unshine, bright blooms and greening grass…the signs of Spring are upon us. It’s time to dig out that sunscreen, cleats and sunflower seeds, because baseball and soccer seasons are in full swing! Our children are blessed to have some of the best fields and facilities to play on, and we owe that to the great Town of Prosper and our incredible Parks & Rec staff. The countless hours and immense pride that these guys put into our facilities are immeasurable, so when you see them out and about, please be sure to give them a huge THANK YOU for all that they do!
Now that we are a few weeks into Springtime, I’m sure that everyone is wondering where the best parks are in Prosper…and the great news is that we’ve lined them all out for you this month! Prosper offers everything from splashgrounds and playgrounds to fishing docks and hike/bike trails. If you’re looking to spend some time outdoors, either by yourself or with your children, there truly is something for everyone! Be sure to mark your calendars for the Party in the Park on April 18th also! This concluding ceremony of Prosper’s Centennial year celebration is sure to be a lot of fun. Come out and take a look at the items going into the time capsule and enjoy some great food and music. An event very near and dear to my heart is the 24th Annual Prosper Education Foundation Golf Tournament on April 27th at Gentle Creek. This is a great way to show your support for Prosper ISD. The foundation exists to provide scholarships and grants for our students and faculty. Last year, we provided over $30,000 to our graduating seniors, and plan to continue to grow that number in the coming years. We Are Prosper!

DINING
Refresh.......Refuel
BY DELIA RAMSEY
Fruit and veggie lovers of Prosper no longer have to drive south to Frisco to get their smoothie or juice fix. Refuel Smoothie and Juice Bar opened in December of 2014 as Prosper’s very first juice and smoothie café under the leadership of brothers Grant and Trent Bohne. The Bohne brothers each have a background in the corporate world, but they felt a call to start their own business near the booming 380 corridor. Hoping to satisfy the demand of the town’s growing population, Refuel chose Prosper as its home.
The space is bright and inviting, with a gorgeous wooden counter, modern touches, and lots of industrial accents. The high ceilings give the store a spacious feel, while the vibrant colors add energy and draw you in. Near the counter are bar stools and high-top tables to sit in while you watch them create your fruit concoction of choice. There is also a comfortable sitting area

The smoothies are creatively blended combinations of fresh fruits and vegetables with no added sugars, artfully masking the healthy ingredients for picky children and adults alike. With ingredients such as pomegranate, peaches, mangos, bananas, there is truly something for every fruit lover. There are also two smoothies with loads of protein for full meal replacements. Their Blu-Cumber juice is brimming with blueberries, cucumbers, lemons, and apples, and will leave you feeling refreshed and renewed. Other juices include an Immune Booster and a few green juice options. There is also a town namesake “Prosper Lemonade” featuring celery, apples, pears, lemons, and romaine.
“We wanted to bring healthier options to Prosper. We realize there are limited options here beyond fast food, and we wanted to provide more natural choices for the active and athletic community here,” says Grant Bohne. Located in the center of what has become a very health-oriented shopping center off of Coleman Street, filled with a gym, dance studio, and healthcare offices, Refuel is right next door to Be Fit Yoga, making it easy for customers to grab a glass of refreshing juice after class. Refuel is also a popular destination for those leaving the gym, as well as students from Reynolds Middle School across the street who flock there to socialize and “refuel” after a long day of classes.
supplements or purchase a new Refuel t-shirt to show off your now slimmer figure from their assortment of retail products.
near the front where you can relax and catch up with friends over a healthy beverage.
Start your day out with a healthy boost by doing a quick immunity, ginger, or wheatgrass shot on your way to work or to drop the kids off at school.
Refuel offers a varied selection of made-toorder fruit and meal replacement smoothies, fresh-pressed juices, juice cleanses, and acai bowls. You can also stock up on your favorite
For those who want something more substantial to chew on, Refuel also serves up three varieties of Acai Bowls: banana, chocolate, and peanut butter.
Refuel Smoothie and Juice Bar is only the beginning for the Bohne brothers. Their other new business, JC’s Burger House, located on what has more or less become our very own “restaurant row”, is next on the growing Prosper dining scene. Stay tuned to read more about JC’s Burger House in a future issue.

Jason Mark Dixon Incumbent Town Council, Place 6
Kenneth Dugger Incumbent Town Council, Place 2
My wife Dena and I moved to Prosper 12 years ago and have 4 children: Mark, Drew, Jacob, & Emma. I’m currently a partner with BevCap Management, LLC and have been very active in the community and my church over the years. I have served as Councilman for 5 years, P&Z for 4 years, Chaired Prosper’s Comprehensive Plan and was on Town Council’s Executive Development Team in 2013 and 2014. I’ve also volunteered for Prosper Ladies Association, Willow Ridge HOA, PISD Open Foundation, PISD Bond Committee, SMU Athletic Forum, Capital Campaign for Hope Fellowship, PHS Lacrosse Board and have coached multiple youth sports teams. Prosper needs proven leadership and experience, but the decision to run again did not come lightly. After much prayer and discussion, my family and I decided we needed another term to complete the things that make Prosper a place we are all proud to call home. Having the support and endorsements from local business owners, Town leadership, and encouragement from many pillars within the community helped in our decision. Prosper has several large projects coming very soon. With only 27 square miles, we don’t have the luxury of making mistakes or delaying projects due to inexperience. One of my biggest accomplishments on Council has been leading the charge to eliminate previously approved multifamily apartments within the Town. I helped reduce that number from 6,500 to less than 4,000, and am currently working with developers to reduce that in half! On Council, P&Z, and Chairman of the Comp Plan, I’ve led several initiatives to tighten the overall ordinances within the Town, but at the same time giving tax breaks for small businesses to get started in Prosper. These changes have helped ensure that future property values continue to grow, while at the same time, expanding our tax base. Prosper has the 5th lowest tax rate in Collin County, and the lowest of similar communities. Our Bond Rating improved 3 times, equating to better Interest Rates, saving our citizens MILLION$. While at the same time providing outstanding public service: THE BEST Police & Fire, Parks & Rec, Roads Water & Sewer….all of this and more has been accomplished without raising taxes. Prosper is everything to me. We’ve raised our kids and created lifelong friendships. I couldn’t ask for anything more, but “The Best is yet to Come”!!! We Are Prosper!
I am a native Texan, born and raised in Temple, Texas. My family moved to Prosper in 2003. I graduated from Southwest Texas State in San Marcus, with a degree in marketing. I have a son that goes to Rogers Middle School and a daughter that attends Reynolds Middle School. I have been in the banking and finance industry since the early 1990’s. I currently serve as a Director for the Prosper Historical Society and as the President of the Prosper Lions Club. I was elected to the Prosper Town Council in 2007. I ran on the same values then that I am running on today...I want to make Prosper a great place to live and a great place to raise a family. I have been involved in bringing quality residential developments to Prosper, such as Windsong Ranch, Star Trail and Land Plan. I have also worked on our commercial and retail development, and Kroger, Prosper’s first grocery store, is breaking ground next month. I have served on the Prosper Visioning Committee, Prosper Finance Committee and the Town Technology Committee. I helped to create Prosper’s original Library Board. I have served as the Mayor Pro Tem and am currently the Deputy Mayor Pro Tem for the Town of Prosper. I want to keep Prosper a great place to live and great place to raise a family like it was when I moved here. We need to bring quality retail and commercial development to Prosper. We must increase our tax base with quality new businesses in order to offset the tax burden of our citizens. This allows us to lower our citizen’s current tax rate while increasing the revenue for our school district. We also have to look at roads and infrastructure. We need to plan for a library, a town hall and a police station. I want Prosper to be the place where our children and our future generations want to live and raise their families. I want to continue to improve the Town’s quality while maintaining our small-town, country charm. Prosper, to me, means community and family. My vision for the future is to keep Prosper great. I want Prosper to remain a great place to live and raise a family like it was when I moved here 11 years ago. My goal is to continue to improve the town’s quality while maintaining the small-town, country feel. I want Prosper to be the ideal place to live and raise families.

My wife Gina and I have been married for fifteen years, and have three children. I have twenty years of experience with the same major telecommunications company. We are members of Trinity Presbyterian Church-PCA where I have served as an ordained deacon. I am a Miracle League Sports board member and Bowling Director. I serve the Collin County Commissioners Court as an appointed member of the Myers Park Event Center Advisory Board which includes the Collin County Farm Museum. My financial and analytic skills have made me leader throughout my career. I have a successful track record in multi-million dollar crossfunctional project management. I want to serve and give back to Prosper by bringing those same skills to our Town Council. Over the past year I have attended a majority of the Town Council and Planning and Zoning meetings, and provided action updates through various social media outlets. This has allowed me to follow many of the processes and to gain a unique insight into the viewpoints of the interested parties on all sides. Your voice, the voice of the citizen, is lost with our current representation in Place 6. I want to change that. It is one of the major factors that led to my decision to run. Together, we CAN change that. My campaign priorities include safe streets, strong neighborhoods and small businesses. You can read more about them on my website kernforprosper. com. My vision for Prosper is for it to remain a place where our history and small town appeal are preserved as we continue to grow and develop. We need to increase our tax base and retail conveniences, but our growth should be high quality and consistent with the Comprehensive Plan which came into being after considerable time, tax dollars and citizen input.
My wife, Shannon, and I have been married for 17 years and have lived in Prosper for nearly 9 years. We have two children, Madelyn (7th grade) and Cole (5th grade), both of whom have attended Prosper ISD since kindergarten. I work for AIG Investments as a Vice President in Corporate Debt – Private Placements managing corporate debt investments for the various AIG insurance entities. I served as Vice Chair on the combined Board of Adjustments/ Construction Board of Appeals from October 2007 – September 2009. I then served as Vice Chair (and was a founding member) of the Library Board from October 2009 – September 2012. I have served on the Planning and Zoning Commission since October 2012 (serving as Vice Chair since October 2014). I was also asked to serve on the Comprehensive Planning Advisory Committee (for which I also served as Vice Chair), which met from May 2011 – July 2012 and was responsible for revising and updating the Town’s Comprehensive Plan. My main priorities in running for Council are: (1) responsible development, (2) continued investment in infrastructure, and (3) maintaining a united community. While I am proud of many of the accomplishments of recent Councils, I have been vocal that I think the details of some of the recent, more visible, cases that have been approved by the Council fell short in accomplishing the absolute BEST result. Did these cases address some fundamental needs and desires of the community? Yes. Will they result in good developments? Probably. Were they the BEST we could have done? NO! As the old adage says, the “devil is in the details”. Achieving the BEST results requires diligence and attention to detail, and that is what I can bring to the Council. Like so many others, my wife and I moved to Prosper for the larger space, country feel, and excellent schools. While we found those things, we also found much more…great people and families with an uncommon sense of community. While the town has since grown considerably, Prosper is still the same welcoming, friendly community we first saw nearly 9 years ago. Prosper is a special place and is unique from many of its neighboring communities due to the wonderful people living here. As the town continues to grow and develop, I want to help ensure that feeling is maintained and extends to the commercial and retail businesses that will also become our “neighbors” in the coming years.

Selecting the Right Summer Camp
A
ccording to the American Camping Association (ACA), more than eight million children attend camp each summer. Picking the right camp can be a daunting task. In addition to looking at the quality and variety of daily programs and activities offered by a camp, the ACA suggests parents consider the following while evaluating camps: • What safety and medical accommodations are at the camp? • Is the ratio of counselors to campers appropriate for the child’s age? Younger children require a higher ratio of counselors than older kids. • What percentage of counselors returned from last year? Look for 40 to 60 percent returning staff. • If you’re choosing a sleep-over camp, what are the sleeping quarters, showers and bathroom facilities like at the camp? Check where they are located in relation to one another and ask about their night security procedures. • If daily meals or snacks are provided, ask who selects the menus (it should be a certified nutritionist or dietitian) and how meals are prepared and served. Food storage, preparation and dining areas should meet state health and food service codes. Ask to see sample menus and dining schedules. • How does the camp handle homesickness, adjustment issues, and behavioral problems? • Make sure the camp’s philosophy complements your parenting philosophy and your child’s personality.
20 PROSPER Magazine | April 2015
• What is the camp director’s education and career background? Look for a degree and camp administration experience. • If a child has special needs, can the camp accommodate them? Ask the camp director about facilities and remember to explain all special requirements thoroughly. • If possible, ask to visit the camp before enrolling a child in a program. • Contact the parents of campers who attended in the past to get their impressions. • Compare camps and fees. ACA says fees range from $20 to $120 per day. Many camps offer scholarships Read

I am currently preparing to graduate high school this year. I am 18 years young, highly involved in scouting, volunteering and strengthening myself as a future educator. Throughout my middle and high school years, I have really gotten a chance to discover who I am, what I am capable of, and what I can do to change this world. What’s the best part? I’m not done yet; I’ve only just begun! Throughout my high school career, I can say that without a doubt I had many life changing experiences. As an active member in Scouting throughout high school, I grew close to my peers and really bonded with many. One such bond was with a young man named Cooper, who changed my life in many ways all for the better. We share some very fond memories that I am sure neither of us will ever forget. Cooper was slightly younger than me but we always talked a lot because we really had a lot in common; we ESPECIALLY enjoyed the topic of technology! We grew close over the short amount of time I knew him and I treasure the friendship we had to this day. Unfortunately, our troop seemed to fade away because of issues that were out of our control and I switched to another local troop in order to pursue my Eagle Scout rank. Cooper and I lost touch…until one day when I was laying down on hot cement with a contorted body during a scout meeting trying to spell out these letters – COOP. I wondered, “Who is this Coop person? Why are we spelling out this person’s name?” The vague answers I received were “he is a local scout in our area that has severe brain cancer”, “a scout that is battling cancer”. We were spelling out his name so that he can see how many people are praying for him and watching over him. I went home that night determined to take matters into my own hands and research EXACTLY who this “Coop” was. Eventually, I stumbled across a “Team Cooper” Facebook page showing numerous pictures of “COOP” spelled out in various ways from people
22 PROSPER Magazine | April 2015
living in different places. One of which photos was highlighting my hideously contorted body bending in an unnatural position for the whole world to see my support for COOP. It wasn’t until I actually saw the picture of this “Coop” that I made an instant connection and broke down emotionally and physically. That was my friend Cooper. That was MY Cooper. The guy who I would practice my horrible jokes to, just to see if anyone actually thought they were funny... THAT Cooper. My Cooper. I didn’t handle this discovery well at all, and quite frankly, I was a little scared to speak up. It was then I realized the easiest and most effective way to help; to show support by being there for him. I will never forget our reuniting conversation… he was telling me what needed to be done for his Eagle Scout project – constructing warm blankets for children at the same children’s hospital where he was getting his treatment for cancer…Cooper was 13, working on an Eagle Scout award that only 5% of scouts ever achieve, while battling for his life against cancer. Cooper beat those odds, and was awarded his Eagle Scout rank. It was amazing because Cooper did what many seemed impossible. I saw someone overcome extreme adversary in order to achieve a dream. Cooper had a medical trust fund that many people were donating to in order to help the family offset the extreme cost of chemotherapy and radiation as well as other medical bills not covered by insurance. With the help of my favorite high school teacher and mentor, we devised a plan to help fundraise by selling t-shirts throughout our community. Shortly after the shirts were distributed, Cooper lost his brave battle against cancer. I was devastated. Something more needed to be done to honor this young man’s valorous and successful young life. It was Cooper showing me that he could become
an Eagle Scout that inspired me to power on and push through the challenges that lay ahead of me. I thought long and hard about what I needed to do to benefit the community. I needed to honor Cooper’s brave battle against cancer, highlight his wonderful accomplishments, and leave a lasting legacy of his incredible life for all in the town to see. A memorial! Perfect. I needed to find a location to place the memorial, and I thought the first place I should check was his former school. Let’s just say, Cooper was right by my side the entire project and made it as smooth as it could have gone. Cooper has forever changed my life and steered me in a new direction I never thought possible! After reflecting on the accomplishments of honoring and supporting Cooper, I decided that I will become an advocate for children who are going through personal struggles. I will devote my life to children for the rest of my life to ensure that they have everything they need to be successful. This summer, I have an opportunity to serve at a special summer camp that is operated by volunteers like me. What’s special about this camp? Camp Carefree gives a free week of summer camp to children and families affected by similar adversaries as Cooper experienced. This camp allows children to be around others with a similar condition in a worry free environment. This camp allows children to have fun and be Carefree about their illness while at camp. I am seeking sponsorships and donations to complete my journey to North Carolina where I can help other children like Cooper. All monetary donations will be used to assist with travel expenses, and any excess will be donated directly to Camp Carefree to benefit children in future years. If you would like to donate, please visit http://www.gofundme.com/L73qnc.

What is the Difference
PERFORMANCE
between Real Estate companies? There is a BIG difference in Real Estate Companies. It might happen when you find out your family is growing, or it might happen when you get a new job, but you need a Real Estate Company to help you buy, sell, or invest. How do you know which company to choose? There are a number of basic differences in Real Estate Companies. The purpose of this article is to examine those differences. LOCAL: RE/MAX Performance Group has been in Prosper for more than 15 years. This office has grown to be the 3rd largest company of any kind in Prosper (Currently 33 agents here to serve you). In fact, we were recently awarded the Business of the Year 2014 by the Prosper Chamber of Commerce. It seems like every day there is another story in the news about the rapid growth of Prosper. Real estate agents from all over North Texas are trying to do business here, but their office is in Dallas or Plano. We have been your neighbors for years through thick and thin. BRAND: Many of the newcomers to Prosper and all of North Texas are from other parts of the country and around the world. The Toyota Headquarters is a good example. Those folks are from New York, Kentucky, and California. Many families moving to North Texas have never heard of some of the “regional” companies that are active here. But everyone in the United States knows what RE/MAX is. They already know it is a brand they can trust. KNOWLEDGE: Having knowledge of the local real estate market is key. So whether we are in a slow market like in 2008, or a super-hot market like we are today, your real estate office needs to be keenly aware of absorption rates, appraisal trends, new construction and what the ratio between list price and sales price means when it comes to negotiating a deal. RE/MAX

Performance Group studies these trends on a weekly, monthly and yearly basis. Our staff is constantly researching, training, and studying to make sure we know what is happening in the Prosper real estate market. TRUST: Real estate agents in general are on the list of “least trusted” professionals. RE/ MAX Performance Group emphasizes integrity on a deal by deal basis. We choose to only have agents in this office that live by a code of ethics and integrity that is above reproach. Our motto is “Do the Right Thing.” SERVICE: It is hard to define world-class service, but you know it when you see it. It is staying in touch, even when the news is bad. It is returning phone calls. It is going above and beyond. All you have to do is read some of our recent reviews to know how you will be treated by our office. Most importantly, we get the job done. Our clients give us high ratings when it comes to effectiveness. COMMUNITY: RE/MAX Performance Group cares about the town of Prosper. You see it in the way our people are involved. Here are just a few of the programs and projects our team supports: -Prosper Scholarship Program, Chairman -Prosper Rotary Club, President and Board of Directors -Prosper Education Foundation Board of Directors -Prosper Chamber of Commerce- Past President -Prosper Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors -Prosper Ladies Association -Prosper Founders Fest, Past Chairman -Cornerstone NCT, Current Director and Past Board of Directors -Bethlehem Place

Parks Master Plan Meeting: Originally scheduled for February, a discussion of the Parks, Recreation and Open Space draft Master Plan was held on Thursday, March 26 at Prosper High School. “The Master Plan will cover the next five to ten years,” said Paul Naughton, Prosper’s Landscape Architect. “So, anyone with an interest in park development and recreation programs had an opportunity to see what the current thinking is at the ground level.” The meeting was originally scheduled for late February, but icy roads caused the postponement until late March. Among the topics of discussion were the results of resident surveys regarding their preferences related to parks, recreational programs and the open spaces within the town. Staff also shared identified priority areas and proposed action plans for new parks and recreational facilities contemplated for the Town. “Residents who attended the session on March 26 were exposed to the wide variety of opinions and
preferences that have been expressed by their neighbors,” he added. “Our intent was to see what the Town’s needs and wants were regarding parks and recreation programs as well as what people thought about the Town’s open spaces.” Discussions over the last several months have centered on recreation programs, indoor facilities, park facilities, playgrounds, pavilions, open spaces, trails, athletics, sports, events and special use facilities. “We’re now looking forward to sharing what we’ve been able to gather during our public input stage, and to get a sense of the validity of that information in the wider community,” he said. For more information, residents can contact Paul Naughton at (972) 569-1063 or via e-mail at paul_naughton@prospertx.gov.

“Party at the Park” April 18 at Frontier Park
he yearlong celebration of the incorporation of the Town of Prosper comes to a close on Saturday, April 18 at Frontier Park, says Town Secretary Robyn Battle. “It’s been an incredibly wonderful experience celebrating Prosper’s centennial,” she said. “The year has flown by, and the work of our committee has left a lasting impression on the community. This has truly been a Prosper-wide effort that will remain lodged in our memories for a long time.” Battle is the chair of the Prosper Centennial Celebration Committee, made up of Town employees, community volunteers and partners from the Prosper ISD and local business community. The Centennial Celebration’s closing event is billed as “Party at the Park” and will occur on Saturday, April 18 from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the pavilion area of Frontier Park on the north side of Town. “We’ll have a brief opening ceremony for the closing event at 2 p.m.,” she said. “Then the festivities will begin. All sorts of fun activities for kids and adults are planned, including an adult kickball tournament.” Food, games, rides and drinks will be the highlight of the afternoon’s event. Various vendors will be set up to offer information and samples or sales of their

products or services. Food trucks, providing a wide variety of cuisines, will be stationed near the pavilion to give party attendees a chance to purchase their favorite treats. The committee has also been working to identify objects to place in a 100-year time capsule that will be buried at Fire Station #2 once it’s completed. The items will be on display at the pavilion during the event. “In addition, there will be live and recorded music throughout the
day,” said Battle. “A little after 4 p.m., one of the highlights of the day will be the presentation of our special musical guests, the Reflections Band.” The band plays mostly oldies with a modern sound. They will take the stage at 4:15 p.m. and play their brand of music until the event closes at 6 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. Free but limited parking is available at Frontier Park. However, free parking and shuttles will be available to and from the parking lot of nearby Prosper High School. Shuttle buses will start shortly before 2 p.m. and continue until the last rider is delivered back to the parking lot. Prosper was incorporated in 1914 and initially operated under a commission form of government. Today, the Town operates on a Council/Manager form of government. All Council members, including the Mayor, are elected at-large. The Town Manager serves as chief executive officer for the administration of Town services. The Centennial Celebration began with an opening carnival in April of last year and has been commemorated in a number of events and activities throughout the year, concluding with the April 18 celebration. More information on the celebration is available at www.prospertx.gov.

Last month we discussed the history of Walnut Grove Presbyterian Church. This month, I want to share a letter that was written in 1909 by James Rhea to the pas-tor of Walnut Grove Presbyterian, M.C. Harris. This is reprinted with permission from the Genealogy Friends of Plano Libraries, Inc. My father and mother, Joseph R. and Emmaline M. Rhea and family emigrated from Roane County, E. Tennessee, to Texas in the fall of 1855. We left the old home on the 25th day of September and struck camp near “Old Sway Back” late in the evening of November 29th. This much you will permit me to say by way of explanation, in behalf of “Old Sway Back.” The early settlers in the neighborhood were a Christian people and recognizing the neces-sity of having a place for religious services and for educating their children had united their labors and contributions and built on a pretty flat near a spring a log house about 18 by 20 feet. This was the only public place in the community and for several miles around where children went to school and the gospel was preached. The builders before putting on the rafters and roof had failed to tie the plates with girders, spreading, the roof settled down in the middle and the house became known as Old Sway Back, not a very euphonious name, but, never spoken in opprobrium, for many a person went from its sacred precincts happier and better because of the new life in Christ Jesus, which had come into their soul. What is now known as the Walnut Grove Congregation of the Presbyterian Church, U. S. A., was then the United Congregation of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, if I should, indeed, be justified in speaking of it as a local organization, at all. At that time it was more on the order of a floating Tabernacle, so to speak. The Elders were widely separated in point of habitation and did not get together in a ses-sion meeting sometimes but once a year. As I now remember, my mother, brother John and myself were admitted to membership in the congregation on the 13th day of October, 1855. We were admitted by letter from Oak Grove Congregation Hiwassee Presbyterian East Tennessee Synod of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church on date above named, the first opportunity after our arrival in the community. My brother, W. A. Rhea, was admitted to membership by letter as above, as a Ruling Elder but date not remembered. The Elders of the congregation at the time of which I write were Judge Harrison Jamison; Benj. Hodg-es and Caleb Hart. Rev. W. B. Wear, a Cumberland Presbyterian emigrated from the state of Missouri, proba-bly in the year 1852 and settled in the neighborhood not far from where the church house now stands. He was one of Natures noblemen, a Christian gentleman and a fine preacher and was regarded as the father and founder of Cumberland Presbyterianism in the locality. He was one of those sweet spirited, persuasive preachers that appeals to the best that was in a person, and was instrumental in the hands of God in bringing many into the Mas-ter’s fold. An important event that took place in the congregation in the spring of 1858 was the meet-ing of White Rock Presbytery. Sway Back was inadequate to the occasion and the people of the community turned out and cleared up the grounds and built an arbor in an elm grove in the southeast corner of Elder T. H. Cunningham’s field across the creek from the church, and there meetings of the body were held. The Presbytery embraced a large territory and quite a number of ministers and elders were present. Among the ministers in attendance were Rev. A. J. McGee; Rev. John Tate, who had lately come to Texas from our old Presbytery in Tennessee, an old acquaintance and it was a pleasure to meet and entertain them. Rev. W. B. Wear, Jr., who had been under the care of Presbytery for some time was or-dained to the full work of the ministry. It was my first time to be present on such an occa-sion, I remember it, to this day, as a very solemn and impressive service. Soon after this meeting, arrangements were made for budding a church house. My father was made chairman of the building committee, and if my memory serves me correctly, the house was built and dosed in; as it was correctly called, not later than the summer of 1859.The house was 30 by 32 feet. Soon the house was ready for occupancy, Rev. Wick Smith was called to the pastoral charge of the church. He and his family had emigrated to Texas from Middle Tennessee, probably in the fall of 1854 and at somewhat later date bought a farm above ¾ miles southwest of the church. Brother Smith was a very social man, commanding in his appear-ance, pleasant and

interesting in his address and a fine preacher. He remained in charge of the congregation till some time during the war, when he moved to Grayson, near Pilot Grove. So far as I can remember, there was no pastor in charge of the church at the time of my home-coming in June 1865, (he evidently meant his return from the Civil War). The first pastor of which I have any account after the above date is that of Rev. T. J. Malone who came from Kentucky to Texas at an early date and settled in the northern portion of Dallas County. His pastorate began in 1867 and continued till the fall of 1870. He was a man of ability and companionable and entertaining in the family circle and was es-teemed a most profound theologian of the Presbytery. Rev. P. W. Renison, a local young minister, was employed to fill up the time until the church could procure another pastor. Rev. S. M. Wilkins, another one of the early fathers of the church in Texas was called and he was pastor in the fall of 1870, October, and continued till the close of 1871. During his pastorate the church was enlarged, reseated and finished at a cost of $1000.00. Rev. R. F. Jones of Grayson succeeded to the pastorate in January 1872 and continued till the close of 1873. Rev. C. N. Jarrell was called to the pastorate in the spring of 1874 and continued till the close of 1877.

In August 1885, Rev. C. B. Hodges with his big tent held a camp meeting of two weeks on the church ground. He was a noted evangelist and a pioneer in the big tent camp meeting line. Many tenters were on the ground and large congregations were in attendance on all the services. The meeting was a great season of refreshing from the Lord, for his people and 24 converts were the visible results from the ranks of the unsaved. A purse of $150.00 was made up for Bro. Hodges and presented from a loving and appreciative people. The present church was completed early in 1886 at a cost of $1,425.00. There are some other things that I would like to speak of, especially of the young men that were called to the ministry and took up the work of the ministry from the Walnut Grove Congregation. They were well remembered by the community and their work too well known to need special mention at this time. Yours very truly and fraternally, James C. Rhea

THE STYLE

Flowers are blooming everywhere this spring, and the runway is no exception. Whether your floral pieces feature delicate buds or flowers in full bloom, here are three specific ways to freshen up your outfits with these feminine prints. Add a tiny bit of print in a shoe or bag for a subtle statement. Wedges will transition effortlessly from spring to summer, and can be paired with a flowy dress or shorts, too. Not sure what to pair the print with? Try pulling the rest of the outfit from the colors in the print, like this blush tank, jean jacket, and white jeans. Up the ante with a flowery dress or top. To add a little more polish (or tone down a pattern), add a completer piece, like this jacket. Here, the subtle pattern mix adds great visual interest. For fool-proof pattern mixing, make sure one print is the star of the show, and stick to the same color palette to tie the look together. To make a bold statement, choose a floral skirt or pants. Brocade fabrics, like this skirt, add an elegant touch to an outfit, and can work for day or evening. Tailored and classic tops keep the look work appropriate, but for evening or a special event, try mixing textures, like brocade and lace, or floral pants with a silky top or leather jacket. If you’re adding a floral piece to your wardrobe, keep in mind that floral prints designed with colors found in nature are the most versatile and classic, so you can wear them year after year. In general, look for prints that match your stature to avoid choosing a pattern that looks out of proportion. For example, if you’re tall, don’t be afraid to wear bold prints. Petite? Small to medium-size prints will flatter your figure and keep from overwhelming your frame.

Brush 1/2 marmalade mixture over ham, gently separating slices so mixture can reach middle of ham. Cover loosely with foil. Bake 1 hour, basting occasionally with pan drippings. Remove foil. Brush with remaining marmalade mixture. Bake 45 minutes longer. Serve ham with pan drippings. Tip: Pair spices like ginger or chipotle with fruity jams and preserves to balance out saltiness of ham. Cherry Bourbon, Apricot Pineapple Chipotle or Lemon Ginger are easy flavor combinations your guests will love, and are all available on McCormick.com.

What if every graduating senior from Prosper could receive a college scholarship? Can you imagine the impact this would have on our students, families and even the entire community of Prosper? The Prosper Education Foundation, Prosper Ladies Association, and the Prosper Rotary Club have joined forces to one day make this dream a reality. We have formed the Prosper Scholarship Program. Here is why…

People with degrees are also healthier.” No matter your source, few would argue that a college education will provide graduates with:
culture, the advent of the student loan. Since 2003, student loan debt in the United States has grown from $500 billion to $1.3 trillion and it is escalating every year. Not only is this a tremendous drain on American families, financial experts are seeing ominous clouds on the horizon. “It’s inevitable at some point there will be a cap on student loan guarantees. When that happens you’re going to see a repeat of what we saw in the housing market: when easy credit for buying or flipping a house disappeared we saw a collapse in the price of housing, and we’re going to see that same collapse in the price of student tuition, and that’s going to lead to colleges going out of business,” states Mark Cuban in a 2014 issue of Business Insider.com.
Prosper Scholarship Program
A college education is a part of the “American Dream”, similar to owning your own home. Parents all over our country work, save and dream that their children will have the opportunity to go to college. They believe a college education will give their children the skills, knowledge and experience they need to prepare them for the workplace and to make an important contribution to our society. Recent reports confirm this belief. In her article, “The Value of a College Degree”, journalist Emily Hanford said, “College-educated people not only tend to have higher earnings than others, they are also more likely to have health and retirement benefits, and they are far less likely to be unemployed. Having a degree is not just about economic advantages. People with

Here is one example of how devastating this can be to a family: Peter and Valerie Walker went to college. He became an electrical engineer and she went into teaching. They did everything they could to help their 4 children have a great life. The children all applied for scholarships, but their parents made a little much to qualify.
They amassed student loans of over $500,000. Two of the children have paid off their loans, but the other two continued to need their parents’ assistance. The Walkers spent through all their retirement and savings. They took a second mortgage on their home and have abandoned all plans of early retirement. What would it have meant to this family if this debt were cut in half? This story is not unique. It is happening to families all over America and right here in Prosper.
to help Prosper families. We want to see all our graduates get a college education, not just the more affluent ones. You can help. Here is how…
What if we could cut the cost of a college degree in half for all Prosper High seniors? Imagine the impact of saving $40-$50- $60,000 per child for our fellow Prosper residents. Just imagine the lives that could be changed in those families who have never been able to send their children to college.
PISD officials state that approximately 22% of Prosper’s graduating seniors go to Collin College. The cost per student is only $1,250 per year (2 semesters). You can make donations to the Prosper Ladies Association, Prosper Education Foundation, or the Prosper Rotary Club. Be sure to designate your gift to the Prosper Scholarship Program. Every single dollar donated will go to a Prosper student in the form of a scholarship.

The Prosper Scholarship Program is now taking applications for the 2015-2016 school year. You can help us get the word out to this year’s seniors and their families. Interested students should contact their high school counselor write to prosperscholarship@gmail.com or call 972900-2338 to obtain an application.
All three of these organizations have a nonprofit 501c3 status, so your donations are tax deductible. Give $1,250 to pay for one or you may have the resources to pay for 10 or more students to go to college. We intend to award full scholarships to as many Prosper seniors as we can. We have pledged $45,000 toward this goal. But we need more. Last but not least, all three of these organizations; Prosper Rotary Club, Prosper Education Foundation and the Prosper Ladies Association need new members and volunteers. Get involved! Join one of these great organizations! Change the world one life at a time!

IN HIS PRESENCE
The Signs of Spring The signs of spring are everywhere! The long and sometimes challenging winter has come to an end and new life is blooming right before our eyes. Every spring we are reminded of the glory of our great creator, God, as He yet another year, displays His incredible glory through the changing of the seasons. Nothing displays His beauty, creativity and love for mankind like the dawning of spring. He’s a great God who has a way with reminding us at this time every single year that He has a passion for bringing dead things back to life. From the beauty of Easter lilies and pink azaleas to the white buds of a Bradford pear tree it’s hard to miss His awesome wonder. With the arrival of spring also comes the opportunity for the great residents of Prosper to get out of their winter hibernation and enjoy the incredible park facilities of our town. We are incredibly blessed to live in a town that has some of the best places to spend time with the family, throw or kick a ball, toss a Frisbee, walk the dog or just simply get out and get some much overdue exercise. Whether it’s Boyer, Eagle’s Landing, Folsom, Frontier, First Street, Hays, Main Street, Pecan Grove, Town Lake or Whitley Place Parks, the options are many. But nothing says spring like the sound of children competing with their teams on the many fields of play in our parks. From soccer to baseball, the children of our great town have the best facilities anywhere to have fun learning a game & developing their skills. What an incredible blessing Frontier Park is to the kids of our town. Last summer, my family was visiting family out of state and while there we took in a little league baseball game of one of our family members. My son, already graduated from PYSA sports leagues and now in High School, quickly noticed the vast difference in the ball fields he grew up playing on versus the one the game we were watching was on. It was in that moment that he realized that the fields he played on at Eagle’s Landing and Frontier Park were not the norm but rather the exception. Of course with the arrival of spring comes the excitement for the summer break that is just around the corner. From kids to teens the camp season will be in full gear in just a couple of months. At COC Metro, we love summer because it gives us the opportunity to invest back into the next generation with our camp season. From youth camp in Glorietta, New Mexico to pre teen camp at Camp Copass and finally Princess & Prince Warrior camp right here locally, it will be plenty busy. Some of the greatest investments that were made into my life as a kid happened within the environment of summer camp. Some of the greatest decisions I made about life and my future were made in the atmosphere of a camp setting. Take advantage, as well, of the many camps that will be offered over the summer months. It might just be the one week that could change a life. I hope that after reading this you are ready to dive into this great time of the year! It’s time to get up and get out…..it’s been a long winter. So will you join me? I’ll see you at the park! Get outside and enjoy the beauty of God’s creation! T
here is an age-old phrase in Real Estate: Location, location, location! In tax preparation, the equivalent mantra is File, file, file! As everyone understands, the April 15 deadline is looming, but it doesn’t have to bring the traditional stress. Follow three simple tips to lower your stress and ensure that you remain in compliance.
De-stress your tax season
Last minute tips and advice from a tax pro
BY LYNN A. GROSS, CPA
1. File your tax return—The first rule is to simply get your return filed. If it is later determined that you made a mistake or missed some info, you can always amend by filing Form 1040X. 2. File an extension—If you just aren’t ready to file your return, you can file an extension. If you don’t owe any additional tax to the IRS, then the extension offers six additional months to get your information together with no penalty. 3. File an extension but pay taxes owed—The extension extends your filing date, but does not extend the time to pay. Be sure to pay owed taxes at the time you file to avoid penalties. There is a penalty for failure to file and for failure to pay. At least eliminate one penalty. While the best approach is always to start early in the year, it is not too late to review for additional deductions that might reduce your tax liability. Rather than taking the standard deduction, consider completing Schedule A. Schedule A gives you the opportunity to itemize your deductions and it might yield some tax savings. The following are often overlooked deductions: 1. Medical mileage—Miles driven to doctor appointments, hospitals, and pharmacies can be deducted at $.235 per mile. This is one of those deductions that have to meet a minimum level first before the deduction is allowed. The floor is 7.5% of adjusted gross income for folks over 65 and 10% of AGI for everyone else. If you meet the minimum level, increase your deduction by utilizing the mileage deduction. 2. Charitable mileage—This is deductible at $.14 per mile and could allow a larger charitable deduction. Charitable mileage might be recorded while volunteering with a child’s organization such as Scouts, church groups, or any other charitable organization. There are other volunteer expenses that you may also want to consider such as uniforms or hotel and other travel expenses while traveling for the charitable organization. 3. Refinance/purchase of home—Did you refinance or purchase a home this year? Points paid on debt to acquire your principal residence are considered mortgage interest but did you know that you can deduct mortgage interest on one other home? The points may be reported on Form 1098 or review the settlement statement that you received at closing for loan origination fees, loan discount, discount points, or points. In purchasing a home, the points are deductible in the year paid. On refinance, the points are a deduction over the life of the loan. 4. Sales tax—Because we have no state income tax, we are allowed to deduct our actual sales tax paid. If you didn’t keep all your receipts for the year (and most don’t) you can use the sales tax table that computes your deduction based on your income and number of deductions. The sweetness of this deduction is you can also deduct the sales tax paid on large purchases like cars, boats, recreational vehicles, and other large dollar items. If you have questions, always consult a tax preparer or visit www.irs.gov. Lynn A. Gross, CPA LLC is a local CPA firm with offices in downtown Prosper. Her firm has over 40 years combined experience in tax preparation. You may contact her at 972-346-3100 or visit the website at www.lynngrosscpa.com.
