Shoppers spoilt for choice as store opens its doors

I

T’S BEEN a long time in coming but it’s been worth the wait.

The new Debenhams store opens its doors tomorrow and, as our exclusive pictures show, looks to be just what Liverpool, capital of style, needs. “We’re very proud of what’s been achieved here,” says deputy store manager David Slater. “Now we’re really looking forward to welcoming our first customers and hearing their feedback.”

The arrival of Debenhams means that shoppers who once had to trail to Manchester or the Trafford Centre need now only walk up Lord Street for a fashion fix.

Once through the door first impressions are good. Light pours in, stock is laid out in a you-know-youwant-to-buy-me kind of way and the feel is modern and contemporary, even down to the futuristic elevator. The store may also boast one of the best views of the entire Liverpool ONE development, with diners in its restaurant able to gaze out upon Chavasse Park through an entire wall of glass. But you can’t judge a book by its cover and content is key. And this is where Debs will really score in Liverpool, bringing with it a raft of new fashion and beauty names into the city for the first time. John Rocha, Ben de Lisi and Jasper Conran are the sort of highprofile labels that no self respecting shopping centre should be without. Tipped to be a big seller in Liverpool is Julien Macdonald’s latest collection for summer. All bold colours and strong prints, it’s ideal for city’s girls who want the wow factor when they’re going out. The guys haven’t been forgotten, either, with a huge men’s wear department featuring names such as St George by Duffer, Maine,

Super store: Debenhams is a shopper’s paradise while the cafe (inset )is great to relax in

Mantaray, Thomas Nash and Red Herring.

Every girl loves shoes and the Liverpool store will have one of Debenham’s biggest departments. Teamed with handbags courtesy of

Mathew Williamson, Mescha Barton

and Jasper Conran it’s set to be a mecca for accessory queens everywhere. In the beauty hall you could be forgiven for thinking you’d been transported to London or even New York.

It’s vast, with a sea of gorgeous make-up counters all carrying the latest products. There is also a whole wall of new names including Urban Decay, Too Faced and, for the first time outside London, bareMinerals. There’s a brow bar, hair bar and nail bar and for those in need of a bronzed glow even a selection of St Tropez tanning booths. This is certainly a store for the 21st century. Together with female personal shoppers there’s a male one, too, and

there’s even a mini ‘man creche’ where, while you shop until you drop, your partner can chill out. When it was announced that Debenhams was coming to the city it sparked high hopes among all of us who love a spot of retail therapy. At first sight those hopes have more than been realised. ◆ The store will open for business tomorrow at 10am.

Bigger, brighter and a breeze

IT’S the escalators that strike you when you first enter the new John Lewis. After years of negotiating stairs, unpredictable lifts and adjoining buildings on the former Church Street site, navigating the new store will be a breeze – quite literally, as it’s also got air conditioning. The new five-storey department store in Paradise Street is, at 240,000 square feet, 40% larger than the former George Henry Lee, making it the third biggest John Lewis in the country. While it’s certainly bigger and brighter, making full use of huge windows looking out into the Liverpool ONE development, it doesn’t feel too alien because of the familiar signage and displays. It might no longer have the Grace Bros feel which was part of the charm of its former 155 year-old home, but there is certainly still plenty for the traditional shopper. The

haberdashery department, while occupying a smaller space, has more stock and is located by huge windows which allows customers to pick fabrics in a natural light. A total of £38m has been invested in the new store and it shows. Shoppers will love the 300-seater restaurant A Place To Eat which boasts sweeping views over Chavasse Park towards Albert Dock. The fashionconscious male is better catered for with men’s fashion, on the ground floor, expanded by 80%. New arrivals French Connection, Timberland and Ungaro are set to share the racks with current brands Ted Baker, Diesel and Boss. And ladies who lunch are in for a treat with the 100-seater Espresso Bar near women’s fashions on the first floor which, again, has great views towards the waterfront and

artwork by local artist Nathan Pendlebury from Bootle. New brands in women’s wea, such as Fat Face, White Stuff and Noa Noa, will feature alongside current favourites including French Connection and a larger Coast concession. New shoe brands include LK Bennett, Warehouse and DKNY. I was particularly excited to spy some Clarins beauty rooms. New brands are also being introduced in the make-up and beauty department, including an organic skin care range by Stella McCartney. Tony Spence-Eavans, operations manager for John Lewis says: “We hope shoppers will be dazzled by the new store. ” The old George Henry Lee held a special place in the hearts of Liverpool shoppers, a testimony to the staff as much as to the store itself. I’m sure the new John Lewis will do the same. ◆ John Lewis Liverpool opens its doors tomorrow at 10.15am.

Look John Lewis Fashion: Inside Liverpool ONE

The top choice for skin care BEAUTY has never looked so good. Liverpool girls have long held the reputation for having more than a passing interest in the latest make-up and skin care. So what better time to take a look at the newest trends than in the week two flagship department stores – complete with enormous beauty halls – open in the city. Both will feature a host of new brands, many never seen in Liverpool before. Look has had a sneak preview. ◆ Pop at Debenhams If you love colour and want show-stopping results then this is for you. The products are innovative, inspiring and, once applied, can create knock-‘emdead eyes and killer cheekbones. Perfect to team with high summer’s bold, holiday colours. ◆ Cowshed at John Lewis Cheekily-named, gorgeously indulgent, this bath and beauty collection uses essential oils and herbs to give a distinctive signature fragrance. We’re big fans of their Cow Pat Moisturising Hand cream (£15) but check out their homes range, too. ◆ Urban Decay at Debenhams Trend-setting cosmetics with an edge, this is make-up that’s ultra feminine but just a touch dangerous. From brightly-coloured mascaras to loose-pigment eye shadows this range will get you noticed whatever your age. Must-have product for this season? The de-slick mattifying powder with its rice powder formula (£15). ◆ Care by Stella McCartney at John Lewis This is the first luxury skin care range that’s 100% organic and is inspired by Stella’s own vegetarian and environmental principles. From the cleansing milk to the stunning radiance and youth elixir, this is top-end gorgeousness that aims to give your skin everything it needs and nothing it shouldn’t. ◆ Jelly Pong Pong at Debenhams Made in Italy this is a witty, quirky and unusual cosmetics range that will stand out in any make-up bag. Using bespoke ingredients, Jelly Pong Pong is, say its makers, ‘only tested on starlets’. Our favourite product? ‘Cellulite free’ eye shadow (£10).. ◆ Duwop at Debenhams The brand used by the stars, these products are created using inside knowledge of what’s needed to look glamorous on screen. Shimmers and gloss colours are big sellers. The perfect brand for those who want their make-up to work hard. ◆ Elemis at John Lewis The big daddy of spa brands favoured by more than 5.7 million spa-goers every year. The successful combination of natural, active ingredients with cutting-edge technology has enabled Elemis to bring to market some of the most influential anti-ageing products and professional spa-therapies in the beauty industry. ◆ Stila at Debenhams Easy-to-use, high-quality products that work just as well for a mum-on-the-go as a seasoned make-up artist. The key is multi-tasking formulas as well as wearability, taking catwalk trends and helping you make them your own. ◆ Leighton Denny at Debenhams Renowned nail technician expert Leighton Denny has created a range of nail care and pedicure treatments for perfectly groomed hands and feet. His celebrity client list includes Jade Jagger, Penelope Cruz, Shirley Bassey and Kate Moss and if it’s good enough for them ... ◆ Too Faced at Debenhams Considered a favourite among today’s hottest fashion stylists, Too Faced is used on movie sets, music videos and television programmes including Desperate Housewives and The OC. Wearable but always with a twist – like this eyeshadow set that can be used all over the face.

Look Meet the boss: Inside Liverpool ONE

Our opening tomorrow is just the start of the journey

EXCITED: Joanne Jennings chief executive of Liverpool ONE

Susan Lee talks to Liverpool ONE chief executive Joanne Jennings about the challenges ahead – and the fact that she’s a little busy at the moment!

A

Shop Window

Time to shop! Liverpool ONE is about to open, bringing a raft of new shops. But what are the hottest trends for summer? We speak to the girls in the know – the staff on the shop floor. Sian Gulliford, 21, lives in Birkenhead. She works for All Saints What’s she wearing? Grey chariot top, black slip, black sandals and a Stars necklace How much? Slip, £30; top, £120; sandals, £115; necklace, £45 She’s loving it because? “They’re so different to what’s on offer in other stores. It’s also a young, vibrant look.” Top trend tip? “The tribal influence is huge. There’s a focus on layering, too.”

S CHIEF executive of Europe’s biggest city centre retail development you might think Joanne Jennings would be afforded some exclusive, before-opening shopping.

But not a bit of it. “Although now you’ve put the idea in my head I may suggest it,” she laughs. “What a lovely idea – being like Posh and Becks and have them close a store for you! But no, I love a bit of retail therapy and I’m as excited as anyone about seeing all those new shops opening.” Not that Joanne has had an awful lot of time recently to go rifling the rails. With the opening of Liverpool ONE just hours away she admits things in her world are ‘pretty busy’. “But tomorrow’s opening is just the start of the journey really,” she explains. “The opening was brought forward by six months to take advantage of Capital of Culture in the city and the second phase of the development takes place in September when we give back the park and unveil more retail as well as nightlife.

“There will be stores coming on board between now and then as well so there’s so much still going on. Tomorrow isn’t the end but I can’t help being excited about it.” Joanne is originally from County Down in Northern Ireland and is the former chief executive of Belfast City Centre Management Company. She was a key player in the renaissance of that city centre just as the Northern Ireland peace process was being launched and is now a recognised specialist in urban regeneration. Crucially she has form for facing a challenge, be it political or economic. The opportunity to head up the Liverpool ONE project was one she admits she relished not just because of the challenge itself but the fact that it was in Liverpool. “And the city has seduced me,” admits the keen cyclist who cites taking on Liverpool ONE as her biggest achievement to date. “Of course I knew it was one of the UK’s greatest cities and I knew it was a fantastic job but since coming and living here I’ve been bowled over. “I have a city centre apartment and have experienced city centre living. Do I have any plans to move?

MAGNIFICENT: An aerial view of No, not at all.” But plans for the city she has aplenty.

“The idea is that we will move Liverpool up from No. 15 in the retail list to the top five.”

She adds: “Liverpool is a great place but it really needed this injection into the city centre. It’s a huge opportunity,” says Joanne who has a masters degree in marketing. The £1bn Liverpool ONE project will ultimately deliver 42 acres of shopping, leisure and lifestyle with more than 160 shops and restaurants, two new hotels and a 14-screen cinema as well as office and residential space. “The two big department stores are fabulous. It’s the largest John Lewis outside London and Debenhams is fantastic. They both have a different look to normal department stores,” Joanne

Liverpool ONE explains. Her own taste in fashion is eclectic. “I’m a confirmed shopper and I’m as much a fan of high street fashion as I am of designer. You’re as likely to find me in Hobbs as in Primark.” Now in her 30s Joanne says she returns to her home town regularly. And not just to see the family she has over there. “I’m interested in encouraging people from Northern Ireland to come to Liverpool as tourists. The transport links are there, afte rall.” In the past she has said that, as a teenager, she was unsure what she wanted to do and considered careers both in law and journalism. Ultimately, she says, she simply wanted to make a difference. The first indication of whether she has succeeded will come tomorrow.

Are you Liverpool’s answer to SATC chic?

I

T’S the biggest launch of the year encompassing great fashion, sexy style and cutting edge trends.

No, not the opening of Debenhams – the new Sex And The City film which hits cinemas this week. Now we’ve teamed up with the city’s newest department store to offer you and three chums a chance to experience life as Carrie, Miranda, Samantha and Charlotte. Up for grabs is a glamorous shopping day at the store with cash to spend as well as the services of a personal shopper to guide you around the rails. But that’s not all. You and your friends will be treated to a sumptuous champagne breakfast on arrival where you can raise a glass to friendship.

Then take advantage of the store’s new tanning booths with a luxury spray tan to give you that summer glow. Move into the beauty hall and you can all relax while enjoying an eyebrow shape and manicure each and then it’s off to

the hair bar for a quick dry styling. Then you’ll each have £100 to spend around the store and if you need help with sizes, cuts or colours one of Debenhams’ personal shoppers will be on hand to help. And together with your shopping bags you’ll

also have goodies from a Sarah Jessica Parker cosmetics hamper. To be in with a chance of winning, write and tell us why you could be Liverpool’s answer to the Sex And The City girls. Maybe you’ve known each other since school and been together through life’s ups and downs.

Maybe you’re workmates who go through the nine-to-five grind together or you’ve met because your kids are friends and love nothing more than a chat at the school gate.

Write and tell us why your friendship is special.

We’ll publish the winners and follow your big Sex And The City day in the ECHO. Send your entry to: Debenhams Competition, C/O Susan Lee.
