TIDY home is a tidy mind. Likewise, a messy, cluttered home can leave you feeling stressed, unsettled and positively miserable.

So why not unleash your inner minimalist and declutter your humble abode? Trust us, you will feel all the better for it.

The early months of every year are the ideal time to have a bit of a “throw-out”.

You’ve just come through the Christmas period, when often or not you’ve been given a long list of new bits and bobs to add to your already growing collections, from DVDs, books, CDs and shoes to a new telly and hi-fi system.

The kids, naturally, will have acquired about a hundred new toys from Santa and his elves, including a dozen sets of coloured pencils, three new bags of Lego and a doll’s house with assorted furniture and wooden figures.

Of course you’re all very grateful for the presents, and have been delightedly playing with them non-stop since Christmas Day morning.

But where on earth do you put all this new stuff ?

Well, nowadays, storage has become an art form in itself and big business! There are plenty of solutions out there that will not only help you to create a minimalist Mecca, but which look amazing, too.

First things first, have a good clear out – and don’t be afraid to throw things away, especially sentimental objects which you never look at anymore and are just left sitting there gathering dust.

Living without clutter is the key to a tidy house

Other tips include organising stationery so it gets used and not just collected, and think before you next buy holiday souvenirs and other pointless items. Ask yourself – do you really need them?

A good motto to have is “one in, two out,” meaning, every time you buy yourself and your home a new item – whether it’s a magazine or a cushion – you have to throw out two of the same thing.

Tackle one room at a time, and remember, there is no point just diverting clutter into a little pile in the corner. Clutter attracts clutter, and sooner or later you’ll end up with a mountain of junk and the vicious cycle starts all over again.

And every hoarder should hold a car boot sale at least once a year – just don’t go on the buy while you’re there!

Once the house is tidy and clutter-free, it’s then down to the most exciting part – storing the few things you have left.
