Letter From The

SUMMER LIVING is about relaxation and spending time with family. We hope that everyone has adjusted to a schedule without school and homework, and that you are finding precious time to unwind from our usually over-scheduled lives. One more month, and we will be gearing up to do it all over again! However, while we have the time, please be sure to join us on July 5th at Friday at the Park – we will be showing “The Lorax” at Frontier Park, and will again have hot dogs, games for the kids, and this month will try a Washer Toss tournament for the adults. All proceeds are benefitting some of Prosper’s amazing non profits, so please come out to support those organizations – and enjoy a great evening of music, camaraderie, games and an outdoor movie!

We are always proud to be Americans, but never more than on Independence Day! A day of celebration for our great nation, the freedoms we are given, and the sacrifices of those who fought to give them to us. As we gather with our families for our 4th of July celebrations, let’s all remember those that gave us our freedoms. All gave some, but some gave ALL. May God bless Prosper, and the United States of America!! With Prosper Pride,

Jason & Heather Reynolds

Drink Up and Eat Up This Summer- Stay Hydrated! By Dionna Black, Certified Dietician and Personal Trainer, The Cell, Inc.

W

ater makes up approximately 60% of your body’s weight. Not only can drinking water and all its varieties out there these days quench your thirst, grapes, watermelon, grapefruits, oranges, squash, broccoli and eggplant can as well! These fruits and vegetables have a high fluid content. Additional sources of fluids are 100% fruit and vegetable juices, clear soups, and herbal teas.

Since water is the best source of hydration, try some of these tricks to add variety: •

Add flavor to water by adding fruit slices such as lemon, lime, or orange.

Put a peppermint candy in your glass/bottle of water. It provides flavor with minimal calories.

Add a splash of 100% cranberry or fruit juice.

Flavored seltzer waters without added sugars are great water alternatives.

The benefits of maintaining a hydrated body are endless. To name a few, a hydrated body can enjoy a life free of chronic constipation by helping move food through the intestines, help regulate body temperature, experience less muscle fatigue by maintaining a balance of fluids and electrolytes and keep your skin looking good. Listen to your body. Drink more liquids during exercise and hot weather. You want to avoid dehydration. Dehydration happens when the body eliminates more fluids than it absorbs. Drinking inadequate amounts of hydrating fluids during exercise, hot weather, or daily activities can cause the body to use up its stored water. If your activity last more than one hour, diluted fruit juices or sports drinks are the best source to replace carbohydrates for energy plus minerals to replace lost electrolytes (sodium, potassium, magnesium) in your sweat. Avoid alcohol and caffeinated beverages such as coffee, tea, and sodas. These are diuretics, which can rob your body of fluids and cause you to eliminate water from your body. Whether it is water, a close low sugar cousin or a high-fluid fruit or vegetable that you choose, you are bound to stay hydrated. So, drink up and eat up this summer- stay hydrated!

Terry Mabrey, his wife Carrie and their three children have made their home in Prosper. They have entrenched themselves into our community through their schools, sports, activities, and most recently, with the acquisition of Prosper’s newest eatery – Black River CoffeeBar & Grill. The Mabrey’s are no strangers to the coffee bar industry. They owned and operated a very successful store, Undergrounds Coffee, in New Mexico prior to moving to Prosper. So, when the opportunity to purchase Destin Café presented itself, they jumped at the chance to show Prosper what they could do. Black River CoffeeBar & Grill officially opened for business on April 1st, and they’ve been working hard since then to provide a unique and fresh menu, along with a level of service and quality that we can all be proud of. Black River offers a fresh, made to order menu, complete with sauces and dressings that are made from scratch. Their meat is locally raised, hormone, antibiotic and steroid free, and supplied by a farmer owned full service butcher shop. They also use a local bakery that provides all natural, additive and preservative free buns, hoagies and breads. This is not your typical fast food lunch or dinner café. They take the time to prepare each delectable order, and the staff offers excellent customer service. Menu items range from the Black River Club on Italian wheat berry bread, to the Not Your Mama’s Grilled Cheese on grilled Sourdough, to the Grilled Chicken Sandwich with freshly made chipotle mayo on a toasted Ciabatta bun, to the Black River Burger – a 7 oz grass fed Wagyu burger on a toasted Brioche bun. And, for dinner they add in their famous Memphis Style Pulled Pork Sandwich, served with house slaw on a toasted Brioche bun, the BBQ Sandwich, made with smoked pulled pork smothered in mesquite BBQ and the Baja Burger, a 7 oz grass fed Wagyu burger with pepperjack cheese, avocado and chipotle mayo on a toasted Brioche bun. A fresh menu this great is definitely worth the wait!

Their smooth-tasting coffee is pure perfection. Black River is passionate about making a great cup of coffee, and doing it right way! The espresso coffee beans and their roasting process is different than other coffee franchises. Each espresso drink is freshly prepared, using a consistent, flat and even tamp, and individually ground wood roasted espresso coffee beans. The wood fire roast offers the most traditional taste and quality, with a slight smoky flavor and a certain sweetness that cannot be achieved by the more modern method of roasting with propane. And, in addition to the traditional CoffeeBar menu, Terry offers some fun “off the menu” specialties, as well as smoothies. And, while you’re there in the morning, don’t forget to order your breakfast tacos – delicious!!

Summer Treats

Family Features

Nothing says summer more than baseball, Amer-

ica’s favorite pastime, and refreshing frozen treats. During these warm months, find the kids something fun to do to fill their days of leisure. Here are five super summer activities sure to be a grand slam for your family. Encourage your kids to think beyond the couch, and add a little excitement to their summer routine. -Make it a triple play in your backyard by setting up the sprinkler, playing limbo with the water hose and laying out a tarp for a do-it-yourself water slide area. -Gather up the team for a visit to your local library. This is a perfect way to get some of their summer reading completed. -Hit a home run with ice necklaces and bracelets. Freeze flowers and other baubles in an ice tray with a ribbon dangling into each cube. As the jewelry melts, your kids will cool down in style. -Cover your bases by always keeping cold treats stocked and ready in the freezer. Fun, fruity ice pops are always a favorite. -Score big by making your own homemade lemonade or sun tea. Kids can get creative by adding fresh fruit or other favorite flavors.

Step up to the plate for fun Your kids will love these summertime recipes, inspired by a partnership between Bomb Pop and Little League Baseball and Softball. You’ll score big when you invite the kids into the kitchen to create edible bats, their favorite baseball players and a super sweet scoreboard.

WHERE YOU ARE, THEY ARE. Car thieves in Texas steal close to 100,000 cars and trucks annually, and burglarize thousands more. It’s enough to make you scream. When you leave your vehicle, HIDE your things, LOCK your car, and TAKE your keys. Remember…YOU HOLD THE KEY.

We, at the Prosper Police Department, just want to remind everyone to take measures to protect yourselves and don’t make yourself an easy target for crime and to avoid being a victim of a burglary of your motor vehicle. With town growth, also comes crime increase. More people, more cars, more opportunities for criminals. I have looked back over the numbers from the last few years and in 2011 we had 26 reported BMV’s, 2012 it tripled to about 78 reported BMV’s, and so far in 2013 we have had 58 reported BMV’s. The year is only half over and we are quickly reaching the number we had for the entire year for 2012. An important thing to keep in mind is that only about 1% of these were forced entry burglaries where the thief actually “broke into” the vehicle. The majority of these burglaries are crimes of opportunity and the vehicles are left unlocked. Not only are the vehicles left unsecured, but valuables are left inside the vehicles - things like purses, wallets, cash, garage door openers, guns, GPS units, iPods, and other various electronics. Summer Living

HIDE LOCK TAKE

We, at the Prosper Police Department, are asking you to take a moment to ensure that your vehicles are secured at night before you go to bed. Try to park in your garage if possible and remove your valuables from your vehicles. Even if you think you locked your car, check it again before you go to bed. If your car has an alarm, use it! If your car is burglarized, don’t touch anything - call us immediately. Don’t wait a few hours or days. Also, make sure you have serial numbers for electronics or guns. Engrave your name or a unique marking on your items. Help us help you and don’t allow yourself to be a victim! If you would like more information about what you can do to protect yourself or your property, please contact dispatch to speak to an officer by calling 972-347-9002 or email Officer Erin Hubbard at erin_hubbard@prospertx.gov.

In His Presence

Give Me A Break

The 10 commandments endure not only as good laws for society but rules to live by. Don’t Kill. Got it. Don’t Steal. No problem. When we tell a fib or let the wrong word slip, we acknowledge it wasn’t our best moment and pledge to do better. But there is one commandment that we openly disobey. In fact, we compete to see who can violate it most. Don’t believe me? When was the last time you told your friends you were too busy to rest?

“Remember the Sabbath and keep it holy.” In the interest of preserving our overscheduled lifestyle, this commandment is usually interpreted as, “spend an hour at church listening to the preacher.” Originally, a day of Sabbath was commanded as a respite from work and the busy-ness that packs the other six days of the week. In the book of Exodus, God liberates the Hebrew people from relentless slave labor in Egypt. God wanted to teach them that they didn’t belong to the Egyptian slave masters any-

more; they belonged to God. “Belonging” to God doesn’t mean endless work. It doesn’t mean living in fear that you haven’t done enough yet. When God commands us to remember the Sabbath, God has demanded that we take time to be refreshed, to enjoy the goodness that exists all around us, to cherish our loved ones... to remember that God is good.

“I have come that they may have life and have it abundantly.” (John 10:10 NRSV).

But let’s not kid ourselves. Sabbath is hard. It takes practice to unplug from the demands of life. It takes discipline to make space in our overscheduled lives. My prayer for you this summer is to carve out some time for holy rest. Spend some time by the pool. Go for a walk in the evening. Prepare a meal as a family. Read something that inspires you and feeds your spirit. Indulge in whatever it is that reminds you that God is good and wants what is best foryou. God wants your obedience, but God doesn’t want a worn out shell. Let’s help each other to find the rhythms and practices that bring life. “I have come that they may have life and have it abundantly.” (John 10:10 NRSV). Doug Kriz is the pastor of Grace Christian Church, a young and growing congregation for Prosper. Join us for worship Sunday at 10:30 at Baker Elementary School. www.graceprosper.org

Therapeutic Horsemanship At ManeGait Therapeutic Horsemanship in McKinney, lives of children and adults are improved by the healing power of the horse with the support of a dedicated and caring community. With 20 four-hooved therapists serving an average of 110 riders each year, hundreds of volunteers are required in every aspect of ManeGait from barn work to helping in the arena during lessons to helping in the office to keep ManeGait flourishing. Our volunteers come from all walks of life and each has his or her own story to tell about their time at ManeGait.

met the staff and got to witness what made ManeGait so special. “Everyone was so willing to give of their time to guide ManeGait financially and make it a better place for the riders,” Brenda says. It wasn’t long before Brenda wanted to spend more time in the arena with our riders. She went through volunteer training and became a side-walker during lessons. “It is so heartwarming By Reagan Hobson to see the riders respond to the instructors and to witness some of the personal accomplishments of the individual riders,” she says. “It is also very touching to get high fives from the riders and thank yous from the parents.”

Healing POWER

For Brenda Alexander of Prosper, her entire family has their own ManeGait story. Brenda became involved with ManeGait through her job at Avalon Consulting, LLC. Her boss is on the Board of Directors and had no shortage of great things to say about this wonderful place. Being an accountant, Brenda’s first volunteering opportunity was on the finance committee, one of the many volunteer-lead committees at ManeGait. It was there she

Because of her experiences, Brenda knew she had to get her family involved. They began volunteering at events, and now ManeGait’s annual Gaitapalooza festival is also their annual family event. “Everyone was so willing to give of their time to guide ManeGait financially and make it a better place for the riders” Now the girls and their mom volunteer together in lessons and in doing so have strengthened their relationships. Brenda states, “It is a special mother/daughter bonding experience. We will always treasure the times we have together and remember some of the special times in the arena.” You and your family can volunteer too.
