SOUTHPORT sculptor is helping ensure the health and well-being of our favourite garden birds, while creating bespoke pieces of garden sculpture!

David Manning – who sculpted the lanterns in Wayfarers Arcade off Lord Street – is the brains behind the Birdbath Pigeon Deterrent.

The hand-made garden sculptures are crafted from polished brass and copper and each one is bespoke and unique, made especially to fit your birdbath dimensions.

invention came about: “The RSPB have confirmed that the number of wood pigeons visiting gardens is increasing.

“When larger birds use birdbaths the water quickly becomes contaminated with droppings, algae, parasites and bacteria carried on the birds.

“The sculpture is designed to create enough space for our smaller garden birds to use the birdbath while deterring the larger birds, which are stronger flyers and can use natural water outlets to bathe and drink.”

David makes a range of sizes to fit most birdbaths, each one

offering adjustment to create the perfect fit.

The sculpture sits on the inside rim and is held in place by its own weight.

DINING tranquillity, picturesque surroundings, good home cooked food, if any of this is making your mouth water, then look no further than Romance Restaurant Boat.

There are many superlatives to describe my outing on the Leeds / Liverpool Canal, different, memorable and exclusive to name but a few.

We arrived at the bank of the canal in Appley Bridge on a glorious Sunday afternoon after being invited down to sample a taste of what Romance had to offer.

Owner Roger Bush has taken a lot of care and consideration in the detail of the restaurant boat and the end product is quality venue with that added quirky interest.

We set out from Appley Bridge with the aromas of our Sunday lunch drifting down the barge: the first course was a delicious bowl of vegetable soup served with butter and a crusty roll.

The atmosphere was extremely relaxed and Roger is an exceedingly friendly and informative host. There is also

a chance to participate actively in the cruise if you happen to come upon a lock or two, which is a welcome novelty for any passenger.

We were gently cruising in the direction of Parbold taking in the scenery as we were served our main course of Beef roast dinner, including all the seasonal trimmings.

The restaurant boat has an extensive menu and the set menus are tailored to provide meals that are popular with everyone who dines, this makes for a smooth service from the kitchen and an excellent team of staff helps this along as well.

The roast meats are very popular and it’s not difficult to see why!

We moored for a while in Parbold to take in the sights of the old mill and the rest of the beautiful village before making our way back in the direction of Appley Bridge. On the return journey we were offered a selection of desserts from Sticky Toffee Pudding with Custard and Jam Roly Poly to Cheesecake and Fresh Fruit with Cream. The staff on board were attentive and friendly, couple this with great food and views that you can’t buy and you’ve got yourself a first class meal out.

One happy customer said, “We all had a lovely day and my dad had a great time on his birthday, I think helping with the locks made his day. ”The boat is lovely and the food was just fantastic, the whole package is ideal, so relaxing and the sunny weather arrived right on time”.

Wine and dine or shop 'til you drop T

HE Crosby area is a great place to live, to work and to shop in.

With excellent road and rail links to Southport, Liverpool and beyond, a wide choice of housing, many good schools, plus parks, a beach and other leisure amenities, it offers much to both residents and visitors alike.

And the area is more than simply Crosby village, with its identity also tied up with the districts of Waterloo and Blundellsands. In fact Crosby Library, Crosby Civic Hall and Crosby Marina are all in Waterloo.

There are a variety of different shopping areas, with main facilities on the high streets of Crosby and Waterloo and a number of other smaller retail areas round and about.

Crosby village itself is found at the intersection of Liverpool Road, Coronation Road and Moor Lane.

Here there are a mixture of local businesses, from card shops to hardware stores, alongside some bigger shops and a supermarket.

The local shops continue, spreading out from the centre of the village, where there are also a number of pubs and restaurants – just stroll down Liverpool Road or Cooks Road and explore.

Alternatively, head off along Coronation Road and you’ll pass a row of shops, including bakeries, newsagents, pubs, grocery shops and more, leading down to Crosby’s other main shopping area at College Road.

It’s also the home of Marine FC, who play in the Northern Premier League.

These shopping areas, plus another on Bridge Road, serve most of Crosby,

Blundellsands and the seafront area of Brighton-le-sands. Waterloo has its own shops, centred around the South Road and St John’s Road areas.

South Road is easily reached thanks to having Waterloo railway station and bus exchange on the street. Its top end connects with Crosby Road North and runs in a straight line right down to Crosby Marine Lake and then on across the dunes to the beach where Anthony Gormley’s Another Place sculpture begins.

South Road itself is jam-packed with businesses, from clothing stores to charity shops, bakeries to greengrocers, off licences to chemists, supermarkets to home and gardens stores, plus a huge choice of restaurants, pubs, wine bars and takeaways. It really is a vibrant street.

Waterloo is served by a number of supermarkets too. The smaller shops continue along Crosby Road North, past the Plaza Cinema, the bookmaker’s, card shops and on to St John’s Road. This second shopping street runs almost as far as South Road and houses an eclectic mix of businesses, from florists and butcher’s, arts and craft stores, barbershops, newsagents, a gym and a wide choice of charity stores to rummage through. There’s also a fair share of intimate eateries and takeaways.

All in all, Crosby and Waterloo has a huge choice of different shops and stores. With its excellent transport links, so many bars and restaurants and loads of leisure opportunities nearby, it’s certainly a great place for a day of shopping and fun.

Founded in 1952 by Douglas McCallum and Charles Tritton, assisted by Charles’ wife Eileen Tritton, the partners originally started their careers as motor mechanics but soon added private hire and limousine hire to their business.

The Government Scrappage Scheme is available from 18th May 2009 until the Government funding is utilised or until 28/02/2010 (whichever is sooner). The Nissan British Built Trade in Scheme (NBBTS) is available until 30/09/2009.
