Give it a Go (GIAG) is a great way to get involved in fun activities in and around Newcastle! This booklet shows you all the activities planned between now and the Easter holidays! ALL sessions are open to ALL students, you don’t need to be a member, just sign up to whatever you’d like to do and GIVE IT A GO! Give it a Go (GIAG)

How to Book

Give it a Go is an activities programme run by your Students’ Union which offers you the opportunity to try something new, learn new skills, and meet new people. Whether you’re racing around a Go Karting track at 60mph, or relieving your stress with a massage session, there really is something for everyone, so GET INVOLVED!

We highly recommend you book EARLY to avoid disappointment! You can book online at www.nusu.co.uk/giag or come in and see us in the Activities Centre on Level 1 of the Students’ Union. PLEASE NOTE: All free events unless otherwise stated require a £5 deposit which will be returned when you attend the event.

Is the January exam season proving a bit stressful? Post-holiday blues getting you down? Come and join us for a bit of relaxation to get you through the exam period and take away some relaxation techniques to help you through a busy term.

With exam season tailing off, come and join Give it a Go for a relaxing yoga session. With both beginners and experienced people in mind, this is open to anyone and everyone wanting to de-stress before the rest of term begins.

Massage Sessions Another exam period stress-buster from Give it a Go. Come and work out those knots and stresses with our massage therapist, and get yourself back in a stress-free, ready for work state of mind.

Give it a Go’s first big trip of 2014! Come to Nottingham with us, home to some of England’s richest history and the centre of Robin Hood country! Nottingham castle, a city of caves, not to mention a beautiful city await, book your place now!

One of only 27 flowriders in the world, this is an experience that you can only have in 3 places in the UK. Great value and indoors, join the Newcastle surf club for a winter water classic!

A favourite at Give it a Go, come and see some of the North East’s best amateur comedians take the stage for a night that promises entertainment!

4x4 Driving Using ex-Army Land Rovers, specifically produced for tough terrain, this is a 4x4 experience with a difference. Deep water, steep hill climbs, and slippery downhill sections, this is a great way to test your driving skill. Be aware - places are very limited!

Language Taster Session- German Join the Modern Languages Society for their first language taster session of term and try your hand at German! Beginners welcome; come and join some native speakers and experience a new language.

Guest Speaker- Brain Injury Organised by Newcastle’s Neurological and Psychology societies, come and meet an individual who has gone through a life changing brain injury. Talking about both his injury and his life post-injury, it’s a very interesting talk that is not to be missed!

Knit4Fun Join Give it a Go on a very popular course and get used to the basics of knitting. It’s still pretty cold outside, and knitwear is arguably the answer! Beginners are welcomed, and the instructors will be there to take you through the basics on this two session course.

Newcastle Farmers’ Market Come and taste some of the finest local produce from Newcastle and the surrounding area. A market exclusively for traders from the North East, this is a great opportunity to pick up some great local produce that you won’t be able to find in your local Tesco!

Glasgow Join Give it a Go on another of their ever popular city trips to Glasgow! Scotland’s largest city and Britain’s second city for much of the time after the Industrial Revolution, come and see a city rich in history and culture, and one that isn’t on the traditional UK tourist trail.

Victoria Tunnels

Improvised Comedy Workshop

A firm favourite with Give it a Go, places will go fill up fast! Take a tour of Newcastle’s hidden underground tunnels, and learn some lesser known histories of the city! These trips always sell out, book your place early!

A very popular activity hosted by the University’s very own Comedy Society, come and try your hand at some stand up! Including group role plays and one to one dialogues, this is sure to have you laughing, whether you’re trying it out or taking part!

Circus Skills

Cookery Course

Come and join Newcastle’s very own Circus Skills society for two different workshops, showing you how to wow your friends with a variety of circus skills. You’ll even be making your own equipment from scratch so you can take it home and practice.

Join Give it a Go and the charity FoodNation and make yourself some grub! The experienced instructors will supply all of the ingredients and will teach you how to make some impressive dishes to wow your friends with when they’re burning their baked beans at home! You’ll be able to take the recipes away with you too, VERY good value for money.

Language Taster Session- Arabic The second taster session of the term, this time it’s Arabic! A language with around 300 million native speakers, it is a very useful language to learn. Try your hand at it at this event for free!

Wildlife Photography of the Year Expo The world’s most prestigious showcase of wildlife photography is coming to Newcastle, join Give it a Go to experience some incredible scenes of the natural world, highlighting our planet’s extraordinary diversity.

Language Taster Session- Spanish Another one of the ever popular language tasters, this time it’s the turn of Spanish, the second most spoken language after English. Come and mix with some native speakers and try your hand at a new language!

Top of the Monument Tour

York Another one of Give it a Go’s popular city trips! Join us on a trip to York, one of the most iconic cities in the north of England, rich in history, culture, and character. Described by some at Give it a Go as the greatest city in the world, come and see if they’re right!

One of the most popular events last term, join Give it a Go for a trip up to the top of Grey’s Monument. By special appointment only Give it a Go have gained access to the inside of the monument, and with the help of a guide can climb the long staircase to the top. Book your place quickly before it sells out!

Go Ape Join us for another Give it a Go and Freshers’ favourite! It’s like a leisurely stroll through the woods but with one small difference, you’re 10 metres above ground swinging from ropes. Great value and a great activity, get in touch with your inner Tarzan!

Easter Egg Hunt

Start off Give it a Go’s Sport Relief Weekend with a bang, come and try ZUMBA! This fast paced fitness party incorporates dance and fitness to get the blood pumping, feet moving, and heart racing, all with an inspirational instructor and a great soundtrack! Best of all, it’s FREE!

The Give it a Go Easter Egg hunt will be on all this week. Hidden around campus will be special Give it a Go egg tokens, all of which are worth a prize! Find as many as you can and bring them to the Activities Centre on the Friday to claim your prizes!

Go Karting

The final language taster this term, come and experience Japanese! Always a popular language with students, come and see why, finish off the term with trying something new!

Paintballing Showdown

Go get your friends and sign yourselves up to this - this is karting with a difference! Join Give it a Go for a team endurance race round the nationally renowned Karting North East track. One of the biggest and fastest circuits in the UK, you’ll be hitting speeds of 60mph on the straight, not to be missed!

Give it a Go are taking 53 people for a day of high adrenalin paintballing, bring your friends, pick your teams, and get involved! This great price includes a whole day paintballing, lunch, and 200 paintballs. With 53 students either head to head or forming one team, it’s going to be a day that’s not to be missed!

Basketball: Casual

Thursday Night Basketball Jam Shoot some hoops and meet other ball players - no booking required, just turn up! Half court games and general gameplay: £2 a session! Fortnightly on Thursdays 6-8pm at Royal Grammar School (next to Jesmond Metro). Alternating Thursdays with ‘Thursdays Football’ – basketball starts on 30th January

Cardio Tennis and Short Tennis Learn to play tennis and get fit too! Beginners and those who haven’t played recently are very welcome. Short Tennis: Beginner lessons on small courts with sponge balls – super-fun and easy way to learn! Cardio Tennis: a tennis themed aerobic workout with tennis movements and hitting balls for fitness! Horses? In the city? That’s right! A lovely stable will give you 5 weeks of beginner lessons. Please note: the full course must be attended - it is not possible to book single sessions. Please make sure you sign up in time to start the course! Includes riding boots and hat and full lessons. This full 5 week course costs £75. Only 6 spaces per session, so please make sure you sign up in time!

Learn the essential movements of Parkour and Free Running, like jumps, rolls and vaults, as well as the more acrobatic flips PLUS two trampolines and a foam pit to help you gain momentum! This has to been seen to be believed – check out the website or Facebook to see a video of this awesome session. EVERYONE can try it – amazing fun for all, and a great way into sport. Transport provided to Gateshead.

Ski and Snowboard Always wanted to try it, but can’t afford a trip to the mountains? Take the easy option! Come with us for beginner sessions on the dry slope, all equipment and transport provided. You can choose either SKI or SNOWBOARD sessions – email us for dates available.

Basketball Just for the ladies! Suitable for complete beginners and those who want to brush up their skills! Coaching provided. Come and play, even if you’ve never picked up a ball before! Brilliant for fitness, and you’ll learn some new skills too.

Climbing Beginner level course in the city centre! Please note: the full 6 week course should be attended it is not possible to book single sessions. Please make sure you sign up in time to start the course! Includes tuition and equipment. Two sessions to choose from: Wednesday 6-8pm

Netball Ladies ‘Back to Netball’ – doesn’t matter if you haven’t played since Year 9, this is a great one for girls who want to play some games and stay fit! Tuesday 5-6pm

Sign Me Up! For everything except the ‘turn up and play’ sports, you need to book a place (as space is limited). To sign up, just come into the Students’ Union Activities Centre (1st floor) or sign up online at www.nusu.co.uk/goplay . For most sports you can pay for just one week, or all 6 – the choice is yours! Remember - you don’t need any experience or equipment – every session is suitable for beginners and all equipment is provided.
