Letter From the Publisher The PGA Merchandise Show, Orlando, Florida is opening on January 22, 2019! Hip! Hip! Hooray! Spring can’t be far behind! Bring on the Sun! The aroma of Florida in sunshine, annually welcomes, 1500 golf exhibitors and over 45,000 daily show attendees at the Orange County Convention Center. This is my 35th year of attendance at this, closed to the public, merchandise show, where vendors will display their new golf inventions, clothing, trophies, and almost anything you can imagine, centered around golf. Most attendees at the show admit,

sometimes reluctantly, that the warmth of Florida speaks to their golfing soul much more than “carpet putting” in a northern state and they love to plan their week at the show. Admittedly, we do save time for a little golf before and after attending the business portion of the day. Who Knew?

Our January issue will begin to cover the advancement of golf ’s widgets, gadgets, golfclubs, and most importantly, destinations for perfect planning of your next golf get away. The PGA Merchandise Show has integrated some of the World’s best and most luxurious destinations, for golfers to begin dreaming about shortly after opening up their last present and finishing left-overs from the holidays.

Our credentialed writer, Art Stricklin, President of the Texas Golf Writers Association, and noted author, is featuring Reynolds Lake Oconee, https://www.reynoldslakeoconee.com/life/golf , a signature Ritz-Carlton destination centered on one of the finest golfing, fishing and residential complexes in the South. Art brings to life, how professionals and amateurs enjoy the training, practice and retirement facilities of this Georgia facility.

If you would like to plan a trip with a true

legend, author and world traveler, Art takes intimate groups of golfers to some of the most iconic golf destinations every year. As of this writing, Art still has room on his visit to this year’s Masters. Check out “The Art of Golf Travel” for more information. https://theartofgolftravel.com . There might be a chance that myself and of our team members will be enjoying that week with Art, and of course, if he is paying, we will be there for sure. Enjoy this issue and start planning your golf travels for the spring. Cheers, Randy Weckerly

Chef Dave Recap 2018 Christmas Dinner Written By: Randy Weckerly Photo By: David Trevelino

Links & Libations

Dave Trevelino, Master Chef at TPC

Potomac at Avenel Farms, continues his service of feeding the sailors during the Holidays. His fifth year of planning and immaculate execution of multiple events, was no exception. He and his family, wife, Linda and son, Andrew, spent days preparing and then feeding the members of the USS Chicago and the USS Missouri.

Chef Dave is very generously

supported by his members at TPC Potomac, who raise money throughout the year for all costs pertaining to his mission of cooking in the galley of America’s elite nuclear submarines. One again, this year, he prepared food aboard the USS Chicago for the sailors who have to remain on board during the holidays, tending to the protection of their mission.

9

We found out this year, on our “Happy Hour Golf Show” http://bit.ly/2RtBZ81 , that there was only one hiccup, a faulty generator, which was quickly resolved, with a long extension cord aboard the USS Missouri. As you can tell by the pictures on the USS Missouri, appointed with lights, in honor of its years of service, the New Year’s Eve banquet, for over 350 sailors and families, was an evening to remember. The fireworks in Pearl Harbor on New Year’s Eve capped off a great week for sailors and the Trevelino Mission.

Chef Dave loves his mission, and

served, not only, his wonderfully prepared dishes of filet mignon, scallops, rich mac and cheese, asparagus but also desert of flowerless chocolate cake. His wife and son worked together during this family mission, in preparation for the Christmas and New Year’s celebrations. His son served on the USS Chicago and was important in this mission five years ago at its inaugural event.

10

While the sailors love for Dave is ever

present, all who know Dave, as one of the kindest people one could meet, he feels more honored by being able to deliver holiday meals every year. Chef Dave and his supportive membership raised over $80,000.00 to serve over 500 total plates of food during both events. It is quite an incredible amount of planning and logistics for this to be done so professionally, with such a small staff.

Chef Dave said, of this year’s event, “What a party! I want to thank all of my TPC POTOMAC MEMBERS for making this evening possible!! And thank you the Sailors and Families of the USS CHICAGO AND USS MISSISSIPPI for all you do and sacrifice for us here at home!!”

We all owe a debt to our service members and if you would like to contribute to Chef Dave’s 2019 mission, please contact Dave at TPC Potomac at Avenel Farms, Potomac, Maryland.

Tiger’s Back and the PGA Merchandise Show is Here! Written By: Randy Weckerly Photos By: PGA Show & Kira Peterson

“Holy Cow, did you see that….

no wait there’s more here …no wait…where did you go?”

Famous words echoed on the first day

of the PGA Merchandise Show held annually at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida. This is the destination, every January, for any professional in the world of golf to see what is unfolding, for every experience imaginable, destination travel, teaching, golf equipment, clothing trends, and worldwide developments on every level, impacting golf society in this specialize world of sports.

From the Press Release for this year’s

PGA Show, come these words,

“Organized by the PGA of

America, the PGA Forum Stage was introduced in 2007, to provide the game’s leaders with an unprecedented opportunity to reach the more than 40,000 attending international industry professionals on key matters that impact the business of golf. Those in attendance will roam nearly 10 miles of PGA Show aisles, featuring more than 1,000 exhibiting companies and brands displaying a wide range of products and services.”

It is easy to get lost in the bright lights,

the luster and shine of optimism, supported by the mysticism of golf ’s magic. Everyone admits Tiger Woods’ importance to the world of golf, as they say, “Tiger not only moves the

needle in the world of golf’s growth- He is THE NEEDLE.”

We all saw the throng of golfers during

the FedEx Cup, where Tiger’s comeback became complete, his victory march with Rory McIlroy to the 18th fairway of East Lake GC in Atlanta, Georgia.

Links & Libations

His comeback brings awareness to

golfers on all levels. And while admittedly, the game of golf is in somewhat in a decline, the initiatives of the Masters’ Drive, Chip and Putt Contest, bringing international fun and awareness to children; the 2016 Olympics bringing golf back to the Games; and now the LPGA newest grow the game initiative, #inviteHER, have all led to this year’s PGA Show, not only an important event for companies showing their newest wares, but also excitement for golfers new and old.

This year our Vice President of

Marketing, Kira Peterson, who had never golfed before the introduction of the #inviteHER, is making her second trip to this year’s show with a new vision of the world of golf.

21

During her inaugural visit to the show, in 2018, it was, as it is with most people during their first visit, miles and miles of corridors, sore feet and an overwhelming confusion in trying to figure out what and why she was in the world of golf. While she had a great time, she admits, she was totally ignorant of any aspect of golf, golf marketing, or how golf fit into her life. other than working for a media company that produces the “Happy Hour Golf Show” and this magazine.

Miss Kira soon after had her first

putting lesson and soon after that lesson, due to her magnetism in media, she was encouraged by “The Golf Doctor”- Mike Calbot and Art Stricklin, President of the Texas Golf Association, to see if she could be a sounding board and a leader in growing the game.

22

Links & Libations

In the weeks that followed, and due to

her large group of Facebook followers and social media interest, she created, with the help of yours truly, the “Miss Kira 18+1 Steps into Golf” series of short videos. These videos are designed to explain golf to golfing novices, such as herself. The “Miss Kira” segments help new golfers understand basis steps of how to begin golfing, as a sport, a pastime, or just a way to get out of the house and have fun.

She then met, on one of the “Happy

Hour Golf Show/Podcast”, Donna Hoffman, Founder of “Women on Course”, a 20,000-member organization of women who profess to like to “Golf, Travel and Wine”. With our “Links & Libations- Luxury Travel Magazine” which emphasizes “Golfers Golf and then they Sip”, it seems to be a perfect fit, to learning the advantages of travel and networking from Donna.

Simply said by Miss Kira, “It’s fun and I’m learning a lot from all those around me, on a daily basis. I can only thank Mike Calbot, Art Stricklin, Tim Bona and our entire team for taking the time to support my interest in getting involved and helping me to learn how to grow the game.” As the author of this article, I am super

As it happens at the PGA Show every

year, Donna and Miss Kira have scheduled a time to meet in person and create ways to work together, to grow their brands, open up avenues of meeting new women golfers; while learning how to grow the game.

excited in seeing Miss Kira attend her second show, with the wide-eyed optimism of every golfer, as we are ready to see what’s new for 2019. This should be a great year. Now on to the show!

Bless Your Heart: Southern Hospitality Never Had It Bless Your Heart: Southern So Good as Never Reynolds Hospitality HadLake It Oconee So Good as Reynolds Lake Oconee

GREENSBORO, Georgia – Southern

Hospitality, a polite way of saying we have more than enough, Links, Libation, Scenery and good times, have for decades, since this huge piece of water-crossed scenery, established on the shorefront land between Atlanta and Augusta, Georgia.

Reynolds Lake Oconee, named for the

huge lake the property is on, was begun more than 30 years ago, by local businessman Mercer Reynolds and his family.

The resort grew from a single course,

The Plantation, designed by Architect Bob Cupp and opened in 1998, Then a course of a Jack Nicklaus’ signature designs, Great Waters, which opened in 1992, and was just recently renovated. Now there are six golf courses, designed by some of the best architects in golf. It’s a complete family resort experience, which is one of the reasons Reynolds assembled the property in the first place, for his large family.

Reynolds now boasts six golf courses,

and since its new owner, who purchased the massive facility from the Reynolds family in 2012, work on polishing and adding to the green grass jewel has been done.

Most notably, the recent outdoor

opening of the Sandy Creek facility, which includes skeet and target practice, along with air guns and high-tech archery, accompanied by a large wooden party barn, complete outfitters, lockers, along with a place to eat, drink, celebrate and commiserate.

Cupp was still fairly unknown as a golf

course designer when Reynolds called on him to design the first course at his then-named Plantation. The success of his tree-covered layout with a view of the lake in the background, and pleasure boats cruising the waters, proved that the concept of a Southern golf haven, was sustainable.

Links & Libations

35

36

Links & Libations

But it was the arrival of Nicklaus, in

the fall of 1991, which officially launched Reynolds into the hyperspace of top US golf resorts. His Par 72 Great Waters course placed nine of the 18 holes directly on or overlooking Lake Oconee, that includes an unforgettable closing stretch of holes 16-17-18. “The first time I came to Great

Water I knew it had the potential of being a great golf course, but we had to find it. I think we found it,”

Nicklaus said, in a massive understatement.

It quickly leapt into best new course

discussions, and top 100 courses in the US, and was named by a variety of publications as one of the most scenic courses in the Southeast. Even 25 years after it opened, Great Waters remains the most popular course at Reynolds.

Generations of golfers still arrive to

confront Great Waters and tackle the memorable closing challenge of the par four 16th, the par three 17th and par five 18th, all either alongside or overlooking the Lake Oconee waters.

A number of professional tournaments,

including the Andersen Match Play Championship, and televised exhibitions, have introduced Great Waters to millions of viewers. “It’s one of the really great

pieces of property I’ve ever had the chance to work on,”

Nicklaus said.

Next to appear on the golfing scene

was another pretty fair architect, Tom Fazio, who did the National course in 1997 with fewer waterside views, but plenty of very playable, wooded Fazio hole designs.

A new nine holes, The Cove nine,

was added to The National courses in 2000, and two years later the next evolution of the popular facility was completed, with both the Ritz Carlton resort and the Reynolds practice facility, now known as The Kingdom, in 2002.

Links & Libations

Some longtime Reynolds members and

staff questioned why a Ritz Carlton, which has been successful as a luxury haven, would operate in this wooded family golf destination. It has not only survived, but thrived with golfers’ families and groups, wanting top notch accommodations to match their top-notch golf.

Most of the rooms overlook the

Oconee Cove with paddle boats and watercraft available to rent along with a complete spa, indoor and outdoor pool and a manmade beach, all next to the resort.

37

There is a variety of indoor and outdoor restaurants, large rooms, balconies and big screen TVs which allow even the most golf-hating family member to rest and play in style here.

The Reynolds practice facility, better known as the TaylorMade Kingdom (one of only two in the US, and the only one on the East Coast) allows top players, millionaire professionals and most importantly golf-loving and ability-challenged resort guests, to come out and test a wide variety of new equipment with all the latest technology.

38

Links & Libations

Using the high-tech Trackman

systems, golfers can measure their swing speed, launch angle and ball flight to measure each violent or sweet swing on the golf course. They learn how they can improve whatever game they bring to Reynolds.

There is a computer putter lab for the

most maddening part of the game, along with covered and heated practice bays, plus computer sensors and mirrors to check your actual swing vs. what you always imagined your swing looked like.

There is even a PGA Tour fitting

trailer parked on property, to view up-close and personal how today’s Tour players get one stop services, and Reynolds guests can order any club or component they want.

The Cupp designed the Port

Armour courses, now known as Reynolds Landing were the next to be added to the golfing menu. This was followed by The Creek Club, designed by Colorado architect, Jim Engh, the resort’s most interesting, scenic, horrible or goofy, take your pick, though all can apply, course.

Creek Club is a private, member only

course, with limited access, but is certainly unique for anyone who has the chance to tee it up there. The par 72 course is visually stunning, but almost all the greens are concave toward the hole, which means a truly horrible shot can catch a ridge and roll a foot from the cup or a well struck approach can bound yards away.

Links & Libations

For those who need a break from golf

or want to forgo golf entirely, the new outdoor Sandy Creek facility is perfect choice. Visitors can shoot a wide variety of guns, walk the wooded facility with trained guides, who offer basic and expert instruction.

The new archery course is especially

inviting as those who haven’t shot bows and arrows since their junior Y-Camp days. All are in for quite an awakening. The high-tech weapons now use a scope and multi-color sights, just like shotguns, allowing first time archers to have the success they only dreamed of in younger days.

The longtime expansive resort

facility has now become a full-fledged, full-sport resort, on Lake Oconee, midway between the modern Southern mega-city and this revered golfing shrine.

To use another longtime Southern

expression, bless your heart, if you get a chance to check this out.

The Hills are Alive Walking out onto the extensive grass

lawns and looking toward the Green Mountains surrounding the luxury Trapp Family Lodge, near the small town of Stowe in Vermont, one can hear Julie Andrews sing “The hills are alive…..”. It was here that the real-life Maria von Trapp saw the original farmhouse perched on a hill, offering views of Mount Mansfield and the Worcester Mountain Range. In reply to Captain Georg von Trapp‘s remark, that the building looked dilapidated, Maria responded: ”You can

fix up the house, but you cannot fix up the view.” And so, the Von Trapps’ acquired the property.

With ten children in tow, they managed to survive by touring America as the Trapp Family Singers. After purchasing the estate, they continued to offer more concert tours while developing the property as a hotel. After the original building was burnt to the ground, they found an Austrian architect in Stowe and designed the existing hotel in a style reminiscent of their homeland. The original family members are laid to rest in a small graveyard near the hotel. The new generation is continuing their legacy.

Flight of Fear Watching the interview with Maria

von Trapp during the official tour of this historic property, one is moved by the incredibly heroic story of how this couple, fled from Nazi-occupied Austria and Hitler in 1938 during the Second World War.

Trapp Family Lodge Situated on 2,500 acres of wilderness,

the resort today includes a luxury European lodge, upmarket guesthouses, chalets, and time-shares. There are various dining options, including a traditional Austrian breakfast, served in the main dining room each morning. The fitness center sports, indoor and outdoor pools, the outdoor hot tub, with mountains towering in the background, and is a very popular cross-country skiing and also has great walking trails.

He established a lucrative beer-brewing business. During his frequent visits to the old country, he gained an appreciation for the crisp, clean Austrian lager beers, and in 2010 his dream of an Austrian-style brewery at the Trapp Family Lodge became a reality.

Very few breweries in the USA focus

on lagers since they are more challenging and more expensive to brew and take longer to mature. The Trapp Lager brewery started with a capacity of 2,000 barrels per year. They soon gained such acclaim that they decided to commercialize their family heritage and establish Von Trapp Brewing. Johannes had the foresight to think big and in 2015, built a massive building housing the brewery on the Trapp Family Lodge property.

Von Trapp Brewing A young Johannes von Trapp saw the

potential of using the abundance of natural spring water on the property for brewing beer.

The Von Trapp Legacy This thriving holiday destination is

ideally suited as a base for skiing pursuits in winter, while it offers hiking and biking trails during the warm months. The Von Trapp Brewing Bierhall and Restaurant is conveniently located near the mountain bike and cross-country ski trails.

Flights of Beer at the Von Trapp Brewing Bierhall Restaurant The Brewing Bierhall offers an

informative tour, through their squeaky-clean stainless-steel facilities, with state-of-the-art apparatus, including conveyor belts at the end of the production line, and an automatic packaging system. At the conclusion of the tour, visitors can savor flights of beer in the restaurant.

The Bierhall is a favorite gathering place for friends to “enjoy a little of Austria, a lot of Vermont. In addition to the flavorsome Austrian lagers, Austrian lunches and dinners are freshly prepared. Another showcase feature of the Bierhall is the wood-fired Parilla grill, used in the preparation of many of the menu items.

The Trapp Cross Country Ski

Center, the first of its kind in the United States, opened to the public in 1968. In addition to a store selling sporting equipment on the property, lessons are available.

Visitors can also take a tour along The

Sugar Road Trail deep into the forest to the Trapp’s Sugar House, where maple syrup is harvested from the surrounding, tapped trees.

How to Get to There The charming village of Stowe, with

its quaint shops and restaurants, lies 30 miles from Burlington International Airport. To reach the Trapp Family Lodge, one drives out of town on Mountain Road, then veers off to the left to Trapp Hill Road.

The history of the Von Trapp

family has become ensconced in the history of Stowe, Vermont. It has been said that the Trapp Family Lodge is “one of New England’s greatest treasures.”

San Diego is a proud military town.

Naval ships are moored at the harborside naval base. The Naval Air Station is located right on Coronado itself. Fighter jets and helicopters flying overhead are a common island site.

Though seaside resorts were

commonplace along the American coast during the 19th century, few were as large or distinctive as “The Del”- the moniker lovingly used by locals. The historic hotel happens to be the second largest wooden structure in the entire United States.

Visitors of The Del Throughout History The list of famous visitors to The Del

is endless. Thomas Edison, Charlie Chaplain, Babe Ruth, and Katherine Hepburn are but a few of the distinguished guests at this timeless resort, Hollywood greats still flock here today.

Several movies were filmed at the

resort, the most well-known, Some Like It Hot starring Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis, and Jack Lemmon. L. Frank Baum, author of the famous Wizard of Oz, referred to Coronado Island as his “Personal Oz.” He did much of his writing at the resort, and many believe the Del was the inspiration for the Emerald City.

That man happened to be Edward, the

future King of England who later abdicated the British throne to marry her. Though she would never be queen, Simpson was granted the title of Duchess of Windsor and she and Edward shared a long and happy life together.

Strolling through the “Del” is an

enchanting walk through time. Its storied history is well documented with fascinating photos located throughout the hotel.

This “Grand Lady of the Sea” is

also reputed to be the setting for one of the most spectacular love stories of our time. It’s widely reported that Wallis Simpson, married to a U.S. Naval officer and living in Coronado at the time, met her future husband at the Del in 1920, thereby changing the course of history.

Magnificent Accommodations Lodging at this 28-acre resort range

from rooms and suites in the iconic Victorian Building, the contemporary beach-chic Ocean Towers, ground-floor seaside California Cabanas, to the luxurious Beach Village. Sun-kissed oceanfront views are downright spectacular. Rooms with courtyard and garden views have the advantage of being quieter and more private.

Dining at The Del Hotel Del is home to a lavish Sunday

brunch in the magnificent Crown Room (with crown-shaped chandeliers). It features a variety of seafood and international dishes, carving stations, a Bloody Mary bar, made-to-order mimosas and a spectacular candy and dessert bar. It’s an absolutely sinful feast for the senses.

For those into seaside dining, both

1500 Ocean, the resort’s signature restaurant and Sheerwater, its more casual eatery, are located oceanfront. Gentle sea breezes and iconic California sunsets make these ideal settings in this Southern California paradise.

ENO, the artisan pizzeria and wine bar

also sports a beachfront location. Four popular bars at the resort are variously situated on an elevated sun deck, poolside, feet in the sand, or in the richly appointed historic Babcock and Story Bar, named after the hotel’s visionary founders.

Hotel Del Experiences One of our favorite pastimes in a

Hotel Del getaway is sitting around the firepits located in various locations throughout the property–perfect spots when Pacific Coast temperatures dip after sunset (which they do year-round).

Shopping at the resort is one

pleasurable experience after another as boutique stores carry everything from beach-inspired apparel, refreshing bath and body products to nostalgic treasures, unique keepsakes, and signature Hotel Del merchandise.

The Spa at The Del is a coastal

sanctuary offering ocean-inspired body treatments, relaxation rooms, and hot tubs. Spa guests not staying at the resort are still welcome to use resort facilities including its oceanfront infinity pool.

Bill just happens to build the most incredible sand-dripped beach castles we’ve ever seen, right on the sands fronting the resort hotel.

Exploring Coronado Island The Del’s perfect island location on Orange Avenue (Coronado’s Main Drag) makes it easy to venture in to the heart of Coronado’s charming downtown village.

One of the most ideal ways to explore

the island is by bike. Bike rentals are available from multiple venues throughout Coronado. The island speed limit is only 25 mph to ensure the safety of its pedestrians and bicyclists.

Rated as one of the best public golf

courses in the U.S., tee times for the Coronado Public Golf Course should be scheduled in advance.

shores courtesy of Bill Bavlaka, a retired construction worker, known as the King of Sandcastles.

Immaculate greens, wide inviting

ROLL OUT THE BARREL Written By: ELSA DIXON Photos By: Elsa Dixon & Jeffreys Bay Craft Brewery

Links & Libations

BEER, BEACH, AND SURF It was not difficult to find Jeffreys Bay

Craft Brewery on the Sunshine Coast – I drove into the ‘Surfing Village’ where two trucks with bold lettering (JBayCB) revealed its location. I rattled the chain on the gate and a surfer dude opened it for me. Once inside, the path led straight to the huge open doors of the brewery and to Bruce Tavenor, the congenial proprietor. Bruce is a well-respected chemical engineer who, during the ten years he worked for South African Breweries, became a Brewing Process Engineer. It has been a pipe dream to set up a brewery in Jeffreys Bay and “to give back to the town that has provided him a lifetime of happy memories, joy, and inspiration”.

Masterminding JBayCB, he

captured the slogan ‘Beer Brewed for Surfers, by Surfers’, and set up the company involving his family: he envisaged the six beers he wanted to produce and his son, a design engineer, designed the labels reflecting the natural colors of the indigenous aloes and the surrounding beaches of the Eastern Cape of South Africa. His daughter handles marketing and sales. Bruce, basically an entrepreneur at heart, considers himself a ‘surfer proprietor’. At present, he is training two young surfers as assistant brewers.

SURF AND LIQUID STOKE

JBayCB wants to capture the essence

of a surfer’s stoke, the legacy of surfing and the unique environment of Jeffreys Bay and infuse that into a liquid stoke, hence the slogan ‘Beers Brewed for Surfers, by Surfers’. Adding a touch of mystery, Bruce claims that he has “a secret source for really good advice on the formulation of a recipe for a very good brew, but that source prefers to remain anonymous”.

Links & Libations

109

Top quality ingredients inspire

JBayCB’s lineup of high-quality craft beer. Three varieties of hops, locally grown in the nearby George area are used for flavor bittering, while eight varieties of ‘aroma hops’ are imported from Germany and the USA. He uses local malt from Caledon in the Boland (Western Cape), combining it with imported specialty malt, the formulation determining the colors and flavors. The bright darkish golden color, distinctive fruitiness and acidity of Captain Jeffreys Settlers Pale Ale can be traced back to the original Pale Ale of the British Isles. Since the carbonation level is lower than most Lagers, the Ale has a smooth drinkability and the foam head will hold up without being too gassy. A toast to Captain Jeffrey!

The Oom (Afrikaans for uncle)

WAVES, LEGENDS, AND LABELS

Bruce put a lot of thought into

naming the craft beers, wanting to pay tribute not only to Jeffreys Bay as a world-renowned surfing destination but also to two legends associated with the town and surfing.

Captain Jeffreys Settlers Pale Ale

recognizes the man for whom the town is named. In the early 1850’s, en route down the East Coast of Africa, Captain Jeffreys’ wooden cargo sail ship was shipwrecked during heavy storms, leaving only the Captain and a few survivors who subsequently settled in the Bay.

honors the ‘Father’ of South African surfing, John Whitmore, who, in the 1950’s, discovered the amazing waves of Jeffreys Bay. He shaped the first foam surfboards in the country and also created the first South African roof racks.

The Oom brew, locally called

Whitemore’s Mellow “Weizen”, is based on a traditional German beer recipe locally crafted to suit South African tastes. This unfiltered yeast-turbid wheat beer is highly carbonated to a level of 2.5 vols. Using German, Czech and American aromatic hops, a medium bitterness of 16BU is achieved, making it highly drinkable.

110

Links & Libations

Albatros Soul Surfers Ale recalls leg

burning rides on one of the longest waves in the world along a piece of the Jeffreys Bay coastline. This smoother amber beer with a carbonation level of 2.0 vols has a rich dark color contrasting pleasingly with the dazzling white foam head in the glass.

Supers Light Lager, a crisp lively beer,

salutes riding the longest, most majestic right-hand point break wave in the world. It has a carbonation level of 2.5 vols and a Bitterness Unit (BU) of 20, slightly lower than most beers in South Africa. Caramel Aromatic Malt is added, giving it its characteristic taste and smell.

The round, heart-stopping barrels of

the bigger swells are reflected in the Boneyards Dark Lager label. There is a distinctive malt and German aromatic hops flavor in the taste of this lively, slightly darker beer with a carbonation level of 2.5 vols and a medium Bitterness Unit (BU) of 21.

Magnas Perfect Pilsener celebrates a

tide dependent right-hander wave so whimsical that each surfer experiences it in a different way. It is hopped with South African bittering but underpinned with Czech Saaz and German Hallertau Perle aroma hops. The beer has a smooth, very pleasant character with a slightly bitter taste.

Bruce is an ‘on the ground’ type of

person, taking great personal pride in his work and consulting with the local surfing community to get a feel for the product they desire. He claims that the locals seem to prefer both Supers Light Lager and Albatross Amber Ale while the foreigners favor the latter.

BARRELING AHEAD I had arrived at a historic moment: the brewery operation was moved from a Johannesburg site and new equipment was installed on the Jeffreys Bay site.

Links & Libations

They were in the process of

cleaning up for the first full-scale production that would start on the premises the very next day. The brewery is now the second largest one in the Eastern Cape, able to produce up to 11,000 gallons of craft beer a month. JBayCB is certainly rolling out the barrels.

Texas Hill Country: William Chris Vineyards Deliver Texas Terroir By: Scott Kendall

Links & Libations

It all started in a Texas Hill

Country bar. Two men, both experienced in the grape growing and wine-making business, sat down and started talking about wine. One thing led to another, and these men discovered they had a lot in common – especially their shared passion for excellence in growing the best grapes, using the best fermentation processes, and creating the highest quality Texas wines.

“Terroir (from terre, “land”) is defined as the environmental conditions, especially soil and climate, in which grapes are grown which give a wine its unique flavor and aroma. William Chris delivers Texas terroir. Growing half of our production ourselves and sourcing the other half from 14 Texas families. William Chris proudly grows 100% Texas wine.”

Out of this barroom chat grew a

partnership between William Blackmon and Chris Brundrett. William Chris Vineyards was born in 2008 in the small Texas town of Hye, Texas, just 20 minutes east of Fredericksburg on Highway 290. Since then, William Chris Vineyards has grown into a highly respected winery, creating top quality wines using grapes from multiple vineyards all over the state of Texas.

William Chris is more than just a

winery. It’s a philosophy and a way of life. The goal? To make the highest quality wines with grapes grown in the unique “terroir” of Texas. As they explain at their website:

In the same way that other regions of

the world have branded their unique wines, William Chris wants to put their stamp on every bottle they produce. France has their Bordeaux, Burgundy, and Champagne. Italy has Tuscany, Veneto, and Piedmont. And California has Napa Valley, Sonoma County and Paso Robles. Similarly, William Chris wants Texas wines to distinguish themselves and establish a recognizable label to accurately describe the wines of the Lone Star State.

White wine lovers will enjoy the very

popular Mary Ruth, a white blend with a wonderful floral bouquet. At the top of my list is Skeleton Key, a delicious red blend with big bold flavors of lush dark fruits and undercurrents of earth and sweet hints of vanilla. Another favorite was the Mourvedre, full of spicy cinnamon and zesty red fruits.

Learn from the experienced staff at

With that thought in mind, William

Chris Vineyards partnered with other Texas vineyards and wineries to form Texas Wine Growers. The group hopes to protect the authenticity in wine labeling, ensuring that Texas wines made with Texas grapes are recognized as such. Just as a Chianti Classico, a French Bordeaux, or a Tuscany Brunello is known for the area and grape used in its production, the label Texas Wine Growers will inform consumers that these wines are truly Texas wines made with Texas grown grapes.

Visitors coming to William Chris can

start at the historic tasting room, housed in a refurbished farmhouse built in 1905. Enjoy your wine inside the original homestead, or step outside on the patio under towering oaks and soak in the rolling hills of the countryside. The very first wine produced by William Chris was their flagship Enchante – 6 barrels produced in 2009.

William Chris as they share some of the history and details of their wonderful wines. Complement your wines with an assortment of cheeses, pate, and hummus. And for a special treat on weekends, enjoy live music from an array of talented musicians. Settle in for a relaxing few hours, unwind, and enjoy that great Hye hospitality.

Lincoln, Links and History at the Luxury Equinox Written By: Elsa Dixon Photo By: Elsa Dixon & Equinox

The Luxury Equinox Golf Resort and Spa Stepping into the tranquil serenity of

the luxury Equinox Golf Resort and Spa, it is hard to imagine that this opulent establishment had undergone so many transformations and used to be a hotbed for American revolutionaries. Since 1769 it has borne many names: Marsh Tavern, Thaddeus Munson’s New Inn, Widow Black’s Inn, Vanderlip’s Hotel, The Taconic, The Orvis Hotel, and Equinox House.

It became a favorite gathering place for locals, and the regional Council of Safety held its first meetings there. During the American Revolution, Ira Allen, Ethan’s younger brother, recommended confiscating this Tory property to raise money for equipping a regiment of the Green Mountain Boys. Owner William Marsh subsequently fled to Canada.

Situated in Manchester, Vermont, on

historic route 7A at the foot of Mount Equinox, the 200-room Equinox Hotel today is not only a carefully restored national historic place but also one of New England’s most sought-after travel destinations.

In 1780, the Marsh Tavern was bought

by Thaddeus Manson who built the adjacent Munson’s Inn, and in 1839, Martin Vanderlip added the present-day trademark fluted columns measuring 295 feet across. The Equinox House, incorporating the original Orvis homestead, was established in 1853. Its fireplace inscribed “L.C. Orvis 1832”, is still used today to warm up the North wing of the hotel.

The Equinox was designated a

National Historic Place in 1972, and after many years of restoration, reopened in 1985 as a resort hotel and conference center. In March 2007, HEI Hotels & Resorts acquired the historic property and bought the 13-room 1811 House.

The name Equinox refers to the

autumnal equinox in 1823 when Vermont Surveyor General, Colonel Partridge reached the summit of the mountain, the tallest peak in the Taconic Mountain range, over 3,800 feet above the village of Manchester.

Lincoln and Other Presidential Links

Robert Lincoln, the only child of

Abraham and Mary Lincoln to survive to adulthood, had strong links to The Equinox and Manchester. In 1864, together with his mother and brother Tad, he stayed at the Equinox. Abraham Lincoln was scheduled for a visit the following year, and an exclusive suite was constructed in his honor, but instead, he was tragically assassinated. Mary and Robert, an avid golf player, often returned to The Equinox. Robert so loved the area that in 1905, he purchased the nearby Hildene Farm and built the ancestral home that stayed in the family for 70 years.

Mary Lincoln, granddaughter of

Abraham Lincoln and her family lived in the 1811 House for 34 years. Built in the 1700s, it has Federal period style features, such as fireplaces, baths, and porches, and displays original artwork, antiques, and oriental rugs.

Since the early 1900’s, the Equinox has

hosted four U.S. Presidents and one Vice President: Presidents William Howard Taft, Ulysses S. Grant, Theodore Roosevelt (who gave a campaign speech on the front lawn), Benjamin Harrison, and Vice President James S. Sherman.

133

And for those who want to have

splendid views of the golf course, and be close to the first tee, there is the spacious three-bedroom bi-level Dormy Suite. It offers a full kitchen, comfortable bedrooms, large living areas, jacuzzis, and huge bathrooms, individual patios, outdoor furniture, and grills.

Five Exceptional Dining Areas Luxury Accommodations in Beautiful Settings The timeless natural beauty of

Manchester entices one to stay at The Inns at the Equinox or one of the Townhomes with rooms refurbished by the sought-after designer Mitchell Gold, or at the romantic 1811 House with its 13 beautiful guestrooms named after remarkable Manchester characters.

The Marsh Tavern, the Chop House

and the Falcon Bar can all be found in the north wing of the hotel. The Marsh Tavern now specializes in hearty New England dishes, such as smoked wagyu brisket and prime rib melt. The adjoining Chop House offers excellent signature steak dishes, and a selection of desserts such as Hazelnut Gianduja Mousse Tart and Banana Rum Cheesecake, while the Falcon Bar leads to a social deck replete with a fire pit. The Colonnade serves breakfasts and hosts special events in the magnificent ballroom.

The Golf Digest, Golfweek, and Golf Magazine have named this scenic par-71 6,423-yard design best in its class. Staff members called the Signature Tee 13th the ‘most difficult’. Visitors agree that the course has some challenges, but “it is relaxing and has beautiful views.” The same can be said for virtually all experiences at this luxury Equinox Golf Resort and Spa in Manchester, Vermont.

Award-winning Spa and Wedding Destination The award-winning Spa with indoor

pool and fitness center boasts locally inspired facials, massages, and treatments. A unique feature is the restored old Hotel scale that used to stand in the lobby for guests to prove that they gained weight while staying there!

The Colonnade Ballroom with its

vaulted ceilings and floor length windows overlooking the beautiful Lincoln Gardens and Terrace is a popular wedding destination all year round, while the Pond Pavilion and Meadow house are seasonal options. An interesting tidbit: in the 1800’s, the Equinox Pond used to sell ice for refrigeration.

What To Do in the Area The Equinox makes provision for guests to try their hand at all kinds of recreational activities during all seasons: tennis, hiking, biking, cross-country skiing, fly-fishing at the Orvis School, and falconry.
