TOWN MATTERS

Prosper’s Community Picnic Tradition By Mayor Ray Smith

September, of course, signals the approach of fall. Well, in Texas we enter the autumn season officially, but we don’t necessarily enjoy the changing colors of the leaves on trees like other places. However, other places don’t get to enjoy the tremendous colors and pageantry that we do on football fields and stadiums across the state! Speaking of football, we offer our congratulations to the Prosper ISD on the completion of their multi-sport stadium. It’s an impressive structure and it joins some of the other unique structures that, taken together, help define our Town as a progressive, forward-thinking community. A community, however, that is nevertheless still solidly tied to our history and traditions. One of those important traditions is the annual Community Picnic, set this year for Saturday, September 7 at Frontier Park. That gathering is an important milestone every year, as it brings us together as a diverse group of people and families with a common purpose. Our Town, while growing and expanding at an unprecedented rate, still clings to those highminded ideals and principles of helping and taking care of each other. While other communities struggle while striving to show empathy and compassion, we have made those values a part of the fabric of our community. For example, during the Community Picnic, residents are encouraged to bring canned goods to help resupply Bethlehem Place, the area’s food pantry. We never forget that some members of our community are faced with difficulties, financial and otherwise, and need a helping hand. Residents, 10 | September 2019 WeAreProsper.com

in conjunction with the students and teachers of Prosper ISD schools, participate in the “Hunger is No Picnic” campaign, helping restock the food pantry’s shelves. We believe that no family should be hungry any time of year, but especially as we enter the new school year. Also at the Community Picnic, a new initiative by Cornerstone Assistance Network NTC, called “September Santa,” will ask residents to bring an unwrapped gift for kids to be shared at Christmas. Gifts should be appropriate for infants to 18 years of age and should be between $15 and $40. Prosper has always been a generous and kind community, and these two programs held during our Community Picnic help illustrate that generosity in a tremendous way. Please accept my personal thanks for your participation in these programs. This time of year is very exciting for many reasons, but the heightened anticipation of our annual Christmas Festival is already in the air. Scheduled for Saturday, December 7, the festival, which grows larger every year, will be coming back to the downtown area, set for the grounds of Town Hall on Main Street. The afternoon will conclude with the lighting of the Community Christmas Tree. The final arrangements are being completed now, and we’ll share them as we get closer. A few reminders – please drive safely through school zones, the lives of our young people are worth far more than getting to work or home on time. Also, street construction will be with us for the foreseeable future, so please be mindful of detours, construction zones, and especially workers. Again, the safety of everyone is most important.

Building Leaders One Black Belt at a Time Heather Reynolds

In June, one of our very own Prosper residents took to the mat in the International World Championship as a member of the USA Black Belt Team! Mr. Jared Grice-Hudson, Chief Instructor at Professional Black Belt Academy, was selected to represent the United States in the world championships in Kidderminster, England. After a grueling tryout process, Jared was selected for the team, which was coached by International Champions Robert Powell and Scott Wilkinson. The team trained intensely for months in Rockwall for this invitation-only competition. Hudson’s training consisted of working out 3 – 4 times each week, as well as doing CrossFit training and working with his personal coach and mentor, Grand Master Buddy Hudson. The team arrived in England a few days before the competition began to prepare. The day before the event, which was held in a huge Town Hall in England, the team gathered for their final practice. The venue was incredible with much history and incredible art on the walls and throughout the convention center. As the British Open Championship began, the United States team was scheduled to compete against the United Kingdom – Scotland, England and Wales. The first portion of the competition was Team Forms…and USA walked away with the GOLD! Next up was Team Fighting, and the US fought against England first. Jared was selected to fight as the 5th Man, which is the equivalent to the clean-up batter in baseball. It was a huge honor and privilege for him, and although the England team was favored, the USA was victorious! Next up was Scotland, which was a much larger team and their home crowd was extremely rowdy. When Jared took the mat, USA was ahead, and his job was to keep them ahead…not an easy task considering how large and strong his opponent was. He knew he’d have to fight much smarter and faster. It was a great fight, very intense and very close in points. In the end, Jared finished his fight with a strong head kick, putting him up by 3 points and winning the match! The United States, who came into the competition as the underdogs, walked away with another GOLD MEDAL in Men’s Team Fighting!! The next day were the individual competitions, of which Jared won the GOLD MEDAL in Individual Fighting and the BRONZE MEDAL in Individual Forms!! As we talked about the competition and the sport, it was apparent that he has a true passion for what he does. He is humble, kind and competitive – and loves to share his training and experience with the youth and residents of Prosper. His desire is to help his students achieve their goals and he believes that his experience as an International Gold Medalist is a huge part of that. He has also found a new passion for competing and is looking forward to continuing to make a name for himself on the International Circuit. In the meantime, he is working to achieve his goal of building a successful martial arts school and training his students to the highest level.

Their program offers children increased confidence, the ability to defend themselves (mentally, emotionally and physically), increased self esteem and an appreciation for exercise. Athletes can choose a schedule that truly works for them, whether it be a single class each week or several. And just like the physical curriculum works to improve fitness, flexibility and strength, the Character Development curriculum improves life skills such as Respect, Discipline, Focus, Patience, Acceptance, Kindness and Compassion. It is truly amazing how their students apply the Character Development portion of the program and work so hard make their instructors proud.

A unique offering available for Prosper is the After-School Martial Arts Program, which is a great alternative to traditional daycare. They pick students up from their elementary or middle school and their first order of business are their Leadership Circles to set expectations and respectful rules of engagement. They also offer group martial arts classes during this time to promote fitness and exercise. And once they finish their workouts, students cool down and utilize all the oxygen coursing through their brains to focus on their homework before going home. It’s truly a great program for all involved and a great way for students to gain confidence, focus and discipline during those hours after school. If you want your child to have the ability to train with these International Instructors and Champions, please contact them today to secure your place in their next class!

In August, Professional Black Belt Academy of Prosper expanded their school’s square footage to offer almost twice as much space to their students and families. Their team of nationally certified martial arts instructors have over 35 years of teaching experience among them. They offer martial arts classes, an after-school program and adult training. Students can rest assured that their belt rank will be recognized worldwide, as the curriculum learned is transferrable and accepted across the globe. Chief of Instruction, Grand Master Buddy Hudson, is an internationally known 9th Degree Black Belt in TaeKwonDo and American Karate, a Masters Hall of Fame Inductee and sits on the judges panel of each exam and belt testing at PBBA. Hard Work and Preparation -Prosper Volleyball By Heather Reynolds

We have an amazing program in Prosper High School Volleyball!! For many of our players, volleyball is a year-round sport – they not only represent our PHS Eagles from August – November, but they also play on club teams around the metroplex from December – July. Two weeks before school even began, Prosper Volleyball began their tryouts on August 1st, announced their teams on August 3rd and then played their first game on August 6th! They have been hitting the courts ever since, preparing for their success in one of the toughest districts in the state. Prosper plays their first 9-6A district game against McKinney on Friday, September 13th. It is the success of our district season that ultimately determines how we advance to the playoffs, and Coach Erin Kauffman prepares the team well by stacking the preseason schedule with some of the toughest competition in the area. In the Eagles’ first tournament of the season, The Battle for the Rock, they came away with the Runner-Up trophy. On day one, they defeated defending TAPPS State Champion Prestonwood Christian 3-1, followed by a close 3-2 victory over Frisco Liberty. They then swept Southlake Carroll 3-0 in the semi-finals…but defending 6A State Champions Flower Mound proved to be too much, defeating Prosper 1-3 in the Finals. Outside Hitters Sami Jacobs and Nikki Steinheiser were both named to the All-Tournament Team for their strong efforts. The Lady Eagles then moved on in their pre-season schedule to defeat a strong Frisco Reedy team 3-1 and a close match over Denton Guyer 3-2, but then fell to Byron Nelson – who’s Varsity team is ranked #6 in the Nation. A few days later they traveled to the Leander Volleypalooza Tournament, where they finished 8th out of 66 teams! On day one, they defeated Rockwall Heath and Waller, but lost to Rouse. Day two was a sweep of victories over Waxahachie, Mansfield and Canyon, which placed them into the Gold Bracket for the following day. However, 18 | September 2019 WeAreProsper.com

Prosper lost to both Carroll and Lovejoy in the Gold Bracket. Juniors Sami Jacobs and Bailey Birmingham were both named to the All-Tournament Team as well.

Next up on the schedule, Prosper travelled to Lovejoy to take on the #1 5A ranked team in the State. The Lady Eagles, who have been bit by the injury bug, came out fighting but ultimately fell to the Leopards in 4 close sets. They then came home to face off with defending State Champs Flower Mound. Still riddled with injuries, Prosper managed to keep the match competitive, but ended up losing in 3 straight sets. The Lady Eagles continue to work on their mental toughness as they grow and develop as a team. Looking into the beginning of 9-6A district play, Prosper faces McKinney first, followed by Plano East, McKinney Boyd and Plano West this month. The Lady Eagles are prepared, getting players healthy and are excited to get into the meat of their season. Although they will be training and working one match at a time, their eye is always on the playoff season…and to get there, they must maintain a top 4 finish in this tough division. Let’s all get out there and show our support for these ladies as they begin their road to another State Championship!

Small Focal Space Needs Wow Factor? Try Adding a Container Garden By Jimmie Gibson Jr.

Planting a container garden couldn’t be easier. All you need is potting soil, plants and slow release fertilizer. That said, there are some things that are helpful to know before you get started. Make sure your container has enough drainage - Drainage may be the single biggest factor on whether your plants live or die. Make sure that your pot has a big enough hole or holes in the bottom to let excess water drain away. There are many garden pots sold in stores that have one tiny hole in the bottom that will not let enough water escape, so you will either have to be very careful in watering the pot, or even better, you should add more holes. If your pot is metal, you can poke holes by using a hammer with either a large nail or screwdriver. If your pot is ceramic, it can be a little more difficult to add holes, but I’ve had good luck using a drill with a ceramic bit. Don’t forget to wear safety goggles because it is common for pieces of the container or dust to fly around and you don’t want to risk getting them in your eyes. Remember, the more holes the better drainage. Many more plants are killed by drowning than not enough water. They second part of the drainage equation is keeping the soil in while letting the water out. I like to use window screening over the holes, but I have also used coffee filters, paper towels and newspaper in the bottom of my pots. Whatever you do though, avoid the suggestion to put gravel in the bottom of your pots to increase drainage. It doesn’t work, and in fact is counterproductive. It is also a good idea to elevate your pots, so that the water isn’t blocked from exiting out of the drainage holes. There are any numbers of ways to elevate your plants, but pot feet are the easiest.

22 | September 2019 WeArePROSPER.com

Remove your plants from their nursery pots carefully - When I first started gardening, I would grab it by the stem and pull to get it out of its pot. Often, I would just pull the top of the plant off sometimes killing it before I even got started. To avoid this, if you have a six pack of plants, that is made of flexible plastic, hold the plant close to the soil surface (I make a v out of my fingers and place them on either side of the stem) and squeeze the plants out of their holder from the bottom. If the plant is in a nursery pot, try pushing it out from the bottom. If it is root bound, you may have tear or cut any roots off that are sticking out the bottom hole of the pot and slide a knife around the inside of the pot, before the plant will slide out. In extreme cases, you may have to break the pot to free the plant. If your plant is root bound, which is often the case, make sure to break up the plant’s roots, either by tearing them or cutting them. Some people simply rough up the roots on the outside by rubbing them, but I’m a little more aggressive and often tear or cut a compacted root ball so the roots will be able to grow freely, not in a circular pattern, which can strangle a plant. Mix fertilizer into your soil - It took me years to realize that I was starving my plants to death. Most plants need food to survive and the easiest way I’ve found to provide food is to mix a slow release fertilizer into your potting soil before planting your container. I use a granular all-purpose fertilizer into my soil. I also then feed my plants with a diluted, liquid fertilizer every week or every other week during the growing season. Planting - There are two main things to know when planting in a container. You want to plant it at the same level that it sits in its nursery pot. In other words, the level of the soil should stay the same and no more or less of the plant’s stem or crown should be covered. You also want to make sure there are no air pockets and your plants’ roots are

surrounded by soil. In a crowded pot, sometimes it is difficult to put soil in between the plants, but you will need to make sure that you do, or the roots will dry out if they are in an air pocket, and your plant can die. Sometimes you just need to feel around a crowded pot and stuff soil into any holes you feel. It’s also a good idea to water a pot right after you plant it, which settles the soil. At that point you can go back and fill in any holes or depressions with extra soil. Caring for your container garden - Watering is more art than science. You will need to know what conditions your plant or plants prefer. However, the majority of plants like to be kept in moist soil-not wet--but damp. To figure out if your plants need water, you can stick your finger down into the soil, up to the second knuckle. If your finger tip feels dry, add water. Be sure to water slowly and make sure the water is going to your plant’s roots--not bouncing off the soil and running down a space that can form when the soil contracts, between the soil and the inside of your pot. You want to water deeply so the water gets all the way down to the plant’s roots; the best way to know if you’ve accomplished this is to water until it starts to run out the bottom of your container. Until next time...Happy Gardening!! -Jimmie Send your landscaping and gardening questions to Jimmie Gibson Jr. at http:// www.absolutelybushedlandscaping. com or jimmie@absolutelybushed.com Jimmie is a Prosper resident and the owner of Absolutely Bushed Landscaping Company, an award winning, family and veteran owned and operated business created in 1980 to provide the highest quality custom Outdoor Renovation available to homeowners in the Dallas Ft. NEVER FORGET By Heather Reynolds

September 11, 2001 is a date that most of us remember vividly…we know exactly where we were and what we were doing at the moment we got the call or saw it on TV. It was the day our nation was horrifically attacked and the day that thousands of first responders and ordinary citizens perished. So many lost…people who had simply gone to work that morning, just doing what they had always done. It was tragic and frightening and it shook our nation to its core. And it is for those we lost that we vow to Never Forget. Dr. Tom Bietsch, Orthodontist

Imagine, you are in the middle of your workday and your child’s orthodontic appointment is in thirty minutes. Instead of leaving work early to drive across town so you can pick your child up from school and take them to their appointment, you were able to stay at work while your child was able to make their orthodontic appointment. Well, you can if your child is a patient at Bietsch Orthodontics. Dr. Bietsch brings a thirty-six-foot custom mobile orthodontic office to all Gunter, Celina and Prosper schools for his patients’ routine orthodontic appointments.

The convenience of Dr. Bietsch’s mobile bus, combined with his nineteen years of experience, sets his practice apart from any other orthodontic office in Texas. His unbelievable care for each patient and ability to create perfection within your child’s smile is why so many parents and patients love going to Bietsch Orthodontics.

Dr. Bietsch’s “Bietsch Brace Bus” has everyone talking and for good reason. Parents couldn’t be happier with the ease of one less appointment that they have to manage into their already busy schedule. Parents receive a video update of their child and Dr. Bietsch at the time of their appointment that explains how their child’s orthodontic treatment is progressing, if there was a change in a wire that may cause soreness later in the day, how their child is doing on their oral hygiene and what they can expect for their child’s next orthodontic appointment.

Bietsch Orthodontics 972-347-2222 221 N. Preston, Suite A Prosper, Texas 75078 BietschOrthodontics.com

Parents win here at Bietsch Orthodontics because we bring orthodontics to the schools, so they do not have to miss any work. Students win as well because they are out of class much less time and do not have to miss that after school practice or game because they needed to go to their orthodontic appointment. Dr. Bietsch sees how demanding parent’s schedules are and even more with multiple children, that is why he has created the mobile brace bus; a service that makes another doctor appointment for your child and you that much easier. Dr. Bietsch travels with his entire team too. At all mobile bus appointments, your child will be accompanied by Dr. Bietsch, his treatment coordinator, scheduling coordinator, financial coordinator and his three-chair side ortho assistants. Long appointments such as getting braces put on or taken off will be done in the primary office at Bietsch Orthodontics, but all adjustment appointments can be accommodated at your child’s school.
