Prosper’s Own JC’S Burger House
BY DELIA RAMSEY
The very first location of JC’s Burger House opened in a hole-in-the-wall humble strip mall in Plano in 1999, under the leadership of owners Jay (JC) and Sondra Cockerell. Jay had always been told “you should start your own restaurant” after people sampled his culinary creations. Seeing a void in the burger market at the time, Jay embarked on the journey of creating a “real” old fashioned burger, including his blend of secret seasonings and special fresh ground USDA Choice Chuck.
made it their mission to bring juicy burgers and a comfortable hometown hangout to Prosper residents as well. The crowd on opening night spoke volumes. This town is certainly ready and waiting for new restaurants, and warmly welcomed them to town by coming out in droves. I tried to outsmart
Fast forward 16 years, and you’ll now find seven thriving JC’s Burger House locations in the north Dallas area with a major fan following. Though the original JC passed away in 2013, he would undoubtedly be proud of the continued growth and success of this legacy he leaves behind. JC’s has held the title of “Best Burger in Collin County” time and time again. That legacy continues now in Prosper. We scored our very own location this year when they opened to the public on April 7th. the line and mustered up the courage to survive the crowd. Once the line is over and I am sitting down with my plate of food, I’m always glad I did. The inside of JC’s Burger House Prosper transformed me to a “Friday Night Lights” state of mind, a place where people gather in fellowship with friends, a place where football is king, and a place where everybody can recognize a familiar, smiling face. A picture of the state of Texas is the centerpiece of the large wall, with the famous and beloved Prosper “P” emblazoned across the spot where our town is located. More importantly, JC’s has already proven to be a place where you can come to expect consistently hot and fresh food and service with a smile and polite conversation.
what I knew would be a lengthy line by trying to call in a to-go order, but alas, could not find any phone number listed online anywhere yet. So I dragged my introverted self to the back of
I have to begin by telling you about my latest favorite sandwich: the Patty Melt served at JC’s Burgers House. The staff can all tell you, they see me in there at least once a week stuffing my face with this flavor-packed handheld. Always cooked fresh to order, their version is served on crisp Texas Toast with American cheese,

grilled peppers and onion, and their signature burger patty. Order yours with a side of their seriously addictive homemade Ranch dressing. Beyond the stellar Patty Melt lie countless other mouth-watering menu items. If you’re into fried appetizers, choose between Jalapeno Bites, Fried Pickles, or Mozzarella Sticks. Try a traditional burger, served “all the way” with mayo, mustard, lettuce, tomato, red onion, and pickles. Burgers come in a variety of sizes, and you can also choose a turkey or veggie burger option instead.

If you want to full on indulge yourself, check out the “To Die For” Cheese Fries, which come smothered in cheddar, bacon, and jalapenos, served with that awesome homemade ranch dressing. A half order is mountainous. JC’s is also now selling beer and wine. Grab a bud, a beer, and a burger and sit back and watch as Prosper continues to boom all around us.

The Eagles Nest
2015 District Teachers of the Year
Jonathan Jamar Mr. Jonathan Jamar has been teaching in the district since 2011, and he believes that teaching is a privilege. He builds a classroom around trust, instantly making his students feel calm and safe. He loves seeing his students grow and gain confidence, reaching all of his students by getting to know them on a deeper level. He is highly entertaining and engaging in class, and his students love how he incorporates his musical and technological skills into his daily lessons. Mr. Jamar feels compelled to be great for all of his kids, the kids who don’t believe in themselves, the kids who need a gentle push to be greater, the kids who just need a smile and kind word. They are the motivation that inspires him every day.
Connie Miserak Mrs. Miserak has been with the district since 2010, and she has built an incredible district choral program. Under her guidance, the high school choir program has grown exponentially. Mrs. Miserak believes that one of the most important things that teachers can do is to notice students. That is what she does. She believes in them and helps them to believe in themselves. They begin to believe that their value and worth lie in the fact that they simply are and that they have something to offer the world. She looks at each child and understands their individual learning process and helps them along their way in a positive manner. She feels that her purpose is more than teaching music. It is to lift students up, engage them no matter their skill level, and to help them smile each day.

T wn Matters From the desk of: Mayor Ray Smith
UNPREDICTABLE WEATHER Requires Planning and Action Spring storms, often occurring with little notice and frequently accompanied by high winds, hail, thunder and lighting, can cause severe havoc on a community, leaving a trail of power outages, water shut-offs, blocked roads and trapped residents. Being prepared is absolutely essential and taking the right precautions might even save lives, says Prosper Mayor Ray Smith. “Families that have a definite plan of action, including pre-arranged gathering places and adequate measures for safety and first aid, are the ones that withstand emergencies the best,” he said. “Homes and businesses should develop their plans and practice them until they’re second nature.” The local area has seen an unusual mix of violent weather and steady rain. The rain has caused significant runoff and flooding in the general Prosper area, and the violent storms in the surrounding communities have spawned numerous tornados and high-wind damage. “It’s
16 PROSPER Magazine | June 2015
been an uncommon combination of heavy rain in our immediate area, and tornados in other nearby parts of north Texas,” he said. “It goes to show that the unpredictability of the weather should encourage us to remain ever vigilant. And, that includes not driving into low water crossings, remember, turn around, don’t drown.” There are several ways to stay abreast of these fast-changing conditions and be ready to respond. One is registering with Samrt911 (www.smart911.com) and developing a profile. Registrants with a Prosper address can opt to receive alerts on weather and other emergencies. Another is visiting www.knowhat2do.com and becoming familiar with the information, advice and resources the site provides. The Knowhat2do site urges residents to Think, Prepare and Act when dealing with a natural disaster. The three elements are clearly important, most especially being prepared before a tragedy strikes.
Among the preparations that the Prosper Police, Fire and EMS personnel recommend highly is the creation of an emergency kit that allows families, individuals and organizations to withstand emergency situations. Being ready for weather-related emergencies with adequate supplies like water, food, medicines and other essentials can make an incredible difference. A basic kit along with additional supplies, as suggested by www.ready.gov is provided as a guide. “Being ready, whether or not the kit is ever used, makes sense for everyone. It’s far better to be ready and not need an emergency kit, than to need one and not have one in place,” said the Mayor. “Emergency kits have proven to be life-savers and having one available gives families a certain level of peace-of-mind.”
PROSPER FAMILY DENTISTRY Emergency Preparedness Kits To aid Prosper residents in disaster preparedness, the following list of essential items for an emergency kit is being offered as an example of what a kit may contain. Special situations such as households with infants, elderly or handicapped persons may require additional supplies. • Water, one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days, for drinking and sanitation • Food, at least a three-day supply of nonperishable food • Battery-powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert and extra batteries • Flashlight and extra batteries • First aid kit • Whistle to signal for help • Dust mask, to help filter contaminated air and plastic sheeting and duct tape to shelter-in-place • Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation • Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities • Can opener for food • Local maps • Cell phone with chargers

In His Presence
Area Church Directory
Hope Springs Eternal By Pastor Jack Graham
The field stretches out in emerald perfection, the scent of the freshly mown grass sweet as a stroll in the country. The groundskeepers roll the baselines straight and true, capturing in that broad sweep of green the season’s endless possibilities. For fans of the great game of baseball, nothing matches the hope of spring, when no one languishes in last place and everybody can dream of the World Series. On opening day, the vendors seem friendlier, the hot dogs hotter, the popcorn extra crunchy. No matter what the weather—already summer-like in Arlington or Phoenix and still winter in Cleveland and Boston—the anticipation leading up to that first game makes every fan a school kid again. But baseball is a lot like life, filled with ups and downs, victories and defeats. And in the relentless heat of summer, springtime hopes for a World Series seem as likely as a sudden cold snap. The world has a way of trampling our hopes, sweeping them away like a walk-off homer in the bottom of the ninth. One moment we’re up, confident, counting down to the final strike. And then a hanging curveball, the sharp crack of the bat and a ball that soars deep into the nighttime sky, carrying our hopes with it. No wonder the Bible speaks of building on the solid rock foundation of faith in Jesus Christ. The world might tug at us as we follow the narrow road to salvation, but faith in God sustains far more than any human hope could. Wouldn’t it be great if Christians could borrow a page from the book of baseball and savor the hopeful joy that fans find this time of year, that they could share the Good News of Jesus casually around the water cooler or with friends and family and look forward with a fan’s fervor to the great day of salvation? Just think of it—all of God’s children gathered together, swept up in eternal joy, carrying their gloves, wearing their caps, all heading toward that celestial stadium shining gold and silver in the heavenly light. When that game is over, we’ll talk about the next one, and the one after that, savoring an endless season when everyone’s a winner. Because heaven is a place filled with all of God’s greatest creations. And with all those wonderful things, well, you know there has to be baseball. Home Improvements Make it Easier to Entertain at Home BY JOEY WOMBLE
One of the best ways to increase the value of your home and get more enjoyment out of it for your family is to build or enhance your outdoor living areas. Recent real estate market trends include energy efficiency, open floor plans, awesome kitchens and bathrooms…but nothing provides more bang for your buck than maximizing your outdoor living and entertainment space. In a recent article on Realtor.com, more than 50% of the buyers stated that outdoor living spaces were one of the things they were looking for in their search for a new home. Going head to head with the other homes for sale can be daunting, but if you have an awesome outdoor living space, you have the advantage. One of my latest listings in Lakes of La Cima sold very quickly. The buyers who fell in love with the home mentioned the pergola, outdoor living area, the landscaping, and more. I know this helped us sell the home quickly. At the same time, the homeowners shared with me that the thing they would hate leaving the most were the awesome memories their family had shared together out in the backyard. IMPROVE YOUR CURB APPEAL AND LANDSCAPING One of the best ways to improve your home begins in the front yard. Not only will you enjoy this every time you drive up, but your neighbors will too. Plus, when it’s time to sell, great drive up appeal always helps set you apart. Working in the front yard can be fun and inexpensive. Paint your front door red if possible. Add some
24 PROSPER Magazine | June 2015
color to the front flower beds. Put down fresh mulch. Prune the trees. If you have large trees, raise the canopy so that the grass gets more sun. Make sure the trim around your home is freshly painted, if needed. ADD A DECK OR PATIO The price of adding a deck or patio can be more than you want to spend. However, decks and patios add a high return on investment for the homeowner. Not only do you get the enjoyment of the outdoor living area, but when it comes time to sell, you should expect an average of about 80% of your investment. If you are a good at DIY projects, you can really save some money. But don’t forget the value of your time and energy. It might pay to have this done for you in the long run. Most homeowners and potential buyers add a deck, patio, and other outdoor living areas high on their wish list for a new home. Adding a pergola is something you can do yourself or you can hire a company that specializes in them. The most important reason to consider a pergola is time spent outdoors. The shade it provides will increase your time spent out on the deck considerably. Depending on who completes the construction, expect your costs for a 10’x10’ pergola to be between $1,500 - $4,000. FIREPLACE OR FIRE PIT If your family is like mine, nothing is better than a fire pit on a cool fall or spring evening. My son just added one to his deck and at a recent party, sitting around the fire pit was at a premium because all the guests wanted a front row seat.
You can build one yourself for just a few hundred dollars. Check out YouTube for easy directions. You can also buy them at your local outdoor furniture or fireplace store, or you can hire a professional to build it for you. The money you spend on this feature will be well worth it. THE AMERICAN ICON-THE SWIMMING POOL People ask me all the time, “Should we build a pool?” My answer is always this, “It depends.” If you are building a pool for your own family’s enjoyment, then by all means, my answer is yes. If you are building a pool to increase the value of your home, then I would recommend not. Most appraisers will only give somewhere between $15,000 - $30,000 value for a pool, and we all know they cost a lot more than that. Plus, having a pool automatically eliminates more than half of all buyers. On the other hand, those families who really want a pool, really want a pool. Pools are great fun for the whole family, but whoever has the job of maintaining it has a big job cut out for them. They require a lot of TLC. If you are considering any kind of outdoor improvements to enhance your outdoor living areas, please call us at RE/MAX Performance Group at 972-347-2135 or come by to see us at our new offices at 1180 E Prosper Trail. Not only can we provide you with tons of market information concerning how these improvements will affect your home’s value, we can also put you in touch with the area’s top providers of outdoor living areas.

THE STYLE
BY CAITLIN SKIDMORE
S S
tylists are paid a lot of money to come up with outfits for shows and movies. Use the looks they put together for an actress or show as inspiration to freshen up your own closet! Here are a few examples. Hart of Dixie-Inspired Fashion Hart of Dixie stylists favor pieces that are traditional (especially southern) with a twist. They stick to mostly feminine cuts but often mix feminine and masculine pieces to give the looks a modern feel. The colors are fresh and saturated, and they play with patterns- especially florals to make the outfits visually striking. The actresses are styled with bold jewelry, colorful shoes and bags, and usually don lipstick to polish off the look. A few specific ways to copy the show’s style: • Button a button up all the way up; • Pair feminine and masculine pieces (like lace and leather, gingham and sparkles, etc.); • Mix patterns. For fool-proof pattern mixing, stick to the same color family and be sure one print is the star of the show. Scandal-Inspired Fashion Perfect for corporate inspiration, Scandal
38 PROSPER Magazine | June 2015
Show-Inspired Style/Show Stopping Style stylists love fitted pieces that scream corporatechic. Silky blouses, tweed, and classic jackets are their go-to’s. The color palettes usually fall within neutrals and pastels, which always look timeless.
Get their looks by: • Pairing a graphic tee with a cozy sweater or leather jacket; • Use jewel tones and delicate embellishment to create a luxe look.
Accessories are simple, clean, and minimal, and highlight the fact that everything fits the actresses perfectly- close to the body, but not tight.
Using a variety of shows for inspiration will give you ideas for different areas of life: the office, weekend wear, and special occasions.
To shop your closet for similar looks, try: • Mixing textures, like tweed with a silky fabric; • Adding subtle color, texture, and shine into your look, like this sheath with a leather-trim collar paired with a shimmering tweed jacket. This will help simple pieces stand out and create a more visually interesting outfit. Nashville-Inspired Fashion Nashville is a great place to look for special occasion or laid back inspiration. The actresses dress up in lots of textured pieces, especially embellishments, lace, and leather. When they’re off-duty, the stars are usually in cozy casual pieces with some sort of visual interest- a print, woven sweater, etc. Because the individual pieces have so much character, accessories are usually minimal.

Remember When - A Look Back at Prosper’s History
Wear Cemetery BY BILL HAYS
The Wear Cemetery is located approximately two miles east of Prosper, Texas on First Street, just west of Custer Road. The official spelling is Wear, although it was sometimes spelled Ware in the past. The proper spelling was corrected and changed in 1980. This cemetery was named for Reverend William Barnett Wear and his wife, Elizabeth “Eliza” Finley Wear. The Wear’s came to Texas from Missouri around 1852, along with the Renison family. The Renison family settled in Rock Hill and the Wear family settled on the land where the cemetery is located. William Barnett Wear, Sr. was born December 9, 1804 in Kentucky and died on March 26, 1867 in Walnut Grove. His wife, Elizabeth “Eliza” Finley Wear was born August 27, 1811 in Christian County, Kentucky. She married William Barnett Wear in 1826 in Kentucky. She died August 16, 1887 in Walnut Grove and is buried in the Wear Cemetery along and beside her husband, W. B. Wear. The history of the Wear Cemetery begins in the early 1850’s when Preston Trail, which was later named Shawnee Trail, was being used for cattle drives. On one of these drives a young drover
40 PROSPER Magazine | June 2015
became ill and was left at the Wear home to recover. He subsequently died of typhoid and was buried on the corner of the Wear farm. The name of the driver was not known but became the grave of the “unknown cowboy”. This was the beginning of what would become the Wear Cemetery.
gravesites are north-south burials and the newer ones are buried east-west. At one time there was a tabernacle in the back of the cemetery on the north side, but this has been torn down. Some of the early pioneers of the Prosper area are buried in Wear Cemetery, such as the Wears, Harpers, Crocketts, Martins and some of the Horns.
Reverend Wear started the Sway Back Union congregation of the Cumberland Presbyterian church in 1852. The family built an 18 x 20 foot log cabin. The cabin had a long ridgepole that supported the rafters in the church. It was so long that it developed a swayback in the pole and the church became known as the “Swayback Church”. When the Rhea family came in and settled in 1855, they donated some land for a new church and it became the Walnut Grove Presbyterian church.
Next month, we will discuss several other settlements the in Prosper area that were founded prior to 1902. They include Scott, Smith, Horn, Cottage Hill, Bethel and Zion.
As of today, Wear Cemetery is still an active cemetery. It is fenced and is well maintained. The gravesites start about half way back, leaving the front of the cemetery empty. It is the only cemetery in Collin County that does not follow the east-west rule for burials. The older
