October Means Homecoming and Halloween October…all things Fall and Pumpkin! After the brutally hot summer we endured this year, and then Summer 2 in September, this cooler weather that we are finally in the midst of feels great! And with the cooler temperatures and shorter days comes all the colors and decorations of autumn! It’s truly a glorious time of year and a great time to kick off the impending holiday season…starting with Homecoming and Halloween this month! Each year as our children get older, these October traditions seem to grow and change according to their ages and interests. When the older girls were little, the annual Homecoming parade was easy…we’d put on our green, show up an hour or so before it was supposed to start, find a parking spot by the church and then go find a place to set up our chairs and wait for the candy to fly. But today is a different story…our student body is 14,000+ strong, and this is the last year that we celebrate HOCO as a one high school town! So, make sure you get there EARLY – last year, we saw many setting up their spots after they dropped their kiddos off at the carpool line for school! If this is your first Prosper Homecoming, be prepared to be amazed…our district does it better than anyone, and our students, coaches and staff make it the best display of school spirit. The entire Town really does show up! The next best part of October in Prosper is Halloween. Par for the course, our Halloween will look different this year than it has in the past. With one away at college, one in high school and one in Kindergarten, gone are the days that we can get them dressed up in coordinating costumes, snap some cute pics for social media and head out for trick or treating. Sadly, I think we’re down to just one little that wants to dress up…but if our middle girl decides to join in on the fun, we’re not about to discourage her! Trick or treating is a fun way for kids to hang on to their youth and knowing how fast these next few years of high school will go, we’re all for slowing it down! We hope that y’all enjoy the fun of October…the Homecoming Football game will be one to remember! We also encourage you to show up and support our Lady Eagles volleyball team, the Tennis team (who have now moved into post season play), the Swim & Dive team as they compete at our brand new Natatorium, the band as they continue with their Marching Competition season and our Cross Country runners! This is a year that we’ll always remember…our last as a one high school district. We are Prosper…We are ONE! With Prosper Pride,

HOW TO MAKE A CARVED PUMPKIN LAST LONGER It’s pumpkin season…and for those of you who absolutely love all things fall, a favorite tradition each October is the carving of the pumpkins! It’s always hard to hold off carving jack o’lanterns until right before Halloween and there are many different ways to keep your jack o’lanterns fresh and stop them from rotting. Here are a few tips and tricks to make a carved pumpkin last longer. Pumpkins start to rot and wilt for two reasons…dehydration and mold or bacteria. To keep a carved pumpkin from rotting and looking shriveled, you have to attack both of these culprits by cleaning and then sealing the exposed surface of the pumpkin. Here is the step by step method you need to keep your pumpkin looking fresh! • •

• • •

Carve pumpkin as desired. Submerge the pumpkin in a large bucket with water and 2/3 cup bleach. Allow it to soak for 2 hours at minimum, up to 24 hours to allow bleach solution to kill any microorganisms on the pumpkin’s surfaces. (Keep away from pets and children obviously.) Coat the cut layers and inside of the pumpkin with a thin layer of petroleum jelly. NOTE: THIS IS FLAMMABLE SO USE A BATTERY-OPERATED LIGHT NOT A CANDLE INSIDE OF YOUR JACK O’LANTERN!!! The petroleum jelly helps seal in the moisture and keep out the bacteria that can cause your pumpkin to dry out or rot. Spray the pumpkin daily with a spray bottle of water with a few drops of bleach to help keep it moist and clean. Store the pumpkin in a plastic bag in the fridge at night if possible or keep out of direct sunlight in a cool, dry place for best results. If it does start to wilt, try to revive it by submerging it in an ice bath for a few hours. This works best when you catch it early. Dry thoroughly to prevent mold.

Just to reiterate, DO NOT USE CANDLES inside the pumpkin if you are using the petroleum jelly. Honestly, it’s best to always use a flickering battery-operated light instead anyway. Real candles heat up and dry out the inside of the pumpkin, shortening its lifespan even further. Plus, it can be a fire hazard!

Federal SAFER Grant Accepted by Prosper Town Council Fire Department Benefits from Outside Funds

A grant was accepted at the September 24th Prosper Town Council meeting designed to enhance public safety by covering a significant portion of the initial cost of additional staffing at the Fire Department. The Fire Department grant, awarded by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), is part of the SAFER (Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response) program and will partially fund the addition of six firefighter/paramedics for three years. The grant will cover 75% of the salaries for the first two years, and 35% in the final third year. At $919,257.60, the grant is among the largest SAFER grants awarded to the Town. Fire Chief Stuart Blasingame says the grant will assist Prosper in ramping up hiring in anticipation of the delivery of the Town’s ladder truck. “Our responsibilities as a Fire Department grow at the same pace as the Town grows,” he said. “Providing the highest level of fire protection to the residents, homeowners, and businesses of Prosper is our primary concern, and counting on the proper staffing with qualified personnel is critical to our function.” Anticipating the imminent arrival of the Town’s ladder truck, the department will require the additional staffing to ensure the proper operation of that piece of firefighting equipment. While the Town has taken advantage of a ladder truck on loan from the manufacturer, the department’s own ladder truck is expected to arrive within the next few months. Federal and state grants for public safety are an important part of the available array of financial support that municipalities can apply for on an annual basis.

An Easy, Stylish Decorating Upgrade A wall-mount door makes more room for fun Fall is the perfect time to make space-saving upgrades to your house. For example, consider swapping out a traditional swinging door for a smooth-gliding, wall-mounted sliding door. A sliding door can add up to 14 square feet of floor space, which allows for more room to spread out toys and games, and give a more spacious feel to nearly any room. They also allow for more flexibility in furniture arrangements, which can turn even the smallest nook in your house into a cozy space. It’s easy to do with an option like Johnson Hardware’s Soft-Close WallMount Sliding Door Hardware, which can be used with virtually any metal or wood door from 1-inch to 1 3/4-inches thick, up to 48 inches wide and weighing up to 200 pounds. The U.S.-made hardware gently slows the door’s travel speed to softly pull it into the fully open or fully closed position and works like a cabinet door closer, enabling doors to open and close quietly and securely. It also prevents door slamming and pinched fingers, as well as reducing door operational noise. The built-in satin or bronze finish fascia can give a warm decorative detail to a room while the smooth-rolling door hardware and track exceed ANSI standards, meaning it can successfully complete 100,000 opening and closing cycles, with adjustable door guides, tricycle hangers and adjustable track stops. The jump-proof aluminum box track is available in lengths up to 96 inches for single doors and up to 192 inches for double doors. 14 | October 2019 WeAreProsper.com

Installing wall-mount sliding door hardware in a playroom, or nearly any other room in your house, can be an easy yet high-impact improvement that reduces space constraints while adding warmth, functionality and visual appeal. For more information, visit johnsonhardware.com.

5 Tips for Tackling Leftover Halloween Treats Going door to door for candy and treats is part of many families’ Halloween traditions, and the routine almost always ends with a kitchen loaded with treats. When the spooky season comes to a close, consider these ways to use up those delectable goodies. Take Some to Work A tried and true classic. It’s likely you won’t be the only person in your office bringing in leftovers a few days after Halloween, but there’s a good chance you have coworkers without kids who may not be as tired of treats as parents. Freeze It Certain candies like chocolates freeze better than others, so be conscious of what you’re putting in the freezer. This method keeps your sweets better longer and allows you to use them as ingredients in baking desserts throughout the year, or you can simply thaw a few at a time for snacking. Make Trail Mix The traditional recipe calls for peanuts, raisins and small chocolate pieces, but you can take matters into your own hands with a creative hodgepodge of just about anything you’re left with after Halloween passes. Candy corn, pretzels, chocolates and other sweets are perfect for mixing up as a snack to put in baggies for work or school – just choose your family’s favorites and toss together.

18 | October 2019 WeAreProsper.com

Set It Out for Guests Leftover goodies don’t have to be hidden in the pantry. Grab a small glass dish, fill it with wrapped fun-size candies and place it on an end table, kitchen island or anywhere guests often gather and would feel invited to take one. Create a Sweet Pairing Although it’s (probably) your kids’ hard work that led to an abundance of candies, you can enjoy the fruits of their labor. For adults who enjoy a sweet chocolate treat (even if it isn’t fancy) with a glass of red wine or spiked hot chocolate, there are few better ways to wind down after Halloween than with a boozy pairing. Visit Culinary.net for more Halloween treats and recipe ideas.

Wearable Fall Trends The fall season is all about remixing modern classics, which means some fall trends may already be hanging in your closet. However, if you decide to upgrade a few basics, you can find plenty of worthy investment pieces this season that you can wear again and again for years to come Be Romantic Shift your favorite summer florals forward with a cozy knit cardigan and military-esque boots. A zip-up sweatshirt, sneakers and a choker can add a little grunge to a midi or maxi skirt. “I love the unexpected touch of punk paired with softer pretty pieces,” said Bobbie Thomas, NBC’s “Today” style editor and author of “The Power of Style: Everything You Need to Know Before You Get Dressed Tomorrow.” Your 9-5 tops can also work for evenings and weekends – a soft tie-neck blouse can elevate a pair of faux leather leggings; just add a blazer and some heavy metal with chains. Or add a touch of lace with a camisole under a v-neck sweater.” Do Denim Jeans – along with jean jackets, dresses, skirts, jumpers and more – are en vogue. In fact, denim from head to toe is definitely a do and serves up an effortless cool factor, Thomas said. Advanced textiles offer new washes and game-changing fit options. “When it comes to your basic blues, style and science are blending seamlessly to better fit our figures today,” she said. “The optic technology in Lee’s Shape Illusions collection exemplifies a 360-degree design approach that lifts, lengthens and flatters from every angle. My favorite part is that they’ve applied this to both tops and bottoms with strategic seaming, side panels and enhanced pockets for under $30 – and it’s size inclusive.”

Go Green A treasure trove of jewel tones is in store this season. However, Mother Nature inspires a fresh, standout shade of green – from pistachio to emerald to forest – for a way to layer in color this season. If you’re looking for just a dash, a chic pair of earrings or a bold manicure is an easy way to go green. “Its organic essence allows green to mix well with any hue,” Thomas said. “A kelly green handbag pops against a classic black and white ensemble while hunter green is a sophisticated compliment to pale pink. Mint looks delicious when mixed with rich browns and chartreuse is the perfect jolt to navy.” Borrow from the Boys While suiting is on the scene, oversize blazers are really back, Thomas said. Though models in editorials often sport them draped over the shoulder, she suggests a more practical way to wear the look. “Keep your look sleek underneath to avoid losing your silhouette and consider making it your own with the definition of a belt or cross-body bag,” Thomas said. From laid back lumberjack to traditional tartan, fall is also the perfect time to be mad for plaid. The pattern is dominant in stores this year with nearly every colorway imaginable and options like coats and carry-alls. Boot Up Kick your look up a notch this fall with a boot. From pointy to square toe styles, chunky combat lace ups to western ankle booties and everything in-between, there really is something for almost everyone. “I’m not sure there is a boot that’s not in style this season,” Thomas said. Find more inspiration to make a fall fashion statement at www.Lee.com.

f you are raising picky eaters, there’s a cooking technique that makes some of kids’ favorite foods – like burgers and nachos – more nutritious while still tasting delicious. Mushrooms, with their inherent umami flavor, are a perfect addition to blend into meals to increase both flavor and nutrition. Chefs kicked off the trend by blending finely chopped mushrooms with meat for burgers that are flavorful, healthy and Earth-friendly, and now blended burgers are showing up in school cafeterias, supermarket meat counters and fast food drive-thrus. “Blended entrees like burgers are a win-winwin for families wanting to eat better,” said Dayle Hayes, registered dietitian and founder of School Meals That Rock. “Mushrooms add

delicious umami flavor, reduce fat and sodium in many popular dishes and kids love them.” Another fan of blending is MasterChef Junior finalist and teen chef, Evan Robinson. Robinson likes to blend with multiple varieties of mushrooms in family favorites such as tacos, burgers and stuffed peppers. “I find that blending mushrooms into some of my go-to recipes helps increase the flavor while reducing the amount of fat and sodium,” Robinson said. If you’re ready to start blending at home, it can be a simple process for introducing foods to even the pickiest of eaters. Recruit kids as kitchen helpers to tackle tasks such as wiping mushrooms clean and using their hands to blend the meat and mushrooms together. For more family-friendly, blended recipes, visit Blenditarian.com.

tortilla chips salsa (optional) guacamole (optional) kale (optional) romaine lettuce (optional) tomatoes (optional) cilantro (optional) diced red bell peppers (optional) In blender or food processor, pulse mushrooms, garlic and onions. In large saute pan over medium-high heat, mix finely chopped mushroom mixture with seasoning and cook 2 minutes. Add ground turkey, breaking into fine crumbles until completely cooked through. Set aside. To make cheese sauce: In medium saucepan over medium-high heat, melt butter then add flour and whisk constantly, breaking up lumps. Stir 2 minutes then add milk and continuously whisk. Stir in cheese and mix with wooden spoon. Assemble chips on serving platter; spread mushroommeat crumble on top. Add cheese sauce and toppings like salsa, guacamole, kale, romaine lettuce, tomatoes, cilantro and diced red bell peppers, if desired.

Pizza Burgers

Recipe courtesy of Chef Evan Robinson Servings: 4 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil 1 medium portabella mushroom, finely chopped 2-3 white button mushrooms, finely chopped 1/2 small onion 1/2 clove garlic 2 teaspoons Italian-style herb seasoning 8 ounces ground beef

salt, to taste pizza or marinara sauce shredded mozzarella cheese hamburger buns In large pan over medium-high heat, saute extra-virgin olive oil, mushrooms, onions, garlic and herb seasoning approximately 5 minutes until vegetables are soft. Set aside and let cool to room temperature. Blend mushroom mixture with ground beef. Season with salt, to taste. Form into four patties and cook in same pan as mushroom mixture to preferred doneness. Top with dollop pizza sauce and mozzarella cheese. Cover pan to melt cheese then carefully transfer to buns.

A Cooking Technique You Need to Know: BLENDING Blending involves mixing finely chopped mushrooms with ground meat for more nutritious, but still delicious, burgers, tacos, meatballs and more. 1. Chop your favorite mushroom variety to match the consistency of the ground meat. This can be done with a knife or food processor. 2. Blend the chopped mushrooms with the ground meat. 3. Cook with Mexican seasoning mix for tacos, marinara sauce for meaty ragu or salt and pepper for juicy, flavorful burgers.

Growing Prosper

Do Your Trees Look Happy?

Helpful Tree Care Tips for this Fall The gardening season isn’t over once fall arrives, especially when it comes to your trees. Fall is an excellent time for planting most trees. It’s also important to do your fall tree care now to prepare them for winter. Planting Most trees can be planted in fall. The temperatures are cooler, stressing the trees less and allowing them a better chance to get their roots established. It also helps that by this time in the growing season, some places discount their plant stock. Special Care for Young Trees Young trees are especially susceptible to the temperature changes that come with winter in cold climates. They are usually not developed enough to withstand the constant freezing and thawing that may occur throughout the upcoming winter. One way to help combat this is with a thick (3-6”) mulch layer. Do not put it right up against the trunk - this can cause moisture buildup that attracts fungus. Better to build up a circular berm around the outside canopy at the base of the tree. Shredded cedar would be best to use. Watering There’s a chill creeping into the air. The leaves are changing colors. Winter is just around the corner. Now is the time to think about properly watering your trees in autumn to help ensure against damage in the winter. In the middle of winter, the ground is frozen. Trees are not able to access water, so it is important that you are watering your trees in autumn as necessary. Watering your trees in early autumn is different than late autumn, so water accordingly. 28 | October 2019 WeAreProsper.com

Early Autumn In early autumn, you should stop watering your deciduous and evergreen trees. Do not worry about watering until the leaves have fallen from the deciduous trees. The trees are still growing in early autumn and watering will encourage new growth. If a frost comes when there is new growth on the tree, it will be damaged. Late Autumn Once the deciduous trees have lost their leaves in late autumn, it is time to start watering again. Evergreen trees will definitely need to be watered before winter - since they never lose their foliage and go into full dormancy, they will constantly be losing water throughout the winter. By late autumn, the tops of the trees have gone dormant, so they will not produce new growth. The tree is busy moving nutrients around in preparation for dormancy. Water deeply (at least 1-2 feet deep at a time) until the ground is frozen. Deep watering encourages proper root growth so that the trees will be able to access water farther down in the soil. Young trees, especially, need lots of water to establish roots in preparation for winter. Newly planted trees should be watered at the base, while more mature trees should be watered at the drip line. The drip line is the area directly located under the outer circumference of the tree branches. This is where the tiny rootlets are located that take up water for the tree. Trees should be watered here, not by the base of the trunk, or the tree may develop root rot. Fertilizing Watch for signs that your trees need fertilization. Some signs that may

indicate a nutrient problem are: Reduced growth in branches and leaves. Yellow or pale green leaves (in those trees that do not turn yellow in fall). Leaves changing colors and falling earlier than usual. Wilting Fertilizing in fall can cause rapid new growth, which could be damaged in winter. Consider fertilizing in spring if possible. Pruning: Make sure to remove the 3 D’s dead, diseased or damaged. They all serve as points where diseases or pests could enter. Removing them will also make the tree look better. You can also prune branches that aren’t growing the way you would like. Do thin rather than shear on flowering trees - prune lightly because next year’s flower buds have already been formed, and heavy pruning would affect the next spring’s flower production. Dormant Spray: A dormant spray may be a good idea for deciduous trees, ornamentals, fruit trees and shrubs. But remember not to spray until after you prune. Obviously, you will lose much of your effort and expense if you cut off treated limbs. Choice of chemicals is important. Dormant sprays include lime, copper and sulfur combinations to kill overwintering microorganisms. Dormant oil controls insects and their eggs. You just may need several types of sprays and oils to be effective. Avoid spraying any of this material in the hot sun as it can damage dormant buds. Get specific chemical recommendations from you local county extension agent. Question: Jimmie, how long into the fall season should I continue to mow the lawn? Thanks for your time; I always enjoy learning from your articles!! Paul in Prosper Answer: Hi Paul, thanks for the kind words. Those of us who despise mowing can’t wait to retire the mower for another year. But don’t be too hasty. Nor should you think that, just because you stopped mowing last year on such-andsuch a date, the same end-date will be valid this year. This question’s a lot easier to answer than you might imagine. Simply continue to mow the lawn until the grass stops growing! Weather will determine this, not some artificial calendar deadline. Until next time...Happy Gardening!!

A Creative Twist on Halloween Carvings stem end to create opening for bowl to be added. Using dry-erase marker, draw eyes, nose and mouth, along with wavy slits around carving. Use paring knife to cut them out, being sure to cut through to red flesh to let more light flow through. Use melon baller to hollow out inside of watermelon. Reserve watermelon balls. Use scoop to remove remaining watermelon. Using vegetable peeler, remove green skin off outside of watermelon, similar to peeling cucumber. Wrap thin strips cheesecloth or gauze around mummy carving and secure with straight pin, if needed. Place battery-operated candle or light inside carving and fit small bowl into top of carving. Trim away excess rind to make bowl fit securely.

When it comes to Halloween, carving the same pumpkin designs each year can become routine. This year, save a pumpkin and carve your spooky masterpiece into a watermelon instead. Nutrient-rich watermelon can be a healthy alternative to other sweet treats full of added sugar during Halloween festivities as it’s a source of vitamins A and C as well as the antioxidant lycopene and the amino acid citrulline. Because they are made up of 92% water, watermelons can be an effective way to stay hydrated during trick-or-treating, and creations like a Mummy or Jack O’Melon can help satisfy sweet cravings while keeping friends and family members frightfully delighted. To get started, consider these carving tips and tricks: To make cutting and slicing easier, the watermelon should be at room temperate when carving. Cut a small, thin, flat piece from the bottom of the watermelon to provide a stable base for carving. Draw the design on the watermelon rind with a dry-erase marker before cutting. If you make a mistake, this can make it easier to wipe off. Use a sharp knife with a pointed tip for easier, cleaner cuts. Consider a paring knife with a smaller tip for ease of detail. Blend scraps of watermelon that are too messy for dicing or slicing to create an easy juice. Mummy Supplies and Tools: Watermelon Cutting board Kitchen knife Dry-erase marker Paring knife Melon baller Scoop Vegetable peeler Cheesecloth or gauze Straight pin (optional) Battery-operated candle or light Small bowl Blueberries or bloody candy eyes Toothpicks, pins or glue Wash watermelon under cool running water and pat dry. On cutting board, place watermelon on its side and use kitchen knife to cut off 1/4-1/2-inch of rind from bottom to provide sturdy base, being careful not to cut too deep into white part of rind. Fill bowl with melon balls. Attach candy eyes or blueberries using a toothpicks, pins or glue. Jack O’Melon Supplies and Tools: Knife Round watermelon Melon baller Dry-erase marker Toothpicks (optional) Battery-operated light Using knife, cut thin slice from bottom of watermelon to provide stable base. Cut circular piece of rind from top of watermelon big enough to reach into and remove flesh. Carefully remove top section and reserve for use as “lid.” Remove flesh from inside watermelon using melon baller, reserving melon balls for snacking. Hollow out remaining watermelon flesh and use blender to juice scraps and excess juice. Using dry-erase marker, draw outlines of eyes, nose, mouth, hair, ears and other features on side of watermelon. If mistake is made with marker, wipe off using paper towel to start over. Following outlines, carve features into watermelon and remove excess rind. Safe, battery-operated light can be firmly placed inside watermelon to provide haunting glow. Place circular piece of rind back on top of watermelon.
