Town Matters Who doesn’t like a picnic? There’s not really much to dislike about one. The fresh air of late summer, the sounds of kids playing and adults laughing, the fragrant aroma of hot dogs on the grill, the cool sensation of drinking a glass of refreshing water, and the warm sense of community when among friends and neighbors are all part of why picnics are such fun. Our Town’s Annual Community Picnic is set for Saturday, September 8 at Frontier Park from 4:00pm to 7:00pm. It’s free and open to all residents and family members. Our good friends at Lighthouse Christian Fellowship Church will provide and grill the hot dogs, refreshments will be provided by our good friends at Prosper United Methodist Church, and the Prosper Ladies Association will serve desserts. Members of the Parks and Recreation Board will also be there handing out cookies. As usual, I will be among those serving the delectable hot dogs along with my colleagues on the Town Council and the Town Manager. We’ll don our official aprons and make sure that everyone gets a tremendous meal. There will be rides and activities for the enjoyment and pleasure of kids and grownups as well, but, of course, the real purpose of our annual get-together goes much deeper than a free meal and play time. Our community picnic is designed to bring us together as a community to share our common goals, to become aware of and embrace each other’s life journey, and to deepen or develop our friendships and mutual bonds. Our picnic, as many of you may already know, grew out of the old practice of families and friends in Prosper coming together at the beginning of the harvest season and helping bring in the crop. During the harvesting of the vegetables and fruits, grains and other produce, families would bring baskets of food for the workers and there would be lots of chatting, laughing and catching up. It’s getting harder and harder to imagine Prosper as a primarily agricultural community, where the main activity was the growing, harvesting and marketing of crops, but it most certainly was. In fact, the very name of our Town results from a particularly good yield. Residents were so impressed with the harvest one year that they named the community Prosper, to signify a prosperous production in the fields. Those days, of course, are forever behind us, but the concept of getting together is still very much alive and serving many of the same purposes, except bringing in the crops, of course. During our picnic, we will also be gathering canned goods for our food pantry, Bethlehem Place. Please don’t forget to bring a few cans and other non-perishables and help one of the Prosper ISD schools win the Hunger is No Picnic trophy for their school. And, we have once again asked local nonprofits to set up exhibits and booths to share their stories and perhaps recruit volunteers. Lena and I always look forward to the Community Picnic, and I hope you and your family enjoy the day with us. 10 | September 2018 PROSPER Magazine

PROSPER Magazine’s Business of the Month September FUSE - DYNAMIC WORKSPACE Mike & Tamara Daugherty have lived in the Celina/Prosper area for the past six years and have two children: Logan & Harrison who attend Prestonwood Christian Academy - Prosper and Cockrell Elementary. Mike & Tamara have been active members at their church and school where Mike serves on the Board of Trustees and Tamara has served as the President of the Parent Teacher Fellowship. Mike is a native of Oklahoma and got his undergraduate degree from Oklahoma State University and received his MBA from the University of Texas at Dallas. Tamara is from Richmond, Virginia and received her undergraduate degree from Virginia Commonwealth University. Over the past 16 years, Mike & Tamara have been in the hospitality business developing and operating hotels in Arkansas and Texas with Hilton and Marriott franchises. Prior to entering the hospitality business, Mike spent 10 years in the telecommunications business working with two wireless start-ups which eventually went public and after that Mike started working for SBC Communications, now AT&T. Tamara’s background was in advertising, working as an Account Director for Rapp Collins, a division of Omnicom Group, the world’s second largest advertising agency. “When we met we were both very driven professionals but we both were required to travel a lot with our jobs and we wanted to “Do More” with our lives and build a business together. We had an opportunity to open a couple of Hampton franchises and we jumped at the opportunity to work together and focus on our family, not necessarily our careers.” FUSE Dynamic Workspace is a flexible workspace community that provides coworking space, dedicated desks, private offices and meeting space all wrapped in hospitality. At FUSE, members can work the way THEY want to work and that might include sitting OR standing at their adjustable sit/stand desk in their private office or over Honeylu’s coffee with a colleague in one of the co-work booths or meeting in one of the different meeting spaces. They saw a unique opportunity to bring their hospitality experience and model to entrepreneurs and businesses, helping them to do more and be more successful. A lot of small business professionals work on their own without the help of an administrative staff and FUSE provides that layer of support and hospitality for its members. “Just as if our members were visiting one of our hotels, our mission is to serve our members needs and help them be more successful. Our members can use their mobile device to reserve meeting space and contact our Member Services host to arrange catering or help welcome their guest. We have four different meeting room configurations that can accommodate between 8 and 50 people and we provide the latest technology and interactive screens and presentation boards.”

The mantra at FUSE is DO MORE. By that, they believe that their members want more out of life and because of that, they are not selling space…they are building Community. In the FUSE community, the Do More mantra manifests itself in helping members of course do more and be more successful by aiding them in their business but equally important, they wanted to help members Do More by connecting with their community. “When Tamara and I moved to Prosper we noticed that most people were connected through their kids and their churches and we sought to also create a community that allowed a place for people to connect through work. To that end we are looking to partner with local organizations like Grace Bridge and allow our members the opportunity to serve their Community.” By developing a community at FUSE, the mission is to help other entrepreneurs, and businesses be more successful. Whether that is helping them through offerings of “lunch-and-learn” gatherings to get more out of their business or providing a community of like-minded professionals, they want to be a place where successful people go to be even more successful and where they can connect with others who are striving to get the most out of their business and life. Our vision for FUSE is simple. If we’re passionate about our members, their passion will resonate and help create and strengthen the FUSE Brand. The FUSE mission is to grow the FUSE community inside and outside the walls of FUSE, and to provide and source opportunities to give back to our local community through various philanthropic opportunities. They currently have approximately 83 members at FUSE and are looking to partner with local organizations. Currently they are involved with Grace Bridge and Bridge Builders as well as two new churches launching in the Prosper /Celina area including The Trails and Radiant Life Church and are working through some details of how we might be involved with Kids Prosper Kids organization. “We are passionate about providing great service and hospitality!”

Growing PROSPER Ever Wish that Tree or Shrub was Over There? Transplanting Tips Transplanting young trees and shrubs that you have just purchased from a nursery appears an easy task…deceptively so! Many new plants die because they’re not planted properly. Likewise, if you’re about to give a facelift to a landscape design that has been neglected for years, then you will need to move existing plant matter, whether for relocation or for disposal. If you opt for transplanting the trees and shrubs, you must take steps to improve the likelihood of survival. Now that fall is fast approaching, your transplanting window is about to open! Here’s How: •

Location, location, location! First determine whether the tree or shrub likes sun or shade, and what its spacing and watering requirements are. For instance, don’t locate a plant that craves water next to one that prefers dry conditions…their needs will be incompatible.

Dig the new hole before you dig up the tree or shrub. Once you dig up the plant, the longer its roots go without a home, the lower your chances for a successful transplanting.

Measure the width and depth of the rootball. The width of the new hole should be two to three times that of the rootball. The depth should be kept the same as that of the rootball. If anything, make it a bit shallower, to avoid puddling and consequent rotting.

When you reach the bottom of the hole, resist the temptation to break up the soil beneath. You would think that this would help the tree or shrub, allowing its roots to penetrate deeper. Instead, it could cause the tree or shrub to sink, inviting rot.

Begin digging out the tree or shrub selected for transplanting. But don’t start digging right at the base of a mature tree or shrub. Rather, start digging about 3’ out from the base, all along the perimeter. Get a feel for where the main mass of roots lies. Also begin to judge what the weight will be of plant, roots and soil clinging to roots. You may need someone to help lift it!

The idea is to keep as much of the rootball intact as possible. But the larger the plant is, the chances of getting anything close to the entire rootball will diminish -- and you wouldn’t be able to carry it anyhow! Usually you will have to cut through some roots on a mature plant.

Once you’ve removed enough soil from around the sides of the plant, you’ll eventually be able to slip your shovel under it and begin to loosen the plant’s grip on the soil below it. After it’s loose, spread a tarp on the ground nearby and gently move the tree or shrub onto the tarp.

Using the tarp as a transporting medium, drag the tree or shrub over to the new hole. Gently slide it into the hole and get it straight. Shovel the excavated soil back into the hole. Tamp this soil down firmly and water it as you go, to eliminate air pockets. The formation of air pockets would cause the tree or shrub to sink, inviting puddling and consequent rot. Mound up the soil in a ring around the newly transplanted tree or shrub, forming a berm that will catch water like a basin. This will help you achieve your main objective from here on out -keeping the new transplant’s roots well watered, until it becomes

14 | September 2018 PROSPER Magazine

established. •

Spread a 3” layer of mulch around the new transplant. But keep it a few inches away from the base of the tree or shrub, to promote air circulation and so as not to invite rodents from nibbling on the trunk.

Then water, water, water. The first summer would be a difficult one for the tree or shrub to weather, unless it gets plenty of water.

When should you conduct your transplanting? For most trees and shrubs, late winter or early spring are the best times for transplanting, with fall being the second-best time. Most transplanting projects take about 2 hours. However, that depends greatly on the circumstances. To dig a mature tree or shrub out of rocky soil is back-breaking work. How long it takes you will largely depend on your health and on how much you’re willing to push yourself. Question: Jimmie, I am considering installing a natural rock garden and would like to know your opinion on what is the best type of rock to use for this? Thank you for your reply. Craig A. in Prosper

Answer: Hi Craig, we’ll assume you’re bringing rock in from outside your property and constructing a rock garden from scratch. Porous, softer rock is better for rock gardens than is harder rock. Harder rocks take longer to acquire the weathered look that you are striving for in the rock garden, because they are less receptive to the growth of mosses and lichens. Promoting the weathering of your rocks will give the rock garden a natural look…as if the rocks had always been there. Also, stick to rocks that look the same in texture, color and form. If you use rocks of similar appearance throughout your rock garden, it will have a much more natural look. Until next time…Happy Gardening!! -Jimmie Send your landscaping and gardening questions to Jimmie Gibson Jr. at http://www.absolutelybushedlandscaping. com or jimmie@absolutelybushed.com Jimmie is a Prosper resident and the owner of Absolutely Bushed Landscaping Company, an award winning, family and veteran owned and operated business created in 1980 to provide the highest quality custom Outdoor Renovation available to homeowners in the Dallas Ft. How Great Things Happen By Jodie Brownd

Brandon Schmidt: Athletic Director and Prosper Head Football Coach

Brandon graduated from La Marque High School in 1995, where as a coach’s kid, he made a name for himself on the football field a couple of times with Class 4A state final appearances. He then went on to be a three-year letterman on the football team at Sam Houston State University, graduating in 2001 with a bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology and History. He also obtained his master’s in educational administration from Lamar University. Before landing in Prosper, Coach Schmidt spent nine years at Cedar Park High School, two at Stony Point High School in Round Rock, and three at LaPorte High School. He and his wife Katie make their home here in Prosper with their 3 children: Sophie(10), Sabrina(8) and Carter(2.5). He grew up a coach’s kid and spent most of his time in the Houston and Austin areas. He says there is nothing else in the world he could ever see himself doing as he comes from a proud family of coaches…it’s in his blood. He smiles when he remembers Friday nights growing up. The entire lifestyle of being raised with a father who was a coach is a unique experience. He recalls late nights on buses and standing with coaches and friends on the sidelines of football games. And of course, the comradery which is probably where he realized the truth in one of his favorite sayings, “When you attach yourself to great people, great things happen.” An influential person and role model in Coach Schmidt’s life is his friend and mentor, Chris Ross. Regarding coaching, Ross set a great example in terms of working saying that, “The work has to get done, no matter who does it.” And Coach Schmidt remembers all too well the late Sunday nights watching tape for hours upon end until the job was done. Coach Ross taught him that “The work of a coach isn’t about us, it’s about the kids and making the experiences the best they can for them.” Coach Schmidt talks about the influences in his life but is also proud to have the opportunity to make a difference in the athletes’ lives he coaches. He recalls one student whose freshman year was less than stellar academically, as he failed every class. When asked why he failed, the kid said, “Because I hate school.” Coach Schmidt then asked him if he liked money, to which the student said, “YES!” “Then I suggest you start to like school,” he said with a laugh. That same student who said he hated school is

18 | September 2018 PROSPER Magazine

now in the process of obtaining his master’s degree, which is a far cry from where he once was. It serves as proof that when kids have a little guidance the sky is the limit if they believe they can do it. Sometimes coaches are the only one to tell a kid they can. Schmidt says that he can’t just choose the one best thing about Prosper but started with the parents, faculty and students alike here, having a great work ethic. The community support is second to none as the entire town rallies around its kids no matter what activity they’re in. He is happy and proud to be a part of an administration that supports athletics the way they do. He credits the faculty for the stellar reputation Prosper ISD has, both academically and athletically. With the main goal of raising well rounded students in Prosper, it’s known as being a very kid friendly school. “Prosper parents love their kids and we do too” says Coach Schmidt. “Which is exactly the way it’s supposed to be.”

John Alstrin: Director of Bands at Prosper High School By Jodie Brownd

Mr. Alstrin makes his home here in Prosper with his wife Christina and their 3 children: Collin(10), Addison(7) and Harper(3). He moved here after serving at L.D. Bell High School in Hurst, Texas for 5 years, The University of Houston for 3 years and Lake Highlands for 6 years. As the Director of Bands at PHS, he conducts the Wind Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble and team-teaches the Mighty Eagle Marching Band, Woodwind, Brass, Percussion and Color Guard Classes. Mr. Alstrin also travels to assist and teach-team beginner and band classes at Rogers and Reynolds Middle School. He thoroughly enjoys doing his life’s work in a town he loves, with a community that has established its heartbeat through a supportive school district, because of dedicated parents. He always had a passion for music and was inspired by his grandparents…a grandmother who trained at the American Conservatory and a grandfather who was a child psychologist. Alstrin was an impressive mathematician in school, and it wasn’t until his later years that he chose the field of music as his life’s practice. He realized that he would be most effective as a teacher and band director.

Band is a combination of the mathematics of music reading, mastering your instrument while displaying physical ability, self-control and coordination. It is an institution that historically works, one that is proven so, as it is military based. Figuratively, band is an instrument and a tool that the state of Texas has implemented and perfected that offers a creative and artistic outlet that combines much needed structure and life lessons that create well rounded individuals that value the importance of comradery and group effort. Literally, Band creates bonds. It gives like-minded students a place to belong, a place where they fit in and are welcome. Mr. Alstrin speaks of the closeness that is established with those bonds between students. He also says, “Saying goodbye to Seniors at graduation is difficult because they’ve invested in you and you have invested in them, most of the time for up to 7 years. The pleasure is that we get to watch them grow up.” Mr. Alstrin believes that co-curricular activities become the glue that holds a school and community together. He shares the philosophy of UCLA Basketball Coach John Wooden, never speaking to his team about winning or losing, he speaks on the importance of players doing their very best. In life, Band, or anything that we find important, the measurement is against ourselves. One of his proudest moments was last year when he was recognized by Prosper Alumi and academic Super Stars; Emily Ray, Sydney Nutter and Taylor Hass as their most influential teacher. He would like to recognize his team: Bradley Huneycutt- Associate Director of Bands Michael Huestis- Director of Percussion Spencer Smith- Assistant Band Director Lindsay Kusmierczak – Color Guard Director

His excitement about traditional fine arts, regardless of what medium, creates an electricity in the air that pulls you in. Whether the topic is band, choir, orchestra, painting or theater, he is an advocate for the payoffs and rewards of self-expression. He speaks of the very powerful and multi-faceted synergy that goes into a band production. Although each member is an individual, the 350 musicians come together for what is known as one body working in perfect time to create a production. That production evolves week after week, by process of tweaking, perfecting and rebuilding. The team aspect is like a football play that goes well, or a strategy that is perfectly timed.

Increasing School Spirit Lyndsey Hamlin: Prosper High School Cheerleading Coach This is Coach Hamlin’s second year coaching cheer, and her first as Varsity head coach. Last year she served as the Junior Varsity coach, and still maintains her role as the Yearbook Advisor for PHS. She is in her ninth year at Prosper ISD. When she first started at Prosper, she taught English, Photojournalism, Journalism, Newspaper and Yearbook. Over the course of the years and with all of the growth the district has experienced, she now gets to focus on two of her favorites…Photojournalism and Yearbook. Coach Hamlin loves Prosper High School because it is a great place to work. “That sounds corny,” she says, “but it truly is.” Every morning she walks down the hall to her classroom happy because she loves her job. “I work with some pretty amazing people and the students are incredible. I love yearbook because my staff works hard every single day to put out a yearbook they are proud of and hope that the students at PHS love.” She says she loves cheer because every day she and her team, approximately 50 girls and one boy, work together to come up with new ideas to increase the spirit of their school. They work hard to perfect their performances for all school activities. “The dedication these students have is why I teach and why I coach. They are the reason I love walking to my classroom each morning. There is absolutely nothing else I would rather do… and it’s because I work at Prosper High School.”

Jumping to New Heights By Jodie Brownd

Prosper High School Sophomore Faith Bowers is a power tumbler who is 15 years old. She started doing gymnastics at the early age of 5, when she and her sister Hope started participating in youth cheerleading. They were both quickly drawn to the gymnastics aspect of the sport and showed much talent early on, deciding that gymnastics is where their passion was. The girls began taking tumbling classes at Eagles Wings Athletics in Prosper when they were 8 years old. The owner and coach, Bret Stout, then invited both girls to join his Tumbling and Trampoline competitive team. They began competing in all three disciplines of the USAG sport of Tumbling and Trampoline which includes power tumbling, trampoline, and double mini trampoline. Although Faith started competing in all three disciplines, it didn’t take long to determine that she was a powerhouse to be reckoned with on the tumbling rod floor. As Faith continued to improve, she eventually moved to the Eagle’s Wings Athletics location in Allen. In Allen, she was coached by former World’s competitive power tumbler and now coach, Jared Olsen. When the Allen location closed, Faith and others on the team moved with Coach Olsen to Eagle Gymnastics in Frisco, Texas where she joined the Eagle Gymnastics team. Tumbling and Trampoline is a highly competitive sport. Faith says she practices 16 hours per week, and if you’ve ever seen her skills, you know that to be true. The goal for these young athletes is to compete in a number of competitions each year leading up to State, Regionals, and then the U.S. Gymnastics Championships if the athlete hits a certain qualifying score. Faith had a very successful season this year as she became a Level 10 Power Tumbling National Champion, hitting the qualifying score to advance to Junior Elite in power tumbling. As a result, Faith has the opportunity in the upcoming season to qualify to compete internationally

at the World Age Group Competition. To the average person, this sounds like it would be the equivalent to the Olympics, and indeed it is. She also has a goal of being chosen for the Junior U.S. National Team. Unfortunately, the entertaining and adrenaline filled sport of power tumbling isn’t yet a competitive sport offered at the Olympics which makes any real gymnastics lover, athlete or spectator, scratch their head. Faith would like to get the word out and educate people about the sport that has provided her with so many opportunities to compete and make many friends. She says that she would like for the sport to grow and grow and take the gymnastics world by storm, which is exactly what this petite and dainty young woman comes across as on the floor. She’s a storm of muscle and precision mixed with grace and flawless power and strength. As with any sport, injury is always a possibility. Faith’s sister, Hope, fractured both sides of her L5 vertebra causing her to retire recently. Although Hope greatly misses the sport, she still looks forward to cheering on her sister, as well as all her former teammates and friends. Faith has had her share of pains too, but she didn’t let a stress fracture to her right fibula hold her back. She competed and ultimately won her State and Regional competitions despite her injury this year. Faith says that she is proud to represent her country and believes that she would not be the tumbler that she is today without her coach, Jared Olsen. “Coach Jared wants all his athletes to wear U.S.A on their back just like he did.” She says her role model is her Mom, who inspires her and raised her to be the talented young woman that she is today. Another Prosper resident is making a name for himself in the world of gymnastics. Prosper High School Junior Weston Sitz is a Junior Elite Trampolinist and will be traveling to Russia to compete in the World Junior Elite Age Group Competition in November. Weston says that he is excited about the trip, as he has never travelled out of the country and is thrilled to get to meet other gymnasts from around the globe. Weston credits his coach Drew Collins of Eagle’s Gymnastics Academy for his success, and he is excited to represent the U.S.A. in such an exciting and elite competition. Weston started out in Artistic Gymnastics but switched to his current category of choice Trampoline. Weston will compete his routine of 10 skills that all get progressively more difficult. One skill is called a Miller, which is a double back flip with 3 twists. He’s got his passport ready and we will hear more about his successes at the World Competition. Prosper and the surrounding areas have an abundance of opportunities including school sports and extracurricular leagues of all types. Many people do not know about the opportunities in this area in terms of gymnastics. And, unlike that of typical artistic gymnastics, tumble and trampoline provides an opportunity for people of all ages and sizes to participate in a gymnastic sport. There are many dynamic students in Prosper doing exciting things in our state, nation and beyond that deserve recognition for representing our area with their talents. Keep your ears and eyes open for news about Faith and Weston, because we know that it’s just a matter of time before they put Prosper, Texas and the U.S.A. on the map for gymnastics. HELPFUL TIPS FOR MOVING WITH CHILDREN By Rosh Ramanujam

So, you and your partner have decided to take the plunge and move the family. If you are like many families, the decision to move is extremely difficult and often stressful. Every situation is unique and an individual’s ability to adapt, no matter their age, is oftentimes unpredictable (especially if this is the first time your child has faced this situation). Change isn’t easy. The good news is that children are resilient and pretty adaptable. It takes a team approach to make a move successful. The family is a team, and it needs all players to function effectively. If you take the time to prepare your child, listen to their concerns and help them to see the move as an exciting adventure, chances are your family will adjust and adapt just fine. In this month’s article, I’m sharing helpful tips for moving with young children. Communicate What to Expect Young children might not have a good understanding of what “moving” actually means. Give your child a better understanding of what they can expect, and take the time to read some age-appropriate books about moving together. Let the Children Help Pack and Label If your child is old enough, have them help you pack some of their personal belongings. Even younger children can sort their toys and help you wrap objects in newspaper or bubble wrap. If you’ll be putting some things into storage, ask them what they would like to keep and what they don’t mind parting with for a while. 28 | September 2018 PROSPER Magazine

Time Your Move Often times, certain circumstances determine when you have to move. But, if you have a choice, try timing your move to occur at a relatively calm period in your child’s life. Take into consideration school schedules, potty-training and sleeping transitions.

Protecting Your Family & Business

Maintain Routines Once you’re in your new home, some things will have to change, but try to maintain aspects of your life that are most important to your kids. Stick to familiar routines and continue your traditions, for example bedtime and Saturday morning breakfast, if possible. Arrange for a Move-Out and Move-In Cleaning Service As you know, moving can be exhausting. Consider hiring a cleaning service to clean your old house when you’re finished moving out and schedule a cleaning of the new house before you start moving in. Set up Their New Space Now that the move is complete, allow your child time to adjust. While it’s important to unpack the family essentials, unpacking your child’s belongings and setting up their new space should head to the top of your list. Setting up your child’s room and play areas as soon as possible will help alleviate some of their anxiety about moving. Unpacking and decorating can be a fun time for you both. Be flexible and have your child add input into how their new areas are set up.
