WELCOME to our July issue of Best of Liverpool.

There’s a distinct carnival atmosphere in the city with Brouhaha and Brazilica happening this month. Read our colourful guide to what’s on on pages 22-24.

It certainly puts you in the holiday mood and if you’re lucky enough to be jetting off to sunnier climes, Sarah has thoughtfully put together a capsule wardrobe for the ladies on pages 6-7, while Katie lays out outfits for the boys to strut their stuff on the beach in on pages 8-9. Make a splash in some sizzling swimwear on page 10 and don’t forget the little ones who will look adorable in our pick of summer togs on page 11.

For those who are more pale and interesting than bronzed and beautiful (and I count myself in that category!), Katie has picked out some essential summer products to bring out your inner glow.

Plus if, like me, the summer humidity makes your mane an unmanageable frizzy mess, read Sarah’s tips on how to tame your tresses on page 15.

At this time of year, my hayfever starts to kick in, bringing constant sneezing and itchy eyes – not a good look. So we turned to the experts for advice on page 14.

We’re getting very broody at the prospect of a new arrival at the palace expected this month and have been speculating on the sex of the Royal bambino. What will they call the Royal junior? And how will they decorate the Royal nursery? Emma has some ideas for Wills and Kate on pages 16-17.

Pretty soon the new baby will grow up fast and be demanding a birthday party to

rival all his/her friends. See Emma’s guide to throwing the perfect kids’ birthday party on page 19 and, later on, they will be finding ways to entertain their offspring during the school holidays. We have the perfect antidote to summer boredom on page 18.

Making some noise in the city is drumming group Batala Liverpool which plays a lively mix of Brazilian style samba-reggae music.

BOOK CLUB BIRYANI

SEFTON Park was the scene for a very special event last month, as thousands flocked to the south Liverpool park for Africa Oyé.

Festival-goers weren’t put off by the ominous grey clouds that lingered throughout the two-day event and Africa Oyé – which is the UK’s largest free festival of African music and culture – beat the conditions to put on a stellar 21st birthday celebration.

The festival, whch took place on June 22-23, was a great success with festival-goers enjoying a feast of African food, culture and music.

Performers from six different countries played live at the event, including ZongZing All Stars from DR Congo, Atongo Zimba from Ghana, Son Yambu from Cuba, Black Prophet from Ghana and leading Zimbabwe band, Mokoomba to name just a few.

Much more than just live music, the festival featured an ‘Oyé Village’ with arts and crafts stalls, a beer tent, stalls selling food and drink from around the world, as well as children’s entertainment.

Festival director, Paul Duhaney says: “It was a special year for us and considering the extraordinary circumstances of 2012, and the threat of rain again, we were delighted just to get started initially!

“But the crowds still came in their thousands and, with one of our best-ever line-ups, the festival was a wonderful success. Here’s to an even better 2014!”

PRESS CLUB HAS A BALL LIVERPOOL Press Club (LPC) invited the city’s media professionals to come out to play when it hosted a summer ball in June.

The first event of its kind for almost three decades, the ball was held at the Liverpool Marina Bar & Grill where renowned chef, Adam Franklin, provided a superb buffet supper.

Radio City presenter Jay Hynd took home the LPC Media Personality of the Year Award and a raffle was held to raise money for the Alder Hey Appeal, followed by dancing to a live band. It has to be said, a great time was had by all!

RUBY JOY FOR CITY HOTEL THE Atlantic Tower by Thistle hotel, located in the heart of Liverpool, celebrated its 40th year in the city last month.

More than 100 people attended a special party in the hotel’s newly refurbished Vista Bar and Restaurant on June 20, including Lord Mayor Gary Miller and the first general manager who opened the hotel back in 1973, Michael Hibbert.

THE Capstan’s Grand Bazaar is a new urban market event for Liverpool which celebrates local independent businesses and artisans and their home-grown produce and products.

The inaugural Capstan’s Grand Bazaar event will take place in HAUS, on Greenland Street, on Sunday, July 14 from 11am until 5pm.

The event is free to enter and there’ll be an eclectic array of stalls to explore. The market aims to showcase the best that the region has to offer, so expect locally made arts and crafts, handmade candles, jewellery and furnishings, and local produce including baked goods, fruit, veg, cheeses and meats.

As well as local produce and locally made goods, there’ll be vintage clothes and second-hand vinyl, books and furniture.

NAILING the latest trends at Nail Express at 25 Lord Street, opposite Debenhams in Liverpool ONE. The nail bar has built up a loyal following since opening a few months ago, with customers loving the friendly chat, fast service and on-trend nail design ideas, with marble effect nails in neon shades a big trend for Scouse girls this summer. The salon even counts Olympic gymnast Beth Tweddle among its clients, who popped into the city centre nail bar recently. Beth says: “I’ve never had nail extensions with training, so I thought I’d have a little pampering before my holiday now that celebrity on ice tour has finished.”

A marble effect polish on natural nails is priced at £15, pedicures are priced at £25 and a full set of acrylic nails pointed and finished with a marble-effect polish is £35.

JULY 13 A CITY fashionista raised £800 for a local cancer charity last month, with a fashion show held in memory of her mum, who lost her battle with ovarian cancer in 2012.

The fashion show, which took place in Circo on June 20, was organised by Leanne Miller, who wanted to raise funds for North West Cancer Research (NWCR) after losing her mum to cancer last year.

Leanne says: “The charity is very close to my heart and I’m really pleased that I was able to host this event to raise funds for them.”

The event saw models strut their stuff in clothes from Stacey Stylex, The Dressing Room Boutique, Gypsophila Couture, Merrie Boutique, Little Dolly, Booty Junk and Mabel Couture.

Anne Jackson, chief executive of NWCR says: “I can’t thank Leanne enough for putting the time and effort in to organise this fashion show. Money raised in the area stays in the region as it’s used to fund world-class cancer research at University of Liverpool, as well as at universities in Bangor and Lancaster.”

CLAIRE Sweeney, Kerry Katona and celebrity stylist Lorraine McCulloch were among the guests at Radio City’s inaugural Charity Ladies’ Lunch event on Friday, June 14.

The event, which took place in the rather swish surroundings of the Hilton

Hotel in Liverpool ONE, raised over £8,000 for Radio City’s charity ‘Cash for Kids’ and The Variety Children’s Charity.

Guests at the event were treated to a Champagne reception and a sumptuous three course lunch.

An entertaining afternoon followed, with guests enjoying a fashion show featuring clothing from Matalan and Marks & Spencer and sparkling jewellery from Wong’s, a Q&A with Claire Sweeney and a live performance from Kerry Katona.

PRIDE OF THE CITY

CITY THEATRE REACHES MILESTONE THE redevelopment of Liverpool’s Everyman Theatre reached a milestone last month as Mayor of Liverpool Joe Anderson joined theatre chiefs, funders, builders Gilbert Ash and architects Haworth Tompkins to celebrate the topping out of the new building.

With the redevelopment of the historic Hope Street theatre remaining on schedule and on budget, the topping out ceremony, which took place on June 17, marks an important milestone for the theatre, which is expected to reopen in 2014.

Executive director Deborah Aydon says:

“Liverpool is now a confident city, buoyed up by the invention and ambition of its cultural life, and its artists and audiences deserve 21st-century resources.

“The new building will be a crucible for Liverpool artists and offer a vibrant experience for residents and visitors.

Gilbert Ash and Haworth Tompkins have absolutely delivered what they promised and we are delighted with what is now a tangible transformation of our much-loved theatre. It is safe in their hands and we can’t wait to see it become even more amazing over the coming months.”

NEXT month will see Liverpool Pride fly into the city with a star-studded line-up, a super-hero theme and a weekend of cultural events.

The line-up for Liverpool Pride 2013, which will take place on August 3, was announced at a glitzy launch event held in Palm Sugar, Liverpool ONE last month.

Guests at the launch were treated to performances from Killa Sista and MiC Lowry who gave a taste of the talent that will be on stage come August 3.

The 2013 superhero themed festival line up also includes a bat-cave full of home-grown and UK talent including singing star Amelia Lily; rock/ pop-band My Forever; House of Suarez, Dance Dynamix, Thomas Teago, Adam Lyons; Nikki Bell; Killa Sista, dance act Baby D and Doremi Fly. There will also be a performance from the cast of the 20th Anniversary Concert of RENT, which will stomp into the Liverpool ECHO Arena in November.

Chair of Liverpool Pride Zoran Blackie says: “Liverpool Pride 2013 is going to be the biggest festival to date and the organisation is proud to continue its work. All of this can’t be done without the support of the Merseyside community, who every year come together to help make Pride happen and keep it free, which is truly special.”

CHARITY AND CAIPIRINHAS

GUESTS enjoyed an evening of fabulous food, music and magic in aid of the Marina Dalglish Appeal recently.

The charity night was held in June at Viva Brazil on Castle Street, and was a huge success with diners enjoying a rodizio, live music, samba dancing and magic tricks.

Luxury raffle prizes were auctioned at the event which was attended by former Liverpool Football Club player Gary

Gillespie and his wife Dianne.

The event has raised a total of £1,875.00 for the charity so far.

The Marina Dalglish Appeal was set up in 2005 to improve cancer care on Merseyside through various appeals and is currently trying to raise £2m towards an iMRI scanner at the Walton Centre Liverpool. For more information visit www.marinadalglishappeal.org

Sarah Hooley discovers how to pack the perfect capsule wardrobe for any summer holiday...

IT’S hard enough packing for a weekend in Barmouth, let alone a fortnight in the Balearics.

From hot pants and crop tops for the beach to dresses and heels for hitting the clubs, just how is any self-respecting woman expected to fit everything she needs into one teeny-tiny 20kg suitcase?

The secret is to create a capsule wardrobe.

If you’re new to the concept, start by buying a few basics – like a pair of denim shorts, some plain vest tops and a couple of summer dresses.

Add to this a playsuit, full-length skirt,

maxi dress, and a few statement tops and dresses, not forgetting a pair of sandals, wedges, a waist belt and heaps of jewellery. Think bangles, necklaces, earrings and rings to accessorise.

The idea is to create a small collection of carefully selected clothes that you can mix and match to result in a variety of different outfits. It may require a bit of thought, but it’s an excellent shopping strategy if you need to slim down your suitcase.

Plus, with all that extra cash you’ll save on excess luggage think about the goodies you’ll be able to treat yourself to in Duty Free on the way home....

SMOOTHER SKIN IS A SWEET TREAT Pain-less waxing? Sounds too good to be true, but as Katie McLoughlin finds, sometimes truth is stranger than fiction

CHOCOLATE certainly appeals to female sensibilities, but a chocolate wax? I’m not so sure. Associating something so nice with something so painful is either the greatest food aversion treatment in the world, or something of a gimmick.

So, sceptical about the merits of such a beauty treatment, I headed to STRIP, a specialist waxing boutique on the top floor of Harvey Nichols Beauty Bazaar.

Founded in 2005 by two sisters who set out to make waxing a more pleasurable experience, STRIP has eight waxing boutiques around the country, with Liverpool being the newest, having opened in November last year.

Everything about it has therefore been designed to make the experience a little more comfortable than going to your runof-the-mill salon for a pre-holiday wax.

It uses hot Lycon wax, which is believed to help prevent ingrown hairs, redness and the sting usually associated with waxing. It’s also supposed to be a lot less painful than other methods of waxing.

“It’s about 70% less painful than strip waxing as we put an oil onto the skin first, which acts as a barrier between the wax and the skin. And we use hot wax, which shrink-wraps around the hair as it cools and dries, so it only pulls on the hair, not the skin, when it’s removed – so it’s a lot less painful than strip waxing,” explains my therapist, Alethea who worked briefly in STRIP’s Chelsea boutique before the Liverpool boutique opened.

The wax is available in six different scents, including So Berry, Lavender, Olive, Gold, Chocolate and Hazelnut, and even one just for men, aptly dubbed – Manifico.

“People like the idea of a chocolate wax – it even looks like chocolate and smells a bit like Nutella, because it’s chocolate and hazelnut,” says Alethea.

Along with the six varieties of wax, each with its own distinct properties, STRIP has themed treatment rooms which have been designed to complement the type of wax being used.

As I was having a chocolate wax, I was in the chocolate themed room, which is decorated in rich shades of cocoa and gold, with a chocolate brown leather treatment bed taking centre stage in front of a chocolate bar wallpapered feature wall.

It all adds up to a very plush setting to have a wax. There are even TVs, so you can sit back and enjoy an episode of Friends during the treatment, my therapist tells me; but I can’t help but think of the episode when Monica buys a supposedly ‘pain-free’ waxing kit.

Then she and Phoebe have to rip the wax strips off each other’s legs because it hurts so much.

Perhaps that was the wrong episode to have conjured up as I prepare for a preholiday wax. But I needn’t have worried, because unlike Monica and Phoebe’s ‘pain-free’ wax, the Lycon wax STRIP uses was, as billed, a lot less painful than other waxing experiences.

Now, I’m not saying it didn’t hurt – we are talking about ripping hair out of the root here after all – it was a little

uncomfortable, but it was definitely less painful than other waxes I’ve had.

Admittedly, I didn’t think the wax had an especially chocolaty smell, but in terms of pain levels – and let’s be honest – that’s what matters here, it did exactly what it said on the tin.

It was also a much nicer experience, with none of the embarrassment that’s usually associated with waxing, as this is what STRIP specialises in. Indeed, the company does around 300 Brazilians/ Hollywoods a day in its London waxing boutiques – so it’s fair to say they experts in waxing.

Hayfever sufferer Michelle Rushton gets some expert advice from Dr John Blakey on managing her condition, which is not to be sneezed at WITH the summer finally here, many of us will be struggling with a blocked or runny nose, sneezing, and watering eyes.

Dr John Blakey, consultant in respiratory medicine at Aintree University Hospital, shares some advice about managing hayfever. He says: “Think about when you get symptoms – it might not be hayfever.

“Hayfever and related problems affect hundreds of millions of people of all ages across the world. Hayfever is seasonal because it is caused by pollen. However, many people have symptoms all year, or just when they encounter certain triggers, such as flour or cats.”

Try to avoid triggers

Avoiding whatever sets off your symptoms seems logical but can be very difficult. Simple measures such as keeping the windows in your car closed can be helpful.

It is often more helpful to focus on avoiding general irritants such as cigarette smoke and cold air; these will set off hayfever during the pollen season as the nose and eyes are already inflamed.

Go out in the morning Try to spend most time outdoors in the morning as pollen counts are higher in the afternoon and evening.

Save your money Potentially expensive items like home air filters or special mattress covers aren’t particularly helpful.

‘Allergy’ vacuum cleaners haven’t been shown to be any more effective than normal ones.

Hayfever is treatable The great majority of people with hayfever will gain control of their symptoms with simple treatments.

These treatments also reduce the risk of long term permanent damage inside of the nose and sinuses if taken regularly.

Newer treatments such as immunotherapy are available for people with difficult to control symptoms.

Don’t use decongestants Decongestant sprays might make you feel better for a little while but the benefit you get will be less each time you use them. When you stop using the decongestant, the problem will return but worse than before.

Spray don’t sniff!

To reduce the side effects of treatment, many drugs are given directly into the nose using a spray.

The commonest cause of a treatment not working is that the user has been sniffing when spraying the medicine; this draws the medicine into the back of the throat. The result is that the nose is no better but you have a sore throat.

Hayfever often causes a cough Runny noses don’t just run forwards, mucus will drip down the back of your throat. This irritates the voice box and causes coughing. Hayfever and related conditions are responsible for at least a third of cases of longstanding daily cough.

Treating hayfever is very important in asthma People with hayfever are more likely to have asthma than the general population. Hayfever also makes it more likely that someone will pick up a viral infection.

Having a viral infection and hayfever means you are almost 20 times more likely to be admitted to hospital for asthma than someone who has asthma but no hayfever.

Commonly used treatments for hayfever include: Nasal washes: Special nasal wash kits (often with saltwater) can be helpful to some people and are worth trying if you have mild symptoms and don’t want to take medicines Corticosteroids, eg. fluticasone spray: These are the main effective treatments for hayfever.

They do take a while to work so don’t give up if you don’t feel better after a week. Must be taken regularly.

Antihistamines, eg. cetirizine tablet: Good for itch and sneezing. Cheaper over the counter than on prescription. Best taken regularly.

Anticholinergics, eg. Ipratropium spray: Can help if a runny nose persists despite other treatments.

Antileukotrienes, eg. Montelukast tablet: Can be very helpful for nasal and eye symptoms, but does not work for everyone.

Must be taken regularly Cromones, e.g. sodium chromoglycate spray: Safe but not very effective and must be taken several times per day.

SOMETIMES rebellious and often stubborn – curls are many things, but boring certainly isn’t one of them.

And inspired by Natural Hair Week UK (July 15-20) we’re celebrating those of us lucky enough to be blessed with naturally wavy, curly or kinky hair.

Soft waves, in particular, are tipped to be a huge trend this summer.

So we caught up with Amelle Thompson from Herbert of Liverpool on Hanover Street for her top tips on how to get the best out of your tousled tresses.

A senior stylist, Amelle’s worked at the prestigious city centre salon for over five years, and has curly hair herself so is an expert in taming troublesome locks.

“I’ve got naturally curly hair,” she says. “So I know how tricky it can be to style, but with the right products you can make it look amazing.

“We’ve seen curly hair become more and more popular over the last few years, and the emphasis is on creating bouncy, naturally flowing curls at the moment.

She adds: “There’s definitely been a rise in the number of clients who are choosing to work with, rather than fight, their natural hair type.

“Quite often our clients bring in pictures of what they want their hair to look like, with the most popular celebrities that have curly hair being the likes of Cheryl Cole and Michelle Keegan.”

So how can you create a natural, frizzfree, wavy look at home?

“You should always prep your hair before trying out a new style,” explains Amelle.

“And working with clean hair is the best condition before you begin to tousle it. I use L’Oréal Professionnel

Serie Expert Curl Contour Shampoo and L’Oréal Professionnel Serie Expert Curl Contour Masque to shampoo and condition the hair.

“Once you’ve washed your hair,” she continues. “Give it a good towel dry and apply some oil – like L’Oréal Professionnel Mythic Oil – to prevent your hair drying out, and to keep it in the best condition before you apply heat.

“The next step is to give your hair a blow dry with the hair-dryer on medium heat.

“Separate your hair into segments, and run a round brush under each one, whilst applying heat to the top.

Repeat this until dry.

“Then, once all the hair is completely dry, twirl the segments around with your fingers and spray to hold.

“Voila! Gorgeous waves, ready for the summer!”

LHK Productions and The Epstein Theatre launched a fantastic opportunity for young people to beat school holiday boredom, have fun and learn new skills – with a Musical Madness Summer School!

This brand new venture from LHK heralds a welcome return of summer school to the theatre on Hanover Street, as when the venue was known as The Neptune Theatre it was the home of the popular Elliott Clarke theatre school’s summer holiday activities.

Now, the new Musical Madness Summer School promises to be the perfect summer activity for superstars in the making.

With two separate weeklong sessions (from Monday, July 29 – Saturday, August 3 and Monday, August 5 – Saturday, August 10), young people will receive training from TV and theatre industry professionals, many of whom started their careers within the venue’s four walls and enjoy a real life theatre experience.

Performers will cover some of the most popular musical numbers of all time from classics such as Grease, Hairspray,

Fame and Bugsy Malone while learning the skills and techniques needed to succeed in the entertainment industry. Each week will culminate in a live showcase performance on the renowned Epstein stage, which will be open to friends, family and the public.

The school will be split into two age groups age five – 12 and 13 plus, with technical placements also available for those who want to learn more about behind the scenes workings of a performing arts venue. This is a fantastic opportunity for any budding young stars to get an early taste of the theatre, and with no audition necessary and all levels of experience welcome places are expected to be snapped up fast and will be on a first come first served basis!

THE BEAT GOES ON

Famed for their lively and colourful performances, Batala Liverpool will be bringing a burst of music to the city at Brouhaha International Festival and Brazilica this month.

Ahead of their upcoming gigs, Sarah Hooley caught up with Ritchie Tunstall and Juliana Pinheiro Landim to find out more…

FROM supporting the likes of Take That and performing for Martin Luther King Jnr, to raising thousands of pounds for charity – it's fair to say that Batala Liverpool has come a long way since it was founded eight years ago.

The band – which is made up of more than 70 non-professional drummers – is one of 20 Batala bands across the world and plays a lively mix of Brazilian style samba-reggae music.

Co-founder and musical director of the Liverpool wing, Ritchie Tunstall, explains: “Batala is an international music group which plays music inspired by the music's homeland of Bahia in north-eastern Brazil.

“The first Batala group was founded in Paris by a percussionist called Giba Goncalves in 1997, before crossing the Channel in 2001 when a UK Batala band was created in Portsmouth.

“The ethos of the band, and the music that we play, is that everyone is equal, regardless of ethnicity, age or background.

“In total, there are more than 20 Batala bands – and 800 drummers – in the UK, Europe, Brazil, the Caribbean, USA and Africa.”

The 34-year-old continues: “Personally, what I love is the music and the family ethos of Batala. The way people all look out for each other, help each other in times of need and hang out together.

“It's like a real family. Members in the bands come from all walks of life, and I love the way this brings different people together, watching these relationships grow and strengthen the band and individuals. Members tell me that they feel the same – they love learning new skills and becoming part of a local and international family.

“I think that's why the group's grown so much over the years,” Ritchie adds.

“When we had our first meeting in 2005 we started off with 10 members, and we're now one of the biggest Batala groups in the world.

“Each week the band holds two practice sessions, and we're asked to perform at an average of 20-30 gigs per year. We have a new intake of members every year, and anyone is invited to join.”

Ritchie, originally from Scotland, moved to Liverpool in 2001 and is a drumming teacher as well as the musical director for Batala Liverpool.

Having played drums since the tender age of eight, the talented percussionist has notched up a raft of accolades, and in the past has recorded an album as part of dance music group Mettle Music.

He's also led his bandmates in Batala Liverpool to perform at countless highprofile venues and events like Wembley, and the Royal Variety Performance.

Yet it's the band's contribution to the community which Ritchie believes is perhaps their greatest achievement.

He says modestly: “It's hard to gauge what our biggest achievement is.

We've played Wembley Stadium for the England v Wales rugby match, and for the Manchester United v Chelsea football match, as well as supporting the Sugarbabes at the Royal Variety Performance and Take That – one of the biggest boybands in history.

“We were also privileged to lead the Remembrance Slavery Day parade which was headed by Martin Luther King Jnr, as well as perform for BBC Children in Need and at the MOBO afterparty.

“But I am equally proud of our community side. For instance, we raised £5k in one afternoon for the Haiti Earthquake Fund, and we work with disadvantaged young people in the community, teaching them new skills and helping to boost their confidence.

“To me, the important thing isn't gigs, it's who we, and what the band represents. It doesn't matter who you are, or what you look like.”

Big bang – Batala is always a lively, noisy and colourful performance

He adds: “Being in the band gives our members the opportunity to travel and perform with our sister bands too.

“Each year we take part in an annual carnival at Salvador da Bahia in Brazil which is where all of our costumes and drums are made under a fair trade agreement.

“During the carnival members visit the suppliers, and they also take part in social and educational activities with local children to experience the culture that gave birth to the music we love.”

It was also through an outing to the annual carnival in Brazil that Ritchie met his wife, Juliana Pinheiro Landim.

A talented percussionist herself, Brazilian-born Juliana, explains: “I'm originally from Brazil but was living in Washington DC where I joined the first American Batala group, which was an all female ensemble.

“With them I went to the carnival in Bahia when I met Ritchie, who was there with the Liverpool band. It sounds very corny, but we fell in love and the rest is history!”

Liverpool, and is now an integral part of Batala Liverpool. So how does Batala here differ to its home-nation of Brazil?

“Batala brings a sense of self-confidence to people through being able to play an instrument, and performing for crowds of people,” says Juliana passionately.

“I think members here [in the UK], are often more dedicated than those in Brazil, because they don't take it for granted.

"In Brazil you're born into it, drumming and dancing comes easy so our crew tries very hard to emulate that Brazilian energy – and they definitely succeed!

“I'd say the difference lies more with the crowd, who are sometimes extremely reserved. At times you can't tell if they're enjoying our show, but as soon as we stop they explode into applause and cheer!”

VIVA BRAZIL Liverpool gets a Latin flavour this month as Brazilica shakes its tail feather through the city for a whopping eight days. Katie McLoughlin takes a look at the highlights...

BRAZILIAN FILM SCREENINGS Bombed Out Church July 16-17 HERE’S hoping it doesn’t rain on July 16 and July 17, because film fans are in for a treat – weather permitting – with two Brazilian films being screened in St Luke’s (the Bombed Out Church).

A special night-time screening of Academy Award winning 1950s film, Orfeus Negro, will take place in the Berry Street venue on July 16. Directed

by Marcel Camus the film, which will be shown from 9.30pm-11.15pm, is set in Rio de Janeiro during the carnival and follows protagonist Orfeus as he meets Eurydice and the pair fall in love.

The path to true love is never smooth though – especially when Orfeus’ fiance discovers what’s going on.

Following the screening of Orfeus Negro on July 16, O Ano em Que Meus Pais Saíram de Férias (The Year My Parents Went on Vacation) will be shown from 9.30pm-11.15pm on July 17.

Directed by Cao Hamburger, this 2006 film tells the tale of a young boy left alone in a Jewish neighbourhood in São Paulo in 1970 – while the country, which is still under strict rule from a military government – prepares to host the World Cup.

BRAZILIANS. They are famed for many things – samba, football, Caipirinhas and most notably, their ability to party.

Anyone who has ever been to Rio De Janeiro’s famous carnival can testify to the South American nation’s love of a good party.

So, brace yourself Liverpool – because that Brazilian spirit of fun, carnival and colourful costumes is coming to the city as Brazilica – Liverpool’s International Samba Carnival takes place from July 12-20.

Believed to be the UK’s biggest samba carnival and celebration of Brazilian culture, Brazilica has a jampacked programme of events taking place throughout the city centre this month.

From Brazilian film screenings to samba workshops, fantastic food and, of course, the vibrant carnival parade, there is something for everyone at this city festival.

Here is Best of Liverpool’s pick of the festival programme:

FREVO DROP EXHIBITION Metquarter, July 12-20

BRAZILICA ZUMBATHON Chavasse Park, July 14

FREVO music and dancing are intrinsically linked to Brazilian carnivals, with colourful Frevo umbrellas traditionally carried by the dancers and incorporated into their dancing.

Curated by London-based arts collective Braziliality, this stunning exhibition is an installation of 30 original frevo umbrellas, hand-decorated and beautifully lit.

The exhibition comes to Liverpool from London’s V&A Museum, where it was recently on display, and will be open throughout Brazilica from July 12-20. Free to enter, it’s open to view from 9.30am until 6pm in the Metquarter on Whitechapel.

DRESS in carnival costume, don a feathered headdress and get ready to shake your hips, as Brazilica’s charity Zumbathon takes place in Chavasse Park on July 14.

The event, which raises funds for Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation and the Liverpool Carnival Company, will see a mass zumba class take place for three hours led by Zin Karen Salsaroja, with Simone Reeves, lead dancer of the Liverpool Samba School, leading the samba section.

Expect music and dance styles influenced by South America with samba and salsa vibes throughout. The Zumbathon will be in Chavasse Park from noon until 3pm on July 14. Registration is priced at £8 advance from Skiddle.com, or £10 on the day.

Frevo Drop exhibition

FANCY learning how to samba from a pro? Get yourself to The old Edge Hill Library, on Lodge Lane, on July 15 then, as Liverpool Samba School and Viva Brasil dancers are running a free samba dance class from 7.30pm until 8.30pm.

Following the dance class, a samba drumming class will take place in the same venue, from 8.30pm10pm. The class, which is aimed at beginners and costs £5, will be run by the Liverpool Samba School Bateria who are a regular fixture at the city’s Brazilica festival and have even performed in Rio’s famous carnival.

CARNIVAL DAY Williamson Square, July 20

CARNIVAL PARADE City centre, July 20

FOR a real carnival bloc party vibe in the heart of Liverpool, head to Williamson Square on Saturday, July 20 for Carnival Day. As the setting for Brazilica’s Carnival Day, Williamson Square will be transformed into a hive of activity with live music and samba dancing, food stalls where you can tuck into Brazilian fayre and even an outdoor ‘cocktail shack’ where festival-goers can quaff Brazil’s national drink – the Caipirinha.

There will be live music throughout the day and night too, with a host of Brazilian bands and artists set to play a music stage, which will be hosted by DJs from Juice FM. Headlining the music stage will be Sargento Pimenta, a Riobased band who are flying into Liverpool especially for the occasion. The band, who command audiences of up to 100,000 people in Brazil, perform Beatles classics in a fun, samba-style and are set to have Brazilica crowds singing and dancing along in no time!

Also on the line-up for the Carnival Day are UK-based Brazilian funk and samba band, The Fontanas; as well as samba and jazz fusion quartet Tribo Da Pesada, who make a welcome return to the festival’s main stage after wowing Brazilica crowds in 2012.

Plus, Liverpool Samba School, Viva Brasil Dance Shows and DJs Gary Garamendi, Silvao & Fabio will be on-hand to ensure Liverpool keeps dancing to the samba beat all day long.

ONE of the main components of Brazilica is undoubtedly the 500-strong parade which will fill the city’s streets with colour, sparkle and music on the evening of Saturday, July 20.

A scorching spectacle of samba, the parade, which begins at 8pm, will feature a host of samba schools from around the UK and Brazil. Among those set to perform in the parade are Sargento Pimenta from Rio; London-based Paraiso School of Samba; Liverpool Samba School; Nottingham School of Samba and Liverpool Batala, to name just a few.

Featuring a dazzling array of samba dancers and music, glittering costumes and colourful floats, the parade will begin at 8pm and make its way from Abercromby Square down Hope Street, Hardman Street, Bold Street and Church Street before reaching Williamson Square.

CARNIVAL CLOSING PARTY Haus, July 20 THE culmination of eights days of festival activity, the closing party is the colourful climax of Brazilica with a spectacular array of live samba performances and music from Brazilian DJs. The closing party will be held in HAUS Warehouse, on Greenland Street, from 10pm until 4am. Tickets are priced from £6 to £8 advance from Skiddle.com, or £10 on the door.

As well as a myriad of stalls to explore, the event will host arts and craft workshops from local creative businesses, including Craft Creative who’ll be running a tie dye workshop and teaching a ‘Pimp My Festival Wardrobe’ workshop. IF you’ve not yet seen the Alive: In The Face of Death exhibition by celebrated photographer, Rankin, get yourself to the Walker Art Gallery immediately.

Part of the LOOK/13 Liverpool International Photography Festival, the exhibition, which

runs until September, features more than 70 images in which the acclaimed photographer explores our perceptions of death.

Each image tells a story and challenges our perception of death – from death mask portraits of stars like Jarvis Cocker and Marlon Brando, to portraits of those who have faced death and survived, and those living with a terminal illness, like Sandra Barber (pictured).

Sandra has been battling breast cancer for eight years and, in his portrait of her, Rankin has portrayed her inner warrior because of her brave battle with the disease.

Striking, moving and challenging, the exhibition, which is free to enter, is on at the Walker Art Gallery on William Brown Street, until September 15.

STAR-SPANGLED LINE-UP

AMERICANA Weekend returns to the Liverpool Phillharmonic on Friday, July 26 to Sunday, July 28.

JULY 13 MAKING HIS MARC

Nautical but nice Michelle Rushton samples a tasty morsel at Liverpool Marina Bar & Grill WHEN two friends announced they were coming to Liverpool and wanted to meet me for lunch, I was all at sea as to where to take them.

I only had around an hour, so it needed to be somewhere close to Best of Liverpool towers on Old Hall Street.

Plus, I wanted them to see the city in its best light, so where to dine?

You can’t really beat the Liverpool waterfront but they were already familiar with the culinary delights of the Albert Dock. One place we had never tried though was the Liverpool Marina Bar & Grill.

A real hidden gem, the Marina is situated at Coburg Wharf, just outside the city centre, a few yards down from the Albert Dock. A great place to escape the stresses of city life, it has a really relaxed vibe, with its brightly coloured boats and yachts bobbing up and down and the breathtaking view of the Three Graces.

The Marina Bar & Grill can be found inside the clubhouse and has a modern, informal yet welcoming décor with lots of comfy leather chairs and dark wooden tables and flooring.

The menu is simple with the emphasis on fresh, home-cooked, comfort food with dishes ranging from Thai curry and chicken, leek and ham pie to sandwiches, burgers and steaks.

And, as can be expected from a maritime eatery, it features plenty of fishy options from moules mariniere and smoked salmon pâté to pan-fried sea bass and smoked haddock and spring onion fishcakes.

I ordered the chicken liver pâté (£4.50) which came served with red onions and balsamic marmalade, a crispy citrus salad and toasted sourdough bread.

The pâté was very moreish, especially when combined with the fruity marmalade, but being the gannet that I am, I find there’s never enough bread to mop it all up with.

But our friendly and accommodating waitress was only too happy to bring me more bread.

I opted for good old fashioned fish and chips for my main course (£8.95) and was greeted by a generously portioned cod in a lovely light and crispy beer batter and my favourite sort of chunky

chips which didn’t last very long at all.

But I avoided the mushy peas, which to me, are the food of the Devil...

The food was fabulous and very good value for money. We were so stuffed we couldn’t manage a pudding, so as it was a lovely sunny day, we chose to sit outside on the decking for a while with a glass of wine, relaxing, chatting and listening to the waves lapping against the boats.

I felt a million miles away from the stuffy office. Deadlines? What deadlines?!

“This is the life,” I thought to myself as I made a mental note to invest my forthcoming (imaginary) Lottery winnings on a superyacht...

CELEBRITY chef, Marco Pierre White, rebranded his Hoylake restaurant last month with a new name and a new concept.

Originally a joint venture between the Hell’s Kitchen star and champion jockey, Frankie Dettori, Frankie’s Bar & Grill restaurant was relaunched as Marco’s New York Italian on June 17. A new manager has taken the helm and a new menu created, which offers a range of Italian and American classics.

From primi dishes such as goat’s cheese arancini risotto fritters, garlic and lemon prawns, bruschetta and buffalo mozzarella with avocado, to mains like 28-day matured steaks, BBQ ribs, pastas, home-made pizzas and freshly-caught seafood, the menu offers an authentic taste of New York Italian.

A TASTE OF ITALY STANLEY Street was the scene of an Italian feast recently, as Delifonseca hosted a special Italian Wine Evening on Tuesday, June 11 in association with Umani Ronchi Wine Estate and Enotria World Wines.

Head chef Andy Hutchinson and the team at the Stanley Street eatery created a fourcourse menu especially for the occasion, with each course paired to a different Italian wine.

Wine maker Giorgio Pasanisi was also on-hand throughout the event to talk guest through the wine pairings and answer questions.

To start, diners tucked into Crab Linguini paired with Passerina Della Marche IGT 2012 and Verdicchio Classico Superiore 2012; whilst the main course of Roasted Rump of Herdwick Lamb with Olive Oil & Black Pepper Mash and Caponata, all washed down with Lacrima di Morro d’Alba, 2011 and Cumaro, Rosso Conero 2008.

And, to finish the evening on a sweet note, a traditional Vanilla Panna Cotta with Limoncello Granita was served for dessert.

Ingredients: 230g minced beef 1 tsp of wholegrain mustard l 1 tsp of tomato ketchup l 8g watercress l Salt and pepper l 1 small shallot, diced l l

And if you want to add a bit of a kick, 1 tsp of Tabasco sauce.

Method: l Finely chop the shallot and soften in a hot pan with a little butter, then allow to cool. l Finely chop the watercress as fine as you can. l Put the minced beef in a bowl add a pinch of salt and pepper and then add all the ingredients together and mix. l Shape the burger and you’re all ready for cooking. l

THIS recipe, which comes courtesy of Lakeland, does require a little forward planning as it needs to be marinated for at least three hours but then it only takes a few minutes to cook.

Ingredients: (serves 6) l l l l l l l

MARINATED TROUT WITH BBQ ASPARAGUS AND ROCKET A WONDERFUL early summer barbecue dish, British trout is widely available across the UK in supermarkets, fishmongers, delicatessens and farm shops. It can be bought whole, in fillets and either hot or cold smoked.

Serve with Jersey new potatoes cooked in mint and tossed in plenty of melted butter. For an effective look, use banana leaves to wrap the trout and spike with cocktail sticks or tie with string. The rocket aioli can be used as a dip or serve with BBQ garlic prawns.

Green Man Festival

Summer’s here and the festival scene is in full swing. Paul Baker checks out the best of the shows still to come this year, both at home and abroad AT one time Glastonbury totally ruled the roost and if you failed to grab a ticket to that (or jump over the fence) that was your summer festival chance gone!

How things have changed... Now you can’t go for a drive in the countryside without passing a field filled with revellers watching the ‘new’ Mumford & Sons, munching gourmet hot dogs and wearing designer wellies (just in case the weather lets everyone down).

It’s hard to put your finger on it, but there’s something about

standing in a muddy field with a pint in your hand, waving your illuminated mobile to a wistful rock ballad, or jigging like crazy to a ragged folksy tune.

While the combination of rain, camping, and crowds aren’t to everyone’s liking, it’s difficult to deny the enjoyment of the festival experience.

That’s probably why those canny festival gurus have tried to think of everything to make the experience more attractive. Modern festivals are usually replete with all mod-cons.

Don’t be surprised to see a general store, cash machines, shower blocks and ready-to-rent tents all set up, perhaps even caravans and chalets on or near the festival site.

Some festivals are just one day affairs so you don’t have to kip over, while others are mainly indoors so that soggy gales don’t even come into the equation.

So pull on those wellies, don a sun hat, grab a scrumpy and get out there and experience the UK festival circuit this summer.

Sure there’s your up and comings, loads of them. But there’s also Richard Herring, Josh Widdicombe, Marcus Brigstocke, Lee Nelson, Russell Kane, Tim Key, Daniel Kitson, Dylan Moran, Sean Lock and Eddie Izzard!

Plus there’s theatre, dance, film, spoken word and literary chats from world famous novelists, thinkers and artists.

Ramsbottom Festival

YOU might not have heard of this North West festival, but it’s been growing in size and interest for a number of years. This year looks set to be the best yet, attracting established international musicians, emerging artists and top DJs to a pleasant spot in Lancashire, just 45 miles from Liverpool. It’s a chance to enjoy great music, local food and fine ales in beautiful surroundings.

A TRAVELLING festival, Global Gathering is cool, even if it sounds a bit Greenpeace.

But when it says its goals are to break boundaries in order to bring the best electronic music to fans around the world, things are starting to sound a lot better.

First held in 2001 in the normally Shakespearean surrounds of Stratford Upon Avon, the festival has since got on its bike and lived up to its name, landing in the likes of America, Poland, Turkey, Russia, and Australia.

AN intimate Welsh festival which manages to attract decent names to its line-up each year, the Green Man might just be the most attractive setting for a UK festival.

Having attended a number of times in its 10 year history, I can vouch that the views of the Black Mountains are as impressive as anything seen on the main stage.

A refreshingly independent festival, this year it offers 10 entertainment areas in the Welsh wilderness, 1,500 performers, 24 hour entertainment, comedy, poetry, literature, science and more. Plus it’s family friendly.

FESTIVALS IN EUROPE THE UK festival scene is vibrant, no doubt. But the main issue is the weather.

It’s just so unpredictable, one moment you could be basking in the heat with Bruce Springsteen blasting out his hits, the next you’re getting drenched or slopping through the mud in your designer wellies.

Well, there is a way to stack the weather odds in your favour – head across the channel and check out some of the amazing festivals happening around Europe this summer.

These festivals are often quirky, well priced, packed with amazing music and allow you to combine the festival experience with a summer holiday.

KAZANTIP REPUBLIC, UKRAINE July 31-August 14 IT takes something truly special to impress the festival veteran but this Ukranian festival might just stun you.

You see Kazantip Republic is a non-existent state, not found on any map. It’s a parallel reality... a world where, for two weeks, the top musicians, DJs and tastemakers of the global electronic music scene descend to suggest a new world order. Futuristic dance floors and bars appear like art installations, kite surfers zip through the sea and everyone gathers at sunset to witness millions of yellow balloons ascend and cast shadows across the still warm beach.

TERRANEO FESTIVAL, CROATIA August 7-9

BERLIN FESTIVAL, GERMANY September 6-7 COMBINE a late summer festival with a European city break by heading out to the Berlin Festival this September.

The impressive line-up sees Björk, Blur, My Bloody Valentine, Pet Shop Boys, Ellie Goulding and many more descend on the city’s historic Tempelhof Airport and its former aeroplane hangars to transform it into a bustling metropolis of party people. As midnight strikes, the action moves to Club Xberg at Arena Berlin, where many of the biggest names in electronic and indie continue the party into the early hours. www.berlinfestival.de

IMAGINE a festival and a coastal retreat in one. That’s Croatia’s Terraneo, a new festival on the Dalmatian coastline.

It’s held in a disused military facility on the outskirts of the picturesque town of Sibenik. So far, so amazing.

The three day music programme will feature over 120 acts on three open-air stages and two DJ stages. During the festival the ex-military base transforms into a bustling little town with live performances from international acts, exhibitions, performances, entertainment, ecology, coupled with the chance to bask in the sun and bathe in the sea. www.terraneofestival.com

And don’t miss the ‘Saturday Night Special’ Lady Gaga tribute act performing some of her biggest hits on stage, plus helicopter rides, quad biking, a crafts marquee, trade stalls, food court and a fully licensed bar for mums and dads to catch a breather in between!

All in all this is truly an event not to be missed!

The Hot Air Balloon Festival is on from 12pm to 10pm on the Saturday and on Sunday from 12pm to 6pm.

The event is just £3 to enter with children under one metre tall going free.

There’s plenty of on site parking available for just £1, but organisers advise you get down there early to avoid disappointment.

The event is also easily accessed from Aintree railway station.
