SLAIDBURN TO SALTER FELL

Route: 28.1miles / 45.2km Elevation: 2788.7ft / 850m Difficulty: 4 / 5 To view the route go to: komoot.com/tour/429229545

LET’S TAKE A RIDE…

With long days of good weather, summer is the perfect opportunity to head further afield and enjoy a big ride surrounded by spectacular scenery. The route is an out-and-back, traversing Salter Fell along the remains of a Roman road between Clitheroe and Lancaster. By starting in Slaidburn, you cut off most of the tarmac between Clitheroe and Salter Fell. However, it could easily be ridden in reverse or even continued to Lancaster, should you feel adventurous. The first section is a climb all the way onto the top of the fell, so start slowly and find your pace. Don’t go too fast straight out of the blocks, only to blow up before you’ve reached the trail. Starting in Slaidburn car park, turn right onto Chapel Lane, following the road for 2km. Turn right onto Wood House Lane, keeping left after 750m. Approximately 4.5km in, you’ll arrive at the gate that marks the start of the fell. Following the road to the right, the surface will change as modern tarmac gives way to loose and rocky terrain. The climb continues gradually with some steep pitches, so maintain that steady pace. Upon reaching the top, you’ll be rewarded by Morecambe Bay and the Lake District being laid out as far as the eye can see on a clear day. Take some time to admire the view and catch your breath. Continuing along the fell, the trail will gently undulate until you drop down to High Salter Farm, marking the start of tarmac roads again. Continuing along the road, turn right at the T-junction at 18km. Freewheel another 2.8km, turn right at the fork, to reach the midpoint of the ride, the picturesque Wray village. At this point, you can choose between two pubs and a cafe for a wellearned pit-stop. From here, the route is a simple reverse of what you’ve just ridden and you will be surprised how different it is. n

Lockdown has increased the number of dog owners and while traditionally T Forrest supplied trade only this has changed in recent years with them now selling online direct to the public. Daniel says: “People can log onto our website and buy treats for their pet – the site also has lots of information to support dog owners from the right food and treats to things to avoid, along with training tips and advice.”

QUALITY TREATS FOR MAN’S BEST FRIEND

For over 80 years T Forrest have been creating tasty treats for our four-legged companions, writes Gail Bailey. Photography: Kirsten Platt

TForrest is steeped in family tradition and has been trading in Lancashire since 1937: “My great-great-grandma Fanny Wallbank bought the business from Tommy Forrest, and for many years supplied the agricultural industry in and around Blackburn as corn merchants,” explains Head of Business Development Daniel Wallbank.

A family of animal lovers, the business evolved and began manufacturing dog food before moving solely to treats, supplying trade with high quality products, made in their own factory and focusing on nutritional value and health benefits.

T Forrest is still very much family led and holds the original company values close: “Real ingredients and nutritional value are central to what we do,” Daniel says. “We believe owners should know what they are feeding their pet and why, so we list all our ingredients and provide information on the health benefits of each.” The company goes to great lengths to source ingredients locally – continually striving to give your beloved pets nothing but the best.

WE BELIEVE OWNERS SHOULD KNOW WHAT THEY ARE FEEDING THEIR PET AND WHY, SO WE LIST ALL OUR INGREDIENTS AND PROVIDE INFORMATION ON THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF EACH

“We keep it simple,” Daniel explains. “Nature provides all the ingredients for a healthy diet, so we don’t add any fillers to our recipes – just 100 per cent wholesome goodness – and importantly before any of our products leave the building our highly experienced four-legged taste testers ensure nothing leaves without their full seal of approval!”

The company ethos at T Forrest is about a whole team approach and Daniel explains how they all wear many different hats: “We each have our individual roles but start planning and growing our market beyond the UK.”

Our pets are our best friends, our everyday heroes and our loyal companions. They give us their unconditional love and deserve the best care we can provide and the mission at T Forrest is to give them the best nutrition, the finest treats and the highest quality products. n

IN THE SADDLE

Megan Conlon attends Chipping Pony Club’s 2021 Senior Camp, which had something for everyone and was a great success! Photography: Diane Marsden

At 18 years old, I have been to many a camp with Chipping, with my first being way back in 2015 when I was just 12. Ponies have come and gone and the club has evolved over the years. I’ve watched those I was most inspired by grow up and move on and have suddenly found myself at the same age they used to be and in the same position of chatting to the younger members about their ponies. Senior Camp has always been a constant throughout all this – an annual event which is sure to be looked back on as one of the best weeks of the year. This one, with an age range from nine to 25, did not disappoint.

Each day consisted of two rides, varying between flatwork, show jumping, grid work, cross country and even some polocrosse for the younger members! Stable management and earning lots of achievement badges occupied the space between rides, as well as a tasty lunch! Evenings piqued interest with a variety of activities such as an educational talk from Bailey’s Horse Feeds about feeding our horses and even a performance of dressage to music from one of our very own instructors, Gilly, which brought tears to several eyes. Every day was topped off with a scrumptious evening meal and plenty of dancing and singing!

Of course, the heat called for intense water fights and playing in the paddling pool along with table tennis matches and space hopper races!

Once I’d recovered from the tiredness, I looked back on the week with pure happiness, genuinely feeling that it was the best camp I have ever been to. Wherever life takes me and whatever happens in the coming years, I know I’ll always have that week in my back pocket to keep me smiling.

Following on from that excitement, Junior Camp was just around the corner! Two days of learning, improving and having fun for our members aged five to 10! For myself and the other older members this meant trying to get our breath back after running beside the smallest ponies and cheering on the riders while they soared round jumps and had their first taste of mounted games!

It amazes me that after all these years, I can still vividly recall myself at Junior Camp for the first time, having that older member running beside me and I can’t fathom how far I have come since then. These camps really are moments to remember and this year was no different! With a standard that continues to rise year on year, I look forward to future camps with excitement and anticipation. This year I have certainly made memories that will last a lifetime. n

TAKING YORK BY STORM!

Jason Fildes reflects on two fabulous races at York, which saw Highclere’s Royal Patronage successful on day one and Harrow completing the double on day two

There were many happy owners at York as Royal Patronage won the Acomb stakes for Highclere and Mark Johnston under a front running ride from Jason Hart!

Heading to the Knavesmire as the 25/1 outsider of the five runners in the Group 3 £100,000 Tattersalls Acomb Stakes for Royal Patronage went on to win by two-anda-quarter lengths in what was a high class renewal of the race.

This very smart colt has been progressing nicely since arriving at Mark Johnston’s yard and made a very satisfactory debut at York in May over six furlongs behind The Organiser.

On his next outing Royal Patronage headed to Sandown where he ran well to be second before going on to break his maiden tag at Epsom by seven lengths, encouraging Mark to aim him for York.

More than 80 Highclere guests had enjoyed a Taittinger picnic in the sunshine before racing and many of those owners were on hand to welcome Royal Patronage into the winners’ enclosure after his success. After the race Highclere guests were invited by the Chairman to continue the celebrations with more champagne and to watch the replay.

What a win it was – and what an exciting horse to have going forward!

The following day Highclere’s Harrow completed the double at 6-1 with champion jockey Oisin Murphy getting him up in the last strides to beat William Haggas’ Maglev in front of a huge crowd.

Trainer Andrew Balding made a late decision to head to the Knavesmire with Harrow to contest the £70,000 Nursery Handicap – and what a superb call that turned out to be. It made Highclere the leading owners after day two at The Welcome to Yorkshire Ebor Festival with more chances to come.

It was very exciting to be back racing with big crowds and York put on a fabulous event. In my view it’s the best racecourse in the country and a place where Highclere will always want to have winners, especially with the superb prize money on offer!

Roll on next May with the Dante – a potential target for Royal Patronage. n

HOME TRUTHS

At last I can now sense things getting back to normal. We have all suffered incredible constraints in order to combat Covid, and for a while I thought the new restrictions would become normal. Fortunately several events I have been to since ‘Freedom Day’ have smashed that depressing thought. I visited Glorious Goodwood and got my first taste of a full crowd. The sun shone and I was delighted to see so many smiling faces and in the evening the Duke of Richmond had a ball and raised thousands for a great charity helping women back into work. I visited the theatre twice with full cheering audiences to see Anything Goes and The Jersey Boys. I can recommend both – Anything Goes got three standing ovations!

Closer to home I visited the Royal Lancashire Show. This event is definitely back on the Lancashire scene and congratulations to Colin Mustoe and his team that made it possible. I also visited Holmes Mill for their Food Festival, which was very well attended and congratulations to James Warburton and the team for initiating this great weekend of great food and real ale. Then there was The Proms in the Clitheroe Castle bandstand. Despite the awful weather the Slaidburn Silver Band entertained throughout the evening. Only the weather limited the attendance – but next year, weather permitting, it will be back with its usual huge crowd. To complete the sense of normality I attended a wedding with no limits on numbers. It was superb to see the local church packed and a beaming bride and groom, Danielle and Michael Dilworth, celebrating with their family and friends – as it should be! I see that the Ribble Valley has come out top in a survey of places to get married and I am not surprised. Finally, I visited the former Gisburne Park hospital with its owner Guy Hindley. I was thrilled to learn that after the hospital closed in March the Hindley family were able to bring the hall back into family ownership. They have some really ambitious plans which will see a multi-million pound investment on our doorstep – a further boost to our incredible tourism trade. So, while the last 18 months or so have been truly testing and with tragic loss of life, including three friends, there is now so much to be optimistic about. While we know we are going to have to live with this virus, the vaccine and other medical advances means that Covid will not control the way we lead our lives. The thing I have witnessed both in the Ribble Valley and in London since ‘Freedom Day’ is that people are yearning to get their lives back on track. They want to hug their loved ones and they want to celebrate, mix and party again but this time with a new sense of being alive. If you haven’t had the jabs please go to the website and book your appointments. We’ve all tasted the misery of lockdown and there must be no going back! n MP Nigel Evans enjoys a number of events in his Ribble Valley constituency and in London, where he goes to the theatre

COME HOME TO YOUR HIGH STREET.

Preston has missed you!

It may have been a while, but finally we are able to experience some kind of normality once again. But, it’s not over yet. Everyone is still working hard to ensure your visit to Preston is safe as possible, so do your bit by following the guidelines in place and getting your vaccine when eligible. Come home to Preston’s high street and enjoy your shopping spree, eating out with friends or exploring our beautiful parks safely… We have missed you! Come home to your high street safely.

Ihave helped many business owners through their divorces over the years. They have all benefited from seeking legal advice to clarify their position and plan the best way to move forward to ensure the business is protected as far as possible. Here are some things you may wish to consider if you are heading for a divorce.

Consult with experts early

You should seek advice from a divorce lawyer as soon as you have taken the decision to divorce. Your accountant and financial advisor will also play a key part in the process. Seeking advice early will ensure you are aware of what is involved in the divorce process, what you will need to do, identify any possible risks to your business and offer advice on how best to guard against those risks.

Consider the value of your business

Whether you are a sole trader or your business is owned as a partnership or a limited company, it is likely that the value (whether in terms of capital or as an income

NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS

Getting divorced is never easy, but if you’re a business owner too and are looking to protect your livelihood during the divorce process, things can get particularly stressful, explains Antonia Love, Partner at Farleys

producing asset) will be taken into account by the Court. Whilst it is possible for the Court to order a business to be sold, that is most unusual. It is much more likely that the Court will order the non-business owning spouse to have more of the property or cash owned outside of the business and/or order maintenance to be paid than to ‘kill the goose that lays the golden egg’.

Keep a cool head

Unfortunately, by their very nature, divorces can be emotionally taxing, particularly so when you reach the part of negotiating a financial settlement. This can cause arguments and bring out a hard edge to your spouse’s personality, but it is important you keep a cool head and keep sight of the end goal. Channel any frustrations into resolving matters promptly, allowing you to work hard on your business and come out of the other side stronger.

Prioritise

Decide on your desired outcomes at the beginning of the process, for example, the longevity of the business. Once decided, you should be prepared to be flexible on other matters. Keep your main objective in mind and try not to get caught up in arguments over less important things – which, believe me, happens a lot! Consider settling out of court

The Court is dealing with an increasing backlog so where possible you should always strive to settle your finances out of Court. This may also allow a more flexible and creative outcome that is more tailored to you and to your family. Consider a round table meeting to resolve financial matters as soon as possible.

Don’t forget a pre-nuptial agreement

After a divorce, you may not want to rush into another marriage but after time, if you do decide to remarry, I would strongly advise you consider having a prenuptial agreement drawn up. While not legally binding, a pre-nuptial agreement does hold weight in court and can provide peace of mind that your pre-marital assets are preserved. n

Since its opening 50 years ago, Padiham Leisure Centre boasts a new gym, revamped swimming pool, new indoor cycling facilities and a refurbished dance studio. To complement these, a stunning new sauna and health suite will soon be opening.

ESTATE LIFE

Gisburne Park Estate is owned and managed by Guy and Amber Hindley who are converting it into a thriving five-star holiday and spa resort

As a business owner in hospitality the last 18 months have been a rollercoaster. Like everyone else we were shut for eight months but we managed to keep ourselves busy. Some of our accomplishments over that time are as follows:

We managed to redecorate all of our holiday properties and have been fully booked since reopening, we created and operated the first socially distanced music festival during summer 2020, for which we have received extensive, world wide coverage. We have built new teams across the estate, we also renovated Millbridge House which now sleeps 20 people, we opened and operated a Glamping Village, we welcomed over 25,000 people to our Christmas Markets, we invented a ‘drive-in’ Christmas carols and panto but our biggest achievement was buying back our family home, Gisburne Park in May 2021.

In 1986 my father moved our family out of Gisburne Park and converted it into a private hospital, which he then sold in the mid 90s. The business eventually ceased operating in March 2021 which gave Amber and I an opportunity to become the proud owners again. The estate is rich in history and heritage and we look forward to restoring this building and bringing the entire park back to life.

Our ambition is to create a place where guests, local and otherwise, can feel like they have a key to our estate. Whether it’s staying in an exquisitely designed hotel, working out in a club overlooking the River Ribble, enjoying various restaurants, unwinding in a private spa, lazing by the pool, experiencing the various art installations, listening to private concerts in the walled gardens or witnessing the wealth of wildlife around the mansion house and across the parkland. Amber and I endeavour to create an experience to rival the best in the UK and believe the mansion house and surrounding scenery warrants something of this magnitude.

We are thrilled to announce that we have a busy line up of events at Gisburne Park for autumn and winter 2021 starting with various Halloween activities throughout October, a Bonfire Night and Fireworks Extravaganza on 6th November and ending the year with a magical Christmas Market, Light Walk and Santa’s Grotto around the mansion house.

All information will be posted on gisburnepark.com in due course but in the meantime please feel free to register your interest on the website. n

YEAR-ROUND ATTRACTION

Over the summer the grounds of Samlesbury Hall have been transformed in a thrilling project that includes a new community garden alongside a newly created Heritage Café

While the bees at Samlesbury Hall have found a new purpose, the historic hall is still buzzing.

Samlesbury Hall now has a new restaurant – the Heritage Café – located in what was the old bee centre, which is a hive of activity with live jazz, afternoon teas, private dining and a legendary menu featuring locally sourced ingredients from Lancashire. Not to mention the new tapas and platter evenings, starting every Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 5pm to 7pm – the perfect stop off for a bite to eat and, maybe, a cocktail or mocktail?

The café will be open Tuesday through till Sunday and won’t close when weddings are taking place, which means visitors can now enjoy Samlesbury all year round.

Last year Samlesbury Hall began an ambitious plan to transform the grounds of the historic hall making them a year-round attraction, planting new trees, renovating the borders and courtyard gardens and creating a native wildflower meadow, which has been the inspiration for the botanicalthemed Heritage Café, which features wildflower murals and dried-flower artwork across the walls.

Outside the café is a new community garden with a focus on wellbeing. Community groups across the region, along with Lancashire Adult Learning, will present a programme of activities from September, with a view to giving people a sense of belonging.

Courses such as flower arranging, horticulture, mindfulness, tai chi, yoga and meditation will take place in specific areas of the garden with visitors, who are interested in the hall, having the opportunity to

volunteer and become part of this historic gem that has been one of Lancashire’s leading attractions for decades.

Weddings are a big part of Samlesbury Hall – during the pandemic more than 160 weddings were re-scheduled with brides and grooms showing great patience.

co-ordinator, added his skillset to the smooth re-scheduling operation with his calm demeanour, years of experience and his endeavours to build strong relationships with couples, who know their wedding is going to be the best day of their lives.

Couples now have an additional facility for weddings at Samlesbury Hall – the former restaurant, located in the old Billiard Room, has been transformed into a fabulous space where the bridegroom, best man and groomsmen can meet and get ready for the day or even have a game of billiards on the full size table on the morning of their wedding.

Tucked away in the grounds of the hall is The Hamlet, a cluster of luxury shepherd’s huts, which add to the hall’s wedding accommodation offering as well as giving visitors the opportunity of a great all-yearround staycation.

The hall has seen a busy summer at The Hamlet and potential visitors are encouraged to book early for winter staycations – curl up and toast marshmallows by a cosy fire pit

and enjoy the beautiful rural setting, the gorgeous grounds with bee friendly wildlife meadows and a fantastic play area for children with plenty of country walks and activities.

Also within the grounds is Dottie’s Wafflery, which continues to be superpopular with visitors. Serving decadent desserts, from brilliant banoffee waffles to mouth-watering milkshakes, cakes, local ice-cream, speciality teas and coffee, crumpets and scones, the wafflery has become a ‘go-to’ destination in itself.

With the help of grants from the Cultural Recovery Fund, the Samlesbury Hall team has, over the past 18 months, been able to spend time planning this ambitious renovation and recovery project, which has swiftly been implemented.

Located in the perfect position just off Preston New Road, the hall dates back to 1325. Fast forward through the centuries and it is now a major tourist destination that is steeped in history yet has modern-day facilities that cater for 21st century visitors.

The hall’s attractions are many and varied – watch out for the return of the popular Pizza, Prosecco and Peroni Nights when the chefs will cook the most delicious pizzas in the wood-fired oven within the courtyard and experience the new Heritage Café – perfect for popping in for a chilled drink or cocktail, delicious tapas and sharing platters.

With free entry all year round, Samlesbury Hall is a destination that appeals to all generations with its educational and wellbeing activities, its destination café and wafflery, historic tours on Sundays (with the witch or spooky Simon) and the beautiful grounds. Go to the website to check opening times – the hall closes during weddings and private functions, activities, facilities and events. n

Live Magazines’ Tedd Walmsley encourages us to get involved in local politics and policy-making, which shapes our future and that of our children and grandchildren Ihope you enjoyed your summer here in the Ribble Valley or if lucky or brave enough – in warmer climes? It’s been the summer of the staycation and I’d be interested to know how the visitor numbers have been this year here in the valley and whether we’ve missed any opportunities to capitalise on the staycation. Events in the Ribble Valley have been thin on the ground – alongside the cancellation of the Food Festival with no viable alternatives, have been the cancellation of the agricultural shows in Hodder and Longridge. Thank goodness the private sector had the courage to create and execute so well events such as the Royal Lancashire Show and the recent Holmes Mill Food Festival. The Royal Lancashire Show attracted 21,950 over three days despite the weather not being great. But organiser Colin Mustoe was determined it should go ahead, saying: “Many people depend on shows for their living, and it would have been all too easy not to bother. We have to get back to some kind of normality.” I believe there’s a mini food event at the Longridge Showground this weekend which has had little, or no support from the council. Historically this type of event has been vital in driving footfall to local businesses and I implore Ribble Valley Borough Council to crack on, get involved and announce, before it’s too late, a calendar of events for 2022.

Irecently visited the wonderful Blueberries café on Market Street, Clitheroe – a regular haunt to meet friends and clients and always good food and service I might add. On my last visit I couldn’t help but think that the only thing missing was a spluttering tuk-tuk and a few cows roaming free to make a comparison to Mumbai. The roads and pavements are truly a disgrace and hardly helpful to the aesthetics of our flagship market town of Clitheroe. However, all is not lost. A recent conversation with County Councillor Sue Hind, revealed she has gone into battle with LCC to get match funding for a programme of road and pavement improvements with a pre-Christmas start date. I will watch with intrigue as to the extent of these improvements and the impact on our town and report back.

Can you believe it’s more than 30 years since any capital projects have been completed in the Ribble Valley – me neither. I’m hearing lots of talk and gossip about projects ranging from swimming pools to a crematorium. My former boss at the Daily Telegraph used to say, ‘Be judged by your deeds and not rhetoric.’ Let’s see what happens – but suffice to say I’m not holding my breath! As I write these columns and discuss the content with a host of people, I’m struck with how little is known about the processes within the borough and county council. I had a few people bemoan the condition of roundabouts on the A59 – ugly, dangerous and hazardous were some of the adjectives used. There were others that can’t be published. LCC finally mowed them and the verges to within an inch of their lives but what happened to the beautiful wildflowers of just a few years back? Who IS responsible, and how can we lobby our county councillors, recently elected, if we don’t like what we see?

We must be more vocal and more interested in local politics and also the officers who are responsible for putting into practice the policies

decided upon. Just last week there were two local by-elections in the Ribble Valley – the turnout to vote was a staggering 17 per cent – truly appalling in my humble opinion. Policies and decisions shape not just our futures but those of our children and grandchildren – they are in our hands not just those of the council. I think it’s only fair after three of my articles that we give RVBC a chance to reply so I intend to ask the leader if he’d like to write his own article in October to update and excite us with future plans for the Ribble Valley. Please feel free to contact me if any of the above, or indeed any other topics, interest you and would benefit and educate our readers. Until October be kind to each other and support all that is local. n

Royal Lancashire Show 2022: 22nd, 23rd and 24th July

The views above are my own and I’d be delighted to get some replies to my questions and report back on any progress and positive outcomes tedd.walmsley@live-magazines.co.uk TM @TeddWalmsley

WEDDING HEAVEN

Recently featuring in the Sunday Times, the Ribble Valley has been pinpointed as the country’s wedding capital

For those of us who live and work in the Ribble Valley it comes as no surprise to read in the national press that this rural idyll has become England’s ‘wedding heaven’.

Featuring in the Sunday Times, it has become apparent that we have a higher rate of enthusiastic marriers in this picturesque part of the world. A report by the Office for National Statistics, published recently, identified Clitheroe as one of only six areas in England and Wales that increased its proportion of married residents over a 50-year period – in fact out of the six, it was Clitheroe’s numbers that increased most sharply.

It would appear that while the beautiful rolling countryside and scenic landscapes play some part in couples’ eagerness to get married here, it is the sheer number of beautiful wedding venues within just a few square miles, that inspires locals to tie-the-knot at above-average rate.

Interviewing local wedding specialists including bridal boutique owner Liz Metcalfe, the Flower Shop’s Jim Hardman and Simon Barnes of Bashall Barn, the Sunday Times reported that the weddings industry was booming in the Ribble Valley with suppliers and services, swamped with orders and bookings.

Following the easing of lockdown wedding rules, there is a backlog of couples eager to get hitched in this picturesque part of the world and while some agreed to a ‘microwedding’ with reduced numbers, most have postponed and have booked for 2022 or 2023 with some venues starting to see bookings for 2024.

Here in the Ribble Valley we have traditional and contemporary venues, and we are most definitely spoilt for choice. Couples can choose to marry in a marquee set on the riverside on an impressive country estate, they have the option to tie the knot in converted barns that have been transformed into wedding-specific venues in beautiful, rural locations or they may opt for a smaller boutique venue. At the opposite end of the scale, we also have a good number of grand country houses set amidst rolling Ribble Valley countryside. Wherever they choose to marry, couples can be assured that the occasion will be made all the more memorable by the stunning location. n

OUTDOOR WEDDING CEREMONIES:

THE NATURAL CHOICE

It’s definitely a happy marriage of ‘something old, something new’ at Browsholme Hall, writes Kate Bowyer, who takes a look at the hall’s beautiful wedding venues

Ijoined co-owner of Browsholme Hall, Amanda Parker, for a tour around the 16th-century hall’s new romantic garden locations and woodland idylls, which have been created to benefit from the government’s recent extension of marriage licences to outdoor venues.

“Before 2020, outdoor weddings were a beautiful rarity,” says Amanda, demonstrating the genuine enthusiasm with which she clearly loves sharing one of England’s longest-occupied family homes with couples and their guests.

Browsholme’s ancient Tithe Barn, sympathetically converted into a stone-flagged romantic venue by Amanda and husband Robert in 2009, was already top of many a bride’s wish-list. Others fell for the hall’s silk-draped Regency drawing room, or a recent addition, the Cart Shed, an intimate venue for smaller, rustic celebrations.

Then, of course, came Covid. When restrictions began to lift, recounts Amanda: “People started enquiring about outdoor weddings. It made such sense – wellventilated, room to relax, no intrusive masks. We started hosting more receptions outside and it made us look at Browsholme’s beautiful landscapes in a new light.”

The transformative moment came in July 2021, permitting licensed venues like Browsholme to hold full weddings or civil partnership services in any suitable outdoor location.

Amanda and Robert’s lockdown epiphany has resulted in a veritable bouquet of picturesque outdoor settings, like our first stop, a sheltered Italian

PEOPLE STARTED ENQUIRING ABOUT OUTDOOR WEDDINGS. IT MADE SUCH SENSE

parterre, set next to the East Wing of the hall. It’s all too easy to imagine the bridal train casting beautiful shadows down the stone steps, framed by low walls, perfect for informal after-ceremony socialising for up to 80 guests.

“It is a beautiful spot,” agrees Amanda as I allow myself to be led, reluctantly, onwards. “But this is my current favourite – it changes every week!” She leads me to an Edwardian water garden, charmingly twining in informal pockets around a small pond, hosting 60 guests. “It’s that bit more intimate and relaxed, like a secret hideaway,” confirms Amanda. Enclosed by lush rhododendrons and azaleas, a brook babbles musically in the background. It is pure romance in bloom.

In contrast, our third stop is pure breath-taking elegance, the hall’s sweeping front lawn having the added bonus of almost no limit on numbers – the perfect way to banish nightmares of whittling the guest list to 30! The pedimented arch adjoining the entrance lodge, built in 1805 as an eye-catcher, would make the perfect backdrop for my imaginary wedding photographs, as would the manorial hall in the other direction – so many choices!

These new backdrops join the rustic pavilion crafted from the estate’s own 200-year-old oaks, nestled under flower banks in the newly landscaped Lily Pond Garden, and the idyllic Lonesome Pine forest clearing, ideal for that eco-centred, or Tolkien-inspired ceremony.

And if the weather turns, I suspect the ever-practical Amanda and her team have it covered? “Literally!” she nods. “Plan B means we have the wonderful Tithe Barn to move an outside ceremony into at very short notice, or many people take advantage of splitting the day part out and part in. Eyes to the forecast, we usually make the final decision the night before, but I have been known to shepherd everyone inside at the last minute!

“And the other way round – one day, the weather was so amazing, I persuaded an initially hesitant couple outside. With the gardens in full bloom, it took their moment to a new level. They were over the moon, so glad they had done it, and all the guests agreed.

“Being in nature takes a significant occasion to a new level, I think, and that’s definitely what discerning couples are starting to seek out – the natural backdrop, sounds, scents, softness and drama making it even more magical and unique. People seem more relaxed, and of course have fewer Covid limitations on their special day.”

Coming sadly to the end of my ‘borrowed’ time, I can only agree, having already decided my ‘something blue’ should definitely now be ‘something green’. n
