TICK a 1.4-litre engine in a decent size off-roader and the expectation is one of severely compromised performance.

But Volkswagen had such confidence in its pioneering TSI unit that the German company launched the much-heralded Tiguan with just the one petrol powerplant.

And a cracker it is too. A new engine to the VW stable, it uses twin-charging technology – both a turbo and supercharger – to produce high power and low emissions from a small capacity unit.

The result is 150bhp of punch allied to substantial pulling power, capable of a 0-62mph time of 9.3 seconds and a class-leading towing capacity of up to 2,500kg.

It’s smooth and refined too, at no point struggling to keep up the pace or show enough kick for overtaking.

If you’re curious as to why I have focused on the engine – there’s also a 2.0 TDI diesel – rather than the actual car, it’s because so many people showed interest in its design and practicality only to turn up their noses when I told them the powerplant was 1.4 litres.

Tiguan, launched in the UK earlier this year, is Volkswagen’s first compact sports utility vehicle and looks like a scaled down version of the heavy duty Touareg.

It’s an attractive, well designed car – and needs to be, given that it is up against some serous opposition like the Land Rover Freelander, Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4.

So where does the Tiguan score points? Well among its principal

POWER: 150PS at 5,800rpm.

PERFORMANCE: 0-62 in 9.3 secs, top speed 119mph.

ECONOMY: 26.6mpg Urban, 40.4 Extra Urban, 33.6 Combined.

CO2 EMISSIONS: 199g/km.

BIK RATING: 27%.

INSURANCE: Group 9.

PRICE: £20,680 on the road.

PIONEERING: The Tiguan powerplant uses both a turbo and supercharger to produce high power and low emissions attributes is VW’s 4MOTION four-wheel drive system which switches drive automatically to ensure maximum traction depending on road conditions.

That said, only the range-topping Escape models are set up for serious off-road work and unlike the S, SE and Sport trim grades they have a front end that angles back at 28 degrees for better ground clearance.

Inside, the Tiguan is trademark VW with tough, accessible switchgear and

durable seats that can comfortably accommodate five people.

In rear there’s a 60/40 split/fold bench – positioned slightly higher with kids in mind – that can also be slid forward or back by up to 16cms to maximise legroom or luggage.

And if the centre rear seat isn’t in use it can be folded down to make an armrest with cupholder. There’s also useful luggage capacity.

The electronic parking brake may not be to everyone’s taste but it does

help free up space and also includes an auto-hold function.

Standard spec is extensive but adding optional extras bumps the tab up considerably – the likes of a premium DVD-based satnav with 6-disc CD changer and rear view camera costing £2,175, leather upholstery with heated front seats and heated washer jets £1,450, park assist £450, rear side airbags £225, panoramic sunroof £795 and pearl effect paint another £365.

Ford’s trendy new baby makes its world debut

A NEW baby Ford is on the way 12 years after the original Ford Ka caused a stir with its funky looks.

Due to make its world debut at the Paris Motor Show in October, the new Ford Ka will join the manufacturer’s latest line-up of distinctively-styled models.

Hot on the heels of the new Fiesta, which has just made its first appearance at the British Motor Show, the latest Ka will be larger than its predecessor.

It shares its underpinnings with the popular Fiat 500 and will be built alongside the Italian model in Poland.

The 500 has already been crowned European Car of the Year for 2008 which gives an indication

of the appeal the new Ford is likely to have.

Ford has just released the first images of the new Ka showing off its angular lines but still retaining some of the 'bubble' shape of the original.

Inside it looks trendy and ultra modern with a raised gearlever, two-tone mouldings and snazzy upholstery.

The Fiat 500 has become a credible rival to the MINI and can be heavily personalised by buyers.

With prices starting at under £8,000, it is also highly competitive.

The Ka is likely to be in a similar mould although it is not clear if Ford will offer so many ways to

customise the little newcomer.

The original Ka made its debut in 1996 and buyers went crazy for it – more than a million being sold.

“We are very excited about the launch of the new Ka”, said Roelant de Waard, chairman and managing director, Ford of Britain.

“The original has been a huge hit in the UK with a sales record of more than 480,000. I'm confident that the latest design will prove just as big a hit.”

Focus on a success story T

EN years, give or take a few months, since its original launch, the Ford Focus finally looks the slick, edgy and distinguished car to match its terrific dynamics.

It also has an unrivalled record of sales figures and awards.

The interior is completely new, but the real deal with the latest version of the Focus is its kinetic design styling, giving the car still greater poise, as well as providing extra space in the cabin, particularly for rearseat passengers.

The new design means a bolder new face, dramatically swept-back headlamps, pronounced wheel lips and, at the rear, a more contoured tailgate.

The Ford Focus is an altogether more racy car, especially in the estate, which joins three and fivedoor hatchbacks. In addition, the coupe cabriolet, the fiery ST and saloon models arrived in March.

The electro-hydraulic steering is crisp and there’s plenty of feedback, while the new version of the Independent Control Blade multi-link rear suspension adds even more to the car’s

traditional good manners.

This spring saw two other important landmarks in the Focus success story – ECOnetic and PowerShift.

The more important is ECOnetic. The company has been able to reduce CO2 levels courtesy of some aerodynamic adjustments, meaning these models are down to emissions of 114g/km in the 90PS model and 115g/km in the 110PS version – and just £35 a year road tax.

PowerShift is a new, sixspeed double-clutch automatic transmission, similar to the DSG box used

by Volkswagen, and is standard on the 2.0-litre 110PS TDCi and optional on the 136PS turbodiesel. Every car includes Ford’s Easyfuel capless system, which stops people putting petrol into a diesel tank and vice versa.

Starting point with the new range is the 1.4-litre Focus Studio three-door hatchback at £11,945, while most popular is predicted to be the 1.6 Zetec petrol fivedoor at £15,295. Autumn target for new Porsche Targa

ORSCHE has lifted the lid on the latest 911 Targa, which will be letting the sun shine in just in time for the end of summer and the beginning of autumn.

The German company says that the arrival of the new models heralds the fastest-ever model change in the long history of the 911.

Two new engines with direct fuel injection improve performance and economy, a new double-clutch gearbox replaces the optional Tiptronic S automatic transmission and electronically-controlled traction management takes the place of the former viscous-coupling all-wheel drive system.

The latest addition to the new generation 911 line-up comes as before in two variants of 911 Targa 4 and 911 Targa 4S. The Targa 4 version is powered by a 3.6-litre flat-six engine developing 345bhp to give the car a top speed of 176mph.

The Targa 4S uses a 3.8-litre version of the same engine, developing 385bhp for a top speed of 185mph.

The newcomers arrive here during the third week of October, with prices from £72,980 for the Targa 4 and £80,270 for the Targa 4S. As the name suggests, they both have

When opened completely the roof slides beneath the tailgate in seven seconds to create an open space above the passenger compartment of 0.45

square metres.

There is also a new electrically-controlled sunblind that can be opened and closed independently of the roof itself.

The glass roof and the tailgate are made from specially-treated glass that deflects the sun’s glare just as though they are made from steel.

These latest 911 Targa models are distinguished by the discreet modification of the nose and tail and the use of new lighting technology.

However, the best thing about the revisions is the name given to the optional double clutch transmission system, which costs £2,338 and is called Doppelkupplungsgetriebe!

AFTER a quarter of a century of production it must be difficult to come up with new ideas for the Micra but Nissan has risen to the challenge and introduced the aptly-named Micra 25.

Painted in eye-catching deep purple, it has silver-effect door mirrors, handles and body mouldings with new wheel trims too.

Rear privacy glass is fitted and there is now iPod connectivity with a docking station designed for the iPod nano plus audio control buttons on the steering wheel.

For real Micra nuts wanting to celebrate the car's Silver Jubiliee there is a Micra-engraved 4Gb iPod nano.

The engine line-up includes 1.2 and 1.4-litre petrol and 1.5-litre dCi engines while the 1.6-litre petrol engine is available on the Micra C+C. Prices start at £9,395 for the 1.2-litre petrol three-door version rising to £16,600 for the 1.6-litre C+C with automatic transmission.
