LET TER FROM THE PUBLISHER “Opening Up America” is beginning and “Distillery Channel Coffee Journal” wants to help. Our country, as we all know, has gone through some of the toughest and most unique epochs of all time. We want to help you recognize opportunities to “LIVE LIFE”. With the big box stores remaining open, it is now hard to find bikes, workout equipment, board

games, homestyle flower supplies and home repair items. Sounds to me like we are letting the new generation experience what it was like to be a “Baby Boomer”, and that, my friends are not all bad. Life was simple for us born from 1946-64. I fit in the early group of this era and my one son always asks what it was growing up. It was wonderful if you can look past the horror of Vietnam War and polio in the 1950’s.

Playing marbles, riding our bikes endlessly, coming home when the streetlights came on,

drinking from a hose, gardening, visiting with three generations of family, and enjoying meals every night with everyone sitting down around the table.

As a two-year-old I did play in a crib with a boy who later contracted polio. At the time, no one

knew what caused it, but I was just lucky, I guess. About 1960 we all lined up for our sugar cubes contained the vaccine at the time to cure this horrible disease. I remember long tables at the Masonic Temple in Freeport, Illinois and nurses administering each dose. The pandemic ended and we all grew up. We had no immunizations for mumps, chicken pox or measles.

We always try to feature a little escape filled with wonderful photos and adventures from around

the world. We want you to tell us your stories while being shut in during the past couple of months and hopefully find some bright spots you might cherish in the future years as you remember this time. So, reach for a cup of coffee and enjoy, Randy Weckerly Publisher

Hinge Points in History What Difference Did It Make? ALL the Difference Written By: Robert Mills

Hinge Points in History – Instances Where One Man, or a Single Event, Changed the Entire Course of History There have been moments in history

where a single determined person, or one natural event, forced destiny down one path instead of another – an event which forever changed what occurred afterward. This article, the first in a series for The Distillery Channel, explores examples of this history-shaping phenomena.

Eventually, the Danish invaders began to

build their own fortresses on English soil, which they initially relinquished for ransom, but they continued to gain in strength against the dispirited and disunited English kingdoms.

The Danish raiding grew more intense

with each year until, in 865, it escalated further with the terrifying arrival of what the English called the Great Heathen Army. This Viking army consisted mostly of Danes with a small contingency of Norwegians and Swedes. It was led by three brothers, Ivar the Boneless, Ubba, and Halfdan Ragnarsson. For the English, what made this army horrifyingly different from those before it was not just its size but its intent. Earlier invading armies had been content to just pillage, after which they returned home to Scandinavia. But Ivar the Boneless and his brothers intended to establish a permanent Viking settlement in the middle of England. Indeed, they intended to conquer and take over England.

It appeared that there was no one to stop

I. The Battle of Edington – Why We Speak English Instead of Norse Lured by its wealth, Danish Vikings first

invaded the British Isle in 793, attacking a monastery full of treasures on Lindisafarne, a small island off the northeast coast. At that time, the Anglo Saxons – Germanic tribes who had themselves conquered and settled in England in the 5th Century – lived in a patchwork of small kingdoms, ruled by weak monarchs. In the decades that followed, the frequency and ferocity of the Viking raids increased. These attacks soon spread all the way down the east coast of England as the raiders first assaulted, then sacked, and finally began to conquer and temporarily occupy towns and ports in each of the tiny English Kingdoms.

them. The invading army conquered the Kingdoms of Northumbria and East Anglia in 870. The Danish forces next turned their fury against Wessex, the leading and strongest English kingdom, where they killed its leader, Ethelred, in the battle of Merton.

Distillery Channel Coffee Journal

15

Ethelred was succeeded by his brother,

Alfred, who became the new king and military leader and the de facto leader of the English resistance. Shortly after, the Kingdom of Mercia collapsed under the Danish onslaught in 874, and along with it, the cohesion of the English military defense. The Great Heathen invasion, now under the command of Guthrum the Old, next seized Alfred’s winter fortress at Chippenham in 875, a humiliating defeat. The Vikings then pursued Alfred’s tiny and dispirited army almost without resistance, nearly capturing Alfred several times. Everything seemed lost.

Alfred was forced to retreat and hide with

his small force on a marshy island off the southern coast of Somerset. There, over the next two years, the charismatic and brilliant young leader recruited a new army of West Saxons. Alfred inspired his soldiers over bonfires at night with exhortations about defending their homeland and their native language, English, against the heathen invaders. He trained his new army and developed an audacious plan to attack the much larger force of Viking soldiers just before dawn when they would likely be deep asleep after a night of drunken revelry.

At first light on a day in early May, 878,

Alfred’s forces ferociously set upon the sleeping Danes at a meadow southwest of London called Ethandun where they “overthrew the pagans with great slaughter and smiting the fugitives”. This single battle completely reversed the imminent Viking conquest of all of England and preserved English independence.

Alfred’s victory was so decisive that he

forced the Danish leader, Guthrum the Old, to convert to Christianity, withdraw from Wessex entirely and agree, in the Treaty of Wedmore, to a division of the rest of England. In 886, Alfred, again on the offensive, captured London, another stunning success that brought all of the English people now under Danish rule to accept him as King.

Alfred’s military reforms made it difficult

for the Vikings to raid successfully and the threat they posed began to ebb. During his reign, Alfred instituted many civil reforms that strengthened England. He ordered that schools teach in English instead of Latin and ordered the translation of hundreds of Latin works into English. These actions strengthened and unified the English language. His enlightened leadership endeared him beyond his kingdom of Wessex to all the English people, who began minting coins by the end of his reign calling him, “Alfred, King of the English.”

The honorific title “Great” was added to

Alfred’s name by scholars in the 15th Century. Alfred the Great is the only English leader ever to have earned the title “Great”.

16 Distillery Channel Coffee Journal

Distillery Channel Coffee Journal

Was it not for Alfred’s dramatic victory in a meadow in southwest England in May, 878, would the English language now be a long forgotten Germanic dialect? Today, we would all be speaking some modern version of Old Norse. In the face of seeminglyinsurmountable odds, Alfred the Great showed that with enough courage and determination, one person can indeed change the course of history.

Opened in early 2013 there were two

STREAMSONG, Florida – The

combination of great land, a great visionary and great architects has produced many great resorts, transforming them into the next must play golf destination.

Award-winning Bandon Dunes Resort

on the West Coast of Oregon is perhaps the best modern example, but you could certainly add Pinehurst in the Sandhills of North Carolina, if you want to go back 100 years.

But the latest, greatest combination

is alive and well at the Streamsong Resort in remote brushy grounds of a huge 16,000 acre abandoned phosphate mine owned by the Mosaic company and championed by company executive Rich Mack, 90 miles southwest from Orlando, 70 miles Southeast from Tampa.

excellent links style, walking only layouts here, the Blue designed by Tom Doak and the Red crafted by Ben Crenshaw and Bill Coore. Both were immediately praised when the course opened and a third, the Black, which opened in September, 2017 and designed by Gil Hanse, who crafted the Olympic Golf Course in South America, was another big hit.

Both the Red and the Blue courses were

built over the site of a former giant phosphate mine by Florida-based Mosaic with striking, stark landscape, very few trees in sight, but thick underbrush, steep drop-offs around the greens and some strategically placed water.

“Golf Magazine” has already weighed

in on the resounding success of the courses which also includes a 200-room modern resort.

Do not even attempt to make this trip

without enough time, gasoline and a very good GPS, because you’re not stumbling on this hidden gem by accident, but those who make the journey will be quite pleased.

It has the Ben Crenshaw-Bill Coore Red Course, par 72, ranked the 10th best course you can play in the U.S. along with the Tom Doak Blue Course, par 72, No. 14, both top 100 Nationwide.

Each of the first two courses has a wide

open feel, but features trouble among the many bunkers, scrub grass, slick greens and occasional water features. The courses are also laid out adjacent to each other, giving you a chance to see their charms and troubles, from different fairways, enhancing the visual golf experience.

But many feel Streamsong saved the best

for last as Hanse, who is currently designing the new PGA Course in Frisco, Texas, the future site of the PGA of America headquarters, provided the big and bold Black Course, par 73 as a scene stealer for sure.

Many have tried to compare the three

course Streamsong Resort on the East Coast with the four course Bandon Dunes complex on the West Coast. While Streamsong will always lack an ocean Bandon has, Hanse’s Black course is likely the most fun you’ll have playing a championship layout outside of Pacific Dunes in Bandon.

The six-hole par 3 short course, The

Roundabout, is another fun, short game experience adjacent to the Black Course, a perfect bet settler, along with the elongated two-acre Gauntlet putting course.

In short, Streamsong is a complete golf

experience. It’s hard to reach (although not as hard as Bandon Dunes), but rewarding to find and well worth the effort to play pure, core golf, with no houses in sight. There are only great caddies, some unique halfway houses, 2 large clubhouses, a wonderful lodge, and plenty of non-golf activities.

Hanse crafted a thrilling roller coaster

golf design on a huge canvas, nearly 400 acres, four times the size of a normal golf course site, on this abandoned phosphate property with a separate modern clubhouse and intriguing piece of land.

While the majority of most golf courses

starts slowly and blandly, then steadily builds to a dramatic peak, Streamsong Black captures your attention right from the beginning. The par 5 first and par 4 second has the metal windmill to the right and behind the large green which features another huge collection of bunkers to the left and right with a narrow strip of grass in-between.

Holes three through six are a collection

At the Black course, Hanse and his

talented design team crafted a unique layout with five par 5 holes each with their own style and challenge which allows the course to play from 7,333 yards in the back tees to 5,293 on the forward markers.

of interesting and challenging par 4s (two), par 3s (one) and par 5s (one). The sixth hole, a par 4, is the most interesting as Hanse only has the hole play 342 yards from the back tees, 300 or less for most players. With a prevailing wind and few bunkers with no water, he tempts the big hitter to go for the green in one. All seems well except for a small well positioned bunker right in front of the green and a dramatic sloping green which will repel any mis-hit shots.

While other architects try to create golf

course drama with contrived settings, Hanse used his huge canvas to showcase the course and the stark landscape with little else needed. In fact, the only dramatic drop in elevation comes on the par 3 17th hole, which along with the par 5 18th, are two of the few holes where water comes into play.

To use the words of one course marshal, “it’s 300 bunkers with a golf course in the middle.”

It’s where the hundreds of bunkers

make up for the lack of water or many on course trees. In fact, one of the few distinguishing features looking out over the course is a large solo metal windmill which serves as an identifying mark for the layout and its exclusive Black merchandise. Photo Credit: Streamsong Resort/Larry Lambrecht

Distillery Channel Coffee Journal

One of the real talents of Hanse at this

course is the way he varies the size of the bunkers and where they are placed for various landing zones and attack angles.

The first par 3, the fifth, features another

huge waste area to the right of the green with another rollicking green which can send the balls in any direction.

In fact, trying to describe the Streamsong

Black course without using the words huge, massive or large-scale, would be like asking some professional speakers to give a motivational talk without using their hands. Tough, if not impossible to do.

But like most great courses the Black

melds one good hole into another good hole, one arresting view into another outsized layout until you’re left with a fantastic and fun 18-hole experience which you’re eager to repeat.

29

By the time you finish the par 5 18th and

walk up the small hill on the walking only course, to the glass encased modern clubhouse, you’ll be glad Hanse used a green grass canvas to produce a joy-filled 18 hole journey and didn’t turn to painting with a smaller backdrop.

The prolonged success of the

Streamsong Resort has led to talk of another course (Bandon Dunes just opened its fifth), but with the Red and Blue courses beginning in 2020 with modern bermuda grass Mach 1 greens, and the Black as beautiful as ever, there is no immediate need to rush golf ’s next must play destination.

Coffee Cuppings or Coffee Snobbery Written By: Randy Weckerly

Distillery Channel Coffee Journal

51

52 Distillery Channel Coffee Journal

Actually, it is testing and tasting of

coffee beans from raw and new stock. All coffees have different coffee “notes” which are the subtle and inner tastes of raw coffee beans.

“Coffee Cupping” can be a great way to

spend time with friends at home if you have a resource for ordering coffee. At Foy Estate Coffee, we find some of the world’s best new coffees coming from new crop lots which we then share after roasting on our website. To make this simple to understand: “coffee slurping” is another term for “coffee cupping”.

In today’s coffee-spirited-world now

with more time to spend learning what specialized coffee means to the intrigued coffee drinker, there resides in the corners of the coffee world “Coffee Cuppings”. I am going to relate the highlights and why it might be fun if you are one of those intrigued coffee drinkers who want the best experience served from a great cup of coffee.

Here’s a quote from days gone past:

“Whenever you cup test nickel-weight samples of a new chop from your jobber, grind to the fineness of corn-meal, have your cuspidor nearby, and remember that breaking the scrum is an important part of the test.”

That doesn’t make much sense to me

either. But it is dialogue from a different time of over a hundred years ago, describing coffee cupping. Long lost terminologies were “a cuspidor”- Portuguese for “spitter”; or the term crust replacing scrum. Are you intrigued with this “snobbery” or is it “taste-testing”?

Distillery Channel Coffee Journal

Here is the Shortest Version of a Coffee Cupping for Your Benefit: 1. Order 6 to 10 new fresh whole bean coffees. 2. Freshly grind the coffees and conceal which coffee is going to be tested. Have a master list. 3. Place grounds in a small bowl from multiple grinds. 4. Pour hot water in all bowls. 5. Let stand for a couple of minutes. 6. Brush off slurring on top of water with a small spoon. 7. Now you are ready to slurp the coffee and make noise while doing so. Have fun. 8. Note your judgement of the coffee, likes, dislikes and whether you would you order it again. 9. After each slurp, spit the coffee out, rinse mouth with water and try another coffee blend. 10. Judge qualities you like and don’t like about each coffee. 11. Share with notes with your friends. 12. You are now officially a Coffee Snob. 13. Have fun and order your favorite coffee.

Whatever you do to enjoy your coffee,

there is a lot to learn in the coffee world. We love every day when we receive a new batch of coffee beans to be roasted. The roasting is where the magic happens. Coffee is and always will be a magical way to start the day but knowing what goes into it before you receive your next cup can be extremely interesting or not. But if it is, you have joined the world of Coffee Snobbery.

Congrats and enjoy your next cup.

PRESS RELEASE Longtime Texas Golf Wedge Expert Terry Koehler Releases New Edison Forged Wedges to Challenge Golf Convention [April 30, 2020]. FORT WORTH -- After two years of development and testing, Edison Golf Company announced that they have begun crafting and shipping their revolutionary Edison Forged wedges, presenting golfers with a package of wedge technologies that significantly raise the bar for performance over conventional ‘tour design’ wedges.

The Edison Forged wedges were designed by Edison Chairman and Director of Innovation Terry Koehler,

a Texas golf wedge expert who has three decades of award-winning wedge design expertise. He also writes a popular blog as The Wedge Guy on GolfWRX and has built a 30-year track record of challenging traditional wedge design, as he points out how wedges have not evolved nearly as much as the clubs in every other category over the past 4-5 decades.

All Edison Forged wedges will be custom-built to order for each customer, from the Company’s assembly

and shipping operations center in Fort Worth.

Edison Forged Wedges were designed to address the major performance shortcomings of ‘tour design’

wedges, and have been proven through extensive robotic testing to deliver more penetrating trajectories and a level of forgiveness of mishits never before seen in the wedge category. That performance superiority is achieved through a markedly different distribution of mass across the back of the clubhead, which equalizes the smash factor more evenly across the face. A significant increase in spin is a side benefit of the dramatically improved gear effect provided by the Edison Forged design.

Distillery Channel Coffee Journal

59

The wedges depart from the normal industry procedure of developing wedges with the help of

tour professionals, who Koehler says have entirely different wants and needs than even the best amateur players. “Tour professionals spend thousands of hours honing their exquisite skills,” explained Koehler. “Essentially, they have learned how to mostly overcome and even leverage the shortcomings of their wedges. But robotic testing and live golfer research over the past 3o-plus years has proven to me that ‘tour design’ wedges are the most unforgiving clubs in our bags. Why should any golfer have to suffer with that kind of finicky performance?”

Edison Golf ’s extensive research indicates the vast majority of golfers fight ballooning

trajectories, inconsistent launch angles and severe penalties for mishits, and that most are confused by all the different specialized sole grinds. By focusing on these deficiencies of the basic ‘tour design’ that is common to nearly all wedges on the market, the Edison Forged wedges deliver extraordinary spin and more penetrating trajectories. But most importantly, they give any golfer a long/short dispersion pattern that is less than half the size of the leading ‘tour design’ wedges.

Koehler’s 30-year history as a wedge designer began in the early 1990s with his patented sole

design, which incorporated two distinct bounce angles in the sole of each wedge to deliver versatility for any lie and swing path. He pioneered raising the CG (center of mass) of wedges with Reid Lockhart®, and his EIDOLON® wedges of the early 2000s were the first to introduce CNC-milled grooves in mainstream wedges as well as thicker upper section of the wedge clubhead. Koehler’s design philosophies were further advanced with his breakthrough progressive weighting in the SCOR™ wedges of 2011-2014 and the Ben Hogan® TK wedges of 2015-2017. All of his companies have been based in Texas, in honor of his roots as a fourth-generation native Texan.

The Edison Forged wedges are custom-crafted for each golfer, and are available with a wide

range of shafts and grip options through the company’s website at www.EdisonWedges.com. By midsummer, Edison Golf will introduce a program for golf professionals to become Certified Fitters for Edison Golf, so that they may bring this breakthrough performance to their golfers.

The Edison Forged wedges are also backed by an unprecedented Performance Guarantee. The

Company will let you play your Edison Forged wedges for 60 days to see how they will improve your game; if you don’t agree, you can return them and the Edison Golf will replace them with any other wedges on the market you think you would like better.

“Very simply, the Edison Forged wedges were designed to improve scoring range

performance for golfers of any skill level,” proclaims Koehler. “No other wedges come close to these in bringing forgiveness to a category not known for it.”

60 Distillery Channel Coffee Journal

About Edison Golf Company Edison Golf Company was formed in early 2018 to

provide a platform for development of the Edison Forged wedges. Several rounds of prototypes were tested for nearly two years before the design was judged market ready. The prototypes and final production designs have been subjected to multiple rounds of independent robotic testing and live golfer reviews to prove every claim the Company makes about them. The company insists on the highest quality components and workmanship, and builds and ships all products from its facility in Fort Worth, Texas.

How to Ditch the All or Nothing Diet Mentality Written By Dina Garcia

Distillery Channel Coffee Journal

The beef I have with most healthy eating

articles is their “come on, you can do it too… and if you can’t it’s just not important enough to you”, self-righteous kind of vibe. As people, we feel enough shame… body shame, self-generated guilt, working parent guilt, and all of the pressures to juggle it all.

I hope you’ll find this article to have a

different tone. I’m not here to tell you what to do. I’m here to present you with ideas and leave it up to decide when and how you want to take action toward change. No guilt, no shame. On that accord here are:

5 Easy Ways Busy People Can Embrace a Healthy Lifestyle:

When you have weeks where you feel like you don’t have it together, it’s important not to beat yourself up. If you hold back from negative self-talk, you will begin to feel better (because our thoughts have a direct impact on how we feel).

If you feel better, from not beating

yourself up, it will be easier to change course and take a step in the right direction. If you identify as a perfectionist, then number 2 is for you.

2- Focus on 1 Small Thing at a Time and Celebrate Every WinThis is an oldie but goodie piece of

advice and way more valuable than you probably think. You see, taking small steps can feel pointless to a perfectionist, as if it’s not enough. But if you keep building 1 small habit after another, and celebrate every positive step– big or small, they will eventually lead to a lot of healthy habits.

You likely have a lot more years on this

1- Ditch PerfectionismA telltale sign that you are stuck in the

perfectionist trap is if you have an “all or nothing” mindset. One week your meal prepping for hours and every meal is meticulously planned, and the next week you’re flying by the seat of your pants beating yourself up for not giving it your all. You might be a less extreme version of that, but you get the point.

Even if you have a week where you are

on fire and doing things to a perfect plan, it’s important to recognize this may not be sustainable.

planet. Wouldn’t you rather build a healthy lifestyle over time that will stick with you for life, then to fall into the all or nothing mindset? If you build a new habit every 1-3 months, after a year you could have a lot of healthy habits in place.

It’s best to start with small things you

know you can achieve. So rather than say you are going to pack a super healthy lunch every day, start with just adding a vegetable to your typical lunch. Or if you want to eat a plant-based diet, don’t transition too quickly. Start with 2-3 vegetarian dinners per week. Then as you get more comfortable with recipes you can start including more meals.

78 Distillery Channel Coffee Journal

20 minutes a day of exercise on a

consistent basis is much better than going to the gym every day for a week then not going for 2 months. One small thing at a time that you know you can achieve then build from there.

3- Ditch Diets Your body does amazing things for you

every day. It’s okay if it isn’t the size or shape society and diet culture says it should be.

Furthermore, weight and health are not

as connected as we once thought. If you tend to choose foods because they are low calorie or are allowed on certain diet plans, see if you can shift your choices to be more intuitive and less “according to the rules/plan”.

What and how much do you need to feel

energized, comforted, satisfied, or whatever you are looking to get from food at that time? This mindset will help you to be more consistent in your food choices and help alleviate any food guilt that might be draining your energy.

4- Make Time For FunYou’re busy, I get it, and you might be

exhausted too. But think about this, how many things do you do on a regular basis that drain your energy? Probably a lot.

If you are always doing things that drain

your energy, you are just going to run out. Adding things into your life that are fun may not bring you more time, but they will recharge you, so the less fun stuff isn’t so draining.

Aim for small ways to have fun daily, like

funny memes or chatting with friends with the intention of not complaining but rather having fun. Then take it up a notch by adding in bigger bouts of fun on a regular basis like a weekend trip, a night out, date night, or a day trip to visit a new place.

Fun and laughter really are the best medicine.

5- Check Yourself Before Your Wreck Yourself Before embarking on any path of change, it is vital that you take some time to really think through what you want and why you want it.

If you don’t take the time to get clear on what you want at this particular time in life then you might

end up just beating yourself up if you fail, when the real reason you failed to begin with was that deep down other things were more important.

It’s totally okay if working late so you can get that promotion trumps going to the gym for the next

3 months. Though I still encourage you to find a way to participate in regular movement as it will help you to feel your best and perform better. Start small if you need to and re-read number 2 above. Only you know what is right for you at that time.

If living a healthier lifestyle is what you truly want to focus on right now, then you have to make that

become a core part of who you are, not something you are temporarily doing to reach some sort of goal. Back to number 2 again. Small progressive changes are more likely to stick long-term than radical unsustainable changes that leave you feeling inadequate when you can’t align your values with your actions.

implemented it into your life.

This country’s hopes were high for the

young undersized golfer and his performance at his first professional event. His heart was pounding heavy on the range that Thursday morning, but he looked at peace as he warmed up. Standing at 5 foot 5 inches, David was always underestimated as a young athlete, and he always proved how his big heart more than made up for his size.

Just before his tee time, we just discussed

controlling what he can control and letting the rest go, and above ALL have some fun, because you never know you will be afforded such a chance in the future.

David played valiantly, the extremely

The 2009 Moravia Silesia Open at

Prosper Golf Club near the city of Ostrava in the eastern region of the Czech Republic, was the scene for debut of a young phenom, David Prochazka: a “goliath” size tournament for a young man of 15 years old.

As his coach, I was really just so proud

that David had made it to his stage and I really wasn’t sure how he would react under this amount of pressure. David had already won player of the year in 2008 and had repeatedly played well when under pressure in international events. His confidence was soaring, and I was quietly skeptical if I am completely honest. I wasn’t sure if I had prepared him for such an event, as we had mostly worked on his technical game and only some of the mental preparation needed to play at such a level.

difficult course was made even more difficult as it rained for the first two days, which didn’t allow them to cut the rough, now deeper than most US Opens I had ever witnessed. David had fought well and was coming down the home stretch on Friday, trying to get under the cut line of +2, if that tells you how difficult the event was playing for the best players in the world.

As he stood there on hole 17, the cameras

started to pick up his story. The crowds had gathered to see their young phenom. The pressure at that moment was massive and was peaking as he prepared for the tee shot. He was at +2, right on the cut line, and feeling good about his game. He pulled his 3 wood on the short, drivable par 4, and hit a perfect tee shot right down the middle just short of the green, but the ball rook a horrible bounce directly to the right and went into very deep rough right next to a group of trees. It was horrible luck and should have left him just 40 meters to the flag. The search was on for David’s ball, but in the end, they never found it, even though there were so many people there trying to find it.

As his coach, I was beside myself, completely crushed, and my head was down as the referee said time was up. To my surprise, when I looked up, David was smiling at me. “Come on Coach” David said to me. “Maybe I can still make par?” …. well, he tried to drive the green, and didn’t succeed ultimately of making the cut in that tournament, but I was so proud of the young man. He truly conquered a foe that takes down many a great player, PRIDE. He showed humility and grace in that crushing moment, he showed professionalism and sportsmanship,… he had taken those couple of words before the first tee and truly did I his best to apply that throughout his journey that week. Control ONLY what you can control and have fun! David smiled and had a great attitude right up until the very last shot.

In my opinion, “David had slain Goliath” and this young man was on his way to greatness!

Players and coaches of all levels can learn

something from this moment, and most likely you learn more from these moments than we do from those mountain top moments. When will you have your David & Goliath moment on the course? Or maybe in life?

There was a moment here that David could have gotten visibly upset and lost it, but he didn’t. He never showed his frustration but took it as it came and was proactively doing the best, he could to make things right. Most young players are reactive in their thinking and actions, and it takes a lifetime to learn the humility and mindset that comes with understanding priorities and what’s important in life. Not many of us at 15 are ready for such a reality. For some of us, Goliath might something else, but no matter what it is, you can overcome. There’s an old mantra that we should all live by, it states…. “your life not defined by what happens to you on your journey, but rather how you react to what happens to you.”

In this great game of golf, as in life, there

are many lessons along the way, if we pay attention and continue to be open minded. Let’s all try and learn the lesson young David learned back in 2009, YOUR JOURNEY is the one that really matters.

In testing times like we are in now, with this giant crisis facing our planet, we can all find ways to be proactive, be positive and truly make a difference in the lives of others as well as our own!

Maui Travel is Complicated Written By: Randy Weckerly

Distillery Channel Coffee Journal

96 Distillery Channel Coffee Journal

I reached out to a friend of mine who is

an executive at one of the larger hotels in Lahaina, Maui, Hawaii and found out she wasn’t even on the island. What she told me of the experience on Maui was at best complicated and sad on another level as travel is being shut down due to the Covid-19 crisis.

My phone call found her at her home in

Wyoming as she has been there since the travel shut down began. She was on a vacation with her children and told not to return during this time. The islands of Hawaii were shut down in the harshest of terms. Native Hawaiians are recalling how measles devastated the indigenous people of the islands in 1848 and killed nearly 35 percent of the population.

I have traveled to Maui many times and the people of Maui maintain hookipa (hospitality) with the Aloha Spirit ever present. It is sad but understandable they want to protect the delicate balance of the island. Here is an excerpt a special message issued by from Governor David Ige on May 24, 2020.

Special Alerts:

COVID-19 as of May 24, 2020 12:00 P.M.

Hawaii has a long tradition of welcoming

visitors from around the world. The hookipa (hospitality) and Aloha Spirit that people feel as they explore our islands has become stuff of legends. At this time however, like many of you, we are focusing on the health and safety of our community, visitor industry employees, health care professionals and our healthcare system. As a small, remote island community, our residents are particularly vulnerable to the COVID-19 crisis. Hawaii Governor David Ige has asked that you postpone your trips to Hawaii to give us the opportunity to address this health crisis. To that end he has mandated a 14-day quarantine for all visitors and residents entering the state. In addition, the island mayors have over the past few days instituted home lockdowns except for essential personnel. Like all visitors to Hawaii, we would like you to experience the best the islands have to offer. Now, unfortunately, is clearly not the time.

The additional problem is how and when

to open the state for tourism as it is “the lifeblood” of the Maui economy. When the Covid -19 shutdown began, the island of Maui had only one ventilator so having an island full of Covid-19 related sickness was not an option. It is now mandating a 14-day quarantine for any individual arriving on Maui.

Here is the Update from the Governor’s Mandate: • On May 18, Governor David Ige issued an EIGHTH EMERGENCY

SUPPLEMENTARY PROCLAMATION to his Emergency Rules extending the mandatory 14-day quarantine through June 30 for all passengers (visitors and returning residents) arriving into the state of Hawaii. Additionally, operations that rent vehicles may not rent to any person who is subject to a 14-day traveler quarantine order unless an exemption is granted.

• The state of Hawaii’s website:

• SAFETRAVELS.HAWAII.GOV further explains the entrance and quarantine process. • The mandatory 14-day quarantine for all persons traveling between any of the islands has been extended to June 30. These mandates will remain in place until further notice.

You will also find that NO, ZERO,

ZILCH, NADA hotels are currently open. The stay at home order is in effect. Even going to the beach is difficult if living there.

Here is the latest update for beach activity: • Beach Closures: All beaches in Hawaii are

hereby closed. No person shall sit, stand, lie down, lounge, sunbathe, or loiter on any beach or sand bar in Hawaii.

• Transiting across or through beaches is

allowed to access the ocean waters for outdoor exercise purposes, such as surfing, solo paddling, and wimming, so long as social distancing requirements are maintained. • Running, jogging, or walking on the beach is allowed, so long as social distancing requirements are maintained.

We have friends in Hawaii and Daniel

Daniel Sullivan’s new book, “The Maui Coast Legacy of the Kings Highway”, chronicles his 200-mile hike around the coast of Maui in search of the ancient “Kings Highway”. His book includes over 200 pages of Maui photographs and a forward by American Poet, W.S. Merwin, whose passion for the natural world was reflected in his painstaking work as a conservationist in Hawaii where he made his home.

To support and enjoy this engaging book

while learning about the history of Maui, please consider ordering this book or other items from their store, Indigo Paia. You can also line up for a photography trip led by Daniel when the island opens up again on a photography trip while you visit Maui.

While the contiguous United States has

its own set of certain struggles, consider the Hawaiian Islands. We pray for a foreseeable end to this pandemic so our travel to Maui and the other islands can return. Mahalo.

Facebook Called Us!

The Distillery Channel Media Written By: Randy Weckerly

Distillery Channel Coffee Journal

109

Facebook called us in Spring 2019 and

that conversation helped us learn more about which changed our media and corporate delivery Facebook marketing. Here’s a little history to put this in perspective.

“The Distillery Channel” took over

seven years of combined marketing and e-commerce to experience a significant growth. “The Distillery Channel” is clean, contemporary and unique media experience. First, it was difficult to find a path and carve out a niche, without “buying” followers. When we did our media presentations, most of them were not viral by the nature and design of our productions.

Facebook sent me an email last year and

wanted to schedule a call. Our first reaction was we were being catfished by somebody saying they were Facebook. I ignored and deleted the email because I had never heard that Facebook would contact directly with companies. After ignoring multiple requests for an appointment, Miss Kira suggested I write them back since it could really be Facebook marketing team. It was Facebook contacting us to other more details about their marketing. This changed our life and our marketing actually deliverability.

We learned a lot and became more

We have produced over 1500 media

presentations, with our weekly podcasts of “Happy Hour Lifestyle Show” and “The Next Taste in Music”. Our entire podcast is sent to Buzzsprout for delivery multiple platforms of podcasting. Our podcasts are delivered on the nation’s major podcast platforms: iTunes, iHeart, TuneIn+Alexa, Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcast, Stitcher, Podcast Addict, Deezer, Listen Notes, Overcast, Castro, Pocket Cast, and Castbox.

accessible since that time. We never knew how we could use our media to grow from there and in the future. Miss Kira and Ole Uncle Randy videos were getting organically an open rate of over 43%. We found out from Facebook that was a spectacular percentage! We grew from there, having multiple conference calls from the Facebook marketing team since that first phone call. We were given the keys to Facebook marketing for our company and extended it to our focus on The Distillery Channel Members. Our media teams focus on our advertisers in our magazine and media productions.

110 Distillery Channel Coffee Journal

We now have proven the power of our

Facebook marketing platform combined with media productions and focus on our “The Distillery Channel Productions”. In January 2020, we helped Geneva Illinois Chamber of Commerce market their “Restaurant Week” which supported over 23 restaurants and local retail shops. We set the demographics to attract people living in the surrounding area and downtown Chicago to travel to Geneva for the event.

The end result was about a 27-35%

increase in business during “Restaurant Week” over past years. On reviewing the

successful results with the Geneva, Illinois Chamber of Commerce Executive Team and the individual restaurant owners, our media was applauded for delivering such successful results!

We have been asked multiple times over

the years to help our “The Distillery Channel Platform” partners market their beers, wines, distilled products and shop items. Our online magazine encompasses the world finest technology which our Editor in Chief, Miss Kira, incorporates into the design of every issue. When we use the entire platform on Facebook, we can cover selected demographics over the entire United States. The economics and ROIs are extremely attractive. Our media productions on Facebook and other social media platforms are “homey and authentic” online live interviews which brings to life our media partners.

Distillery Channel Coffee Journal

At the country is opening up once again,

we can bring our “Facebook Split-Screen”, “Happy Hour Lifestyle Show” and “The Next Taste in Music” podcast presentations right into the business establishments of our advertisers and platform members. We integrate these presentations with the Facebook algorithm and artificial intelligence benefits. When combined with our media presentations, we can create a Nationally unique delivery of magnitude.

Coffee Journal Entry Written By: Randy Weckerly

Distillery Channel Coffee Journal

117

I have recently come across this painting

which reminds me so much of my time with my grandfather, Nevin Foy. We spent every weekend together, either at Lake Kegonsa, Wisconsin or at his home in Freeport, Illinois. My days were safe and enjoyable on every level. We did simple things every weekend. But every weekend was with him and that is all that mattered.

If we were at the lake in the spring, first

item on the to do list was Pop Pop’s list of what he needed to fix, repair, or purchase to get ready for the up-coming summer. If it was summer, readying the ski boat, fishing gear and buying bait was high on the list. We fished every day and our lure was a number 7 gold Hildebrandt Spinner and a chunk of frozen shrimp on the hook.

Pop Pop was the ultimate entrepreneur,

traveling the Midwest. With his job during the week designing and selling retail packaging to Hormel or other meat producers stretched. His territory from Illinois to North Dakota, and points in between. I mention his extended weekly travel schedule, as he was always able to make it back every Thursday, so he could mow his yard and pick me up at Blackhawk Grade School in Freeport, Illinois.

His German heritage made him exact in

his timing as he was there for me at the front door of grade school at 3:32 P.M. every Friday. Even though I lived only four houses away, I took my small overnight bag to school, so we didn’t have to delay our 60-minute trip to Lake Kegonsa.

Friday and Saturday mornings were

special to me. The chore list and spending time in the garage with him, at either his home or the lake, always included some quiet time after chores. The garage offices were both different but similar. Both had a slight tinge of oil and gasoline vapor in the air, an old identifiable smell of my time with him, as garages had dirt floors which emanated earthy tones and distinct similar neverending dampness. He had a workbench with most tools needed for chores including endless glass jars repurposed to hold screws, nuts and bolts he found or purchased and other unidentifiable gizmos he kept in others. His workbenches had vices, saws, chisels, sandpaper and multiple tools on old shelving where it was inevitable that one of us would get the proverbial embedded splinter over the weekend.

118 Distillery Channel Coffee Journal

To this day my fascination of birds never

wanes. I feed, photograph and draw birds. And as when I was young, we always started with unique pictures of birds. My grandfather would always buy paint supplies, or a kit with a native bird like a cardinal, blue jay or finch collection. Of course, my painting skills were that of a six-year-old, but in his mind, they were some of the world’s best. He was quite an artist in his own right, with his focus on birds from around the world.

I am including pictures I have collected

Both weekend garage offices had one

more item in common, a desk area where we did our artistic oil paintings. This time was cherished by me. We would always play one game of checkers and then get out our painting kits. He loved paint by number kits. He considered paint by number contrived non art, so he demanded for us to use creative license. He considered going outside the lines the highest form of art! His encouragement probably led me to living outside the lines today, or at least always trying to be creative in all I do and seek to accomplish. He had two major focuses for his canvas: cowboys on bucking broncos and birds. I like water and lake settings, but I did develop my lifelong passion for birds during this time.

in the recent months to begin painting once again. To simply enjoy the art department retail store of Northern Illinois University in Dekalb, Illinois has been fun. The aromas of oils immediately recall my childhood memories. My artwork today simply needs plain canvas board and pictures of my subjects. Hence, all of the birds you see featured in this article have been or will be a focus of upcoming artwork.

You can be an artist too. I suggest during this time while we are challenged by isolation.

Simply begin with a blank sheet of paper and pencil. And remember, as my grandfather taught me, this is a judgment free zone. If you don’t like what you create, throw it away and begin again. You will get better or not. But I will guarantee one-thing, you will use a part of your brain generally not used in our everyday life. It’s the side of your creative mind, and in honor of my grandfather, I encourage you to discover within yourself this moment of Zen while you reflect on trying to create something as beautiful as what you are looking at in these pictures of birds.

Have fun. It’s ok. Even in this world.

I’ve been golfing for over fifty years and

have given thousands of lessons to many generations of new golfers. If you are looking for some training tips, please take time to check out “Total Golf Trainer” at TGTVideo.com. You will be impressed.

When opening the carry-on box from

“Total Golf Trainer” (TGT) I thought, another box of colorful plastic, I have to figure out how to use. I held it on my desk waiting for a slowmoving Spring 2020 cool rainy weather to move on to a day that’s above 70s.

I became interested in working with

“TGT” after looking at the video on “hip rotation, syncing up the upper body arms and waist speed”. I had just been working with a 6 handicapper on this issue. I found a YouTube Video from “TGT” giving an overview of this issue at https://youtu.be/LOWAd9Z6OSQ.

“TGT” quantifies for the golf trainer and

student, what we typically had to draw in mental pictures and words for both the problem, and the solution during a lesson. “TGT” videos put these pictures and images in 3D action, while guiding your student to the right positions; and additionally, explaining why a certain approach to a swing is correct.

My common belief (now go into golf

geekdom to explain) is that angles are mostly fundamental during any golf swing from PGA Professionals to new students: 1.) “Throwing the Club” from the top. 2.) “Wrist Hinging and Pronating” correctly. 3.) “Angles at Setup” and through the swing of forearms and wrists in full swings. 4.) “Foreword Press” at setup and through chipping motion. 5.) “Covering the Ball” during the swing. 6.) “Syncing” the waist and upper body through rotation.

Here is a link “TGT” YouTube Channel of

multiple videos to begin your journey. https:// bit.ly/3dtIzlX

I believe if you look, you will find the

descriptor of the video you need to watch for your particular question of the day. Most of these problems are addressed in their videos on YouTube.

Don’t be bashful taking devices to the practice tee. You will not look funny or geeky, as many

PGA Professionals have training devices. They are used every day during every practice and before teeing off prior to professional tournament rounds. Alignment rods, towels under our arms, and beach balls in the forearms are a few of the devices one can see every day on the range. The design of this product is well thought out including the then style of the lightweight carrying case, and the YouTube Videos that to make every day a learning day at the golf course. I strongly advise getting some instruction beforehand so, in the long run you’ll learn the right way to use this product. You can learn most on your own at the range with “Total Golf Trainer”.
