From the Publisher

I hope this Holiday Season has been a joyful time of year for one and all. I know from experience the days leading up to the Big Day can be “A cup of stress served with two parts relief” when we get to December 26. My recipe for today, fix yourself a spot-o-tea, a cup of coffee, or your favorite morning after drink, and enjoy this very special issue of “Links & Libations-Luxury Travel Magazine”. We have been thrilled to put this

issue together over the past three weeks and complete it this morning, that’s right, this morning. We have been working on creating a “live replay interview” link in some of our stories.

In this issue you will find “live links” to many elements:

• “Master Chef Dave Trevelino Interview”, completed this morning live from Honolulu, Hawaii. He will be reporting on cooking for and serving the Navy on the USS Chicago and USS Mississippi on Christmas Day; and planning for his New Year’s meal on the USS Missouri. “World Class Photographer Daniel • Sullivan”,” from Maui, Hawaii and a look at footage of his most recent photography tours and links to his store in Paia, Hawaii • “The Distillery Channel Interviews” with owners and state leaders of breweries, wineries and distilleries across the Nation. • “#inviteHER – Miss Kira’s First Putting Lesson” and how it changed her perspective on golf.

Plus, our regular features and what we do best in finding the most incredible pictures in which to lose yourself during your early morning “day-after recovery”. So, sit back, enjoy and dream while savoring a “spot-o-time-for-yourself”. Breathe!!! This could be the only quiet time of your day. Cheers, Randy Weckerly Publisher

Chef Dave Trevelino Story By: Randy Weckerly

Links & Libations

Master Chef, Dave Trevelino, of The

Tournament Players Club (TPC) Potomac at Avenel Farms, Potomac, Maryland, well, I should stop there; because there are no words that could adequately describe this remarkable chef, a true gentleman, a great father, a loving husband of wife, Linda, and a passionate patriot of the United State of America. How does one properly describe what he has accomplished in serving the sailors of the United States Navy? I feel honored to be able to write about our experiences since meeting Chef Dave this past August.

The TPC Potomac members support

Executive Chef Dave every year to feed the sailors. This began during his trip to Guam in 2014 and continues through this year and his trip to Honolulu, Hawaii. We experienced the love the Members of TPC Potomac have for Chef Dave, during an evening fund raiser, for feeding the Sailors stationed in Hawaii, during this Christmas and New Year’s Season.

Chef Dave served the sailors on board

the nuclear submarines USS Chicago and USS Mississippi on Christmas Day. The planning begins a year in advance of every trip. His idea to feed the sailors and venture to Guam began in 2014, as a holiday visit to his son Andrew, who was serving in the Navy in Guam. It has grown to an annual event serving sailors in port, in Hawaii. His family, son Andrew and wife Linda, developed this idea, and Andrew asked his dad to cook aboard the USS Chicago.

A little history: Andrew volunteered

for submarine duty and became a culinary specialist on the USS Chicago after enlisting in the Navy in 2013. Dad, Chef Dave and son Andrew cooking on the USS Chicago has repeated every year since 2014. Even though members of the TPC Potomac lose their Master Chef during the holidays, they support him with passion, understanding, financially and in spirit.

We met with Dave first thing in the

morning of the 14th. He was lamenting that his day started with added stress about finding additional money, he now needed, to complete the catering contract for serving Christmas dinner on the USS Missouri. This year he included family members of the sailors, and using real china, not plastic ware plates for the meal. This added to his costs.

We were worried about our friend

On November 14th, 2018, Kira

Peterson, our Vice President of Marketing, “Links & Libations- Luxury Travel Magazine” and yours truly, attended an evening of fundraising and love served up in large portions at the TPC Potomac at Avenal Farms. We admired how the membership of one of the Nation’s most respected clubs, loved and supported Dave, in this effort to feed sailors at Christmas. The dining room was trimmed in red, white and blue, and decorated with a huge banner signed by members of the USS Chicago from past years’ events.

Dave; we had gotten to know him in the past weeks, with our split screen features of “Crazy Chef Dave Specials” every Friday on our “Links & Libations Magazine Facebook Page”. However, by the look in Chef Dave’s eyes, we knew he was determined to get the job done for this year’s events.

13

So, drum roll please. This leads us up

to a new adventure in “Links & LibationsLuxury Travel Magazine” reporting. We decided to attempt to have Dave complete two interviews during this week. One interview prior to the event and one, today, December 26. This is quite an experiment. We hope you enjoy this new and adventurous reporting in a “magazine”. So, let’s see what happens.

The evening began with a silent

auction, on multiple tables holding sports memorabilia, signed and authenticated items of legends, a spectacular weekend couple’s getaway vacation package, but most importantly the open wallets of the membership. The membership could bid at silent auction for the items they desired to purchase.

Report Prior to the Event December 19th: Click Here For Menu to Be Served. Report Today December 26th: Click Here For Report on the Christmas Day Meal.

In the end, the food, of course, was great, the membership kind and generous raising a total of over $75,000.00. Remarkably, Chef Dave, reported that this was about the exact amount needed for this year.

If you would like to help Chef Dave

in this cause for coming years, let us know.

We have heard Chef Dave’s plans for

next year, and all I can tell you at this point, as it is under a secret code of silence, next year will be spectacular and growing in stature.

Italy’s Allegrini Estates: The Star of Valpoliceela Wines By: Scott Kendall

Their passion is making great wines.

The locale is the picturesque Veneto, the storied home of Valpolicella, the “valley of many cellars.” Near Verona in northeastern Italy, Allegrini has garnered many awards, including being named by Gambero Rosso as 2016 Winery of the Year.

The legacy of Allegrini has been

nurtured by six generations of winegrowing expertise. The family has made innovative and consistent improvements in preparing the soil, growing the vines, and producing the best wines through the centuries. On my trip to this wine wonderland, the pride and passion was very evident, from the manicured vineyards, to the opulent showcase of Palazzo della Torre, and most certainly, in the fantastic wines we sampled.

Proof of their success lies in some

of the best wines in the world, including their world renowned Amarone. Made with grapes that have partially dried in the process of turning into raisins (but not raisins yet), Allegrini’s Amarone della Valpolicella Classico is a pleasant addition to any celebration. This Amarone is deep ruby red in color, with aromas of raisins, spices, black cherries, and mocha. On the palate, the wine is smooth and velvety, and has a full bodied, long finish.

And although some of the wines are

rather expensive, Allegrini also produces more affordable wines, like its Palazzo della Torre, the most awarded red wine in the world under $25. After trying the Palazzo della Torre several times, I can tell why it has received so many awards - it is now one of my favorite go to reds.

The current generation of Allegrinis,

children of Giovanni Allegrini, the patriarch of the modern estate, take great pride in carrying out the wine making traditions of the family. Led by Marilisa and her brother, Franco, the new wave of Allegrinis carry on the age old methods of creating some of the world’s best wines.

Links & Libations

Fortunately, the main estate, Palazzo

della Torre, is open to the public for tasting, touring, and special events. The lovely grounds, the intriguing architecture, and various rooms make Palazzo della Torre a great place to host weddings, business functions, family get

23

The Wine Advocate has stated that Allegrini’s Amarone is “the reference point for fine Amarone.” In addition, Allegrini has won 18 coveted Tre Bicchieri (“Three Glasses”) awards from Gambero Rosso for its Amarone. Also receiving admirable praise is their Palazzo della Torre, consistently named to Wine Spectator’s Top 100 list for red wines priced under $25.

Art and Fantasy

Allegrini has seven distinct vineyards,

each with its own personality, soils, and focused microclimate. The winery is known for its cru production, wherein each vineyard produces a grape used for a single wine. For example, vineyards from the steep hillsides of La Grola, and the vineyards from the perfect plateau of La Poja, each produce grapes grown exclusively for those wines, and have set the highest benchmarks for Valpolicella’s products.

Awards In addition to being named Winery of

the Year by the highly acclaimed magazine Gambero Rosso, Allegrini has received many awards for its wines.

Decorated wine bottles, gift boxes, and

whimsical fireplaces all add to the intrigue and mystique of Allegrini. Some of the finest national and international artists have contributed to the artwork and design for wine labels and gift boxes, especially for the La Grola line. One of my favorites is the bird and wildlife scenes on the La Grola Limited Edition 2014 - a fantastic wine in a beautiful container.

24

Links & Libations

The famous fireplaces of Villa della

Torre, tributes to the force and beauty of fire, are a delight to see when touring the villa. Whimsical gargoyle like faces of monsters, angels and lions adorn the fireplaces, and tell stories only limited by our imaginations.

Another fascinating room is the

Tempietto, or small temple. This charming Renaissance chapel was most likely designed by Michele Sanmicheli, the famous architect from Verona. It is a unique circular shaped church, located in a somewhat separated corner of the villa. The beautiful artistic significance of the structure is complemented by a perfectly preserved bell tower that gives the entire complex an extraordinary, theater-like scenic effect. The chapel is a popular place for weddings and other religious functions.

Links & Libations

With the fireplaces giving tribute

to the power and force of fire, the Fish Pond is a reminder of the reverence locals have for the importance of water. Water is a true life-giving force to satisfy thirst, to feed the vineyards, and to provide for the irrigation needs of the gardens, lawns, and flower beds. Water is also needed to enthrall visitors with the marvelous fountains on the grounds.

A trip to Allegrini’s Palazzo della

Torre makes for a fun filled, interesting, and educational experience. Among the many options for visitors are guided tours of the complex, wine tastings, and tours of the vineyards and vegetable gardens

25

For those wishing to experience local agri-foods and wines together in an intimate setting at the villa, there are also cooking classes and the Rinascimento Food and Wine event, by reservation only.

Over the centuries, The Allegrinis

have learned their lessons well. Come see how the latest generation of Allegrinis are proudly carrying on the family traditions. The wine, the arts, the architecture, and the beautiful rolling hills of the Valpolicella are sure to impress.

Look At the Pictures, Enough Said! Well maybe a little information to go

along with the jaw dropping pictures I am sure you just browsed through before reading my ill attempt in describing what you are viewing.

I met master photographer Daniel

Sullivan in 2014 during my cultural research trip to Maui. I had read about his work and pictorials in his book “The Maui Coast: Legacy of the Kings Highway”. Daniel is located in Paia, Maui, Hawaii and doing business in his store, “Indigo Paia”.

When you first enter this quaint

facility, Daniel can usually be found behind the desk, on the phone or simply working with his visitors. The one overriding characteristic of Daniel is his peaceful nature and caring personality. He is one you want to spend time with, to get to know, to grow and to be more like in capturing his inner peace.

When you look through his offerings

in his store, one finds jewelry, rugs imported from Afghanistan, eclectic fashions and his brilliant photography hanging from the walls. Of course, one spends time a majority of time looking at these photos as they come from all over the world.

In this issue, we are featuring Daniel’s

Maui photos. In future issues we will be unfolding his world travel and cultural endeavors. As you will learn, Daniel is mindful of our place on Earth and multiple Cultures.

Daniel Sullivan- “I photograph

the patterns of ancient culture through the beauty of their customs, rituals and ceremonies. As the integrated fabrics of human intelligence, we call culture continue to disappear, I photograph the essence of spirit of these ancient

I was captivated by Daniel’s

photography and research of “The Kings Highway” on Maui. Daniel spent a good deal of time walking, studying and taking photos along the way. In fact, if you asked him, he forgot to take enough water along the way for his own consumption, and even on Maui, that can become a problem.

Daniel Sullivan- “Long

forgotten in modern times Maui’s Kings Highway was the first Hawaiian road to circumnavigate an entire island.” Daniel invested three years hiking and

documenting the last remaining stretches of this 16th century wonder. If you sign up for one of Daniel’s custom designed photography tours, you can see the relics of ancient Hawaiian culture and walk the Kings Highway while learning valuable photography tips along the way.

I immediately asked Daniel about

joining him on the trail and attempting to learn from him how to photograph Maui while learning more about my own camera equipment and his knowledge of Maui. He explained we could design multiple adventures in photography on the island as he does for all of his photography tour clients.

I picked up one of his brochures as

any tourist would do and began reading what follows to make my choice and evaluate how I wanted to spend time with Daniel.

The Brochure Explained: “The

landscape on Maui is extremely diverse and like nothing else on the planet. One could photograph turtles on the beach, massive waterfalls, taro patches, and the vestiges of ancient Hawaii. From the crashing waves of Jaws to the summit of Haleakala, capture stunning images in the field and hone your skills alongside master photographer Daniel Sullivan, in a once in a life time photography expedition.”

Links & Libations

I realized on my trip in 2014 I would

not have time to take advantage of this offer. However, I kept in touch with Daniel on Facebook over the years and chatted by phone. Daniel was kind enough to work with me on his newest Maui collection. Needless to say when we received them last week, we were blown away by their unique power and awesome beauty.

“How does he do that?” was

the cry around our desk. Amazing photos abound, and we decided to add more pages to this issue while asking Daniel to send more as soon as possible.

37

Daniel moved to Maui in 2004 with

his wife CaraMiya and three children, while enjoying the Maui culture and environment every day. Daniel and I agree that if you want to live on Maui, one has to want to embrace the culture. I have traveled to Maui multiple times since 1978. It has changed and grown as air travel became more proficient. One has to learn to embrace the history of the people to understand you’re amidst one of the most isolated destinations on Earth but with a rich history and loving people.

“I Never Played GolfNobody Asked” #inviteHER By Randy Weckerly and Kira Peterson

57

58

Links & Libations

The LPGA announced on August 28,

2018 a new initiative, #inviteHER, to support and grow the game of golf. Miss Kira and I were researching our “Happy Hour Golf Show” and came upon this press release from Ms. Nadia Allem, who is in charge of Global Business Development for the LPGA:

“Today, We Are Golf and the LPGA will launch a new industry-wide campaign tagged #inviteHER aimed at golfers to empower the women in their lives and invite them to join the game She belongs in the game. #inviteHER is not intended to be a one-and-done campaign, but rather a lasting rallying cry to encourage more women to play golf. The campaign has the support of We Are Golf which includes the PGA Tour, PGA of America, the USGA and other major golf organizations.”

We immediately called Ms. Allem and

asked if she would like to come on air to tell our audience about this new initiative. Never did we expect that #inviteHER would change the life of our Miss Kira.

Miss Kira, Vice President of Marketing

for our magazine had never been exposed to golf. Her resume contains photography, marketing, dance and snowboarding as her passions in life. When joining “Links & Libations- Luxury Travel Magazine” she had no reference in golf to the point of never even having held a golf club.

Miss Kira was the perfect candidate

for an invitation to my lifelong passion, golf. In my teaching days, more women than men signed up for lessons, so I knew this was a great initiative the LPGA had created. In the days that followed, I asked Miss Kira if she would like to experience her first golf lesson. With great enthusiasm we ventured to the putting green at my golf course, Geneva National, Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. It was a five-minute walk to the practice putting green.

My point is this. In the past 18

months I had never thought about asking Miss Kira if she would even like to golf, or simply go to the driving range. We had great fun her first day, as it was quite obvious Miss Kira was a natural with the basics of grip, stance and posture. However, golf delivered as expected, a lot of laughs and fun along the way.

Links & Libations

59

Here is the link to that first lesson: “Miss Kira Putting Lesson”. Miss Kira wanted to learn more; and

asked if we could film every lesson, I was to give her. We went back to our office and strategized. Miss Kira’s life has never been the same. We created “#missKira 18+1 Steps Into Golf”, an 18-part series with the basic elements, for a pure novice, to learn how to engage in the world of golf.

As the above press release states in

short, “Empower – Belong – Encourage” by inviting women to golf. It’s just that simple. For Miss Kira, it has been life changing. We phoned Ms. Allem in October and relayed how we felt it would be fun to create the “Miss Kira18+1 Steps Into Golf” initiative. Ms. Allem agreed, and shared it with her team at the LPGA. Nadia showed us how we could be supported on the www.lpgawomensnetwork.com by telling the Miss Kira story from our social media uploads.

Ms. Allem was truly excited about

working with Miss Kira. Miss Kira was truly excited about learning more about golf, travel and business related to golf. In our conversation with Nadia, Miss Kira was extended the invitation to any LPGA event worldwide. Nadia had no idea the impact that conversation and invitation would have such a major impact on Miss Kira. It changed her life.

In the days and weeks following “Miss

Kira 18+1 Steps into Golf” began. We covered “Find a Mentor”, “Finding Golf Clubs”, “The Guard House”, and “What to Wear” to begin this ongoing series. It became apparent Miss Kira would adapt and grow into the game of golf. What followed was even more amazing.

60

Links & Libations

Miss Kira was invited to the “TPC

Potomac at Avenel Farms” country club by Master Chef Dave Trevelino. Chef Dave was holding a fund raiser for his feeding the sailors of our Nuclear Submarines, USS Chicago and USS Mississippi this coming December 25 in Honolulu, Hawaii. We had been featuring Chef Dave on a weekly split screen series, “Crazy Chef Dave Thursday Night Special”. Miss Kira was, as she said, “All over it!”, in going to visit Chef Dave on November 14 of this year. What a great evening ensued, and Miss Kira was right at home during this event.

Now the interesting about that was

not that Chef Dave Trevelino had a successful evening, but that in such a short period of time, August 28 #inviteHER initiative announcement to November 15, a simple “#inviteHER” had changed Miss Kira’s life. Golf was now in her blood. She felt comfortable knowing people in golf are some of the most giving and kind people on the planet. She and Chef Dave are now great friends.

Links & Libations

I never would have invited Miss Kira

to enter the world of golf, take a putting lesson or probably even play. But I must confess, it is wonderful to watch her grow and be entertained by the game. Miss Kira even ventured to my home to watch “Tiger vs Phil” play their match; she now sits in on our “Happy Hour Golf Show” as a commentator; she watches golf on her own; and she now knows who most of the players are on both the PGA and LPGA.

61

#inviteHER is an initiative. So,

help grow the game and empower someone close to you. Ask someone in your life who has never played, “Hey, you want to learn golf, have some fun, join me?” In a very simple way, you can change her life as it did Miss Kira’s.

By the way, people always ask, “What

is the +1”. Well, for those new to the game, it is called the 19th hole. The place after a round of golf, where we go to “Celebrate Life”with a “Sip or Two”. Cheers!

ROVOS RAIL: A Dream Journey on The Pride of Africa from Cape Town to Johannesburg By Elsa Dixon

A live violin and guitar duo were playing soft background music, while the wait staff replenished glasses and offered other beverages and canapes. shook hands and waved us on to be escorted to Platform 23 where The Pride of Africa was waiting. His intention had originally been to buy a coach or two at an auction and after restoring them, hook them on to a train for the family to holiday in. However, the idea of running a vintage train as a business took hold, and so, ROVOS RAIL was born. Rohan gradually built up his stock of authentic old rail cars, modernized and refurbished them. His family is closely involved in the enterprise, and the locomotives are all named after his children. ROVOS RAIL is now “The most

As one stepped in through the door, one was immediately enveloped in an aura of luxury: wood-paneled walls, soft diamond-patterned green carpeting, and a bed stretching the full width of the berth, covered by a heavy tapestried bedspread. On sliding open the dark wooden shutters, I noticed a springbuck head emblem burnt into the glass window, a trademark of South African Railways, and the country’s national animal. Settling into one of the two comfortable padded chairs next to a small table harboring a mini-fridge stocked with champagne, water, and milk, I took in the suite: a telephone and plenty of outlets mounted on the wall, an air-conditioning unit, and a Facilities and Safety Folder with detailed information. A beautifully crafted coffee-table book on the history of Rovos Rail, was on display, a gift to all passengers. The drawer below the fridge contained a coffee and tea chest, a kettle for boiling water, and a welcome punnet of home-made cookies. Looking into the ensuite bathroom, complete with hand-basin, toilet and glass door shower, I found the technology for a hair-dryer and shaving plug, heated rack and heater above the bathroom door.

Three Days from Cape to Pretoria On the first day, the train pulled out

of Cape Town’s station soon after 11:00 am, Table Mountain and Devil’s Peak disappearing from view. We passed through the northern suburbs where rows of taxis lined the railway stations. Then it was on through small holdings and wheat farmlands, until we entered the rolling green vineyards of the Western Cape’s wine country, surrounded by impressive mountain ranges.

Paarl, the third oldest city in South

Africa, set against the Paarl rock mountain and shaped like a pearl, became visible through a forest of bright purple flowering Jacaranda trees. We stopped briefly at Worcester in the Hex River Valley before climbing up the face of the mountain and through four tunnels, one of them 8.4 miles long.

The topography changed to vistas of

long yellow grass and umbrella-like thorn trees until we reached the desolate semi-desert Karoo.

On the second day, we passed through Beaufort West where Christian Barnard, who performed the world’s first heart transplant, was born. The Karoo bush has an overpowering smell of herbs, and many believe in its medicinal powers. That is also the reason why the succulent Karoo lamb has such a distinctive flavor. Through the glass windows of the observation car, we could see cattle, karakul sheep with their black heads, ostrich, the odd big hairy grey baboon, springbuck, blesbuck, and even a few giraffes.

On the third day, we headed

northeast, chugging past neglected railway stations and abandoned houses, and blocks of state-funded homes with electricity poles and antennas silhouetted against the sun.

The train meandered alongside the N3 tarred road which is also called the Treasure Route, since it links Kimberley, the Diamond City, to Johannesburg, the City of Gold.

At night, the very comfortable bed,

the rhythmic click-clack of the rails and the swaying of the coach lulled me to sleep, and not even sudden stops or jerks could wake me up.

Elegant Dining ROVOS transports one to an era of

elegance and grace. There is no Wi-Fi on the train and cell phones are not permitted in the dining and lounge cars.

73

Guests were mostly from the United Kingdom, United States, and a sprinkling of other European countries. Soon, however, all were mixing happily, recounting tales of safari and other adventures, as well as enthusiastically anticipating future destinations.

74

Links & Libations

It was quite enchanting to dress up for

dinner in the evening, creating an opulent atmosphere reminiscent of bygone Victorian times. Smoking jackets and bow-ties are provided for the men who forgot to pack theirs!

High Tea is served in the British

tradition, as guests sip tea from delicate china cups with pinkies raised, while savoring cucumber sandwiches, scrumptious creamy cakes, and koeksisters, a very popular South African delicacy dipped in hot oil and syrup. Silver dishes with biltong (local type of jerky), dried sausage, dried mango pieces, and crisps are strategically placed in the lounge areas.

A nostalgic gong chimes the invitation to

meals. Elegant tables in the two dining cars are set with linen tablecloths, china and crystal glasses bearing the ROVOS emblem, silver cutlery, heavy silver salt and pepper cruets, and tall vases with fresh flowers.

Throughout the three days, the

courses were a gastronomic delight, with starters such as snoek (a local fish) pate and ravioli. We feasted on tender lamb rump and ostrich, salmon and kabeljou line-fish. Guests were introduced to a traditional Cape Malay dish, bobotie (minced beef with a custard topping) and yellow rice, topped off with a crisp sambal. Drunken pecorino cheese served with thin apple slices, and dark seeded bread roll cleared the palate, while delicate South African desserts, such as a traditional milk tart, and malva pudding were introduced.

We savored each course as it was

paired with a different wine from top estates, and unobtrusively, the friendly staff kept our glasses filled: Viognier, Riesling, the uniquely South African Pinotage, and more. Meals stretched to two hours at a time, with pleasant conversations and laughter while we commented on the passing scenery and got to know each other as we clinked glasses and topped off the repasts with Amarula on ice, a variety of different liquors, and creamy chocolates.

Victorian Matjiesfontein and the Diamond City of Kimberley We enjoyed two stops during the

journey, the first being the historic village of Matjiesfontein, established by Scotsman, Jimmy Logan, in 1884 as a wood- and iron railway siding serving meals and refreshments to travelers. A lonely guitar player greeted us as the train pulled into the station, and we stepped back into the previous century. The Mary Rawdon and the Transport Museums brought back memories of long ago. The Olive Schreiner House pays tribute to this South African writer who campaigned for the humane treatment of the Boere in the concentration camps set up during the Boer war.

75

While walking around, the quiet was

shattered by a noisy out-of-tune bugle bellowing an invitation to join the ‘shortest tour in the world’, circling the one street on an old red London bus with an advertisement for Beefeater Gin on the side. Then, this self-proclaimed “Pied Piper” (Johny) led us through the Lord Milner Hotel for a quick look at the original furniture, and into the bar where he donned a top hat and led us into a spontaneous sing-along session of old favorites on the piano. He concluded his act with impersonations of Louis Armstrong and, sunglasses on the nose, Stevie Wonder. He managed to collect a few rands to “buy a chicken for dinner” that night!

76

Links & Libations

On the second stop, buses with

private tour guides picked up passengers for a tour of Kimberley, the capital of the Northern Province of South Africa, to visit the Diamond Mine Museum and the Big Hole. Our train manager, Lucinda, remarked: “This is the place to buy diamonds – much cheaper than anywhere else!”

The city grew up from a

sprawling Gold Rush tent settlement in the early 1870’s, after diamonds were found in nearby Hopetown. The present De Beers Consolidated Mining Company was established in 1888. The Big Hole is the result of the diamond rush from mid-July 1871 to 1914 when 50,000 miners dug the hole with picks and shovels, yielding about 13,600,000 carats of diamonds. Today, it is 1519 feet wide and 787 feet deep, and 40% filled with green water. It is quite intimidating to stand on the viewing platform, the size of an original mining claim, and view what is purported to be one of the largest man-dug holes in the world.

About ten minutes away from

Kimberley, the train slowed down and stopped for a view of the flocks of pink lesser flamingos that settle on the 988 acres blue inland Kamfer’s Lake. It is a significant breeding site for the birds, counting between 20 – 50,000 in number.

Superb ROVOS Staff The staff, many in longstanding employment at ROVOS, was absolutely superb, and obviously loved their work. I heard comments like: “I love seeing different places,” “I get paid to go on vacation while work,” “It is great to meet so many people from different countries,” and “You can work your way up to the top at this company.”

Links & Libations

I spoke at length to Aubrey, one of the

two well-trained and experienced chefs catering for this journey. He comes from a family who served in the hotel industry and has been working for ROVOS for more than fourteen years. He says that “Although it is my job, I am permanently on holiday,” since staff take turns in getting off at stops or accompanying guests on excursions. The set menus are changed up at intervals, and recipes are adjusted to the area through which the train is traveling. Traditional dishes such as bobotie and springbuck are standard. A wagon with deep freezers and coolers for stock enables the kitchen to be self-sufficient, except on longer journeys when fresh produce is bought, and the water supply, stored in tanks under the cars, replenished.

ROVOS Rail offers enticing journeys

along the Garden Route in the Cape, to Victoria Falls and Dar-es-Salaam, Durban, Namibia and golf safaris, and an African Golf Collage. There is also a Charter and Events train. A new route spanning the west and east coasts, is envisaged for 2019.

Alas, the journey could not last

forever, and, as we inched our way to the grand Victorian-style ROVOS RAIL station on Capital Park, we had a final “Bloody Mary” and said goodbye to newfound friends. The ever-attentive members of staff organized our luggage and the passengers to be transported to their various destinations: a smooth transition from pampered dream to inevitable reality.

Homestead Golf & Country Club By: Jed Vaughn

Links & Libations

Lynden, Washington is one of those

historic little towns so often found peppered throughout the scenically diverse state of Washington. Recognized as a strategic vantage point for the military when the US and the British were butting heads prior to the civil war, the indigenous were forced to make way. Over the last century, it’s been transformed into a rich farming area, as well as a popular recreational destination. Just a few miles south of the Canadian border and about two hours north of Seattle, it offers a wide variety of world class recreational activities to explore, which includes ten different golf courses to play throughout the region.

The clubhouse, pro shop,

restaurant, and recreational center are conveniently laid out with the typical surroundings of a driving range and warm up areas nearby.

Homestead Golf & Country Club

is among the choices. It is an expansive course, and with all the available space. The designers were able to implement long and wide fairways making it a reasonably forgiving course to play through. I say reasonably because of the smattering of water hazards and deep bunkers that have been strategically placed throughout. Being the amateur golfer that I am, I found my supply of extra golf balls dwindling as I made my way through the course. A slice or hook off the tee was typically not an issue so much. But the layups, where the water came into play with tight areas toward and around the greens, made the finish of nearly each hole a bit more challenging.

Homestead is indeed an enjoyable

and relaxing course. One that lets you cut loose off the tee on just about every hole. The grounds are well-maintained and offer beautiful landscaping. The 1st tee plays into a long fairway with the green coming into view, dog leg left, from the lie of a well hit drive.

On a clear day, Mt. Baker to the

east is a spectacular site as its year-round snow cap juts out well above the cascade mountain range.

Links & Libations

The fairways are laid out such that the homes lining the perimeters are never in jeopardy of catching a stray ball off the tee, and it’s relatively flat with a multitude of long par fives. One unique attribute is that the 18th hole is the only par 5 that plays into an island green in the state of Washington. It is a man-made isle and resembles a moat, circular in fashion. It’s fun and challenging to try and lay up perfectly to get a short wedge shot onto the green. Surrounded by water completely, you don’t want to have too long a shot to get on, as the green in and of itself is the island for the most part.

After your round, you can get

85

a perfectly prepared steak at the Steak House 9 Restaurant found in the clubhouse. The menu is also extremely diverse. The venue also offers seared tuna, sushi, halibut, squid, and other Pacific Northwest seafood delicacies. Pork riblets, pizza, salads, spaghetti, burgers, sandwiches, chicken quesadillas, hot wings, and nachos are also available on the menu. Whatever you’re craving, chances are you’ll find it with all the great choices available for taming the hunger pangs after a day on the golf course.

86

Links & Libations

Where to Stay: A variety of hotels, motels,

B&B’ s, vacation rentals, and RV parks are all available in the area. I stayed at the Inn at Lynden which made it super easy to get to the course and offered the small-town charm and atmosphere of Lynden. The Inn is a boutique hotel that was converted from Waples Mercantile, a 100-year-old building in the heart of Lynden on main street. The structure is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places and is one of a very few hotels in Washington State with the designation. I found it to be clean, with a courteous and accommodating staff, at a reasonable rate.

Getting There: Homestead Golf Course can be found

just over a mile north of main street in Lynden, less than a 5-minute drive. The small historic town is just 15 miles north of Bellingham Washington on State highway 524. Bellingham has an airport, albeit a small one, but flying to Seattle and driving an hour & a half north to Bellingham is the most common route for most visiting from outside the area. If you want to spend the money for the short flight to Bellingham though, the option is there. Driving there entails a northbound route on Interstate 5 which is the main highway all the way up and down the west coast USA. Coming from Canada, once in the states, you’ll head south in Interstate 5 to the Lynden exit. When you arrive, you’ll be just a stone throw from the Canadian border.

Links & Libations

Homestead is quite popular with Canadian golfers, as they

offer Canadian currency at par for golfing and cart rental. Many them also come to shop for the same reasons, which often gives your significant other a great reason to join the border crossing excursion for the day.

The options are vast when looking for some fun and

recreation in this northwestern region of the country, and Homestead Golf Club is a great choice for a relaxing round of golf on a beautiful summers’ day. Once you visit the area, you’re sure to become a perennial visitor.

It’s that good!

PINEHURST, North Carolina – Any

place with a 100-plus years’ worth of golf history and tradition, great players, great events, great lodging and scenery, rolling into the 21st Century with a new brew pub and its specially name ale, is a place worthy of “Links & Libations” travelers. That’s what happened at the storied Pinehurst Resort in the rolling and wooded North Carolina Sand Hills. Change within the unchanging, polishing the jewel, fun with tradition, whatever saying you want to use, Pinehurst is as alive and inviting, new and fun, as it’s ever been in its century-plus history.

To look for a roadmap for its

resort-wide fun restoration, Pinehurst looked to large public resorts like Bandon Dunes on the Coast of Oregon and Sand Valley in Central Wisconsin. While both places lack the history, tradition and grandeur of Pinehurst, they make sure their guests have plenty of fun with their golf and they can’t wait to return for more of the same.

One of the biggest steps in the fun

makeover at Pinehurst involves some food and drink. “The Pinehurst Brewing Company”, a new age sports bar, made to look old, occupies the original spot for the steam plant which powered the village in 1895. It is just behind the Manor Inn. Today it’s crowded with flat screen TVs lining the walls along with old pictures of the steam plant and a working brewery where Pinehurst brews are pumped out fresh daily. Of course, you order a Pinehurst pale ale and an Oscar Brown along with other location creation crafted by North Carolina Brewer, Eric Mitchell.

96

Links & Libations

The Pinehurst Golf Resort has been

in place, in the rolling and wooded South Carolina Sand Hills, ever since James Walker Tufts came down from the snowy and cold Northeast. He decided this tranquil and scenic area would make a fine place for relaxation and recreation in 1895. Then along comes Donald Ross who teamed with Tufts to make sure that recreation included golf, lots and lots of world class golf. Since then the resort with links history as the self-styled Capital of American Golf has hosted a Ryder Cup, multiple U.S. Opens for men and women, a Tour Championship plus tens of thousands of rounds for amateur golfers of all shapes and sizes and skill levels.

But even the most tradition-bound resort, of which Pinehurst certainly qualifies, must change with the times and this latest version of Pinehurst, mainly crafted by owner Robert Dedman, Jr., President Tom Pashley and architect Gil Hanse, has done quite well on that front as well.

The first step in the process at

Pinehurst, actually happened five years ago, when Ben Crenshaw and Bill Coore were hired to restore the famed No. 2 Course to the original Donald Ross design. One of the major steps was to rip out dozens of acres of turf and replace it with sand and wire grass which Ross had originally designed for it, when he first opened the course in 1907.

Links & Libations

“When we first got the opportunity to work on the No. 2 course, it was very nerve wracking, like a sacred trust. We got a call that somebody had some old photographs of the original design and we were able to restore a lot of the course, to the Ross landscape,” -Crenshaw said.

97

Another huge step forward took place

with the opening, in the fall of 2017, of The Cradle. It is located on the original land for the Pinehurst No. 1 layout, it was the first short course, par 3, in Pinehurst history. The new nine short holes add up to 789 yards, and holes ranging from 60 to 120 yards, complete with the same small sand bunkers, wire grass and saucer-like greens, which made the adjacent No. 2 Course one of the most famous in the world.

“Our goal wasn’t shot values or extensive routing, but just creating a fun course and I think we did that,” said Olympic

Golf Designer Gil Hanse, who was chosen as the architect of The Cradle.

Not only did the absence of grass save the resort thousands of dollars in water bills, but it greatly reduced the number of lost balls, the number one complaint among amateur golfers. The Fun Golf Movement at Pinehurst was officially on.

“My partners and I were honored to design this course at Pinehurst. To work at the same facility as (architects) Donald Ross, Tom Fazio, Ben Crenshaw and Bill Coore and so many others, was a great pleasure.”

98

Links & Libations

Links & Libations

99

Ross, who designed the No. 2 course,

and many others in the area, and lived here for nearly 40 years, is at least partially responsible for The Cradle’s Pinehurst location. Shortly after Tufts hired Ross to oversee the golf creation at Pinehurst, Ross ordered the original holes, where The Cradle now sits, plowed up, saying they were not worthy of a championship design. He then went on to design other courses in the resort area and helped it become the so-called American golf capital it is today. The price to play for The Cradle is just $50 for resort guests and includes all day play while Pinehurst country club members pay various levels of lesser fees. The first couple of holes start fairly simply with the first a slightly downhill 90-yard shot with plenty of room for jeering or cheering golf buddies or other Pinehurst golfers to watch.

But still not satisfied with the fun

factor, Pinehurst brought back Hanse for its most daring redo yet. They took over the Pinehurst No. 4 layout which had been designed by Tom Fazio and brought in a more original Pinehurst look, totally overhauling the course to bring in more huge bunkers, wire grass and sand dunes.

While the look is similar to No. 2,

Hanse said there are some important differences as well.

“There are some greens that are squared off, a tribute to the old school, as well as bunkers 30-40 yards short of greens,” says Hanse. “There are a couple greens that are reminiscent of No. 2, but the greens on No. 4 have their own character and strategy. There is the same huge lake that was present when Fazio first did the No. 4 course and a much more dramatic landscape. “It is a companion in the landscape, but it is not a tribute in the features,” Hanse added.

100

Links & Libations

The name itself has a fun story. One of the original miniature golf courses in America was built at Pinehurst in 1916, and upon seeing the course for the first time, original short course designer James Barber was reported to have said,

“This’ll Do.”

. “The greens are different, the approaches are different, and we wanted to take advantage of the landforms, which are much more dramatic than those on No. 2.”

Of course, the fun was not totally over.

A huge new Putting Course, the Thistle Dhu, was added behind the main clubhouse, featuring 18 holes of various slopes and variety to settle any on-course bets or sharpen your short game for another Pinehurst golfing test.

Links & Libations

Pinehurst has made sure all of

that fun doesn’t crowd out what made the resort special for 100 years. Walking the historic No. 2 course, with a caddy, listing to the bells chime at the nearby Methodist church, and thinking about the greats who have walked the very same path remains one of the great thrills in golf. The traditional, overflowing Southern Breakfast Buffet, at the century-old Carolina Hotel, should never be missed for any reason, and the adjacent Village of Pinehurst is a cool walk for anybody who embraces the golfing lifestyle.

What about another Pinehurst Scratch Pale Ale? There is no better way to celebrate your good fortune, playing and staying and drinking at America’s most historic, and most fun, truly a “Links and Libations” combination.

Out in the Cold: A SnowCastle Experience in Finnish Lapland By: Cat Holladay Photos provided by Kemi Tourism Ltd.

Links & Libations

Just south of the Arctic Circle, in

Finnish Lapland, lies one of the greatest architectural feats of modern times. At least, it does from January through March every year. Come the first signs of spring, the Kemi Lumilinna – or SnowCastle – melts away leaving a blank canvas for the following winter.

LumiLinna History Each year since 1996, the town of

Kemi builds a castle entirely out of snow and ice pulled from the Gulf of Bothnia nearby. This world-renowned structure is known to be the largest snow castle in the world featuring an entirely different floorplan and theme annually. From ice block mazes to sledding along the castle ramparts, visitors delight each year in the innovation of local artisans.

According to the Finland Promotion

Board, approximately 100,000 people visit LumiLinna each year. And while that number may seem small, for an attraction open only three (sometimes a bit longer depending on weather) months a year, not to mention in a remote area of Finland, it’s impressive.

A few key features of LumiLinna

remain the same from year to year despite different themes: there is always a restaurant, a hotel, and a chapel – hosting weddings for lovebirds from all over the world.

Visiting the Snow Castle Visiting LumiLinna is an experience unlike any other, and should you find yourself in this area of the world, make a point to stop in and see it for yourself. For a fee, you can tour all the rooms in the castle, as well as the grounds.

Links & Libations

Regardless of the temperature

outside, the snow castle remains a frigid -5° C inside. Dress accordingly, although chances are high the sights will distract you from recognizing the signs of hypothermia. Kidding aside, it is cold but not unbearable.

113

Drink Up! After touring the castle, circle back

to the ice bar and order a Minttu hot chocolate. A Finnish tradition, the legendary peppermint shot is added to the traditional beverage, warming you up with an icy smooth freshness as it goes down.

If you like the libation, be sure to

purchase a bottle while in the country. You won’t find this liqueur easily anywhere else. However, it’s close to a peppermint schnapps, so you can make do in a pinch.

Each part of the castle is lit with

colored lights, highlighting the numerous ice and snow sculptures rising from the floors and adorning the walls and alcoves everywhere you look.

Prepare to gaze in awe as you

ponder the thousands of hours that went into constructing this behemoth, which includes electricity!

Dine in the Snow Restaurant Take your snow castle experience

up a notch and stay for dinner. The Snow Restaurant serves a three-course meal of traditional fare nightly. Begin your culinary journey with a steaming bowl of creamy parsnip soup with porcini mushrooms and burnt leek. Upon completion, your main course arrives steaming. Eat quickly, at -5° C, it cools down fast. Choose from local lamb, beef, whitefish, chicken, or tofu.

114

Links & Libations

Each entrée comes with a side of

mashed almond potato called Lapin Puikula, a potato grown only in the northernmost areas of Finland. Potatoes won’t taste the same again after trying these smooth buttery gems.

Finish off your meal with an Arctic

berry crumble with warm, salted caramel, vanilla sauce and meringue.

Leave your belongings, including

electronics, behind and enter your snow suite for a night to remember.

If sleeping in the cold isn’t for you,

Sleeping Over Inside the Snow Castle For those interested in an exclusive

overnight experience, a stay in the SnowHotel, is a necessity. The 15-20 room hotel, which varies in size from year to year, accommodates only 1,500 guests annually.

Long after the last day pass visitor

has left the property, overnight guests are ushered into a lounge for a sleep and safety demonstration. There are a few rules you must follow when sleeping at below freezing temperatures.

LumiLinna also offers Seaside Glass Villas. A warmer option, the award-winning villas offer amazing views through the glass walls and ceiling. Seeing the Northern Lights from the warmth of your luxurious bed is a likely possibility during Aurora season (Late August through March).

Links & Libations

Coming in 2019 2019 is a highly anticipated year for LumiLinna. In February, a new main lodge opens, enticing guests with a variety of year-round experiences never before offered. The new building will feature a 4,300 square foot SnowExperience365 – where the SnowRestaurant, ice bar, and snow and ice art are accessible every day of the year.

Whether you come for the day to

gander at the impressive castle built annually or stay to experience the once-in-a-lifetime overnight at the SnowCastle, book your visit now before it melts away!

Valencia, Spain Golf – What a Wonderful World By Tim Cotroneo

Play 18 holes in Spain and you’ll

meet golfers from all over the world. Enthusiasts from Sweden, Norway, United Kingdom, Denmark, Germany, France, Ireland, Iceland, Belgium, Finland, Holland, and all points in between come to play in a land dating back to 138 B.C.

Speak with the golf professionals at

the courses in Valencia, Spain, and you’re encouraged to hear the sport is alive and well. One course hosts 30,000 rounds in a year, another 40,000 and another 55,000.

There’s a respect, friendship, and

joy that you can feel while playing golf in a land whose first course opened in 1891. The country that gave us Seve Ballesteros, Sergio Garcia, and Jose Maria Olazabal is a unique mixture of mountains, Mediterranean Sea, and after round celebrations.

A Look Inside Valencia Golf Valencia, Spain’s third largest

metropolis, is located on the southeastern coast. The city in which the culinary treat paella originated is home to an eclectic mix of golf courses. Some are wedged inside villages, some are drenched in history, and others compare favorably with the most elite tracks in the world.

Let’s look at three Valencia, Spain

golf courses that will open your eyes, heart, and mind to playing golf with an international flair.

Lo Romero’s marketing prowess

can also be found in this 6,200-yard layout’s abundant sand traps. The course’s long-time Superintendent Manuel Fernandez contributes to their marketing campaign by molding the name “Lo Romero” into the sand traps.

the Par 4, 370-yard 18th hole run parallel to each other. They are both great finishers and their positioning below the elevated clubhouse makes for great spectator theater. From Lo Romero’s majestic clubhouse patio and with local favorite Estrella Levante beer in hand, a festive audience enjoys a bird’s-eye view of approach shots and putts along the side-by-side greens.

The Lo Romero clubhouse is perched

on an elevated plateau that allows golfers to survey the ultra-landscaped terrain for miles. About 20 yards from the clubhouse is a giant golf ball that is positioned perfectly between the viewpoints looking out on the 9th and 18th greens. The golf ball happens to have the words “Lo Romero” emblazoned across its circumference, and this symbol draws photo happy golfers like bees to honey.

The 18th hole is especially

dramatic as there is no bail out on its island green. Golfers navigate a walkway and then a 350-degree surround of water. The 18th’s ample and picturesque water is where Lo Romero’s “Island of Golf” tagline comes into play. Lo Romero is a must play for vacationers wishing to bring home a forever Valencia golf memory.

El Saler Golf Course When researching Valencia golf,

the name El Saler comes up again and again. El Saler is annually ranked as one of the best golf courses in all of Europe.

El Saler credibility grabs golfers by

the shirt collar even before the first hole. You can’t miss the plaque revealing the course record of 62 that is held by none other than Bernhard Langer. To further elaborate on El Saler’s history as one of Europe’s best, consider that this 6300-yard nature reserve has hosted several Spanish Opens including two won by Langer.

For United States and Canadian

golfers used to meticulous conditions, the raw environment that is El Saler may be an eye-opener. The wild natural grasses golfers contend with throughout the course are highlighted and described on each tee box. In fact, El Saler is part of a natural park that includes rare species of birds such as Glossy Ibis, Flamingos, and Booted Eagles.

Throughout your round, you can

hear, but not necessarily see, the Mediterranean Sea. On the 8th, 9th, 17th, and 18th holes, the ocean waves get up close and personal. On a windy day, El Saler may hint of Ireland or Scotland golf.

The total El Saler experience may

include staying at the Paradore El Saler. This luxury hotel is one of several state-maintained lodgings throughout Spain which prides itself on service, views, and stylish accommodations.

The Altea clubhouse towers above

the golf course and offers amazing views. The course itself highlights mountain backdrops on several holes and demands precise course management throughout.

For those wishing to play 18, Altea

proposes playing from different tee boxes on the back nine. Despite the elevations, Altea’s health-conscious audience is usually found walking, rather than riding the golf carts that Europeans refer to as “buggies.”

Denver: Getting Educated at Oxford, Harvard & Laws Whiskey House By: Scott Kendall

Links & Libations

At 5,280 feet above sea level,

Denver is known as the Mile-High City. Enveloped by mountains on three sides and a plateau to the east, visitors to Denver are treated to a wonderfully eclectic town high in the Rockies. Visitors can get quite an education from the historic Oxford Hotel, the Harvard Gulch Golf Course, Laws Whiskey House, and other great attractions.

Oxford Hotel

Antiques, marble, opulent furnishings, and the only wood-burning fireplace in a Denver hotel create a warm and welcoming space for guests. The hotel’s restaurant, The Urban Farmer, is a popular steakhouse featuring fresh ingredients and farm-to-table goodness. In fact, the restaurant grows their own fresh herbs and mushrooms, and even have their own bee boxes atop the hotel for honey straight from the honeycomb.

www.theoxfordhotel.com To gain a historic perspective of the Old West, stay at the oldest hotel in Denver. The Oxford Hotel established in 1891. Centrally located right next to Union Station, this grand dame of Denver is within walking distance of Larimer Square, Coors Field, the 16th Street Mall, Dairy Block, and many fine museums, restaurants, parks, and other fun places. Featured on Conde Nast Traveler’s 2017 Readers’ Choice List as one of the “Top Hotels in Colorado,” The Oxford Hotel also houses the award-winning Cruise Room Martini Bar and a highly rated Spa and Fitness Center.

The Oxford Hotel is a blend of the

Old West and the late 1800’s prosperity.

Laws Whiskey House www.lawswhiskeyhouse.com

It was, Sunday, so it seemed

fitting that I would attend church – the Whiskey Church, that is. Sitting on a pew in the second row, I listened to our tour guide, Simon, evangelize about the four-grain whiskey meticulously distilled by Al Laws, the former oil and gas executive turned devout whiskey maker. With the slogan, “There Are No Shortcuts,” Simon makes it clear that this distillery is religious about creating the very best whiskey for its customers. Only the finest corn, wheat, barley and rye are used in a meticulous distillation process, resulting in the award-winning liquid gold made here.

One of the few courses near downtown Denver, this course is fun, friendly, and unpretentious. Green fairways, stately trees, and a view of the mountains in the distance make for an enjoyable outing. They even have night golf from June to August on Saturday nights. Close to the Denver Performing Arts Complex, the 16th Street Mall, and the Colorado Convention Center, Panzano’s is the perfect restaurant in a great central location.

Watching these true artists at work, I

could hardly wait for my entrée. One of the nightly specials, pasta with pork belly, morel mushrooms, scallions, and a flavorful white sauce, was perfectly complemented by a delicious glass of Allegrini Palazzo della Torre. I finished every bite, and still somehow had room for dessert. Favorites on a sampler plate of desserts were a light tiramisu, a tasty olive oil cake with fresh cut strawberries, and a yummy pistachio gelato.

This standout has been awarded 4

Ultreia is a brand-new Spanish and

Portuguese tapas style restaurant located in the historic Union Station. Headed by James Beard Foundation Best Chef Southwest Jennifer Jasinski, this great addition to the Denver food scene opened recently to rave reviews. Tapas include the Croquetas de Jamon, delicately fried balls stuffed with a wonderful cream and ham filling. Don’t miss the Trio de Jamon, three delicious hams cured 2, 3 and 4 years. Other popular dishes are the Costillas de Cerdo, tender spice-rubbed pork ribs, and the Fideua, a mixed seafood dish of shrimp, mussels, squid, and chorizo.

Pacifico Golf Course in Punta Mita By Tim Cotroneo

137

138

Links & Libations

When you are the greatest name in golf, you tend to hold all the cards. In 1999, the DINE Real Estate development team in Mexico’s exclusive Punta Mita region tugged at Jack Nicklaus’ sleeve and requested, “Please design our new golf course.”

Five Stars and Deafening Silence If you think that the DINE

Here’s the part where the DINE

developers held a bit of leverage with the Golden Bear. Nicklaus was offered the best of the best property to apply his design magic. That’s saying a lot when you consider Punta Mita is comprised of 1,500 choice acres almost completely surrounded by the Pacific Ocean and Bandaras Bay. The question was, “Jack, do you think you could do something special here?”

Fast forward to today and golfers

from around the globe flock to the 7,100-yard Pacifico Golf Course which features no fewer than seven ocean holes. Nicklaus was handed a blank canvas that happened to include magnificent ocean views, awe-inspiring vistas of the Sierra Madre mountains, and two of the most luxurious names in hospitality located next door offering accommodations.

development team are good poker players, you’d be right. What’s one way to assure that golfers are lured to your golf course? How about positioning a Four Seasons Resort and a St. Regis Resort a mere three wood drive from your first tee box. After a satisfying day playing one of the most beautiful courses in all of Mexico, perhaps you’ll enjoy hunkering down at not one, but two Five Star resorts with around the clock service. Not enough? How about we throw in miles of beach, a plethora of restaurants, and a spa?

Links & Libations

Once you’re comfortably checked in at

the Four Seasons or the St. Regis, the Pacifico course sneaks up on golfers in the quietest way possible. The silence is deafening on the Par 4, 421-yard first hole. The air is so quiet it’s like the 40-foot palm trees are ambassadors to an upscale al fresco library. On a trademark Riviera Nayarit sunny day, the silence, the air, and the lush green Bermuda fairway makes golfers appreciate their odyssey to see what Jack built. First impressions are huge at Pacifico.

The quiet continues until the Par 3,

181-yard 3rd hole. That’s your first glimpse of Nicklaus the artist. Behind the green you’re welcomed by the sound of ocean waves and the sight of the Pacific in all its turquoise glory. The good news is this sensory embrace is just an auditory and visual appetizer leading up to Nicklaus’ grand architectural entrée.

139

For most golfers who’ve made reservations at Pacifico, at least part of the reason is to take on the course’s 19th hole. What do you mean 19th hole? The Tail of the Whale is considered hole 3b, a 190-yard extra hole that translates into a pure adrenaline rush.

Golfers step up to the tee box and

stare at an island green that’s all carry over the Pacific Ocean. There is no bail out. You’re either on the green or in the drink. This is golf in its rawest, all-natural form. The legacy of Pacifico’s hole 3b is it’s also a golf photo keepsake you won’t soon forget.

Glistening is the word that jumps

fifty yards to your right. There it is: The Tail of the Whale.

out on the Par 4, 355-yard 7th hole. The chances are about 95 percent that the sun is flexing if you’re playing in Punta Mita. That means the El Sol is bouncing off the Pacific Ocean waves serving as a backdrop to the 7th hole green. If you speak Spanish, you’d say the putting green spectacle you’re witnessing is “brilliante,” or “glistening” if English is your first language.

140

Links & Libations

The 8th hole is one-part bougainvillea,

one-part surfer, and one-part Jack you’ve done it again. The red flowers accenting the tee box and putting green add a sexy dash of color to this magnificent Par 3. By the way, the surfers frolicking in the ocean to your left are taking advantage of El Faro, one of western Mexico’s best spots for hanging ten.

Look Back and Say Ahhhhh At the turn you may wish to toast the

Mexican vibe that is Pacifico. Ask for a “Michelada” to quench your thirst. Watch as the bartender runs a lime wedge around the rim of your glass, then adds a bit of sea salt and even a dash of chili powder. Fill your glass with your favorite beer and add ice.

Links & Libations

Depending on your bartender’s preference, you may also request tomato juice, lime juice, and Worcester sauce.

Nicklaus’ flair for the dramatic builds

on the Par 4, 387-yard 17th hole. The whole left side is an immense expanse of Pacific Ocean. If you wonder how Jack could possibly raise his game after the spectacular 17, adjust your sombrero before tackling the Par 4, 445-yard 18th hole. This time the Pacific shows up on the entire right side of the fairway and then wraps behind the green. The 18th is nothing short of “magnifico.”

Before heading to the clubhouse,

trying circling back for a moment.

141

The best photographers often say to look behind you for the money shot you may have neglected. Absorb the Pacific, the surfers, and a final look at one of the Golden Bear’s best. Let out the satisfying “ahhh” that translates in any language.

Pacifico – A Win Win Reflecting on the 1999 discussions

between the Punta Mita real estate developer and the golf course designer, it seems that Jack Nicklaus held all the cards. Almost 20 years later, the verdict is in. Pacifico is a golf course in which both sides went home a winner. There is no doubt that Jack created something special in Punta Mita.

Luckett Vineyards: Wines to Phone Home About By: Lori Sweet

“The fruit and vegetable trade are always on your mind-that inventory is dying by the second-wine, meanwhile is getting better by the minute,” said Pete Luckett. Luckett Vineyard Building

Pete is the outgoing and

enthusiastic personality behind Pete’s Frootique, one of Atlantic Canada’s beloved brands. Rebranded as Pete’s Fine Foods, the outlets were sold to Sobeys in 2015. With time on his hands, he then turned his focus on the winery. His work ethic and philosophy stayed the same and Pete then as now, serves his customers with excitement and passion.

In the beautiful Gaspereau Valley

region of Nova Scotia, Canada sits Luckett Vineyards. On fertile land purchased in 2000, founder Pete Luckett and his family first planted fruits and vegetables. They eventually replaced those with grapes whose vines were the beginning of a now well-known, and much-celebrated winery, that opened to the public in 2010.

Early Days The name Pete Luckett is familiar to

many. Utter the catchphrase “Toodlee-doo” and those who may have lived in Canada’s maritime provinces at one time, will recognize the ending to a show that ran for 14 years on CBC television. He was known as much for his culinary fruit and vegetable expertise as his selection of hats.

The Winery Located in Wolfville, Nova

Scotia, this stunning property overlooks Minas Basin, a sub-basin of the world-famous Bay of Fundy. The valley produces award-winning wines, and this vineyard is no exception.

The story told is that Pete,

Luckett Vineyard

originally from Nottingham, England, wanted something to remind him of home. He set out to purchase a red phone box, which the provider in England was happy to supply. Pete, however, didn’t want just any red phone box, he wanted the one from the corner of the street where he was raised. That very same red phone box is now proudly sitting in the vineyard. Pete, in his unceasing way, wanted to go a step farther. He was able to team up with a local telephone provider, and guests can place a free long-distance call to anywhere in North America.

wines true to the maritime climate and showcase the local grape varietals that truly are worth phoning home about.” www.peteluckette.com Make A Call

You will notice the reference to

a phone box in many places around the vineyard. In the middle of a prominent section of the vineyard stands a red phone box.

Customer Service The underlying thread of customer

service is found throughout the vineyard. “Customers expect extraordinary experience on a regular basis,” says Pete in a video on his website. On any given day, you may find Pete cleaning off tables in the Crush Pad Bistro that overlooks the vineyard, witness him offering his arm to escort ladies to their seats or be overheard proudly talking about the numerous photos on the wall to anyone who asks. His enthusiasm is contagious.

not disappointed. On our earlier vineyard tour, we had been told that Pete and his wife Sue, have six children. The team member doing our tasting had to be one of their children. Her knowledge and delivery were outstanding, and her enthusiasm and passion were reminiscent of Pete’s. Sure enough, Sophia is one of his daughters. Another daughter Geena is the General Manager.

Sophia explained that, ”Nova

Scotia wines make you smile because of the acidity.” Tidal Bay is another wine available here. Wine bearing “Tidal Bay” on the label must be made from 100% Nova Scotia grown grapes. She called it “Tidlee Bee, Nova Scotia in a glass.”
