30 THE 'STAYCATION'
LAST year's Capital of Culture gave us the chance to show the world what Liverpool is about but just because it's 2009 doesn't mean we should stop blowing our own trumpets. Not ones to miss an opportunity to wax lyrical about the city we love, the team here at the Liverpool Echo decided to launch Best of Liverpool - a fresh new 32-page magazine aimed at celebrating all the fabulous things we have here from fashion and bars to restaurants and beauty salons to homegrown food and talented people. As this year is the Year of the Environment we've come over all green and outdoorsy and have some great ideas on how to get the best of the summer - alfresco style. We've sent out papperazzi guys out to find out what you're up to and have been testing the best beer gardens and feeding our faces at the city's top Italian restaurants - all for you of course! And talking of tasty, we managed to blag an interview with the very lovely David Morrissey as well as throwing in some amazing competitions. So tuck in and enjoy our very first issue of Best of Liverpool. Happy summer!

ON THE COVER Big thanks go to the totally talented Zoe at Zoe Photography for supplying us with the stunning image of Miss Liverpool for our front cover which was shot in the very grand Knowsley Hall. Based at Knowsley Hall park, Zoe turned to photography after working in human resources for 20years - but HR’s loss was the visual arts’ gain. Zoe has won all kinds of awards for her images including the North West Environment Portrait Photographer of the Year, but her passion is for fashion and she’s also been hailed Fashion Photographer of the Year and Studio Portrait of the Year in the North West. With the launch of the Cecil Beaton: Portraits Exhibition at the Walker Art Gallery, Zoe has been invited to showcase her work to demonstrate how contemporary photographers are influenced by 20th century snappers. She will be holding portrait sessions there and doing gallery tours and a photography workshop. See more of her work at www.zoephotography.co.uk

A new national museum for the people of Liverpool at the Pier Head will be launched in 2010. The Museum of Liverpool will have key themes - Port City, Creative City, People’s City and Global City - and is expected to attract over 750,000 visitors a year.
AN EATING EXPERIENCE
We’re looking forward to the expansion of the Quarter Kitchen this autumn which promises a feast of homemade cakes, wraps, paninis, salads and traiteur dishes. Already a popular hang-out for the Liverpool creative set, (expect to bump into artists, actors etc. Even the great Yoko Ono has visited for a pizza!), the Hope Street venue will be a fab place to stock up on all those larder essentials including, cheese, bread, milk, eggs, seasonal fruit and vegetables, as well as some special treats.

Bigger than Klimt
Michelle Rushton takes a look at what’s new in the city that never sleeps TATE Liverpool recently unveiled their new exhibition for 2010, teasing us with the promise: “it will be even bigger than Gustav Klimt.” And it sure is - Picasso: Peace and Freedom will reveal a fascinating new insight into the artist’s life as a tireless political activist and campaigner for peace, challenging the widely-held view of the artist as creative genius, playboy and compulsive extrovert. ● Over at Liverpool Women’s Hospital, TV chef Simon Rimmer has been making mealtimes a lot more pleasant for new and expecting mums by creating a brand new menu. Patients can now look forward to real ‘comfort food’ such as Scouse, beef Bourgignon and veggie kedgeree. ● One of Best of Liverpool’s fave bars, Alma de Cuba was crowned Best Bar at this year’s ● Meanwhile, Dame Ellen Macarthur will be launching another first for Liverpool. The internationally renowned solo long-distance
yachtswoman will raise the mast on a brand new, state-of-the-art Sail Dive Centre at Oakmere Community College in Liverpool on August 14. ● Currently enjoying a bit of a summer break (and who can blame them), Live Lounge, Liverpool’s new intimate music venue at Baby Blue will be back with a bang shortly with a list of top bands and artists from the UK touring circuit. We have Finley Quaye to look forward to on August 16. ● Those scary characters at Shiverpool have commissioned Digital Salad, specialists in multimedia production, to develop a short film for their website that showcases their incredible haunted city tours. Visit www.shiverpool.co.uk if you dare! ● If you’re trying to ditch the evil weed, pop into the new specialist stop smoking clinic on Liverpool’s Rodney Street. Katie Glen, consultant hypnotherapist and owner of Instinctive Hypnotherapy Liverpool reckons she can help people

The campaign, which resulted in the city attracting more than £200m in global media coverage in '08, has been recognised in both the SABRE and CIPR Excellence Awards. ● And another well done goes to Danielle Gannon at Atmosferik Photography who has done a superb job on the new Liverpool Vision Prospectus taking stunning images of Liverpool. ● Oh and the guys at Free 08 Card are urging us to keep hold of our cards. Originally launched to celebrate the Capital of Culture year, they can still be used to enjoy fantastic savings, priority updates, ticket deals and 'what money can't buy' competitions.

oss cool when you’re The secret to looking Kate M cLoughlin knee deep in mud by Katie M
LOOKING chic when you’ve got dressed in a tent is no easy feat, yet ever since Kate Moss was papped looking effortlessly glam in a micro-shorts, waistcoat and wellies combo at Glastonbury, we’re all desperate to look fabulously fashionable - even when we’re knee-deep in mud. So with Creamfields rapidly approaching, what’s the secret to sartorial success at festivals? The key is to make sure your outfit caters for all weathers and your overall look is relaxed and not overly groomed. Choose one statement piece, like an 80s-inspired batwing top, and pair with festival staples such as cut-off denim shorts and patterned wellies. Remember Daresbury isn’t known for scorching temperatures, even in August, so make like Alexa Chung, Daisy Lowe, Jaime Winston et al, and look for simple yet stylish layers that can be taken on/off depending on the weather. And, if you want to avoid looking like Swampey in the mud, make sure you choose practical yet fashion-forward footwear like a pair of funky wellies or this summer’s must-have - fringed ankle boots. Accessories can transform even the simplest of outfits, so whether you opt for a floral summer dress and wellies combo or channel your inner rock chick in denim hotpants, a vintage printed tee and statement leather jacket; don’t forget to add functional yet style-savvy accessories.

FASHION FORECAST Liverpool ladies lead the way at the races. Emma Thompson takes her binoculars to find out what they are wearing in the Tattersalls.
BOLDER THE BETTER LIKE the 80s revival, this summer's accessories are all about bold colours and making big statements. From oversized cocktail rings, tribal necklaces and large brooches to be-jewelled earrings and bracelets, statement jewellery works best teamed with plain or simple outfits. And, unless you want to look like you've been taking fashion advice from Pat Butcher, remember to stick to the 'no more than two items at one time' rule. No outfit is complete without the latest must have arm-candy nestled proudly on your shoulder either. Whether it's a long and strappy quilted-bag worn slung across your body or a small and squishy style as seen by Miu Miu, Prada and Louis Vitton, this summer belongs to the handbag. Head scarves, hats and pony tail tubes are also tipped to be worn by those in the know, and ladies with an aversion to heights should beware, as sky high heels are once again be dominating the summer shelves. And of course the obligatory oversized sunnies are a must for any summer jewellery box - we say long live Jackie O! IVERPOOL'S fashion sense was a firm favourite at Chester Racecourse's annual Best Dressed Ladies competition. With Hollyoaks stars Ricky Whittle and Carley Stenson judging the competition, along with a panel of top fashion judges from Karen Millen, Coast and Dove Spa, the ultimate prize went to Zoe Burns from Liverpool. Although competition was tough with over 500 applicants registering, Zoe (right) impressed with her dedication to fashion and elegance, wearing a beautiful, floor length Kate Moss for Topshop dress, which she had actually queued outside the store from 4am to buy! Her shoes were by legendary shoe maker Terry de Havilland, described by the fashion set as the shoe of the season. When asked what they were looking for on the evening Carley Stenson from
Hollyoaks says: “We were looking for something that no-one else has got. Something completely different but that also shows lots of effort as well as looking good.” Ricky Whittle, her partner and co-star, adds: “Life should be about feeling good and always looking your best. We were after someone with a real love of fashion, who has worked hard to look good and look their best.” Zoe Burns’ style really stood out above the rest and she was rewarded with a £1,000 Trafford Centre gift card, £500 Karen Millen voucher and £200 Coast voucher. Additional prizes were supplied by Tessuti Woman, Dove Spa and Restaurant 1539, while runners up all received tickets for the next race meeting. But what were the judges themselves wearing? We went along to discover what Carley and Ricky's fashion secrets are and what they couldn't live without.
STRONGLY FANCIED Ricky Whittle
FINE FILLY Carley Stenson
Describe what you were wearing on the day?
I chose this pink Lipsy dress as it’s dead easy to wear, simple yet modern and a lovely colour. I added the little belt just to jazz it up a bit. The shoes are from Matalan – I’m a bit of a bargain babe and believe you don’t have to spend a fortune to look good.
A Hugo Boss suit – most of my suits are Hugo Boss I’m quite a big fan. In fact today I'm ‘Hugo’ all over as my tie is from there too! My shoes though are from Dune, they always have a great collection.
Do you get to shop in Liverpool? What are your favourite shops?
I shop in Liverpool and Manchester – since Liverpool One opened I’ve bought quite a few things from there. I like stuff from Diesel and Abercrombie and Fitch. I like individual pieces too so always look out for smaller boutiques and love shopping abroad, especially New York.
What is your favourite piece of clothing?
Ugg boots; they are the comfiest thing in the world. I was actually one of the first people to wear them - me and Justin Timberlake!
What fashion accessories can't you do without?
I love belts, big bold belts. I always tuck my shirt in at the front so you can see the buckle. I will often even wear two belts, one to keep my pants up and the other to hang down low on my waist!
Describe what you were wearing on the day?
Do you get to shop in Liverpool? What are your favourite shops? I shop everywhere – Liverpool and Manchester. I love All Saints and Lipsy, it's great, one has just opened in Liverpool One. I’m also a big fan of River Island and Topshop.
What is your favourite piece of clothing?
That’s a difficult question – it’s normally the last thing I bought! If I had to choose one piece though I would say it was the dress I wore for my 21st birthday which was specially designed for me.
What fashion accessories can't you do without?
Definitely jewellery. I tend not to wear it in work as we always get stripped bare of all our jewellery before filming on the Hollyoaks set. I love big earrings though, or anything that adds a bit of sparkle!
What is your key summer outfit? Things that you can just throw on are key for me; a jumper or a dress - it's all about comfort in the summer.

Sarah Hooley uncovers the secret to super toned thighs
WE all know the dangers of dabbling on sunbeds or spending too much time in the sun, so this year, Cancer Research UK's annual SunSmart campaign has invited international make-up artist Jemma Kidd to pass on her top tips to safe, natural beauty.
1
The main reason for premature ageing of the skin is sun damage. This can cause fine lines and wrinkles, age spots, thread veins and pigmentation. The biggest risk from over exposure to the sun though is skin cancer, so protect your skin from the sun’s rays when you’re out and about by wearing a broad spectrum sunscreen with SPF of at least 15.
WHERE IS IT Set in the heart of Liverpool's business district, Origin Rejuvenation Clinic & Spa on Castle Street is an oasis of relaxation for the city's office workers.
WHAT DOES IT DO The contemporary salon has three luxurious treatment rooms and its extensive treatment list includes an indulgent selection of beauty treatments, holistic therapies, day spa packages, Fake Bake tanning and facial rejuvenation.

AVOID SUNBURN TO KEEP YOUR SKIN LOOKING YOUNG AND HEALTHY
TREATMENT REVIEW WITH my summer holiday almost here and the familiar realisation that I'd once again left it too late to achieve Jennifer Aniston's envious thighs, it was with high hopes that I set off for a Caci Quantum body toning session. An advanced new treatment, the impressive Caci Quantum system features specific programmes for Photographs slimming, contouring and cellulite busting (as well as nonby Lee Ashun surgical face lifts) and just one 20 minute session is the equivalent of a sweat-inducing two and a half hours in the gym. Debbie, my therapist, begins the treatment by strategically placing a series of 12 toning pads along my thighs and expertly explains how the pads transmit micro-currents to contract and tone the muscles. As a first-timer, my treatment is started on the lowest level (similar to a warm pins and needles sensation) and throughout the treatment Debbie slowly increases the intensity until my thigh muscles are visibly working-out of their own accord. By the end of the session the tops of my legs are left feeling instantly more defined and at a refreshinglyaffordable £25 per session (or less for a course of 10 or 20 treatments) I'm already counting down the days until my second appointment...
2 AVOID SUNBEDS AT ALL COSTS
The highly powered UV rays they give out are seriously damaging to the skin and using a sunbed just once a month can increase your risk of melanoma skin cancer by more than 50 per cent.
3 GET REGULAR EXERCISE
Exercise increases circulation which in turn increases the amount of oxygen and nutrients which flow to the skin, giving a natural healthy glow.
4 LEARN TO LOVE YOUR SKIN
So many women see pale skin as unattractive and this is a real misconception. Think of Liv Tyler, Cate Blanchett and Nicole Kidman. They are all women who embrace their natural skin tone and are all very beautiful.
5 RECREATE THE ‘ENGLISH ROSE’ LOOK
I think pale skin is beautiful, and I even designed a whole collection around it called English Rose. To create the look yourself use a concealer or foundation which matches your skin tone to cover any under eye circles or blemishes you may have. Use a touch of soft pink or rose blush on the cheeks and a similar colour on the lips. Eyes are defined with a touch of mascara.

A new era in blonde colour, Utopia focuses on dynamic shapes, dramatic cutting techniques and blonder than blond girls. What to ask for in salon: ● Utopia Cut - Ask your stylist for a defined look and to recommend a cropped style that will complement your face shape.
The Intersexion trend creates chic, androgynous, sharp styles that are both avant garde and classic at the same time. What to ask for in salon: ● Intersexion Cut - Ask your stylist for a tailored bob that combines contrasting shapes and textures with colour blocks of black/browns, charcoals and thunder sky blues.
À la Lady Gaga, the Virtual Life trend is all about making long hair edgier through pure blocks of colour and combining bluntness and strength. What to ask for in salon: ● Virtual Life Cut – Ask your stylist to create strong panels of colour and a flexible cut that can worn in many different ways.

Making waves
Phill Gallagher says: “To achieve Sarah's glamorous De-Lush waves we started by creating extra body and movement with Voodou's fantastic Wella System Professionals' (SP) volumising treatment. Focusing on building long lasting volume, the treatment begins with a volumising shampoo and conditioner followed by applying an intensive salon-only volumising mousse. "Next, we used a spritz of Wella SP's volumising builder to add that extra bit of va va voom, before blast drying to lift the roots. Using a narrow, barrel brush we then worked our way to the top of the head, curling the hair under and pinning in place to secure. After leaving to set for around three minutes, the curls are simply brushed out to create loose, glamorous waves for true red carpet glamour.”
Standing feet shoulder width apart, hold the two bottles on the outside of your hips and slowly raise to shoulder height before stretching your arms out to each side. Slowly lower and repeat 10/20 times.

On yer' bike
Sarah Hooley discovers the power of the pedal
WHETHER you've been inspired by the stunning images of Olympic cyclist, Chris Hoy or just fancy a change to the hum-drum of pounding a treadmill, cycling could be just what you need to get in shape this summer. Often hailed as the ultimate workout, cycling can give you the body that you've always dreamt of - from toned calves to buns of steel. Jane Moore, from TravelWise, which works across Merseyside to promote sustainable travel, says: “Cycling is becoming more and more popular in the city and Liverpool is an exciting base for cyclists - whether for leisure or travel. Not only is it a healthy and 'green' way to get around, but it also gives the freedom to go where you want, when you want.” Able to reduce the risks of heart disease and strokes, as well as improve circulation and mental health – cycling is an all round superstar and quicker than you can say 'it's-worth-the-helmet-hair' we're willing to bet that you'll be hooked. If your riding's a little rusty, TravelWise can also arrange a cycling training course with the friendly fellows at Liverpool-based Cycling Solutions. So if you're tired of sticking to the beaten track, why not give cycling a go? It's as easy as riding a bike...

The interview
‘Liverpool is the best’ best Peter Grant discovers what’s y loves about the city David Morrisse
D
AVID Morrissey knows all about Liverpool being the best. “I don’t think I’d be doing what I do now if it wasn’t for my home city,” says the much-in-demand actor, writer and director. “I look back at what The Beatles achieved and how they said ‘if you want something, if you really, really want it, then you have to work hard for it and go for it.” The Kensington-born, RADAtrained star later grew up in Knotty Ash, home of another famous Liverpudlian. Turning 45 this year, he is now one of the most-respected actors in the business. He’s starred in gritty TV series, from State of Play to the recent raw and powerful Red Riding. He showed his versatility in the costume drama Sense and Sensibility and in Dickens adaptations, while in films he shone in fellow Scouse Frank Cottrell Boyce’s Hilary and Jackie. Then there was Captain Corelli’s Mandolin; and he was even brave enough to appear opposite Sharon Stone in Basic Instinct 2.

BEST OF LIVERPOOL
But he hasn’t forgotten his roots. David first made his name on the telly in One Summer back in 1982 when he landed one of the leading roles in Willy Russell’s tale of two young lads who do a runner. David played Billy Rizley. He recalls: “It was not an escape from drink or drugs - just two lads who wanted to get away from the deprivation; a different landscape. It was about a real desire to change. “It still - after all these years means a lot to me,” he added. David, who now lives in London with wife Esther and their three children, has never stood still creatively since that mouldbreaking summer. During the making of One Summer he questioned everything about the mechanics of filmmaking. It was what David Morrissey was and still is all about – perfecting his craft. “I always watched telly and wondered how did they do that?” he reveals. “I never lost that - I still haven’t.” David admits his motivation to become an actor came from the
film Kes by Ken Loach. “I could see the laughter and the tears. It moved me even as a young man,” says Mr Morrissey, who really has given it his all. David’s resume is packed with diversity, from BBC costume epics to earthy dramas, singing and dancing series like Blackpool and a guest spot in Dr Who. Working freelance, David can be wherever he wants, but he is often drawn back to the city. He laughs: “I am like a Scouser abroad – but I keep coming back. Liverpool is where I am from. It is familiar. I love the atmosphere. “Liverpool produces creative people wanting to do something. I know it’s a cliché, but walking around you have that thing about The Beatles coming from here. Then you think about Echo and the Bunnymen and The Las, and it goes on and on." David, his brother Paul and business partner John Maxwell set up Tubedale Films in the late 90s, producing a catalogue of feature films, TV dramas and short films, set mostly in the North West using home-grown talent.
LIVERPOOL PRODUCES CREATIVE PEOPLE WANTING TO DO SOMETHING
David has made three critically acclaimed shorts and wrote a film based on a Charles Bukowski short story called Bring Me Your Love starring Ian Hart and Sam West. He earned a BAFTA for best new director for his film Sweet Revenge starring Paul McGann and Sophie Okanodo. And his last film was screened in Liverpool earlier this year with the grand ‘official’ premiere to be announced. But is this actor with such on screen presence comfortable wearing hats such as director and producer? He says: “My brother and John are the real nuts and bolts of the producing team. I leave the bulk of that to them. But I do enjoy seeing it all come together.” Surely he gets tempted to not only direct a film but appear in it, too? He smiles: “I don’t think I ever will direct myself, but never say never.” (This, it appears, is one of his consistently used phrases.) “I’ve worked with actor/directors and I find it very weird. I feel I can only wear one hat at a time.”>>>
AUGUST 09
>>> When he comes home, David likes to put something back into the industry. He says: “When I go back there I go to the Bluecoat and to FACT – great places. In June I went to do a Q and A at the Actors Academy in Duke Street set up by Red Hot Media for children and teenagers.” And he is still a big supporter of the Unity Theatre, where his picture hangs on the wall alongside that of Bill Kenwright. “I love the Unity,” he says with a real sincerity in his famous voice. “When I was younger I was a member of the Everyman Youth Theatre but I also did a number of plays at the Unity and absolutely loved it. I think it’s a brilliantly run theatre and I am very happy to support it.” David is certainly burning the creative candle at both ends. He happily tells Best of Liverpool: “I’ve just finished three projects: one a film about the life of Winnie Mandela which I filmed in Soweto earlier this year, and Centurion, a film about the Ninth Legion and their exploits in Scotland starring Dominic West and Michael Fassbender.” The third is closer to home and The Beatles – those inspiring Moptops feature again in David Morrissey’s career, as he’s working on a Beatles biopic playing Julia Lennon’s lover Bobby Dykins. He says with much pride: “I’m in Nowhere Boy about the life of the young John Lennon.” And David, who won a BAFTA for his portrayal of Gordon Brown in C4’s The Deal, says he doesn’t rule out playing the much maligned politician again. “Never say never." (See, we told you he likes that phrase!)
The face of the City Michelle Rushton catches up with beauty queen Miss Liverpool
Photograph of Miss Liverpool courtesy of Zoe Photography shot in Knowsley Halll
IT’S a well-known fact Merseyside women take pride in their appearance, so to win Miss Liverpool you have to be pretty darned hot. With her blonde curls and figure to die for, Debbie O’Toole caught the judges’ eyes at the beauty pageant held at the Olympia ballroom. Freshly crowned in the Miss Liverpool tiara and sash, the next morning Debbie performed her first official duty at the Lord Mayor’s Parade. Since then, she has been swept up in a whirlwind of engagements, from representing Hawaiian Tropic suncream at the La Mans motor racing in Paris to posing as a bunny girl for a new National Lottery® scratchcard. And she was recently awarded The Best Smile at the Miss England competition. Taking time out from her hectic schedule, Debbie caught up with us at the Hard Day’s Night Hotel. Despite the baking heat, the 23-year-old from West Derby looked fresh-faced and summery in a floral maxi-dress, hair thrown in a pony-tail, lightly bronzed with seemingly not a scrap of make-up. “I like my skin to breathe during the day, but by night I like to glam up for a really different look,” she revealed. And what better chance to get dolled up than Miss Liverpool? Debbie admits she’s still on a high after winning the event in June. “It’s a dream come true to represent my city,” she gushed. “There’s so many pretty girls in Liverpool, I had to work really hard. On the night, I wore a dress by Lola Loves and won a portfolio by Zoe Photography, shot in Knowsley Hall.” Debbie’s modelling career took off when she won Miss Hawaiian Tropic International, held in Las Vegas, giving her the opportunity to travel the world representing the suncare brand. “Recently, I have been really busy preparing for the Miss England contest, held last month at the Hilton in London,” said Debbie. "I had to organise a fundraising event for three different charities – B-eat (Beat Eating Disorders), Variety Club and The National Autistic Society. I roped my friends into
dressing as bunny girls for a charity car wash, and we raised £640 in four hours,” she giggled. Debbie also had to make a DVD displaying one of her many talents. Although she has appeared as an extra in Hollyoaks, Debbie opted to show her sweet side – making cup cakes, which earned her a place in the final. Sadly she didn't win but Debbie enjoyed every moment – especially getting to wear a gown designed by AllyMac and £20,000 worth of jewellery loaned from Pryors Jewellers on London Road. And she was delighted at winning Best Smile. She said: "I was made up. A smile is really important as its the first thing you notice about the person.” She is now looking forward to a trip to Mexico to hand over the title of Miss Hawaiian Tropic, entering the Miss Model England contest and representing England in the Miss Swimsuit USA national finals in the Bahamas in November. Clearly enjoying her new-found glamour status, Debbie remains refreshingly down to earth, and although she gets to explore the globe, she admits there’s no place like home. She said: “Liverpool is the best for shopping and nightlife!”
ONES TO WATCH After catching Liverpool band Bicycle Thieves’ debut Glastonbury set, we’ll be watching with interest as the group’s notoriety grows over the summer. After a personal invite to play the festival from Glasto head honcho Emily Eavis herself, the band returned to the city in fine fettle with a string of dates confirmed for the summer. Expect to see a lot more of these boys and their dark, broody, so cool you’ll hate them assault on the charts. www.myspace.com/bicyclethievesuk We’ll also be making time to marvel at the ingenious imagination of animated designer Danielle Orsini. After making her home in the city during university, this BAFTA award winning little miss has already been head hunted by a major production company in Norway to work on a forthcoming animation series. Global domination aside, she’s also had time to create her own little planet of knitted dolls and curious badges, all available to buy from www.daniellaorsini.com. Sultry Liverpool beauty Eva Petersen will be brightening up our August as she treats us to a rendition of her new material. The former Little Flames front woman has a new set of songs to enthral and beguile us at Parr Street Studio 2 on August 6. If, like us, you can’t wait ‘till then, you can check out tracks ‘Get You Alone’ and ‘Little White Lies’ on www.myspace.com/evapetersenmusic

WOOLTON PICTURE HOUSE
THE
BEAUTIFUL SOUTH Sarah Hooley explores the southern suburbs. JOURNEY less than three miles south of the city centre and you'll find yourself in the cosmopolitan suburbs and picturesque, leafy parks of South Liverpool. An urban oasis, the bustling throes of south Liverpool provide the perfect place to escape the city crowds and whether you're a seasoned resident or weekend visitor, south Liverpool is quite rightly 'the' place to be seen. First stop on the agenda should be the vivacious Allerton Road. A real jewel in south Liverpool's bulging crown, the lively area is awash with glamorous boutiques, contemporary salons and high street stores, but the road's real selling point is its chic-cafe culture and exuberant night life. Trendy restaurants, cafes and coffee houses
sit shoulder-to-shoulder with stylish bars that spill out to the pavements and from young professionals and families to the odd celebrity, the area has a vibrant atmosphere that never fails to impress. Take a short walk around the corner and Rose Lane is another hot-spot for weekend jaunts, or head back towards the city and make a quick detour for the world famous Penny Lane before finding yourself amongst the colourful Smithdown Road. Head further south and the seemingly endless Aigburth Road is yet another favoured spot within the city's southern suburbs. Running almost parallel alongside the River Mersey, the effervescent area is home to a wonderful collection of laid-back eateries, exclusive salons and beautiful
shops and perfectly caters for the discerning south-sider. Of course, the bohemian realm of Lark Lane is deservedly one of Aigburth's most popular hangouts. Stretching from Aigburth Road to the fringes of Sefton park, the charming lane is as trendy as it is idiosyncratic and thanks to its village-like atmosphere, eclectic combination of businesses and even more eclectic mix of people (Lark Lane regulars – you know the type) it's has long been a favourite with Liverpool residents. Shift down a gear and the leafyconservation area of Woolton Village is quite easily one of the most charming areas in south Liverpool, lined with pretty, quaint streets and is also home to one of the city's oldest remaining independently owned cinemas. Park life is another essential requirement of any south-side visit and whether you fancy a making the most of the sunshine with an impromptu picnic or taking the kids to let loose, south Liverpool is as green as it gets. Greenbank Park, Otterspool Park and Promenade, Princes Park, Camphill and Woolton Woods are all well established family favourites, but the magnificent Calderstones Park and 200acre site of Sefton Park with its magnificent Palm House and boating lake are probably two of the best loved. With so much to do, it's not surprising that south Liverpool beckons people back time and time again. And, thanks to its stones-throw proximity to the city centre, there's no excuse not to journey south. How to get there: Call Traveline 0871 200 2233 or visit Merseytravel.gov.uk

WOVEN STRIPE GREEN CUSHION, from Debenhams, £20
THIS season’s home style is pretty intense with bold patterns, bright bursts of colour and elegant lighting all hitting the stores. We’re seeing electric pinks, stunning blues and slightly calmer tones of green sitting comfortably alongside more natural hues on the walls. A warning though, be careful not to combine too many bold statements, you want to be able to unwind with a glass of wine not feel like you’re in a circus arena. We caught up with Michelle Potter, interior design consultant from Elaine Cunningham Interiors in Aigburth Road to check up on the latest trends emerging in Liverpool homes. “Just changing wallpaper and fabrics can give a room a completely different look, add in some new accessories including cushions and lamps and you'll feel like it's a different house!” advises Michelle. So, what should we look for when deciding to redecorate? “Adding wallpaper is still a big hit, and the ‘feature’ wall is still going strong! The good news is that there’s now

background wallpaper to match your feature wall,” says Michelle. She has dealt with a variety of clients, but says many still look for neutral tones for walls and furniture. Although after showing them the difference an inexpensive, injection of colour can make, combined with comfort and luxurious design, clients love their ‘new’ room. Michelle said: “While the neutral shades are still going strong, accent colours like purple, olive and lime green, as well as bright summer colours including blues and pinks are very popular, plus bold patterns and stripes.” To spruce up your dining table sets Michelle suggests reupholstering your chairs in a funky fabric, and says glass furniture is as popular as ever, along with walnut tones that bring warmth to a room. Brighten things up a little with your lighting too. “Chandeliers are hugely popular and definitely a way of making a grand impact on your room. There are so many options available now with different lengths that everyone can incorporate into their house!” Michelle adds.
Grow your own
AUGUST 09
Michelle Rushton gets a taste of the good life
SELF sufficiency hasn’t been so sexy since Felicity Kendal set pulses aracing in the 70s sitcom, The Good Life. Thanks to the credit crunch and a surge in garden make-over shows, growing your own is making a comeback. And it’s not just Prince Charles and mother earth types digging in; young professionals are ditching the weekly shop at Waitrose and heading down to their allotments in droves with hoes in hand, decked in their designer wellies. Everybody’s at it - I even discovered my old flatmate, whose idea of creating a culinary masterpiece was opening a Fray Bentos pie, has cultivated her own herb garden in her new pad. But it makes sense when you think about it. Why spend a small fortune on strawberries and spinach when you can have your own organic, ready-to-eat, chemical-free supply at the bottom of your garden? Not only will it save you money, but you will know exactly where they have come from and what you have put on them to make them grow. And it goes without saying that growing your own is much more environmentally friendly, with the only TWO PIECE GARDENING GIFT footprints left being the muddy ones down your SET, £64.95 from Duchy Originals garden path! Plus it doesn’t matter if your outdoor space is at a premium - you can still get involved whether you only have room for a window box filled with basil which you can pick and put in your soups when you wish or a tomato plant in your back yard supplying you with fresh toms for your summer salads. As well as growing stuff to eat, people are now starting to grow their own drugs thanks to the BBC2 series where ethnobotanist James Wong showed us how to transform familiar plants into simple natural remedies to ease the symptoms of minor everyday ailments. Each fruit and vegetable has its own method of growing and timetable but generally most things need to be planted in the spring - so you need to prepare the soil, remove weeds and sow, not to mention trimming and pruning and keeping control of pests. Restaurant review
Taste of the big apple Katie McLoughlin takes a culinary voyage across the Atlantic to The James Monro THINK of an American restaurant and you’re probably conjuring up images of some grease-laden diner or fast food joint that specialises in food of the heart-attack causing variety. But tucked away on
Tithebarn Street lies a restaurant with a new take on American food. Opened last November, The James Monro is the latest venture from owners of popular Duke Street gastro-pub, The Monro. More Manhattan than Mid-West, the menu is said to have been inspired by New York’s ubertrendy restaurant scene. With such a tall reputation, we had high expectations when we took refuge in this stylish eatery on a blustery, rainy evening and we were not disappointed. Chic and cosy, The James Monro has a distinctly bistro-feel, with framed photographs of New York decorating the walls and candles in antique-style holders adorning the sleek, dark wooden tables. Entering the eatery somewhat soggy from the supposedly summer weather, we were immediately greeted by a friendly waitress who sat us at a comfortable table tucked away at the side of the bar.
Scanning the menus that an equally personable waiter swiftly brought over; after ordering drinks, we opted for the Early Doors menu, which offers two courses for £11.95 from 5-7pm, Monday to Friday. After a long day at work, we were both starving so were more than happy when our starters arrived, just 10 minutes later. I chose the soup of the day - rich, creamed sweetcorn soup served with a dollop of chopped chorizo and a succulent king prawn on top. The soup was delicious, as was the boyfriend’s toasted New York bagel topped with poached egg, applewood bacon and fresh, hollandaise sauce, which he heartily enjoyed. For our mains, the allure of a chunky, homemade burger proved too much for the boyfriend to resist, and he opted for the New Yorker Bronx Burger with melted Vermont cheddar and applewood bacon.
Our meals arrived swiftly and from his first bite, it was clear the boyfriend was impressed with his choice. Served in a generous portion, the pasture raised burger came with Chipolte ketchup; carrot and pistachio coleslaw; homemade dill pickle and handcut fries - which he quickly declared were the best chips he had ever had! For my main, I plumped for the pan-fried sea bass. Served on a bed of crushed potatoes, topped with buttery spinach, tangy chorizo and a drizzle of pesto. The fish was expertly cooked and the rich
flavours of the chorizo and pesto were the perfect accompaniments. For our final course we both went for all-American classics - I chose the pecan and bourbon pie whilst my companion opted for the coffee ice cream and mini donuts. All in all with three glasses of wine, a lager shandy and a bottle of mineral water, our three course culinary journey across the Atlantic came to just over £48. A few pizzas, some lasagne and cappuccinos all round to finish off the meal. Easy. But no, all Italians are not the same, certainly not in Liverpool. The success of a truly great Italian restaurant is the feeling that you’ve experienced something special. Maybe the food is genuinely sublime, perhaps the feel within is truly Neapolitan, or the waiters have an easy charm that beckons you to call in again and again. Whatever it is, these 10 restaurants have it and promise to whisk you away from these shores for an hour or two, so that you could almost be in Florence or Rome, Milan or Naples. Michelle Rushton gets her sealegs at Liverpool Cruise Terminal STUCK for inspiration in the midst of writing a feature, I glanced out of our office window which overlooks the Pier Head. There, moored alongside our impressive waterfront in all her magnificent glory, was a giant white American cruise liner, a truly breathtaking sight. Since it opened in 2007, the City of Liverpool Cruise Terminal has played host to a number of world class vessels, from the Grand Princess to the QE2. And it was recently rated as one of the best in Europe. Fred. Olsen offers a range of cruises departing from Liverpool, from the Canary Isles and Norway to Iberia and the Mediterranean.
And cruising is experiencing something of a revival at present. No longer perceived to be an indulgence of the upper classes or senior citizens, more and more young people and families are coming on board - attracted by the wide range of activities and first class facilities. So if you’re new to cruising - cast aside your rusty memories of The Love Boat and images of gentlemen twirling their ladies in the ballrooms - instead think contemporary bars and restaurants offering global cuisine. Wake up to a new destination almost every day, and explore new horizons, whether it's an exotic Caribbean island, or the hustle and bustle of a cosmopolitan city. During the day, you can have a work out in the gym, take part in a fitness class, enjoy a relaxing massage or beauty treatment, soak up the rays on the sun lounger on deck, enjoy a round of golf, or have a dip in the pool. Some are even equipped with ice-skating rinks and rock-climbing walls! When the ship comes into port, you can disembark and explore the area, going on organised excursions, taking in the local sights and landmarks from vineyards to historical buildings. At night, the cruise ships come alive with varied programmes of entertainment from live bands and West End shows to casinos, fashion shows and comedy nights. For children, there are plenty of supervised adventures and activities - catering for all ages from tots to teens, and there may even be babysitting services so you can let your
hair down safe in the knowledge that your little ones are being cared for. If you need to work, (really - do you have to?!) many ships are equipped with Wi-Fi hot spots, and cyber cafes so you can stay connected with the outside world. So if you’re planning a vacation, why not give cruising a whirl? Don’t forget to pack your dinner jacket!

THE very successful programme of cruises by Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines departing from Liverpool is set to continue for 2010. Although Black Prince, the ship that founded this programme, will be retired in autumn 2009, the company has taken the decision to deploy the larger Boudicca to take on the mantle of the regional departure programme in 2010. In total, Boudicca will cruise from five different UK ports next year: Southampton, Greenock, Rosyth, Newcastle and Liverpool, with Liverpool being the home port for 10 of them. Itineraries available from Liverpool vary in length from a two night mini cruise between Liverpool and Greenock, to a 23night Eastern Mediterranean cruise in springtime. Cruise destinations include the Canary Islands, Norway, Baltic, Iberia, Mediterranean and the beautiful Cape Verde Islands out in the Atlantic Ocean. There is also a Christmas and New Year cruise of 14 nights to the Canaries which departs on December 21, 2010, returning to Liverpool on January 4, 2011. Boudicca carries just 856 passengers in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere that is the hallmark of every Fred. Olsen cruise. The vessel’s interior is stylish, elegant and very modern, with large windows in the public rooms creating a light and airy ambience. The ship’s main formal restaurants boast a
wealth of original landscape and botanical paintings, whilst the Secret Garden Restaurant is available for informal dining. The many lounges and bars offer a choice of evening entertainment, and there is a well equipped gym and beauty salon as well. Decks are spacious, and there is always somewhere to either laze and soak up the sun, get immersed in a book, or just snooze! Many cruises on Boudicca offer Fred. Olsen’s exclusive add-on programmes too. Flagship Golf provides up to four rounds of golf ashore, practice sessions with the resident PGA Pro on board, and social activities for golfers and non-playing partners during the cruise. Flagship Golf must be booked before the cruise, and is priced at £375 per player. The ArtsClub is available on selected cruises, and is the name given to special interest themes covering a variety of subjects from computers for beginners to playing bridge and from Nordic legends to dance. It allows you to indulge in a favourite pastime, or try out a new hobby at your leisure. These activities are at no additional cost (except for wine tasting and painting materials) and no pre-booking is required, so passengers can dip in and out as they choose. Boudicca’s cruising programme from Liverpool starts on March 23, 2010 with six cruises, and then continues in early winter with another four, including the Christmas and New Year cruise.

AUGUST 09
Happy staycation Katie McLoughlin embarks on a great British spa-break
B
LAME it on the Brontës, but I’ve always regarded the Yorkshire moors rather fondly, so when I had the chance to go on a spa-cation in the Pennines, I jumped at it. With the nation having taken staycationing to its heart, spa-cations have emerged as the must-do travel trend for those who want the convenience of a UK short break with the escapism of a ‘proper’ holiday. Situated in the secluded, West Yorkshire village of Linthwaite, the Titanic Spa is the perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Housed within a converted textile mill, the spa’s rugged, industrial exterior is in stark contrast to the natural beauty of the surrounding countryside, and the sleek interior which features the spa on the ground floor and luxury, serviced apartments above. Luxury and eco don’t usually go hand in hand, but the Titanic, which is billed as the UK’s first eco-spa, works hard to ensure it has impeccable green credentials without sacrificing comfort.
The former mill building is carbon neutral; an energy efficient unit provides the spa’s heat and electric; solar panels are used to generate energy and all of the laundry – including the fluffy brown gowns that guests pad around in – is washed with cold water to save energy. The spa even has its own borehole, which provides pure Yorkshire water for the chlorine-free, salt-regulated swimming pool. When it comes to treatments, there’s an extensive range to choose from including Elemis, Decleor and Carita treatments, holistic therapies plus signature treatments like hamman massage and mud chamber therapy. Keen to get that holiday glow even though I’d only gone to Huddersfield, after staying overnight in one of the modern apartments, I opted for a Jessica manicure and an Elemis Exotic Frangipani Body Wrap which is designed to nourish skin and boost luminosity. The treatment started with therapist, Stacey, using a dry body brush to exfoliate my entire body. Generous handfuls of warm oil, made by soaking Tahitian coconut and frangipani flowers together,

IT'S official - canal hopping is cool again. The completion of a £22m restoration project has extended the Leeds-Liverpool canal, opening up the new Liverpool canal link to a new generation of sailors. Authorised in 1770, the original Leeds-Liverpool canal was built in sections until it was finally completed in 1816. By extending the canal through the disused central docks, across the Pier Head in front of the Three Graces and into the south docks, the restoration project has created a further 1.4 miles of navigable waterway. The new Liverpool canal link, which provides

access to the water’s edge at the Pier Head, is expected to bring 200,000 extra visitors with a spending power of some £1.9m to the city each year. No longer an activity of the more senior sailor, young people are jumping on board to sample a slower, relaxed pace of life whilst exploring the great British countryside. Canal boat trips allow you to take in stunning scenery and the chance to stop at lots of country pubs for some fine food and drink. was then massaged from the tips of my toes to the top of my shoulders to nourish and hydrate the skin. Stacey explained that frangipani oil is renowned for its moisturising properties, and, whilst my body was wrapped in a plastic sheet and heated blanket to allow the oil to soak in, my neck and shoulders were vigorously massaged for several minutes. This is the ideal treatment for anyone who wants to combine a little bit of everything into one therapy, because it includes both a body wrap and massage, scalp massage and a mini facial using the exotic oil. Following nearly 50 minutes in this warm and aromatic cocoon, after showering, a rich frangipani body lotion was applied for the final stage of the treatment. The results were impressive – my previously lack lustre complexion was now smooth, soft and radiant. After being pampered to perfection, lounging in the Relaxation Room and enjoying lunch in the spa’s Mediterranean bistro, next on my spa-cation itinerary was the Titanic Heat Experience. Designed to take you on a sensory journey, this includes a crystal steam bath; a ‘saunarium’ which combines a Scandinavian sauna with steam infusion; a traditional Finnish sauna cabin; footbaths and aromatherapy room. There’s also an ice room, plunge pool and bucket shower to cool you down. The experience - whilst a little uncomfortable at first going from hot to cold repeatedly - induces deep relaxation and after a few hours my skin was glowing and fresh. All in all, whilst my spa-cation was only for one night, I left feeling completely rested and refreshed. So if you’re looking to escape your worries without sacrificing too much time out of a busy schedule, then a spa-cation is the holiday for you. The Titanic Spa has a range of spa-break packages to choose from, visit www.titanicspa.com or call 0845 410 3333 for details.
