for a low-key look, or layer it over a little black lace dress for a fancier affair.
THE CHIC CARGO JACKET Utilitarian in more ways than one, the cargo jacket makes an appearance this season in bright colors (racy red!) as well as the original army green. This lighter weight jacket can be styled in a multitude of ways, whether you’re pairing it with a soft tee and comfy leggings or getting your girly on in a flowy dress and classic pumps. Keeping your other pieces neutral sets up the bolder-hued jackets for instant style stardom.
THE EDGY MOTO JACKET Little did Irving Schott know that his first motorcycle jacket, the “Perfecto”, designed in 1928 and sold for an astounding (for the times) $5.50, would go on to become one of our most coveted street-style jackets. No longer relegated to rough-riding Harley dudes, the moto has the uncanny ability to turn just about any ensemble into something sleek and special—even more so this season, thanks to richly-colored riffs on the classic black style. We love the contrast of a sugary-sweet floral dress paired with a stretch twill moto. Go ahead, channel your inner rocker chick.
THE SUPPLE SUEDE JACKET Think leather brushed to a buttery softness, and you’ve got suede. A suede jacket will keep you toasty without that bundled-up, bulky look. While it does require a bit more care (spills or stains can be a pain, and don’t get us started on rain!), we think it’s worth the extra effort. A suede jacket instantly elevates your outfit. Try a tailored silhouette with your favorite high-waisted jeans and a cute crop top. The seasonal juxtaposition is sure to be a crowd-pleaser.
THE BOMB BOMBER A timeless piece of outerwear traditionally made of leather, the bomber originated in the first World War and was worn by flyboys to keep the chilly cockpit temperatures at bay. Today, this versatile jacket—ingeniously reinvented for civilians—is offered in a multitude of colors, cuts and fabrics. We’re especially fond of quilted olive (not quite military, but close). A less structured hemline gives it a femme feel. Wear it for warmth with your favorite jeans and booties, or pair it with a frilly frock to add edgy attitude to your outfit.
THE TIMELESS JEAN JACKET Long, cropped or somewhere in between, denim jackets are one of the most versatile closet staples and a top pick for this season’s love affair with layering. We’re currently crushing on the feminine take of the working man’s classic Trucker jacket with its flapcovered pockets and button-up front. Try it splashed in a stone wash, layered over your favorite knit dress (or even a summery frock!). Add tights and booties for warmth. Of course, jeans work equally well—just make sure the dye is not too matchy-matchy and you’re golden.
Article compliments of Stitch Fix. With such a plethora of fall jackets to choose from, it’s hard to know where to start. Ask your Stitch Fix Stylist to surprise you with a toasty topper to complement your unique style. Visit www.stitchfix.com to schedule your fix! 26 | WeAreProsper.com

Growing Prosper
FALL LAWNCARE 101 M
any of us neglect our lawns as soon as autumn leaves start to fall. Learn how to put your grass to bed for the winter — and how to give it a healthy head start next spring. When it comes to lawn care, people tend to think in terms of spring and summer. As soon as the weather turns warm and the grass starts growing, they break out the spreader, the mower and related gear and get to work. What they fail to realize is that by repairing the damage that summer may have caused during the fall, they will actually improve the lawn so it will be healthier and have fewer weeds in the spring. What is the most important thing a person can do in the fall to see the lawn through the winter and prepare it for next spring? Feeding is the most important thing you can do for your lawn this fall. Many folks who feed their lawn for the first time in fall remark that they cannot believe the difference in their lawn the following spring. At first, a lot of the improvement in your lawn will be dramatic, as you see recovery from summer damage. But don't stop there. The real improvement comes with the second feeding in late fall. This second fall feeding helps to lock in the early fall gains in turf vitality and carry them forward into next spring. This late-fall winterizing gives your grass everything it needs to prepare for winter. The roots will absorb and store these vital nutrients. The grass will continue underground root development until the ground freezes solid. And once spring arrives, the grass plant will quickly tap this stored-up nutrition to stimulate growth and burst into a vibrant, deep green lawn. In fact, a lawn fed twice in the fall will be the first to green up in the spring. What are the most common mistakes that homeowners make in preparing their lawn for winter? 1. They let the grass starve, thereby letting the lawn go into the winter without the kind of nourishment that can really build up the roots. 28 | WeAreProsper.com
2. They allow tree leaves to smother the grass, robbing the lawn of the sunlight it needs for photosynthesis. 3. They discontinue mowing. Grass should be mowed until it stops growing. Maintain the same mower height setting throughout the fall. Don't be tempted to mow the grass short going into winter. Is there anything about leaf removal or mulching that can improve or harm a lawn? If leaves are quite heavy, and you are using a mulching mower, you might consider depositing the grass clippings and chopped up leaves on your compost pile rather than letting them sit on your lawn. This will help keep the clumps of chopped leaves from smothering the grass. Is potassium the key to seeing the lawn through the winter? For example, I've noticed that Scott's Winterizer (22-3-14) has a high amount of potassium (14) compared to spring fertilizers. Scotts Winterizer is high in nitrogen [the first number] and potassium [the last number]. These are the most important nutrients for fall feeding. They work together to nourish the grass plant during that important rootgrowth period in fall. The phosphorus [the middle number] is the lowest, as mature grass plants do not require much phosphorus. Here's an extra tip: Spend a few bucks more for the higher-quality fertilizer. There is a big difference in how fertilizers work, even if they have the same nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium [N-P-K] numbers on the bag. Additional tips regarding fall watering, dethatching and aerating: Fall is a great time to go after weeds like clover, ground ivy and dandelions. In fact, you can save time by using a special winterizer weed and feed instead of regular winterizer. Just be sure to apply your weed and feed to moist foliage on a day when rain is not forecasted for 24 hours. You will

Also, lawns need about an inch of water a week to thrive. If you are not getting enough rainfall, you may need to water your lawn. Use a rain gauge to determine how much rainfall you are receiving and how long you should run your sprinklers. It's best to apply a half inch of water when irrigating to get the water down deep. Finally, aerate the lawn if you find that it has more than a half inch of thatch. Aerating will help the thatch to decompose and will open the soil to more oxygen. Leave the plugs on the lawn surface where they can break down. Question: Jimmie, I spent most of my weekend trimming some of the trees on our property. I know I’ve seen some people put a black paint on the limbs when they prune and others that don’t. Is this necessary for me to do? Thank you for your columns, my wife and I try to read all of them and find them very informative. Collin T. in Prosper. Answer: Hi Collin, actually it’s not a yes or no answer. It’s more time of year when you’re doing your pruning. Most trees have a dormant period, usually around late November until around mid-February. If possible, that is your best time to prune. Sometimes other issues come about and pruning must be done during the growing season. During this time of year, the tree is full of sap which will leak out of those wounds and attract insects. Thus, the need to seal the wound. During dormancy, all the sap is in the base or root structure of the tree – therefore pruning paint would be optional. Until next time…Happy Gardening!! And HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO YOU ALL!! -Jimmie

A Cape Cod Thanksgiving By Heather Reynolds
C
ape Cod is known as a wonderful vacation for good reason: It’s a beautiful oceanside area with miles of unspoiled beaches, hiking trails, ocean vistas and sand dunes. October to April is the Cape’s off-season, which means that the exorbitant prices for accommodations fall during this time. And while the prices are low, there are plenty of things to do in Cape Code during November – without the crowds of the summer tourist season. Daily temperatures are fairly mild, sometimes reaching up to 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Cape Cod is known as one of the top cultural centers of Massachusetts. There is an abundance of museums of all types, catering to enthusiasts, children, history buffs and nature lovers. You’ll want to be sure and visit the Museum of Natural History, the Children’s Museum, the Provincetown Art Association and Museum, the Sandwich Glass Museum and the Nantucket Whaling Museum. And due to its rich history, New England is indisputably the best region to go antiquing. November is a fitting time to visit, as it was at the Cape’s northern tip that the Mayflower first landed on November 11, 1620, bringing the Pilgrims to the “New World”. It was in 1621 that the Pilgrims and Native Americans held their three day Feast – The First Thanksgiving. And what better way to honor this historic milestone than a trip to the Cape to celebrate! Each year, during the weekend before Thanksgiving, the America’s Hometown Thanksgiving celebration is held in Plymouth. The celebration of Thanksgiving becomes history-brought-to-life as Pilgrims, Native Americans, Soldiers, Patriots and Pioneers climb out of the history books and onto the streets of Plymouth. And this year’s event kicks off the 2020 Celebration Series which celebrates the 400th Anniversary of the Mayflower Pilgrims’ First Landing in 1620! Another fun tradition that you won’t want to miss is on November 27th, when more than 3,000 lights will shine during the Annual Lighting of the Pilgrim Monument in Provincetown. You will also want to visit the Provincetown Museum to see the Pilgrim exhibit, complete with a diorama of the signing of the Mayflower Compact, the first governing document of the new Plymouth settlement. 30 | WeAreProsper.com
Even though some Cape Cod hotels close during the off-season, many stay open with reduced rates. Also, because vacancies are common during November, don’t be afraid to negotiate a lower rate or ask for a room with an ocean view. One of the best places that we found was the luxurious Wequassett Resort and Golf Club. Nestled in the elbow of Cape Cod, this meticulously landscaped luxury resort hideaway features lavish guest rooms and suites, five acclaimed restaurants, two extraordinary beaches and eighteen holes of golf. Stay in the 435 square foot Premiere Water View Cottage room, with a king size bed and queen sofa bed, sitting area, luxurious bath and a waterfront deck, complete with an outdoor fireplace.
