WHO WE ARE

FringeArts is Philadelphia’s home for contemporary performance, presenting progressive, world-class art that expands the imagination and boldly defies expectations.

FringeArts was founded in 1997 as the Philadelphia Fringe Festival, with the intention of providing opportunities for contemporary performing artists to connect with audiences in an exciting social environment. The first Festival took over Philadelphia’s Old City for five days, and featured 60 performing groups that presented their work in theaters, nightclubs, galleries, alleys, abandoned buildings and at least one parked car.

FringeArts continues to present the Fringe Festival each September. Today, Philly Fringe is a 4-week celebration that fills the city’s neighborhoods with more than 1,000 performances by national, international and Philadelphia-based artists of all disciplines.

Year-round, FringeArts presents an equally compelling line up of performances at its stateof-the-art venue on the Delaware River Waterfront—a renovated historic pumping station. The FringeArts campus features an adaptable theater space that can be reconfigured for numerous experiences and can accommodate seating for up to 300 guests; a multipurpose studio space; our partner restaurant, Fringe Bar, and the Haas Biergarten.

As the city’s lead experimenter in the arts, FringeArts exposes audiences to unpredictable dance, theater and music performances by accomplished and emerging innovators who are pushing the boundaries of art-making and redefining the artistic landscape worldwide.

FRINGEARTS 2024 CELEBRATING A LEGACY

In 2024, FringeArts bid farewell to Founder Nick Stuccio and welcomed CEO & Producing Director, Nell-Bang Jensen.

In this transitional year, FringeArts looked back on 27 incredible years of the Philadelphia Fringe Festival, while looking forward to our next chapter.

On October 15th, following a nation-wide search, we welcomed new CEO & Producing Director, Nell Bang-Jensen! Bang-Jensen, who has directed and created theater in Philadelphia and at FringeArts for the past fourteen years, joins the organization after a successful tenure as Artistic Director at Theatre Horizon in Norristown.

At a time where there is less and less support for artistic risk, it’s imperative to recognize FringeArts for the gem that it is and the potential it has to continue to put our city on the map. I’m honored to keep building on this legacy to make FringeArts a space where local, national, and international artists are celebrated, and everyone’s invited. Nell Bang-Jensen

2024 PHILADELPHIA FRINGE FESTIVAL

The Philadelphia Fringe Festival puts worldclass local artists in conversation with their national and international peers on Philadelphia stages.

Beloved local companies and longtime FringeArts partners like Pig Iron Theatre Company, Nichole Canuso Dance Company, and Lightning Rod Special were presented alongside national and international Philly Fringe mainstays including Elevator Repair Service, Reggie Wilson, and Trajal Harrell.

A cast of 8 local choir singers (Geovanni Diaz, Veonous Jacques, Malcolm Richardson, Shakira Jackson, Katy Avery, Ben Perri, Brandi McLeod, Deanda Wilson) performed in the project.
