S
pring has sprung! Things are greening up nicely and the birds are singing. After being indoors so much this winter, it’s time to get out and enjoy the sunshine and the longer days! There is plenty of time to enjoy the warmer weather with Spring Break just around the corner. Whether you are planning an elaborate family vacation or looking forward to a relaxing staycation at home, we hope that you are able to enjoy some quality family time before the busy end of the school year season begins. Once we return from break, it seems as though it is non-stop, back-to-back activities leading all the way up to graduation! While you’re out enjoying the sunshine this month, don’t forget to register for the “It’s Time Texas” challenge…Prosper is in the lead, and we need to continue to register, snap selfies and record all of our healthy habits. There are so many beautiful areas to get out and take a walk, a run or ride a bike. Let’s win this contest and put Prosper on the map for not only being the best place to live and having the best school district…let’s show the rest of the state that we are committed to healthy living too! We have lots of fun things to look forward to over the next few weeks…the biggest announcement of which is the opening of the new Kroger at Preston Road and Prosper Trail! They are preparing for their Grand Opening on March 25th, and we know that everyone is anxiously awaiting the opportunity to grocery shop in our very own town. We’ll see you in the fresh food section…don’t forget to snap a selfie for the challenge!!

Community
By Haley Birmingham
Relay for Life is held on April 15, 2016 at the Prosper High School practice field. This event is an opportunity to honor those who had cancer, to memorialize those who have passed away from cancer and to advocate for the American Cancer Society organization. Relay for Life is an annual event organized by high schools, universities or communities. “Four years ago, Cassie Pilawski, a student at that time, came to me wanting to do a Relay. She took control, organizing and raising over $6,000 that first year, ” student council advisor Mrs. Jan Brown said, “Now we are aiming for $35,000!” The following year, student council began the tradition for the Relay for Life event. “Leading up to this year, Relay has been centered around students and the high school, but I want the community and their families to be able to get involved in the event,” student council President Maddy Ray said, “First and foremost, our main concern is to raise the most money for the Cancer Society, and then to make sure Relay is a fun, family-friendly environment people look forward to year after year.” The event will include: food trucks, bounce houses, super trampoline and a live entertainer.
12
PROSPER Magazine
“We are going to keep the tradition alive, but take it up a notch,” entertainment chairman Hannah Crawford said. “Relay gets better every single year. We put in a lot of effort in order to make sure the community enjoys it, so we hope to see everyone out there.” Fundraising is a key aspect of the event and the high school is nearly halfway to the thirty-five thousand dollar goal. “Luminaires are an amazing way to honor cancer survivors and to remember those who lost their battle,” Luminaries Chairman Haley Tinebra said. “It’s one of the biggest parts of the event where at the end of the night we do a survivor lap. We turn off all the lights and the luminaries light up the entire track as the survivors make their lap. It’s for the survivors and it's an opportunity to honor anyone who has had cancer. It’s a symbolic thing more than anything.” Luminaires can be purchased for a minimum donation amount of ten dollars to as much as fifty dollars. Prosper High School Student Council hopes the community will get involved in this year’s event and hopes to fulfill the American Cancer Society’s mission statement: “The hope that those lost to cancer will never be forgotten, that those who face cancer will be supported, and that one day cancer will be eliminated.” March 2016

Spotlight
Building a true custom home is not just our business, but our mission.
Welcome Home!
Spotlight
Dave R. Williams has announced changes in the management team at his Prosper-based home building company along with the opening of their new model home in the gated, estate-lot community of Christie Farms. In addition, the company has announced it will begin development of the Christie Farms Phase Two home sites in March. Williams also announced formation of the Dave R. Williams Homes Scholarship Foundation, an organization dedicated to identifying and awarding scholarships to area students who have overcome adversity. Gary Castleberry has been appointed to the position of Vice President and General Manager of the firm. “Gary has been with us for more than a decade and his dedication to his job, our customers, his family, and the community has been most impressive,” Williams said. “His performance in his job and his ‘cando’ attitude has not only impressed me, but, more importantly, has impressed our clients.” Castleberry has served as a Construction Manager in the past and has been named twice by Prosper Code Enforcement officials as the town’s ‘Builder of the Year’. “I trust Gary to carry out our core philosophy of quality and fair-dealing,” said Williams. “It is important to have managers who share your values and Gary has demonstrated time and again he will do the right thing at the right time.” Eldon Carter has been promoted from Assistant Construction Manager to Construction Manager and Mike Kleber has joined the firm as a Construction Manager. “For years, Eldon has been on our job sites doing finish up and quality

control work. He has served recently as Gary’s assistant and will now assume responsibility for construction activities on half of the company’s projects,” said Williams. Kleber comes to the company as a former owner of his own firm. “Mike has been my friend and friendly competitor for years, and I am excited to have him bring his talents to our company. I have always admired Mike for his construction knowledge and the quality of the homes he has built over the years,” said Williams. Williams will continue in his role with the company, utilizing his more than 40 years of experience in the residential construction industry in North Texas. “I enjoy my role in guiding what and where we build. I am also involved with each client as they develop their custom floor plans. Our philosophy is every client should know the face that goes along with the name on the sign,” Williams said. “In this environment of nameless and faceless companies claiming to build custom homes, our company stands alone in the way we approach our projects, the way we service our clients, the way we partner with our long-time subcontractors and suppliers, and our reputation for fair dealing.” Other members of the firm include Mark Sena, Sales Manager, Marcelle Johnson, Marketing Manager, Patty DiVeronica, Operations Manager, Cathy Watters, Project Coordinator, and Cheryl Grant, Interior Designer. “The most satisfaction I get is when a client will compliment a member of our staff. It is my barometer of how we are doing, and I get those compliments almost daily. I am very proud of the people who make up this firm,” said Williams. The new model home location is at 4240 San Juan Avenue in Christie March 2016
Farms. “We wanted a model home that represented trends in color and design along with our one-level living with large outdoor living areas, huge garages, and signature engineered walk-up basements. Our philosophy is to build models representative of our standard specifications,” said Williams. “Most builders like to build models with lots of upgrades and disguise their product with elaborate decorating. We are not selling furniture. We are selling homes, and I want our potential clients to judge us on construction - not lipstick. I find most home builders to be very slick marketing operations who happen to build homes. At our core, we are a construction company who does a very good job marketing our product.” The company also said it has reached agreement with Custer Road Equity Group, LP to develop 18 additional acreage lots in Phase Two of Christie Farms. “We will market these home sites in May of this year, and I am truly excited about this tract. I believe it is the most desirable location in all of Prosper for estate home sites,” said Williams. “In conjunction with the development of Phase Two, we will be upgrading the entrance way signage and landscaping to prepare for the summer season.” The company builds custom and speculative homes, primarily in northern Collin County. “Prospective clients believe that we only build in our established neighborhoods, but they are surprised when we tell them that 30 percent of our projects are on properties outside of those neighborhoods.” said Williams. “We will build on your lot or property.” Currently, the company is building four homes for clients they have built for in the past. “I can think of no greater compliment or testimonial for a home builder than repeat business,” said Williams. “It speaks volumes for our relationship building, longevity, and integrity-before- profit culture.” Dave R. Williams Homes also offers architectural design work as part of their process. “We hear constantly that builders require clients to invest in large architectural fees before they get a quote on their home,” said Williams. “We can design and price a custom home in less than two weeks for a design fee of less than $3,000.” The Dave R. Williams Scholarship Foundation will be established this year. The company is committing $20,000 to assist Prosper High School graduates through partnerships with established organizations like the Prosper Ladies Association, the Prosper Rotary Club, and the Cory Ausenbaugh Memorial Scholarship. Williams has supported all of these organizations in the past, but wanted to establish a fund using the experience he gained as a board member and President of the Hendrick Scholarship Foundation. The Hendrick Scholarship Foundation was established to honor the former Superintendent of the Plano Independent School District, Dr. H. Wayne Hendrick upon his retirement. The mission of the foundation is to identify, fund, and mentor students who have fought adversities in their lives and managed to graduate from high school. “One of the greatest thrills of my life was being asked to serve as President of the foundation established for Dr. Hendrick by the Haggard family and other community
leaders in Plano,” said Williams. “I learned so much about the true need for an organization that looks beyond grades and focuses on giving an opportunity to a student who has overcome true adversity and managed to persevere and graduate.” Williams said that he plans to work with the local organizations to expand their scholarships and school district teachers and counselors to help identify those students needing and deserving an opportunity. “I want to see a kid who has battled neglect, homelessness, alcoholism, poverty, or abuse and has the grit to make it through the maze without any support. I want to give that kid the chance and the support to continue an education that may change a family for generations to come,” said Williams. One of the philosophies of the Hendrick Scholarship Foundation is to not only fund a student, but provide a mentor to help the recipient navigate through a complicated post-secondary education. “These kids have been abused and neglected. To give them a check and say ‘good luck’ is not realistic. We need to recruit mentors within the community who will commit to helping our students register, schedule, and keep up with their requirements entering college,” said Williams. “We found that student with effective mentors had a much better success rate and mentors got great satisfaction knowing that they have helped a young person gain the knowledge and skills necessary to be successful and self-supporting.” Williams hopes to expand the foundation to reach students in Prosper and Celina. He hopes the fund will grow with contributions from people in those communities who are looking to contribute to a cause where their funds are being well spent. “As President of the Hendrick Foundation, one of my main focuses was assuring donors that we were good stewards of their funds,” said Williams. “The mentor program also allows us to monitor the student and determine whether to continue the funding of their education on a continuing basis.” For further information on Dave R. Williams Homes, visit their web site at www. drwhomes.com or call Mark Sena at (214) 906-8361 or email at marks@drwhomes. com. The company’s phone number is (972) 346-2015. For further information on the scholarship foundation, email Marcelle Johnson at marcellej@drwhomes.com.

Town Matters
T wn Matters From the Mayor’s Desk
By Mayor Ray Smith
I want to win! That should come as no surprise to anyone who knows me. Calling me competitive is like saying the sun will rise in the morning. Most of all, though, I want Prosper to win. We have a chance to add another state championship for our Town in an area that can have positive longterm effects on all of us. Texas grocery chain HEB, which many of you are familiar with, is presenting the “IT’S TIME TEXAS Community Challenge” to communities across the state. The idea is to motivate Texas residents to get serious about their health, exercise and good nutrition. It’s all done online at www.ittcommunitychallenge.com. The state’s communities are divided into several categories by size and are awarded points for practicing healthy habits and keeping score online. The winning community in each category receives a $1,200 grant for school health initiatives, a trophy and a banner. I’ve registered on the official website with the Mayor’s Pledge and automatically scored points. Companies, residents, and community and faith-based organizations in Prosper can do the same thing. Registering and adding evidence of good health habits can add to Prosper’s point total. Already many church leaders in Prosper have taken the pledge and posted photos. Schools can also get in on the action, posting selfies of themselves exercising, eating right and demonstrating an active lifestyle. Schools can have an even bigger impact. Principals, teachers, students and PTAs can earn points
18
PROSPER Magazine
just by signing up, downloading the “Teach Healthier” app and encouraging each other by posting their photos on the ITT Community Challenge website. It’s easy and fun. Log on to the Challenge website and register. It takes just a minute and earns 50 points! Make sure to let them know that I referred you. From there, you can continue to log activity for yourself and your affiliates to rack up those points! Then, take your smart phone with you as you walk, jog, run, bike, play and document your activity by taking a “Healthy Selfie.” (If you need help with the selfie, ask the nearest teenager.) Do something every day, and update your ITT account as often as necessary. Every time you do, our total rises. Start now and continue to add updates daily until midnight, March 31. If we wait, we may miss the objective: to work as a community to bring home to Prosper another state championship. Do it now, while you’re thinking about it. Get on the website, register yourself and ask your friends and relatives to do so also. Then, throughout the rest of the month, post selfies of yourself eating fruits and vegetables, playing tennis or golf, walking the dog or anything else that gets you off the couch and on your feet. You can even keep track of your weight loss program. If you lose weight, report it on your account. Prosper gets valuable points every time someone updates an account. Remember, this is a win or lose competition. There are no participation trophies. I want to win the state championship! March 2016

Profile
“Manners are alive and well in our youth,” says Laura Walsh, Director of the National League of Junior Cotillions Allen, McKinney ad Prosper Chapters. The Allen Chapter will be in its third year of the Junior Cotillion program, while the McKinney and Prosper Chapters will be going into their second year of the Junior Cotillion program. The National League of Junior Cotillions was established in North Carolina in 1978. Ten years later, Charles Winters and his late wife, Anne, expanded the program to a national organization. Today there are thousands of students learning etiquette, ethics and dance in 38 states. The Junior Cotillion program is designed for 6th-8th grade students. It is a comprehensive, three-year program with students registering for one year at a time. Through their participation, students develop life-long social skills. The curriculum focuses on character education, dining etiquette, ballroom dance and modern manners. Students receive instruction in greeting one another, proper introductions, shaking hands, paying and receiving compliments, correspondence/thank you notes, party courtesies, receiving lines, technology and phone etiquette and transportation etiquette (to name a few). Ballroom dance instruction includes learning the Foxtrot, Waltz, East Coast Swing, Salsa and Rhumba. Students also learn several line dances. Our mission is to learn to treat others with honor, dignity and respect for better relationships with family, friends and associates. The mission statement is at the core of our curriculum and guides us through all of our classes and dances. The Junior Cotillion season begins in September and runs through March. The program meets once a month on a Sunday afternoon for 90 minutes (with the exception of the Grand Spring Ball which is 2 hours in length). Meeting monthly allows for greater retention

PROSPER Magazine
of material learned and allows students an opportunity to practice and to put into place what they have learned in class. Each student receives an Instructional Booklet containing the curriculum covered in class. Students receive “Cotillion Challenge” assignments that are not required but are encouraged. They have an opportunity to go home and practice in the home what we have learned (i.e. setting the table, properly seating a lady, writing a thank you note and proper introductions to name a few). Prizes are awarded to selected students for completion of their assignments. Parents appreciate these Cotillion Challenge Assignments, as they are provided with a glimpse into what their child is learning in class and allows them to watch their child develop and mature. “As an educator, I am passionate about having the opportunity to make a positive impact on the development of a student’s character,” says Laura Walsh. Students understand it’s a privilege for them to have the opportunity to participate in the Junior Cotillion program. They are obtaining lifelong social skills impacting their leadership opportunities, personal relationships and future career opportunities. Students can begin putting those skills in place immediately. They have an opportunity to stand out amongst their peers as individuals who know to show respect to others and to exemplify good character. Through their participation in the Junior Cotillion program, the confidence and self-esteem gained by participants is immediately apparent. The program provides a non-threatening, safe environment for participants to roleplay social skills such as holding doors for a lady, introducing themselves, properly seating a lady, etc. Through ballroom dance, students learn appropriate boundaries. The middle school years are known to be a socially awkward age, not because others perceive the students that way, but because that’s how students perceive themselves. The Junior Cotillion program allows students to become comfortable with what might otherwise seem extremely uncomfortable without the exposure and practice. The awkwardness and trepidation they March 2016
might have felt going into the program, quickly fades away. After the first class, students are confidently entering the ballroom and introducing themselves, properly shaking hands, role playing social skills, properly going through a refreshment line and standing in a proper dance frame and dancing. It’s a wonderful thing to see the students enjoying themselves, paying compliments to each other and learning to interact with others in a way they otherwise would not have the opportunity to do so. There are 7 events for the Junior Cotillion season which include 5 Classes, a formal Instructional Dinner in December and a Grand Spring Ball in March. Students love the dinner, and it’s a highlight of the season. It is a formal tutorial where students are seated and walked through all aspects of their meal, from properly seating a lady, placing their napkin in their lap, all the way to the after-dinner mints. The culmination of the season is the Grand Spring Ball hosted in March. The event is semi-formal with ladies wearing a white gown and gloves and gentlemen wearing a tuxedo or dark suit. The students are excited to put into play everything they have learned for the entire season. Special dance contests are held with prizes and awards to winners. Parents are invited to attend the final 30 minutes of the ball to observe student dancing, contests, award ceremonies and to enjoy the final few dances with their child. Ladies receive a wrist corsage and gentlemen receive a boutonniere. Invitation packets will be mailed to eligible Junior Cotillion students in mid-March for the upcoming 2016-2017 Junior Cotillion season. A Parents’ Reception will be hosted on Thursday, March 31st at 7:00 p.m. at Stonebridge Ranch Country Club. Parents are invited to attend and familiarize themselves with the program. The Parents’ Reception will kick off registration for the upcoming 2016-2017 season. The invitation process for the National League of Junior Cotillions is not meant to be exclusive. If a parent has an eligible child interested in participating, their child is more than welcome to join. A Pre-Cotillion program will be added this year for the Allen, McKinney and Prosper Chapters. The Pre-Cotillion program setting will encourage children to be comfortable together, to make new friends, and enjoy themselves. Through role-playing, hands-on experience and storytelling in a peer group, young ladies and gentlemen are expected to leave the program with the beginnings of confidence and poise that come from knowing the proper things to do. Pre-Cotillion I will be offered for first and second grade students while Pre-Cotillion II will be offered for third and fourth grade students. Classes will be hosted in June at Stonebridge Ranch Country Club. Registration for the Pre-Cotillion program will open on March 15th. Please contact Director Laura Walsh at laura.walsh@nljc.com for additional information. www.nljcallenmckinneyprosper.com Testimonial: “As a mother of three boys, I want to equip our sons with the knowledge of how to conduct themselves in any setting. NLJC is an empowering life-tool. It has given our oldest son, Jacob, the opportunity to learn how to handle himself in many social situations he probably won’t encounter for a few years. It gives him exposure to them now, so that when the time comes, he is comfortable and confident. Mrs. Walsh is a very warm and poised individual. Her love for the curriculum and students is apparent in how she conducts herself and interacts with the them. Many times the same lessons we are teaching our children at home, are heard differently when taught by someone else. Jacob comes home after every class excited about what he has learned and is eager to share it with us. His enthusiasm has been so contagious that his younger brothers are already looking forward to participating!” – JJ Mercer, Prosper resident

Elevate Your Easter Brunch If you’ll be hosting friends and family to honor Easter this year, make your gathering as simple as it is scrumptious with a decadent brunch menu. If you’re daunted by the diversity of dishes a brunch menu demands, remember that quality ingredients – not complex preparation – is what makes dishes truly stand out. Fresh produce and superior products instantly elevate a recipe from good to great. Made-to-order omelets are always a hit because they guarantee you’re serving up exactly what your guests enjoy. Use a few winning ingredients to create an easy and quick omelet base, then offer an array of toppings, including unexpected flavors such as Jarlsberg Brand Cheese. Best known for its classic wedge, this nutty, mild cheese is also available in slices – perfect for the ooey-gooey factor everyone loves in an omelet. A classic French quiche combines fresh and flavorful ingredients, is easy to make and tastes delicious hot or cold. The quiche is simple enough to make that you can prepare several varieties, giving guests plenty of options and handily filling a buffet spread. Simply prepare your crust and filling base then mix in fresh, crisp veggies that are steamed or lightly browned. Or create a savory, meaty quiche with your favorite sausage or bacon. Add some cheese before filling the crust and sprinkle some more cheese on top before baking. Finger foods bursting with flavor simply make brunch better. This recipe uses ready-rolled puff pastry sheets, rosemary and the distinctive taste of Jarlsberg Brand Cheese for a mouthwatering dish that can be featured at a tasting station or as part of a larger meal. Find more recipes for your Easter brunch at jarlsberg.com.

Omelet: 8 eggs 8 tablespoons water or milk salt and pepper to taste 2 tablespoons butter 8 slices Jarlsberg Cheese 8 slices ham Prepare toppings. Fry mushrooms and chorizo, bacon or ham; cut cherry tomatoes and spring onions. To make omelet, crack eggs in bowl and add water, salt and pepper. Whisk eggs until they turn a pale yellow color, about 25-35 whisks. Heat frying pan on medium heat and melt butter. When butter is bubbly, add about one quarter of the egg batter. This will make one of four omelets. When batter starts setting, move hardened parts toward the middle, enabling the rest to get direct heat as well. Use a gentle hand to avoid scrambled eggs. When batter starts to look cooked, add cheese and meat and flip omelet over. The omelet should be slightly golden on fried side and a little runny and soft in the middle. Finally, put omelet on plate and add garnish before serving.
Puff Pastry Swirls

Roll up each pastry rectangle from short end. Press edges firmly together to seal roll. Slice each roll into 2-inch thick slices. Place face down on baking sheet and bake for 15-20 minutes. Eagles Nest
A Perfect Game
By Misty Simons
O
n October 10, 2015, Coach Mickie Tate took 4 Lady Eagle Bowlers to participate in their first of many tournaments this season‌ all in preparation for the 2016 Texas State Championship. Ally Campbell, Kennedi Laughlin, DaiMone Lewis and Kyla Simons traveled to Georgetown that morning and came head-to-head with several teams they saw just a few months prior at State. While the ladies may not have won the tournament, they did clinch the 3rd place spot, which lifted their spirits. Coach Tate explained that each tournament is one step closer to a win. The same ladies returned home to again participate in a larger tournament in Plano, known as City Tournament, which brings High Schools from throughout the DFW metroplex to compete. This tournament was divided into 3 categories: team, doubles and singles. The Ladies again proved that they belong in the top of rankings by placing 5th in the tournament.
a perfect score of 300, so we know they are in excellent hands. He works closely with each team member to help them perfect their shot, placement and follow through. Each lady is different in their technique and ball weight but he has it down to a science and watching them perform is pure grace and magic. There are 14 matches for the regular season this year and the Prosper Lady Eagles are undefeated with a 12-0 record. They have already clinched the title of District Champs as their standing is far enough ahead that no other team will be able to reach them the final 2 matches. Several of the team members also participate in competitive leagues throughout the year playing on House Shot and Sport Shot to stay on their toes and be able to compete in various tournaments.
Then, on November 1st, the first game of the season for the Lady Eagle Bowlers was a headto head match against McKinney Boyd, the 2015 Texas State Champions. While nerves were on edge, the ladies came out and played 2 individual games and 3 Baker matches. The Lady Eagle Bowlers overcame the McKinney Boyd Broncos!
At the beginning of February, the ladies traveled to Conroe to compete in a 6th Annual Invitational Collegiate Kat Cup Sport Shot tournament hosted by Sam Houston University. This tournament is by invitation only and only the top Texas High School teams are invited. The pattern the ladies played on was one of the most difficult sport shots. They played well and took 3rd place in the tournament. Over the next few weeks the ladies are going to be taking all of this in to master and perfect their shot as they prepare to return to Regionals, and hopefully, the 2016 Texas High School State Tournament.
To continue to prepare for each match, the ladies meet every Monday to work on their shot with Coach Mickie Tate, who has twice achieved

year! Since forming in 2013, Prosper has been to State each year, with the boys team in 2014, and the ladies team in 2015 and returning hopefully in 2016. This group of bowlers are arguably the best in North Texas and possibly the best in Texas. While there are several other tournaments that are invitational only, we are proud of each lady that has made the effort and traveled to show Prosper Bowling is something to talk about. Representing Prosper in the 1st and 2nd spot in District Individuals, and will likely be selected to compete in the All District Team in College Station in April, are Kennedi Laughlin and DaiMone Lewis, respectively. Only the top 8 in the district are selected. Ally Campbell and Kyla Simons are in the 9th and 10th spots, respectively, and looking each week to move up into that, within reach, top 8. Returning this year are Senior; Johna Graham, Juniors; Kennedi Laughlin, DaiMone Lewis, Ally Campbell, Rhea Kurtti, and Sophomore; Kyla Simons. The Lady Eagle Bowlers added some new additions to the team as well, Exchange student from Japan, Junior Yuriko Onodera and Freshman Hayley Merrell. The next stop for these bowlers is Regionals on March 6th and then on to State in San Antonio in April. Go Lady Eagle Bowlers! #beabeast

In His Presence
I recently noticed a young mother in one of our local stores. Her cart was loaded with packages of candy, a bunny costume, boxes of Peeps, and bags of colorful plastic eggs. I instantly knew what she was doing; she was preparing for Easter. The thought crossed my mind, “Is this really the best way to prepare for Easter?” I’m not being a stick in the mud. I have grandchildren, so I know the joy of watching them tear open Easter baskets and hearing them squeal with delight when they find yet another hidden egg, but I also want them to be aware there is a much deeper reason to celebrate. Easter is when we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Jesus wasn’t the first to claim to be the Messiah. There were literally dozens of Messianic movements around the time Jesus walked the earth. In every case, the leader eventually died and everyone went home; game over. Among all of these movements, there was only one that did not fold up after the leader died. Not only did it not die, the movement flourished, sweeping around the world, and is still growing today. What gave Christianity that sort of power? The answer is what we celebrate in this season, the resurrection. When Jesus was raised from the dead after three days, it was proof positive that He had truly conquered death, Hell and the grave. Resurrection means that death is not the end! And since Jesus isn’t dead, people can still encounter him today. The Bible accurately describes the conditions of man without God. Colossians 2:13 pronounces us “…dead in our trespasses and sin…”. But if you’ll keep reading you see the announcement that gives us reason to kick up our heels and party. “God made [us] alive together with Jesus, having forgiven us all our trespasses, by cancelling the record of debt that stood against us…”. The hope of the gospel is that dead things live again. We’re offered this new life by Christ. We enter into simply by simple faith in Him. That news is sweeter than a whole basket full of candy! Attorneys to Know
IS IT TRUE THAT ONLY THE WEALTHY NEED AN ESTATE PLAN? You’ll often hear that when someone has a neardeath experience, their life flashes before their eyes and they think of the ones they love. That is exactly what happened to Fred Haiman in 2007. Fred was lying in extreme pain on an Emergency Room gurney when he heard the doctor ask his wife, “Does he have a Will … does he have a Medical Power of Attorney ... does he have a Medical Directive ….?” Obviously as an attorney, Fred knew what these documents were, but he had no idea he would need them at this point in his life. Not only very sick and about to go into critical condition for the next 10-days, hearing this brought about an overwhelming feeling of panic. Fred was scared. He thought about his family -- his two little girls and his wife. What would happen to them if he didn’t make it? How would his wife take care of him without the legal authority to make financial and medical decisions for him? How would she get his medical records if she needed them? Would he be kept alive on life support if he survived but was in a vegetative state? Who would be his guardian if he survived but remained completely incapacitated or disabled? Would his assets pass to the people he wanted them to pass to? And on and on … After this life-changing physical battle where the initial 10-day critical condition and 37-day
hospital stay lead to multiple additional hospital stays, 6 surgeries and out of work for over 8-months, Fred’s life took a turn. He found that his calling in this world was to help others avoid the very situation he was in. So estate planning is not just for the wealthy!! NO, IT’S FOR EVERYONE -- anyone over the age of 18 needs some type of estate plan. Plan-
built on the foundational belief that we are to “Faithfully Serve God and our Clients” in everything we do. Our Law Practice focuses exclusively in the following areas: Basic Estate and Life Planning Young Family Protection Planning Legacy Wealth Planning Special Needs Planning Probate and Guardianship Medicaid Planning V.A. Benefit Planning Part of our mission is community outreach, where we share our knowledge with people by giving FREE educational events to individuals and groups who want to be well-informed in any of the above areas.
ning is not a one size fits all, it is not a product that you buy over the internet, it a specific plan for your specific family, your specific financial situation and your specific circumstances. Whether you are a college student eating Ramen Noodles or a multi-billionaire – everyone needs to take the time to sit down with an attorney whose concentration is in estate planning and find out what’s best for you. It’s important to always remember – YOU DON’T KNOW, WHAT YOU DON’T KNOW!! Haiman Law is a Faith-Based Estate Planning, Legacy Wealth Planning and Elder Law Firm
