Introduction Welcome to Spotlight—Guiding You to English Proficiency. This is the first book in a series created to propel learners toward fluency. Outstanding English skills will open up doors for anyone in today’s world. No matter how out of reach a student’s learning goals seem to be, the Spotlight series will provide the boost he or she needs.
Each unit of Spotlight Book 1 follows a set structure designed to push students to expand their skills. The unit begins with a Vocabulary Builder section, which utilizes both audio and visual methods to introduce words related to the topic. Students will move on to a video clip in which actors use new vocabulary words, grammar points, and expressions in real-life situations. They will listen along and later be tested for comprehension. Afterwards, they’re prompted to put freshly learned vocabulary and language skills to use in a series of review exercises. The unit ends with a related article and an opportunity for students to polish up their writing skills.
As students progress through each level, they are constantly encouraged to put what they have learned to use. At the same time, they never stop taking on new challenges to help themselves reach the next benchmark in the learning process. By facilitating students to develop a hunger for advancement, Spotlight proves that the sky is the limit for today’s learners.

n 2005, three friends, including TaiwaneseAmerican Steve Chen, created YouTube. Today, it is the biggest video Web site in the world. Anybody can post videos on it and have an opportunity to become famous. Justin Bieber is a great example. He was a regular teenager from a poor family in Canada. In 2008, his mother put his singing video on YouTube. A producer saw it. He decided to help Justin record an album. Now, Justin Bieber is a superstar thanks to YouTube. The site lets us visit places far away. We can sit at home and watch a video of an African dance group or a Brazilian soccer player. YouTube is more than just a Web site. It’s a video universe!
• Seventy percent of users come from outside the US. • You would need more than 1,000 years to watch all the videos on YouTube.
