Prosper Voters to Cast Ballots in June 16th Town Council Runoff Voters in Prosper have some unfinished business at the ballot box as a runoff is scheduled to fill a seat on the Town Council. Eligible citizens will be asked to vote for either Craig Andres or Chris Kern to occupy Place 2 on the Town Council. The incumbent, Kenneth Dugger, opted not to run for reelection after serving on Council since 2007. The winner of the runoff will begin a three-year term once votes are tabulated and certified. The Mayor and all Council members are elected at-large, representing the Town as a whole. Election Day is Saturday, June 16 when polls will be open from 7:00am to 7:00pm. On Election Day, residents of the portion of Prosper in Collin County, specifically Precincts 199, 178, 224, 214, may vote at the Town’s Municipal Chambers, 108 W. Broadway Street, or in any other Collin County polling location. Conversely, residents of the portion of Prosper in Denton County, specifically Precinct 1044, must cast their Election Day ballots at Prosper Fire Station No. 2, 1140 S. Teel Parkway. As in all elections, Early Voting is offered, where voters may cast their ballots at a location of their choice. For example, Collin County residents may vote early at the Collin County Elections Office, 2010 Redbud Blvd., Ste. 102 in McKinney; Allen Municipal Courts Facility, 301 Century Parkway in Allen; Anna City Hall, 111 N. Powell Parkway in Anna; and Prosper Municipal Chambers, 108 W. Broadway in Prosper. Denton County residents may vote early at the Denton County Elections Administration Office, 701 Kimberly Drive in Denton; Flower Mound Police and Court Building, 4150 Kirkpatrick in Flower Mound; Lewisville Municipal Annex, 1197 W. See www.collincountytx.gov/elections or www.votedenton.com for more information. Early Voting occurs at these locations from June 4 to 9 starting at 8:00am, ending at 5:00pm. Additionally, Collin County voters may vote until 7:00pm on June 7. Early Voting on June 11 and 12 occurs from 7:00am to 7:00pm. Voters need not have voted in the General Election to vote in the Runoff Election. During the General Election of May 5, Council member Jason Dixon won reelection, and two Special Purpose Districts were approved by voters. Town Matters
I
By Mayor Ray Smith
t’s hard to believe how fast this year has gone. It seems like it was just yesterday we were ushering in the new year, eager to see how it would play out. And now we’re half way done with 2018. A lot has happened this year so far. Stores and restaurants, businesses and offices, health and banking facilities have all opened their doors in Prosper, and many others have plans for doing so before the end of the year. We attained our three-peat in the ITS TIME TEXAS Community Challenge and opened the amenities at Frontier Park North. And, of course, our Town Hall/Library/Multi-purpose Building has been steadily coming together, forever changing our skyline. And, even though May is in our rearview mirror as we enter the month of June, it’s no coincidence that May and June are the two months when we pay honor to our moms and dads. It’s a universal truth that your mom is your first true teacher. The things we learn from our moms stay with us for a lifetime. I think the most important lesson I learned from my mom was commitment. She always demonstrated an undying commitment to her faith, a strong Christian walk with God. I’ve never seen her smoke, drink, cuss nor ever heard her say anything bad about anyone. I like to tell this story about my mom’s combination of commitment and mental toughness. She participated annually in the three-day, 20-mile per day walk to raise funds for breast cancer research. A few years ago, at age 76, she felt exhausted and dehydrated after the second day, having already gone 40 miles. The nurses put her on an IV and kept a close eye on her while she slept that night on a cot. When she awoke the next morning, she overheard the nurses talking about taking her home. The nurses underestimated my mom’s commitment to the cause and her belief in finishing what she started. While she was pulling out the IV in her arm, and lacing up her tennis shoes, she told the nurses, “There’s one more day to walk 20 miles and I’m going to finish.” She walked out of the tent and finished the race. Seems like she and my dad were equally tough. My dad was a professional football player and was traded from Cleveland to Dallas. In those days, the Cowboys played at the Cotton Bowl. At the end of some games my mom would let me walk down to the railing and my dad would lift me over and let me walk with him to the locker room. After he dressed, I walked with him to the team bus where it seemed everyone wanted his autograph. I didn’t understand why until I was older. To this day, every time I get a whiff of diesel fuel, those memories of standing by the bus come flooding back. Now, as a dad/grandad, my most endearing memory is witnessing all five boys being saved and baptized. When my boys became Christians, it was a tremendous moment. I value being a role model to the boys and my granddaughters. I’m not perfect and when I make a mistake, I hope my kids see me ask God for forgiveness, always get up, dust myself off and move forward.

Senior Week PowderPuff Game
By: Tish Cama
As the school year comes to an end, the 2018 Senior class lives out their last week of high school with celebratory traditions during senior week. On Tuesday, May 22nd, the Seniors made their way over to Eagle Stadium for a fierce competition with the Juniors for the annual PowderPuff game. In traditional PowderPuff fashion, the tables were turned as the ladies played football and the boys coached and acted as the cheerleaders. Seniors Hailey Davidson and Haley Killinger were both successful with running and passing the ball. But not to be outdone, Junior Jordan Oliver was on fire for the Class of 2019, intercepting 2 passes and running to score a touchdown. With the help of some good-natured questionable calls from the referees, the final score came down to 7-6, as the seniors snatched the victory. The referees for the evening consisted of PISD Superintendents Dr. Drew Watkins, Mrs. Holly Ferguson and Dr. Greg Bradley. Behind the scenes the MC for the night was Mr. Keith Kirkland. Kathy Nelms lead the tech crew, which included Quinton Williams, Cooper Harris, Tyler Grinstead and Eric Clark. The halftime entertainment didn’t disappoint as Nathan Ballard and Zach Wachter wowed the fans with a dynamic performance and cheer routine that included the songs “Dancing Queen” and popular favorite, “My Girl.” As the night came to a close, the students, parents and faculty all met at center field as the seniors said one last goodbye to their beloved Eagle Stadium.

Prosper Profile
Helping Prosper Exceed Expectations By Leslie Scott

M
ike Pettis remembers the population sign when he moved to Prosper eleven years ago. He says, “It read just under 5,000 and a lot has sure changed since then.” Many don’t realize that he’s actually someone making some of that change happen. His pride in Texas, and in Prosper, shows through in his personal investment in the community and his sentimental desire to provide his children with a hometown like he had growing up. “I was born in Dallas, lived in Plano until I was ten, grew up in Midland, graduated Midland in 1987, went to Arkansas for a couple of years and then went back to Midland and became a golf pro.” Golf pro seems surprising and Mike explains, “Unless you’re one of the guys on TV, you don’t make a whole lot of money, so I had to wake up and figure out what I was going to do.” Fortunately for Prosper, Mike didn’t take long figuring out his future. Married to his wife Nikki for 22 years, they moved to Prosper for a bigger home lot and good schools. Pride emanates from Mike when he talks about his wife and their three children. Daughter Regan is a sophomore at Oklahoma State and sons Cole and Case are

students at Prosper High School. Mike says, “My family’s background has always been in building, as well as oil and gas. When we moved here, I was building houses in Highland Park. That was a tough time in the economy, so once we built the last house, we came up here and regrouped and decided to start to try to revitalize downtown Prosper. We bought some property here, did some teardown stuff on 3rd street, bought five lots, built on three lots, and then sold the other two. During that process we ended up befriending Teague Griffin and Luke Brown. They approached us about the Cotton Gin and we were really interested in the real estate aspect of it. My cousin Joey Moi is the operating partner. He’s been in the business for 30 some years and it worked out good that he could be the managing partner of the Cotton Gin and we could keep the buildings. It worked out perfect.” Mike’s investment in downtown Prosper didn’t stop with just the Cotton Gin. Mike explains, “After we saw the traffic and the potential
at the Cotton Gin, and we thought the town was big enough, we decided to expand.” Although right beside each other, Mike makes sure to clarify that the Cotton Gin and The Gin are different. Even more so, he makes clear that The Gin isn’t typical, nor does he want it to be. He says, “We are more than just a bar. I wanted something that was very rustic yet contemporary where people could come and have a good time building memories. I’m big into music, so we added the stage in the back for that. We have unbelievable wood fire pizza. I just wanted to start bringing the atmosphere downtown. I think there’s something nostalgic about downtown Prosper. I want to maintain the Cotton Gin and The Gin and better this product as we go, and make sure what we do here is more of an upscale good time; we’re evolving.” When asked if he thought Prosper would grow like it has he replies, “I think it’s blown everyone’s expectations out of the water. I knew it was going to grow, but I had no idea it would grow this quickly at this magnitude. And I don’t think we are anywhere close to being done or halfway there. I like the growth, with that obviously comes traffic and infrastructure and all that, but that’s all part of change and results in more people coming in to find out what’s so great about Prosper.” Mike says he likes to, “play a little bit of golf, watch my freshman play baseball, and spend as much time with my wife as I can. We are slowly but surely starting to travel more because that’s what we like to do.” However, Mike has other passions, one of which is Sons of the Flag. Mike explains, “Sons of the Flag raises money for burn victims and survivors, not just military, but also first responders and civilians. We’re trying to figure out a better way, if God forbid, someone gets burned, how the scarring can be minimalized. So what we’ve done over time is assembled a team of doctors in St. Pete/ Tampa. Our first two individuals are going down there soon, all the doctors are there at once. All the surgeons are all there at once, and with this new technology, they are able to walk away and not have to worry about more surgeries. And if they do, they are minimal. Right now we have a gentleman, Omar Avila, who is the face of our foundation. He’s had over 100 surgeries, lost part of his leg, and he could still have over 100 more because of the issues with the burn and the scarring. So this process, hopefully, will absolutely change the way burn injuries are treated.” His involvement with Sons of the Flag was purely circumstantial and kind hearted. His son’s assistant coach told him he should get involved with the group. Mike adds, “The gentleman that started it, Ryan “Birdman” Parrot, is a SEAL Team 7 sniper. Ryan met Sam Brown from the navy, who was burned head to toe and Sam said this is about as good as it gets, and Ryan said no it’s not. It was from there that he went on to start Sons of the Flag. Since then, what we’ve been able to do here in Prosper, knowing Ryan and then my love for music, is we started doing a big annual concert five years ago at 3R’s Ranch. We’ve raised $450,000 in three years. I didn’t have the guts to be a soldier, so I figured the least I can do is start giving back.” Mike gives a lot more than he takes credit for both locally and for others outside of Prosper and Texas. And Mike’s pride and love for Prosper has been reciprocated in that Prosper has lived up to the very hopes that he had for it when their family moved here. Mike says, “This town is exactly what I wanted to give my kids and it exceeded expectations. We will always have a home here regardless of what our future holds. This is exactly how I grew up and wanted my kids to grow up. I’ve even been threatened by my daughter never to leave.” For Prosper’s sake, we hope he never does.

Prosper High School Golf A Legacy of Success Varsity I Boy’s Accomplishments Cameron Merryman- 3rd at Denton Ryan Invitational
The Prosper High School Golf teams had great success this year and continued the winning streak that has won them the title of District Champions for the past eleven years. Prosper’s teams have been Region Champions four different times and Region qualifiers for the past 11 years. They have also had a State Championship team and State qualifiers for the past 11 years. Their legacy no doubt leaves much to be proud of and much to celebrate. The teams hope to carry the momentum from this season’s successes into their new 6A district next year. There’s no question that their success will carry on, but after the 2018 senior class graduates, the teams will be without 6 key players that will be moving onward and upward in their golf and scholastic careers. Both teams graduate 3 seniors: Cole Lantz, Josh Knight and Jake Hughes on the boys’ team. Senior Cole Lantz has been on the Varsity team for four years and says, “Prosper Golf has given me many memorable years. I’ve gained great friends and many experiences that I will never forget.” Seniors, Caroline Weatherly, Carlee Tinsley and Cassidy McAlpine will be graduating after having left their mark on the girls’ team. Senior Caroline Weatherly says, “I’ve enjoyed being able to transition from volleyball to golf with my favorite coach.” All High School sports teams lose seniors each year, leaving underclassmen with big shoes to fill. Although it is often difficult to say goodbye to athletes that made such an impact and leave such a legacy, the good news is that legacy lives on in the students that come after them. With another school year and golf season in the history books, the Prosper community and fans are so proud of our Prosper Eagle Golf Teams for their group efforts, as well as their individual accomplishments. Good Luck to the graduating seniors in all of your future endeavors and good luck to the up and coming Eagles that we know will leave their own legacy as well.

Celebrating and Protecting the Life Long Love of Pets By Jodie Brownd
There is a lot going on at Vital Pet, aka Windmill Veterinary Center in Prosper, Texas. Dr. Robinson, the veterinarian there has always been curious about animals. His best friend growing up was the son of a veterinarian who kept the boys very busy as they worked for him at his office after school and during the summer months. He laughs, but also takes pride in having started from ground zero, learning about the ins and out of veterinarian life by cleaning out dirty pens. There isn't an aspect of the business he hasn't dealt with on some level. He genuinely enjoys the animals and has a soft place in his heart for all creatures saying, "All animals require and ask is for us to love them." Dr. Robinson obtained his undergraduate degree from Texas A&M University before he attended Royal Veterinary College in London, where he lived for 5 years. When asked what the most unusual question he's been asked about a pet, he tells the story of a pet gold fish whose humans inquired about euthanasia for their beloved friend. There really isn't a silly question to be asked and his friendly and easy-going demeanor makes you feel comfortable whether you are a with or without a patient. Dr. Robinson specializes in treating pocket pets. Once when a client brought their hedgehog in with a broken leg, sadly, they felt they had no choice but to say goodbye to the animal. Dr. Robinson took the tiny friend under his wing and made a cast for the hedgehog’s leg as he couldn't justify letting the animal go for merely having a broken leg. The hedgehog healed nicely and enjoyed many more years of life. That story, along with his memories of working with a blind sugar glider, are just two of many cases that prove his devotion to animals big and small.

Cassy Valle, Area Team Lead for all Vital Pet locations in North Texas has an extensive background in serving four legged friends. She says that every day is an adventure and that she originally wanted to work with animals because ironically, she has a passion for helping people. Most of the care given in a veterinary office is to the "human parents" bringing their pets in for consultation. The most difficult times are when people have to say goodbye to their pets for health reasons. People are usually there because of the excitement of getting a new pet, or the sadness of having to let go. Cassy has even led grief support groups for people struggling with their losses. She understands that loss on a deeper level having lost a dear friend of many years, a Weimaraner named Boo. It cannot be denied that there are many great reasons to visit Windmill Veterinary Center. They offer Doggie Daycare and Day Camp where dogs can play with other dogs and get a fun work out on the customized activity and agility equipment. Christina, the onsite groomer is well known for making her furry friends comfortable while they get a bath, pedicure or new haircut. She is very patient with her clients and only takes four appointments per day so that she can give each animal the specific attention they deserve. Dr. Robinson and Cassy understand that your pets are not only your pets, but they are family members. And with the growth in our area, there is also a growing need for services for pets of all species whether cats, dogs, or pocket pets. VitalPet hospitals, and Windmill in particular, live by the mission of “Celebrating and Protecting the Life Long Love of Pets.’ VitalPet is a vital part of our community of pet owners and furry
family members. Vital Pet has pet hospitals all over the nation, with several locations in the Dallas Metroplex, including locations in Frisco, Denton and Irving. Ours here in Prosper is at 833 N Preston Road. Whether you need boarding, grooming, social activities or medical care for your pet, the care givers at Windmill Veterinary center will go out of their way for all animals and their humans, no matter what your pets needs may be.

GROWING Prosper
with Jimmie Gibson Jr.
Natu ra l Mosqu ito Repel lents I am generally not a big fan of chemical products that harm our environment and avoid using toxic chemical insect repellents whenever possible. However, my profession requires me to be outside around client’s residences and my solution has been to wear what I called my ‘DEET sheet’…an old cotton sheet that had been sprayed with S.C. Johnson’s Off! Deep Woods formula. While this was highly effective, it wasn’t practical for use around kids and some clients, so I did some research into safer, natural mosquito repellents. I learned that many so-called natural mosquito repellents don’t repel mosquitoes, but some are backed by reputable research and really do work.
moist plants or mud puddles) will draw mosquitoes. Standing water also allows mosquitoes to reproduce.
Mosquitoes have complex methods of detecting hosts and different types of mosquitoes react to different stimuli. Most mosquitoes are active at dawn and dusk, but there are also mosquitoes that seek hosts during the day. You can avoid being bitten by making sure you aren’t attracting mosquitoes, using attractants to lure mosquitoes elsewhere, using repellent and avoiding actions that diminish the effectiveness of the repellent.
•Citronella Oil
•Lemon Eucalyptus Oil
•Cinnamon Oil
•Castor Oil
•Rosemary Oil
•Lemongrass Oil
•Cedar Oil
•Peppermint Oil
•Clove Oil
•Geranium Oil
•Possibly Oils from Verbena, Pennyroyal, Lavender, Pine, Cajeput, Basil, Thyme, Allspice, Soybean, and Garlic
Mosquito Attractants Use this list of items and activities that attract mosquitoes as a list of things to avoid or that can be used as bait to lure mosquitoes away from you. •Dark Clothing: Many mosquitoes use vision to locate hosts from a distance. Dark clothes and foliage are initial attractants. •Carbon Dioxide: You give off more carbon dioxide when you are hot or have been exercising. A burning candle or other fire is another source of carbon dioxide. •Lactic Acid: You release more lactic acid when you have been exercising or after eating certain foods (e.g., salty foods, high-potassium foods). •Floral or Fruity Fragrances: In addition to perfumes, hair products, and scented sunscreens, watch for the subtle floral fragrance from fabric softeners and dryer sheets. •Skin Temperature: The exact temperature depends on the type of mosquito. Many mosquitoes are attracted to the slightly cooler temperatures of the extremities. •Moisture: Mosquitoes are attracted by perspiration because of the chemicals it contains and also because it increases the humidity around your body. Even small amounts of water (e.g.,

Natural Repellents These natural products will effectively repel mosquitoes, but they require more frequent reapplication (at least every 2 hours) and higher concentrations than DEET. Because of the differences between types of mosquitoes, products that contain multiple repellents tend to be more effective than those containing a single ingredient. As you can see, natural repellents tend to be volatile plant oils.
Things that Lower Repellent Effectiveness
•Many Sunscreens
•Dilution from Rain, Perspiration, or Swimming
•Absorption into the Skin
•Evaporation from Wind or High Temperatures
Keep in mind that ‘natural’ does not automatically imply ‘safe’. Many people are sensitive to plant oils. Some natural insect repellents are actually toxic. Therefore, although natural repellents provide an alternative to synthetic chemicals, please remember to follow the manufacturer’s instructions when using these products.
Question: Jimmie, my Hydrangea plant seems healthy but has only put out one bloom in the last 2 years? Do I need a second plant to make it flower?? Thank you for your time, Amy, C in Prosper. Answer: Hi Amy! You do not need a second plant to make a Hydrangea flower. However, after blooming you can cut it back. This fall after it defoliates add 1 tablespoon of Epsom salt to one gallon of water or I cup of Vinegar to a gallon of water and pour around the base of the plant. Repeat this next spring when it’s starting to leaf out. That generally works for us.

Until next time…Happy Gardening!! Question: Jimmie, I have a Bald cypress tree that I absolutely love! It reminds me of my childhood days growing up at my parents’ house near Baton Rouge, Louisiana. I had the builder install those trees rather than what everyone else in my neighborhood has for that reason. I have no idea why they seem to struggle so much! They always seem dry, they lose all their leaves before all the other trees do and they have not grown much. Do these trees not do well here? Should I have been like everyone else and just settled for whatever it is the builder put in around the area? I really want to be a good tree parent!! Marcia W. in Prosper Answer: Hi Marcia! The Bald Cypress tree is for sure a species of Beauty! I understand those childhood memories that instantly make you smile! However, there is a reason they do so well where your parents’ house is. Bald Cypress trees require TONS of water!! I can almost bet you guys lived near a water source where the trees were growing! Here in Texas, you see them only really doing well at the edges of lakes, ponds etc. They absolutely love wet feet!! If they are planted in your front yard in a regular neighborhood, you will have trouble getting enough water to them year-round without drowning your grass. Again, I love the tree, but only in its correct habitat. You will probably be better off long term with a more native tree selection like an Oak or Elm variety. Feel free to contact me if you need more specific suggestions. Happy Gardening! PROSPER LACROSSE TAKES THE BALL By Tish Cama

ne more. One more shot, one more practice, one more win, one more victory. The motto “One More” is what has driven the Prosper Lacrosse team throughout their season and into a #1 state ranking, district and division championships, a 16-game winning streak during their season, undefeated record in district play and a change of culture for this team which has taken their success to a whole new level. This year, Prosper Lacrosse has created a new name for itself and has gained the respect of the Lacrosse league and the community. This year’s team adopted in a new head coach, John Marano. Marano has been coaching in Texas since 1992, traveling from Greenville, Coppell, Plano West and St. Marks. Growing up in Long Island, Lacrosse was in his blood and he was willing to put in whatever it took to put these boys on top. When first taking over the program, Marano paired the team up with 3 extremely challenging opponents located anywhere from Dallas to Houston. The boys lost these three pre-district pair-ups and began questioning their season’s outcome. From the coach’s perspective, that was exactly what was necessary to make adjustments and focus on the
team’s strengths and weaknesses. After those three games, the team went into a 16-game winning streak and was unstoppable. They made it all the way to the state tournament, falling just short against Highland Park 10-7, after previously beating them 15-8.
24 | June 2018 WeAreProsper.com
Coach Marano states, “I think this was a year of firsts. I am proud that the boys made it there, it is extremely difficult to make it there, but this is their first time making it that far and hopefully far from their last. Now they know how difficult their goal is, but they are willing to put in the work and will be unstoppable.” The team is 27 strong. It is a phrase they have adopted as a family including 24 players and 3 coaches. Senior captain Cole Wyles says, “The team’s chemistry is a huge part of our games. There were a couple of games where we were selfish. We didn’t play for each other or stick to the game plan and we almost lost it all. Conversely, when we played as a team and played disciplined Prosper Lacrosse, we were able to do some amazing things as a family.” As the team went through their season they began to realize how their game and attitude link hand in hand. The reward of the game doesn’t just amount to the number of wins, but to the new foundation they are building for each other. “The most rewarding part is seeing this team become a family and
how I grew to love every single player and all of the coaches,” Wyles said. With every new family comes new traditions, and that is how the boys began bringing out the belt. Coach Marano helped create a culture for the players to buy into and put their team first. He bought an MMA wrestling belt with a “PEagle” engraved on the front and would use this belt to recognize an MVP for every game.

“The belt was a challenge to leave a legacy,” Marano said. The MVP of the game would have his name engraved onto the belt and then lead the entire team onto the field, placing the belt on the 45-yard line facing and staring down their opposing team. This small new tradition made a huge impact on the boys’ field performance as well as their pre-game pump up as their prepared to play for one another.

As a parting gift for the year, everyone received a wooden shaft from a lacrosse stick with the words “Prosper Lacrosse 27 Strong” engraved on it. Coach Marano said, “The advice I give my seniors is that this is it. When it ends, it’s over. This is your time, your year, don’t waste it saying I could have or I would have. This will be the last organized sport that you do and when you have a team that should win a state championship you will appreciate it. You guys have accomplished something that a lot of kids can never do. The road to the D2 state championship goes through Prosper, and you have all earned that right and respect. You will be the first in Prosper history to leave that legacy. Be proud and always stand together.” Senior Cole Wyles left advice for the underclassmen stating, “Stay focused on the task at hand. Prosper Lacrosse has some huge goals for this season and will only grow. It is important to be in the moment and make the best of everyday. Whether it is a game, a practice, or you just playing wall ball. Make the most of it, stay focused, and strive to be better every single day.”
