Each January 1st brings about reflection over the past year, and hope for the next. 2012 was an amazing year of growth for our town, and we are honored to welcome all of our new Prosper neighbors, and this is only the beginning! As we all know, 2013 will bring an exponential amount of additional growth, both in residences and retail businesses. Once a new visitor enters a business, school or home in Prosper, and is able to experience our warm and welcoming community, they can’t help but want to be a part of it! That spirit and pride is the heartbeat of our town. Let’s “resolve” as a community to maintain our small town roots as we continue to grow and flourish. In light of recent events, we would like to recognize our amazing school district, families and children. We are so blessed to live in a community that employs such incredibly caring teachers, staff and administrators. We thank you from the bottoms of our hearts for loving, educating and shaping the lives of our children. It’s been said more than once that children are our future… and there is no better time than a brand new year to acknowledge the impact that our educators have on our precious children. We wish all of our readers the Happiest and Most “Prosper”-ous of New Years! With Prosper Pride,

In His Presence What’s the time…
It is time to make the change. Start working out (again). Start saving for college. Make more time for family. The beginning of a new year is the ideal time to make positive adjustments to our life. However, according to a Franklin Covey Survey, more than a third of our resolutions will be forgotten by the end of January. Less than a quarter will keep a year. The odds are against us, but still we want change. In Mark 1 Jesus says, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news.” There are two words in Greek that are translated in English as time: Chronos and Kairos. Chronos (think chronological) refers to passing time on a calendar. Like the date January 1, Chronos time only measures the earth’s transit around the sun. Kairos, the word translated as “time” in Mark, refers to a pregnant moment of decision. In a kairos moment, God’s will can bring the real and lasting change in our lives, our family and our world. A broken relationship is healed. A selfless act of service is extended to one in need.
A child feels the unconditional love of a parent. God’s best work is done in changing hearts, not just routines.
The odds are against us, but still we want change. Please go to the gym, save more and schedule your time. Be active and be the change you want to see around you. But remember that real change is found in what God has already started… in the goodness and blessing that is waiting for the right moment to bloom in you. Be ready! Doug Kriz is the pastor of Grace Christian Church. A young and growing congregation for Prosper currently worshiping Sunday at 10:30 at Baker Elementary School. www.graceprosper.org.

Healthy Solutions by Dr. Jon Thomas
As we go into the winter months, we find ourselves in the midst of flu season. Influenza is one of the most common viral infections preventable by vaccination. The peak time for flu infection is in January and February of each year. Flu (Influenza) is a common virus that changes its viral structure over time, making it resistant to the body’s immune system. For this reason, vaccine manufacturers produce an updated vaccine preparation for each year’s expected types of flu viruses. The Intramuscular flu shot is recommended for patients ages 6 months to 65 years of age and is safe during pregnancy.
Getting the influenza vaccine is the most effective way to reduce the chance of becoming infected with the flu. The vaccine usually protects 50-80 percent of those who are vaccinated from getting the flu. If you are infected with the flu after being vaccinated, your symptoms are likely to be less severe and of shorter duration than for those who are not vaccinated. People who receive the influenza vaccine have a lower chance of severe illness, hospitalization, and death from influenza. If you have flu-like symptoms (temperature above 102 F, headaches, cough, body aches), please call our office for a same-day evaluation for an in-office flu test, with results available in 10 minutes. If you have the flu, there is an antiviral treatment called Tamiflu that will be given twice daily for 5 days, regardless of when you developed the flu-like symptoms. Dr. Thomas does recommend that patients should receive their flu shots in a physician’s office in order to review the patient’s medical history and address any questions patients may have. The most common side effect of the flu shot is tenderness or redness at the injection site, which usually resolves without additional treatment. There are a few situations when you should not receive a flu shot. In general, any current illness with a fever, or any
allergy to eggs, or a reaction to any previous immunization, are reasons not to have the flu shot and you should talk to your doctor before proceeding with the flu shot or any other vaccination. Influenza is one of the most common medical problems in our community each winter. Call 972-347-5778 to schedule a same day appointment with Dr. Thomas to discuss your immunizations, or for any sick visit. We electronically prescribe our medications and we have in-office flu swabs, strep swabs, and monospot testing. Don’t forget these simple tips to prevent the transmission of infection: cover your cough or sneeze, and wash your hands after touching the face, before meals, or handling food. Centennial Family Medicine now provides physician Saturday appointments once to twice monthly and 24/7 appointment scheduling on Zoc Doc. Visit our website at www.ProsperFamilyDoctor.com to schedule your appointment today!

Business Spotlight
McKinney OB/GYN at Baylor Board Certified Obstetrics & Gynecology Certified Nurse Midwife
McKinney OB-GYN is a medical practice devoted to providing the very best of care to women of all ages and is strategically located near Prosper at the new Baylor Medical Center of McKinney. All types of obstetrical and gynecological care are provided to women from adolescence through the childbearing years and into menopause. The goal of the practice is to offer women the individualized care they desire and deserve. For instance, not only are physicians a part of the practice, but a certified nurse midwife (CNM) is also available to attend and provide care to patients of her own. The providers at McKinney OB-GYN allow patients to “have it their way” while they receive quality care, whether it be for pregnancy or gynecological services. Dr. Larry Pierce, the founder of McKinney OB-GYN, has been in practice in the northern Collin county area for over 30 years. A native of Dallas (and now a Prosper resident along with his wife, Lisa, and three of their school-aged children), Dr. Pierce was the first Board Certified OB-GYN in the area. He graduated from Southwestern Medical School in Dallas and trained at St. Paul and Parkland Hospitals. Dr. Pierce has served as Chief of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Chief of Staff at our nearby community hospitals. Currently, in addition to practicing at Baylor Medical Center of McKinney, he is also happy to serve as Baylor’s Chief Quality and Patient Safety Officer. He is deeply committed to making sure that all patients receive only the best quality of medical care. Dr. Pierce is proud to have had his oldest son, Brock Pierce, join him in the practice last year.

Dr. Brock Pierce (commonly referred to as “Dr. Brock” by the staff, nurses, and patients) graduated from the University of Texas Medical School at San Antonio and then trained in OB-GYN at Parkland Hospital in Dallas. He was voted “Best Resident” at Parkland during one of his four years of training. Dr. Brock brings to the practice the use of the newest technology in OB-GYN surgery, such as the use of full laparoscopic and robotic techniques. Aliza Chkaiban, CNM, obtained her Masters Degree and trained in Midwifery at the University of Texas Medical Branch. She was Board Certified in Nurse Midwifery in 2005, and since then she has been delivering babies and providing gynecological care to women. Aliza joined the practice in 2010. For women looking for compassionate, “hands on” midwifery care, they need to look no further! Aliza’s patients have only the highest praise for the care she provides to them. As one of Aliza’s recent patients stated, “Aliza viewed the process of labor and delivery as a natural event. With grace and patience, she helped me bring my beautiful son into the world with a steady hand, a caring heart, and no medications!” This is the sort of care for which Aliza constantly strives; indeed, the physicians of the practice are constantly available to her for any obstetrical (and even gynecological) concerns which may arise as she cares for her patients.
Joy Whitworth, RN, provides the greatest and most personal care possible to all patients of the practice; she has done so for 25 years. Joy is always available for patients who call the office for assistance and/or questions.
The providers of McKinney OB-GYN are quite excited about their recent move to the new Baylor Medical Center of McKinney. They enjoy providing care to the women of the area, and they are all accepting new patients. Their office is located at the Professional Office Building next door to Baylor Medical Center of McKinney. The address is: 5236 W. University Drive (Highway 380) Suite 3150 McKinney, Texas 75071 For questions or to make an appointment, please call 972-562-1000. At Cornerstone, our vision is of a community coming together to share the Gospel and help family units escape the cycle of need for good by providing resources, tools, and education. From our inception, we have prayed that health care would one day be part of the services we are able to offer. God has answered that prayer in an incredible way! Starting January 23rd, 2013 (our third year of ministry), we will be able to offer healthcare to our neighbors in need! This made is possible through Cornerstone’s partnership with Family Focused Care and their Family Nurse Practitioner, Marcy Henson. As a health care provider, Marcy’s goal is to empower patients to take charge of their own health by providing them valuable information that allows them to make informed and educated decisions regarding their personal health. She will do the same with our neighbors.

The Eagle’s Nest By Paula LuAllen, RN, BSN Prosper High School Health Science
P
rosper HS began the Health Science Technology courses about 5 years ago to any student who had an interest in health care, becoming a health care aide, or attending nursing or medical school. Three tiers of classes offer students a wonderful exposure to many aspects of health care. The first tier is a sophomore based class (1 credit) that introduces concepts of health care, different types of health care professions, basic human anatomy and some disease processes. We try to accommodate as many interested students as possible. The second tier, junior level class (2 credits) gives students the opportunity to actually attend hospitals and clinics, and shadow health care professionals in many different job settings. Students observe everything from a radiologist to a labor and delivery nurse. This is a favorite of the students, and through the classroom curriculum and hands on experience really helps them to have a better understanding of how they see themselves fitting into health care and pursuing a career. This course is limited to 30-40 students, so there is an application process. The third tier class, (2 credits) branches into two different categories. One stem takes you into the nursing home setting and prepares students for certification in

Students study and Ask for the “PISD Special”and learn specific skills Prosper ISD Special Papa Johns will Donate $1 Back to Prosper ISD for every order! in the classroom. The most exciting thing about this program is the confirmation for a student as to whether this is the correct field for them. Colleges and universities are always interested in these students, because they know the commitment it takes to complete these courses. When allied health, nursing schools and medical schools see these courses on a student’s transcript and students still want to apply to their colleges, they look at these kids as “sure things”.

Put Off Procrastinating – You are never going to have 5 straight uninterrupted hours. If you did, the last thing you would do is organize a whole room. Make a one hour appointment with yourself and tackle only part of a room, a disc of photos or a stack of paper.
M
A New Year means a new Top 10 Resolutions List and no doubt, “Get Organized” is on there. If you have decided that 2013 is your year to find everything you need and make the best use of your time, perhaps my Top 5 Organizing Tips will help you get started.
Next Month............
Prosper’s Person of 2012
Minute to Win It – Or organize it. You can make a dent in chaos in a brief amount of time. Tackle a small space, like a drawer, and enjoy instant gratification.
It’s Not About the Stuff – Clutter is what you see, but how it got there is what you want to tackle. Organizing as a process. Once you apply the right process and create the best system, the stuff will find its rightful place.
It Doesn’t Have to Look Like Pottery Barn – If you can find what you’re looking for in a matter of seconds, you are organized! Some people are visual and need things out to find them; some prefer clear counters and desktops. As long as you are not wasting time on endless searches, you are on the right track.
“I RESOLVE TO GET ORGANIZED!”
Rome Wasn’t Built in a Day – Your home, office or car didn’t get chaotic overnight and there is no magic wand to wave it all into order in an instant. Be realistic about how long your process to get organized is going to take and you will likely stick with it until your goal is reached.

Is NOW the time to Refinance? by Angela Deaton, Branch Manager PrimeLending, Frisco, Texas
Record-low interest rates have many homeowners considering refinancing their mortgages, but loan experts advise them to consider more than just the tantalizing low rates when making this decision. The refinancing process includes closing fees, which vary from a couple thousand dollars to upward of $5,000. Saving only .5% on the interest rate, the difference between refinancing from a 4.5% to a 4% rate, means it could take years to recoup the fees attached to the refinancing – fees that you wouldn’t pay otherwise. Should You Stay or Should You Go? “When deciding whether to refinance, a key determiner should be how long you plan to stay in the house,” says Angela Deaton, branch manager and senior loan officer with PrimeLending in Frisco. According to mortgage experts, people stay in their home for an average of seven years. “If you intend to stay in your home for that long and you can get a better interest rate, it generally makes sense to refinance since you’ll likely recoup the closing costs over that time,” Deaton says. “For those looking to move in a couple of years, refinancing might not make financial sense.”
For example: If your closing costs are $4,000 and you save $100 a month on your mortgage by refinancing, it would take you a little more than three years to recoup the cost. On the flip side, if you are saving $300 a month by lowering your interest rate, it would only take about a year to pay it back. Homeowners considering refinancing should also take into account the equity amount. Refinancing a mortgage is like starting over. Refinancing into a new, 30-year mortgage on a loan you’ve been paying for six years means that you’ll be paying the new mortgage for 30 years instead of 24. Refinancing takes you back to the beginning of the process. Starting over can be Helpful… But, the benefits of starting over with a new mortgage may be entirely worth it.
“When deciding whether to refinance, a key determiner should be how long you plan to stay in the house,” Homeowners are able to: * Get a fixed-rate mortgage and decrease the risk of changing interest rates * Decrease payment amounts by securing a lower interest rate * Shorten the term of loan and pay off the loan faster – which saves money on interest
Make sure that if you decide to refinance, it is not an impulsive reaction to one, singular factor like suddenly falling rates. To make the best decision for you and your financial situation, you’ll want to consider all the contributing factors such as how long you plan to stay in the home and how going through the process would help you achieve your long-term financial goals. Questions to consider include: * How much will you save each month? * How much will it cost to refinance? * Will refinancing change the length of the loan? * How long do you expect to stay in the house? * Have you requested amortization tables from your trusted Loan Officer to know how much you will actually save from this process?
