For Your Information
Janet’s Worries Track 01
5
10
Almost all teenagers have skin issues. This is because, at this stage of life, special hormones in the body are produced. As a result, many suffer from itchiness1 and redness. Take Janet, having serious pimple problems, for example. She started to get acne on her forehead2 two years ago. Within a couple of months, almost every inch of her skin — her cheeks, arms, and back — had been taken over by acne. As this problem worsened, Janet came to feel ashamed of3 her appearance4. Janet never thought of asking a dermatologist5 for advice. Instead, she looked

through the skin-care products that her mother used. Janet’s mother’s skin wasn’t oily but dry, so most of her skin-care products emphasized6 moisturizing. Janet tried different bottles of cream and put on a thick layer of makeup, hoping this would hide her flaws7. But the acne on her face irritated8 her even more. Finally, Janet’s mother decided to take her to see a dermatologist.

The dermatologist asked Janet to fill out9 a form. The form had questions, such as whether her skin felt comfortable, dry, or tight, whether her skin was shiny, what conditions her skin was usually exposed to, what her skin tone10 was, and so on. Doubting11 these questions were going to help, Janet asked him about the purpose12 of the form. The dermatologist answered that it was just a part of the skin analysis — the process of understanding the condition of one’s skin.

After the skin analysis, the dermatologist told Janet that her problem was just a stage that her skin was going through, and that rushing the treatment would not make her skin heal. The doctor said only proper care, with time and patience13, would fix the problem. He also suggested that she eat more fruit and vegetables, and less junk food. Then, he prescribed14 some medicine and showed Janet how to choose skin-care products suitable for her age and skin condition. Gradually, with the right attitude towards skin care, Janet’s skin improved.
