Your guide to the UK’s Festival of Contemporary Art

LIVERPOOL BIENNIAL Tuesday, September 23, 2008

Welcome to Liverpool Biennial, the UK’s international festival of contemporary art, in Liverpool’s year as European Capital of Culture. Liverpool Biennial’s scale and quality is remarkable. Selected by prestigious panels from a massive entry, John Moores 25 and Bloomberg New Contemporaries 08 represent the work of 100 of the best artists from across the UK. The International exhibition, MADE UP, shows the work of 40 artists across 13 sites: six of these artists have previously represented their country at the Venice Biennale, and three are currently exhibiting in the Venice Architecture Biennale. Then there’s a huge and varied programme of exhibitions, from Le Corbusier, organised by the RIBA, to commercial gallery shows and ‘studio’ shows by emerging artists. Lewis Biggs Director, Liverpool Biennial “A super-sized web of light is the most captivating of many attractions...the Biennial weaves its way through streets and public places more imtimately than the equivalent contemporary art festivals of Istanbul and Venice...There is playfulness, ingenuity and joy in these works, rediscovering the wit of a city.” David Smith, The Observer

MADE UP starts here

Liverpool Biennial has teamed up with architects Pollard, Thomas, Edwards to create a fun and welcoming space inside the former ABC Cinema – set to become a New York-style supper club and 40-bedroom boutique hotel in the near future. The Art-Deco, Grade II listed cinema holds a special place in the memories of many people from Liverpool, who made regular visits between 1931 and 1998. The Visitor Centre, also hosts an installation by Annette Messager, whose work forms the beginning of whichever MADE UP Route you choose to follow. From 10.00 – 18.00 every day visitors can access monographs, catalogues and books on the artists and themes from the MADE UP exhibition, as well as computers, the MADE UP post box (developed by artist, Ross Dalziel) and regular activities, including a full programme of workshops during half-term week. It is a space to relax in, as well as to pick up information about the festival and its many elements and to catch-up with the experiences and contributions by other visitors as they respond to the artworks over the ten weeks. The Visitor Centre is your walk-in guide to and further inspiration for Liverpool Biennial 2008: staff and volunteers will be on hand to help you navigate the exhibitions and the city. In addition to buying MADE UP merchandise featuring the illustrations by legendary graphic artist, Mat Maitland, and the Liverpool Biennial brand, you can also buy merchandise featuring exclusive designs from MADE UP artists, David Blandy and The Royal Art Lodge. Please see the ‘Daily Board’ detailing the special events and activities happening at the Visitor Centre and around the City. Or visit www.biennial.com for further details.
