HE Liverpool Daily Post is famed for its award-winning photography. Every day we select the very best images taken by our professional photographers to illustrate the news, sport and features that matter to you. Images that draw the eye, compel the reader to scrutinise the detail, and linger in the memory long afterwards can sometimes be a far more effective way of telling the story than an article spread over two pages; the Daily Post has an enviable reputation for photo-journalism that it is very proud of. In January, 2008, the Daily Post started a group on the photosharing website Flickr, www.flickr.com/groups/ liverpooldailypost08, and invited people to share their images of Merseyside. These photos might be of people, places or events – they might be carefully posed or a chance moment in time captured forever by a lens – but the aim was to sum up the essence of Capital of Culture year.

We had no idea what response we would get; we hoped to give anyone who had taken a photo they enjoyed and wanted to share the opportunity to connect with like-minded people. And we were, quite simply, bowled over by the response. Today, there are more than 3,000 wonderful photographs on our Liverpool Daily Post Capital of Culture group on Flickr, and the number grows ever day. Periodically, we publish a selection of these images in the newspaper; today, we are delighted to bring you 12 pages packed with some of the most stunning images of Merseyside life and times you could ever wish to see. I am delighted photographers want to share their photos on our Flickr site; and I hope you enjoy this special tribute to their skill as much as we enjoyed compiling it.
