Give it a Go (GIAG) is a great way to try out fun activities in and around Newcastle! This booklet shows you all the activities planned for the second term, and should entertain you up until Summer! All sessions are open to ALL students, so you do not have to be a member of anything to get involved!

How to book onto a session While not every session requires you to book in advance, we recommend that you do to avoid disappointment if a session becomes too full and we have to turn you away!

Please email us at giag.union@ncl.ac.uk to book your spaces. Please ensure that you include details in your email of which session you are interested in, for how many people and all participants’ full names and ncl email addresses.

Baltic

First Aid

Wednesday 18th April, 2pm, FREE

Wednesday 2nd May, 2.30pm, FREE

Come and explore our very own nationally renowned modern art gallery, which recently hosted the Turner Prize event 2012! Will be showing work from Elizabeth Price, Andrea Zittel and On Kawara as well as the much talked about Flow project on the River Tyne…

NUSU’s own LINKS society will teach you the basics of First Aid in this informative session that might help you one day to save a life!

Rounders

Saturday 5th May, 9am, £7

Wednesday 25th April, 2pm, FREE A classic British summer sport, I’m going to go out on a limb and declare Rounders the best sport there is. Similar to American Baseball, it involves a bat, a ball, and 4 bases – come and play (hopefully) in the sunshine! No previous experience necessary.

Victoria Tunnels Friday 27th April, 12.15pm, FREE Another chance for all you who missed out last term; Unbeknown to most residents, Newcastle has a system of underground tunnels below the city (not the metro!!) that have been used for transportation of coal, and as shelters from the terrors of World War II. Come and explore these secret tunnels with a guided tour where you will learn much more about the city you now call home. A must see – sells out FAST.

Windsurfing

Come and try out an excellent sport with the Kite and Windsurf Club! This session will be a 2/3 hour lesson delivered by trained instructors at a lake in a local country park. Your price includes transport, all equipment and the teaching – you do not need any experience of windsurfing to take part in this taster session, but you must be able to swim. This is a great activity to try and you might find a new favourite sport!

Student Wellbeing Day Wednesday 9th May, 10am – 4pm, FREE Give it a Go is working with the Student Wellbeing service over at the University to promote the importance of staff and student welfare and happiness at University with this entire day dedicated to making you feel happier at Uni! We will have Indian Head Massages available all day, FREE OF CHARGE, just turn up to NUSU to get one!

Culture Challenge; Beach Challenge Day Friday 11th May, 1pm. FREE (will need to buy metro ticket/pass) An exciting afternoon of beach-related challenges including Ultimate Frisbee, team games and building giant sand sculptures. Taking place at Tynemouth beach. Bring a picnic or grab some fish & chips.

Meditation Wednesday 16th May, 1pm, FREE Exams stressing you out? Need your mind clearing and your brain relaxed?! Come to Give it a Go’s free meditation session. You will be taught by an experienced meditation teacher, who will guide you through some easy meditations that you can also use at home. It’s simple and anyone can Give it a Go!

Massage Session Wednesday 23rd May, 12-4pm, £3 for a 20 min session Nearly there! Exams are in the last week, so take some time to get some relaxation for both body and mind with a 20 minute massage from our professional masseuse. You can choose if you want Reiki, all over (clothed) massage, head and neck…the list goes on. Come and feel those exam stresses melt away…

Zumba

The Brazilian dance craze that’s sweeping the nation! A fun and funky way to keep fit, Zumba’s Brazilian beats will have you shaking your ass like a crazy thing…

Extravaganza Wednesday 30th May, from 1pm, FREE Give it a Go, Go Play and Culture Challenge are all combining in one huge extravaganza event outside, inside and all around your Union! Details are currently top secret so watch out for more information nearer the time, or email giag.union@ncl.ac.uk to book your space and trust us…you’ll have fun…

Street Cheer Thursday 7th June, 2pm, FREE Street Cheer is a mix of cheerleading and hip hop that incorporates cheerleading cheers and chants alongside street style moves and elements such as locking, popping, and freezes. Street Cheer enables participants to develop skills in the areas of team work and self-confidence whilst experiencing the fun of physical activity. Whether it’s your first time trying cheer/street dance or you are a seasoned pro, there is something for everyone.

Come along and meet employers from a wide range of sectors offering immediate graduate positions, as well as organisations offering further study and training opportunities. The fair is open to students and graduates from any university and all degree disciplines. Newcastle Graduate Recruitment Fair is a national event organised by Newcastle University Careers Service.
