ISSAN is about to rewrite the style book with the sensational new Juke – the funkiest car of the year. Looking like a baby version of the top selling Qashqai, the Juke goes on sale in September priced from £12,795. Aimed at drivers who want to be different it’s got the likes of the MINI, Fiat 500 and Citroen DS3 firmly in its sights. More importantly, the Juke is built in Britain at Nissan’s Sunderland factory where it is helping to secure more than 4,000 jobs. Not only is the Juke totally different to any other little hatch it has also got an amazing interior – and like its rivals there are personal touches available to make it even more distinctive. Inside there are high gloss trim finishes either in red or grey while the bulging centre console creates a cockpit feel. Nissan says this feature was inspired by a motorcycle fuel tank and the biking theme continues in the way the instruments are clustered under a cowl behind the steering wheel. The Juke is a car that’s almost off the fun factor scale and it has definite man appeal. Like the Qashqai its lines are bold and bulbous but emphasised at the front with large circular lamps, a sporty grille pattern and round air intakes in the front spoiler which Nissan has dubbed the wine rack effect. It’s also available in some bright paint jobs including startling red and blue finishes. Go the whole hog and there are roof decals, chrome door mirror caps and body stripes available as options. When it comes to design, the Juke throws hatchback convention to the wind – and it also delivers on the road. Handling is nice and sharp and there is a new 1.6-litre direct injection turbo petrol engine on the top range models. Nissan is well and truly

STAR TURN: The new Nissan Juke is aimed at drivers who want to be different

Smart new Juke is anything but boxy cranking up the crossover craze with the Juke, building on the niche carved out by the larger Qashqai. With SUV looks but a hatchback audience the Qashqai has been a huge success for Nissan. The Juke is the new kid on the crossover block and as well as the turbo version it will also be available with a normally aspirated 1.6-litre petrol engine and a 1.5-litre diesel. Most will be front wheel drive but top specification models will have

the option of four-wheel-drive. The electronic drive system used on the Juke is more advanced than that of the Qashqai. In general use it comes into play only when needed but the clever feature is that it can move 100 per cent of the power across the back axle as necessary producing a very grippy and sporty drive. It is quite ‘quattro-esque’ when put through its paces and performance of 0 to 60 in 8.4 seconds is not bad either. The front

wheel drive version is even quicker at eight seconds. Average fuel consumption in the all-wheel-drive Juke is a claimed 33.6 mpg while the two wheel drive model is slightly more economical at 35.3. The diesel is the most fuel efficient averaging around 55 mpg with CO2 emissions of 134g/km and although not as quick as the petrol version it has plenty of mid-range kick. CO2 figures for the turbo all wheel drive are 175 g/km, 159 for

the two wheel drive and 147 for the normal 1.6 engine. Trim levels will be Nissan’s traditional Visia, Acenta and Tekna ranges and the 1.6 turbo with four wheel drive will be the flagship in Tekna specification only priced at £19,995, including sat nav. Diesels cost from £14,195. All models come with air-con, electric windows and electronic stability controls while Bluetooth and USB connections are standard on Acenta and Tekna versions.
