REETINGS MMHS MEMBERS,

I am very pleased to announce the launch of the McMaster Medicine and Health

Society’s inaugural club newsletter! This newsletter series will serve as a platform to facilitate a stronger relationship between our members and the executive team, more so than ever before. Specifically, our aim is to build a greater sense of community and to ensure that every member feels like they are a part of the club. Additionally, we strive to keep members well informed of upcoming events and opportunities across campus, allowing for students to take full advantage of the services provided. In this issue, our team has put together a synopsis of MMHS events, both past and upcoming, as well as highlight an exciting new club partnership with the Ontario Pre-Medical Association.

As the inaugural issue, we would love to hear any recommendations that you have, specifically regarding what you would like to see in future editions of the newsletter. Furthermore, if you have any questions or concerns regarding the MMHS in general, please feel free to contact us. UPCOMING EVENTS For the 2019 academic year, we will be hosting a variety of events where participants will be given an opportunity to engage with members, while having access to numerous resources. Our first event of the year is the one and only Bioethics Discussion.

THE BIOETHICS DISCUSSION At this event, members will be exposed to fundamental ethical issues that are faced in medicine and healthcare today.

This discussion will consist of both thought provoking and challenging case studies that will allow students to develop their critical thinking skills. This year, we are honoured to welcome back Dr. Philip Hebert, who is a well-renowned physician, professor, and ethicist! In past years, Dr. Herbert was able to facilitate an interactive and open environment, helping students understand key ethical concepts underlying each scenario. We are so pleased that Dr. Herbert can join us again. This is one event you do not want to miss!

RECAP OF 2018 WHAT YOU MIGHT’VE MISSED

THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY On September 25th, the MMHS General Assembly kicked-off the 2018 Fall term. This event provided a platform for general members to socialize and network with their peers, while meeting the MMHS executive team. Additionally, they learned about newly available executive positions; including first year liaisons and a graphic designer. Lastly, the General Assembly informed the attendees about upcoming events for the school year. We were pleased to see an increase in attendees and received a record number of applicants applying for our positions.

THE MEDICAL SCHOOL SYMPOSIUM Also occurring in 2018, we were extremely proud to host the annual Medical School Symposium. The Medical School Symposium has always been a valuable opportunity for students who are interested in knowing about the admission processes for various medical schools in Canada. This year, we were pleased to welcome back admissions officers from the University of Toronto and McMaster University medical schools, to speak at the event. Specifically, Cindy Cao, the International Recruitment and Transition Officer at University of Toronto Medical School, presented attendees with important information regarding both academic and nonacademic admission requirements for their MD program. Moreover, Wendy Edge, the Admissions Coordinator of Michael G. Degroote School of Medicine at McMaster University, highlighted the selection process and key requirements for their MD program. Also from McMaster, Branavan Manoranjan, a candidate of the MD/PhD program, delivered a thorough presentation of his experience with the program, giving members insight regarding differences that exist between the MD program and the MD/PhD program.

ONTARIO PRE-MEDICAL ASSOCIATION PARTNERSHIP We are excited to announce that we have partnered with the Ontario Pre-Medical Association (OPMA). The OPMA is a growing network among fourteen partnering universities in Ontario.

Here, undergraduate students to come together, share and grow with aspiring medical professionals. In addition, the OPMA offers exclusive resources and support for students interested in medicine, such as MCAT® and CASPer® study tips, general undergraduate tips, and a summary sheet on American and Canadian medical school options - all of which are posted on their website. Moreover, the OPMA has also uploaded several new resources that you cannot find anywhere else. For example, resources include clinical observerships, research, and volunteering vs. employment, from renowned individuals in their respective fields.
