I

love Spring…I love everything about it. After months of shorter, colder days it is refreshing to finally be able to get outside for some sunshine and fresh air. Springtime always seems to bring with it a sense of renewal – the greening of the grass and leaves, the budding of the flowers, the chirping of the baby birds and the scampering of new bunny families throughout the landscape. It is peaceful and energizing all at the same time! As we enter another new season, it is a reminder of how quickly time goes! It seems like a few weeks ago that we were wishing the kids a great first day of school…and now we are down to the last nine weeks. In just two short months, another school year will be over and summer will be upon us. I can hardly believe it! I recently heard this saying and it rings a bit too true…the days are long, but the years are short. We hope you all get the chance to get out and enjoy the beauty that Springtime brings. It is the perfect time to soak up some Vitamin D, spruce up your landscape and just enjoy the gift of our little community. While we may be “growing” like crazy, it is up to us to keep the small town charm of Prosper, Texas. We are PROSPER!!

Town Matters

T wn Matters From the Mayor’s Desk

By Mayor Ray Smith

If I had a nickel for every time someone in Town asked about when we were getting a stand-alone library, I bet I’d be in a position to open Ray Smith Savings and Loan. For years, it’s been the question on people’s minds, well, second perhaps to when we were getting a grocery store. I now have an answer for both of those questions! The new Kroger at the intersection of Preston Road and Prosper Trail is the first of several grocery stores that will serve the residents of the Town. That store will be followed by a Walmart Supercenter and as many as two other Kroger stores. I know Prosper residents will patronize the new Kroger store, confirming the grocery chain’s decision to come to Town. As for the library, the Council and staff have been working to finalize the details on the Prosper Town Hall, which will devote half of the first floor and a third of the second floor to a brand new library. It’s still a little way off until the doors open, but we are nevertheless excited about the new facility. As you know, we have been sharing the library at Reynolds Middle School for several years. While we appreciate the opportunity, such an arrangement limits our ability to open the library to the public during the day because the school uses it exclusively. And, because of its small space, it’s difficult to hold community meetings there, and our lending options are also somewhat constrained, because it is, first and foremost, a middle school library. Interestingly, those of you who’ve been here a while might remember that, for several years, we were also sharing the librarian with Celina. So, not

12

Prosper Magazine

only were we having to share the library space with another entity, we didn’t even have our own librarian! The arrival of Leslie Scott, though, as our very own librarian changed that. It was the first step in our journey toward library self-sufficiency. Leslie has worked toward securing accreditation, and she and her staff have done a wonderful job of growing our library, its programs and its popularity. I must also mention the work of the Library Board and the Friends of the Library. All of these wonderful volunteers, both past and present, have been instrumental in making our library relevant and helping it grow. This month, the library will take the highly-popular Story Time on the road for every Thursday, instead of just the first Thursday of the month as customary. On April 7, Story Time hits PAC Fitness, where kids will learn about eating healthy, and taking care of their bodies. They'll even have a short workout. On April 14, it’s the Prosper ISD Transportation Building. There, the kids will hear about what it takes to be a bus driver, learn about the buses, and maybe even get to sit inside a school bus. Then, it’s on to Lakes of Prosper Park on April 21. Field day activities of all kinds are planned. And, finally on April 28, it’s a trip to Prosper Mathnasium. The kids will learn about how Mathnasium helps students learn and they’ll have fun with some interesting math facts. We are very pleased with the tremendous work done by the library staff and we’re extremely excited about the new library at Town Hall. And, frankly, I think I like the idea of the new library more than opening my own savings and loan!

The Mighty Eagle Band Goes to Disney By Victoria Millen

F

one looked hard enough, it was possible to see at least 8 band kids in every country, probably more. But all too soon the band’s time in Epcot came to a close and they loaded the busses, eager for their heads to hit their pillows when they got back to the hotel.

Day 1 - The Airport Trials The band members had a flash of déjà vu when they arrived at the airport “dark and early,” (Mr. Alstrin’s favorite term) just as they had for countless marching rehearsals during marching season. The similarities to marching season ended there as the band members lined up to get their tickets and embark on their journey to the Magic Kingdom. Shockingly, no one had a bag over 50 pounds. After getting their tickets, all that was left was the TSA gauntlet. Thankfully, all members came out in one piece and reconvened at their respective gates to wait for their flight. However, some band members were first time fliers and were naturally anxious. Luckily, Southwest Airlines made their fight special by pulling them up into the cockpit to ease their minds and show them how the plane worked. When the band members disembarked from their plane, they were more than ready to go to their first stop on the trip, Disney’s Epcot. After racing to baggage claim and picking up their bags, the band kids settled in to wait for their busses. Now, this was not an empty wait, each band member prepared in their own way for Epcot; some changed, some broke out food and other supplies, some even broke out the Disney pins they were eager to trade. The preparations were soon completed and, luckily, the wait for the busses was soon completed as well; the busses arrived to transport the students to Disney. Upon arrival, the band members soon scattered to take the park by storm. The Prosper High School Mighty Eagle Band was everywhere, some in Tomorrowland, but most scattered around the countries of the world. If

Day 2 - Recording Memories When dawn came, so did breakfast, along with approximately a hundred or so band kids. After scarfing down all they could handle, they got on the busses to depart for Disney’s Animal Kingdom. While there, student favorites were Expedition Everest (some kids rode it 3 times); the Safari Excursion; and to some fanatics, pin trading. But, once again, their time at the park ended too soon. Due to the sheer number of players on the trip, the band had to be split into two groups. Color guard went off to do their own thing at workshop to prepare to perform in the park. Band 2 went to Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and Band 1 departed to go backstage for a Disney recording. Once there, the band members were treated to a clinic led by a Disney performing artist. The clinic started like any other, with the clinician asking the students what they looked for in a rehearsal, while bribing them to answer with Ears for the Arts pins as rewards. When the clinician had exhausted talk of rehearsal etiquette, it was time to play, and the students were in for a shock. In order to fully appreciate the life of a performing or recording artist, all of their songs would be recorded to better mimic the stress of those professions. The students found out that sometimes the only rehearsal a Disney musician may have before months of performances is a one-time appearance at the park in the dead of night. After that the performer is expected to get everything perfect, at every single performance. A mind-blowing fact that the clinician told the students is that in a recording session, when the French horns spent 5 minutes learning their part, it would have cost Disney six to eight thousand dollars!

or many teenagers, the first day of spring break was a morning to sleep in and forget about school for a week. But for select members of the Prosper High School Mighty Eagle Band, the first day of spring break signaled their departure to Disney World. Their 5-day trip started, like most 1,000-mile excursions, with a trip to the airport.

14

Prosper Magazine

April 2016

This helped the students make the connection that time really is money and to prepare them for their recording session. Band 1 recorded music from Tarzan and watched with wonder as their music was put into the movie. Then the students got a laugh as the Prosper directors added their own animal vocals to Tarzan’s “Trashin’ the Camp” while the students played on. The directors' vocals signaled the end of Band 1’s time in the studio, and their time in Disney’s Hollywood Studios to begin. Conversely, it was Band 2’s time to leave the park and go to the clinic. Band 2 was put through much of the same experience, although they recorded music to Disney’s Aladdin and the Prosper directors participated in The Jungle Book’s “I Wanna Be Like You.” After that, everyone was transported back to the hotel to prepare for their march through Magic Kingdom the following day. Day 3 - March Through Magic Kingdom This day at the park started the same as the previous one with the band’s arrival at the park, but this time, the park was Magic Kingdom and their time there would be interrupted by their participation in the Disney parade. After a morning filled with fun and adventure, the band broke out their marching uniforms and accepted their promotion to honorary Disney cast members and leading the Disney characters on their daily trek down Main Street. After what seemed like hours, the band marched into the Magic Kingdom, being greeted by a surprisingly large number of Prosper supporters mixed in with the general public. As The Mighty Eagle Band led the parade, due to sensory overload time passed by so quickly. Soon thereafter, the band students had to relinquish their cast member status; however, they did not leave empty-handed. Disney bestowed upon the band the Golden Mickey Trophy to commemorate their trip and march. Each student also received an exclusive pair of ears to complete their cast member status. And not just any ears, each member was given a set of Disney Performing Arts ears that are not available to the public. The only way to get them is to be one of the lucky bands who gets to march down Main Street. Band members were ushered back through the staging area of Disney, rushed through a “cast-members only” door and released back into the park, with new ears in tow. Those ears, as well as the Magic Kingdom fireworks, signaled the end of the band’s time in Disney.

We look forward to serving you with a mortgage strategy to make your dream of home ownership come true!

Lynn Reed www.lynnreed.net

(972) 483-5495 NMLS #251648

Day 4 - Universal Studios Though the members of the band program were forced to say goodbye to Disney, they were about to say hello to another park, Universal Studios. The band members had free reign of both Universal Studios and Universal Studios Islands of Adventure. From dawn till dusk the students went around the parks exploring attractions ranging from The Wizarding World of Harry Potter to Jurassic Park. When the weary band kids finally saw their way back to their beds, the relief of not being on their feet anymore was bittersweet, for they had to pack for their journey back to Prosper. Day 5 - Coco Beach and Home With all of their Disney and Universal stash safely packed away, the band students were ready to return home, but not before one last round of fun. When the students loaded the busses, it was not to depart for the airport, but to go to Ron Jon's Surf Shop and Coco Beach! For their last hurrah, the band members swam in the blue waters off of Coco Beach, turned each other into sand mermaids, or prowled the aisles of Ron Jon for the perfect pair of sunglasses (aided with a complimentary coupon, courtesy of Advantage Tours). After a barbecue lunch on the beach, it was finally time to head home, so they boarded their planes and departed for Prosper, Texas. While everyone went home with tangible things that night like Mickey ears, magic wands, and Disney pins, the most important things they carried with them were their memories: The memories of the celebration of all that they had accomplished during marching season; proudly remembering all of the days of summer they gave up; all the sleep they had lost, and realizing how those lost things made them better as a group, but most importantly, as individuals.

Bill Hays is the author of 2 books, which document the history of Prosper Texas: Its History and Families, Volumes I and II. To purchase a book, please contact Bill Hays at: Billhays@prodigy.Net or 972-569-9062.

Two short years after the Town of Prosper was founded, The Prosper Times Newspaper was printed. The very first issue was printed on October 7, 1904. It was published by Times Publishing Company, with Chas P. Grafton as the Manager. It was to be printed every Friday and subscription rates began at only $0.05 for a single copy or $1.00 for an entire year subscription! An interesting excerpt from the first issue of the Prosper Times: “In launching the Times upon the Collin County journalistic field we do not expect to out strip all other papers nor revolution the politics or religion of any one. We do hope to print a good local paper devoted to Prosper and vicinity’s every interests. Whether the paper is a success or not devolves upon the cooperation of the people with the editor. It will take all of us to do the work and push Prosper to the front where it belongs.” Included in the first issue was a Frisco Train Station Time Card, which had the daily times of the Mail and Express Trains’ arrivals for both Northbound and Southbound Trains. It also listed the things that Prosper had at the time: The Continental Bank and Trust, with capital of $225,000 A two story Masonic hall A two story brick Odd Fellows hall Three Churches: Methodist, Baptist and Presbyterian A splendid school with 128 pupils One hardware, saddle, harness and buggy store One drug store and two good physicians Five good groceries, another to start soon One livery stable Two gins, square and round bale systems Two elevators and one mill Two blacksmith shops One first class hotel and two good boarding houses One barber shop Splendid wheat and cotton buyers Ginned 1500 bales of cotton up to date Some of the neatest homes in the county Several good carpenters and painters Two good brick building and talk of another to cost $5,000 One good lumber yard One meat market and one restaurant

In His Presence

I love SPRING!

Spring can mean many things. Spring is a season. Spring is a coil in a bed-foundation. Spring is water emerging from the earth. Spring is momentum forward. SPRING is a verb. Although I arrived in Texas as soon as I could, I wasn’t born here. I was born and raised for the first twelve years of my life in a rural community in Southwest Missouri. Winters there could be beautiful but they also could be very brutal. A Southwest Missouri winter is said to be BRUTIFUL. The long months of cold forced me inside, all the while longing for the warmth of the sun to put an end to the dreary days. It was SPRING, in all its glory, that kept my hope alive. It was SPRING that promised me that brighter and warmer days were ahead. The kinder temperatures allowed me to venture outside play my guitar on my front porch swing without frozen fingers. The melting snow revealed a lush lawn…. Which would eventually need frequent mowing… a task I did not protest. Well…. We had a riding lawn mower. Then at the age of 13 our family relocated to North Texas….told you, I got here as soon as I could! The winters here are neither harsh, nor recognizable. Oh, we may have an occasional stretch of cold or winter precipitation, causing cities to literally shut down; however, winter here is nothing like the winters our neighbors to the north experience. Yet, even in the warmer climate of Texas, SPRING remained and still is a staple every single year: in the physical and spiritual rhythm of my life. Texas winters are not necessarily measured by sleet, snow, ice or isolation. They are measured by the absence of GREEN, LIFE and GROWTH. Song of Solomon 2:11-12 11 For, lo, the winter is past, the rain is over and gone; 12 The flowers appear on the earth; the time of the singing of birds is come, and the voice of the turtle is heard in our land; So, “Does our SPRING differ according to the magnitude of our winter?” No matter where we live, what we do, or who we are: SPRING is a verb – and it emerges regardless of our season of dormancy. We may be thick into the winter: with challenges, issues, problems, illness, stress… but SPRING beckons us to a NEW SEASON. Nichole Nordeman’s song, “Every Season”, says, And everything in time and under heaven
 Finally falls asleep.
Wrapped in blankets white, all creation
 Shivers underneath
And still I notice you when branches crack
And in my breath on frosted glass
Even now in death, You open doors for life to enter You are winter And everything that’s new has bravely surfaced
 Teaching us to breathe
And what was frozen through is newly purposed
 Turning all things green
So it is with You and how You make me new
 With every season’s change
And so it will be as You are re-creating me
summer, autumn, winter, SPRING I find this to be among the finest lyrical depictions of Christ’s perpetual, continual, cyclical work in our lives – DEMONSTRATING & DESCRIBING Himself through creation - expressed by seasons. Proving that SPRING is a verb. Rev Brad Wilkerson Lead Pastor | Church of Celebration Metro cocmetro.com 28691 Harper Road | Prosper, TX 469-815-5253

FreeSt yle How To Create New Go-To Pieces + Refresh Your Favorite Staples

28

Prosper Magazine

April 2016

Do you feel like you have nothing to wear, and at the same time, a little ridiculous because your closet is full of clothes? Welcome to Free Style! We’re walking through how to use your current closet to feel more confident, polished, and gorgeous! Last month, we set ourselves up for success by: • Starting a replacement shopping list and adding any pieces that are worn out, stained, etc., then clearing them out! • We also moved the things that don’t fit right now- to another closet, under the bed, or even just an out-of-the-way space in the closet to free up physical and mental space! This month, let’s look at two tricks to create new go-to pieces and refresh our favorite staples. One: Proper fit is the key to looking polished and expensive- even if you’re a thrifty shopper! • Clothing should fit close to your body, but not tight. • As a rule of thumb, pick a garment that fits close to the widest part of the body it covers. If you need to, tailor the piece to fit the rest of your shape. • Tailoring is a great way to transform the pieces that are almost perfect into items you reach for over and over again. Most people have a few categories of pieces they just have to tailor if they want the right fit. For me, it’s almost always pants; I had these black jeans lengthened and taken in at the ankle to have a better fit. Two: Have a perfect pair of jeans? Try dyeing them to keep them looking brand-new. • Jeans are a staple in Texas, and dark wash or black jeans look chic and polished, but can fade to an awkward hue. • Try using in-washer dye to make yours look brand-new! Look for dye in the laundry aisle of a grocery store or the fabric section of a craft store. Just follow the directions on the bottle, and for the first few washes after, be sure to use a color catcher sheet to catch any stray dye, just like you would a brand new pair of jeans! Would one of these strategies give you a ton of “new” outfit options? Take a minute right now to calendar it and knock it out this month!

Coming up, we’ll: • Use the pieces you turn to over and over again to unlock the rest of your closet’s potential; • Take a peek at a few styling tricks that will make you look polished and put together instantly; • And learn how to find the holes in your closet that will make it more versatile plus feel more like you! Caitlin Skidmore is the creator of Greater Than Rubies, where she teaches women how to shop their closets. You can contact her at caitlin@greaterthanrubies.net.
