A NEW management team at Mercedes-Benz of Liverpool is helping the retailer buck industry trends.

Despite the apparent doom and gloom surrounding the motor sector, the Pall Mall operation is thriving – selling 81 cars in the past three weeks alone and topping the sales league for May within the Inchcape Group’s 12 Mercedes-Benz retailers.

The site also achieved the highest sales for a recent coupé/cabrio weekend staged by every Mercedes-Benz outlet nationwide.

Key to the Liverpool success has been the appointment of a new management team consisting of general manager David Savage, general sales manager Tony Price and service manager Terry Hackett, who share more than 75 years experience and have represented some of the biggest names in the motor trade within the North West.

SEAT is celebrating a brace of sales records, as the Spanish brand's used car success continues to go from strength to strength.

The latest figures show SEAT UK Used Cars enjoyed a bumper sales spree last month, notching up no fewer than 915 vehicles in May smashing the previous best by some distance and setting a new record for used car sales in the process.

The Ibiza supermini led the way and was followed by keen interest among SEAT dealers in the Leon family hatch and Altea MPV.

EAUTY beyond comparison, brutal reminders of man’s capacity for violence and an event many felt would never come about – it was all happening at the start of the 1990s.

In the space of a few months Nelson Mandela was released from the Victor Verster prison near Cape Town, gangster epic Goodfellas was nominated for six Academy Awards and Michelle Pfeiffer graced the cover of People magazine’s ’50 Most Beautiful People in the World’ issue.

And who could forget Nothing Compares 2U, which propelled shaven-headed Irish singer Sinead O’Connor to the top of the charts, for a full month.

It was also the year the first generation Mazda MX-5, the car that single-handedly energised the small and affordable roadster market, was launched.

The timing couldn’t have been better and an audience crying out for fun, stylish, wind in the hair motoring made it an instant success.

The pricing was pitched at a competitive level, appreciably lower than its two key rivals the Lotus Elan and TVR S2,

by MIKE TORPEY Motoring Editor and by the end of the year 2,246 Britons had splashed the cash.

Twenty years on from the MX-5’s unveiling at the 1989 Chicago Motor Show and a new sharper, leaner and greener Mazda has joined the party.

To mark the anniversary Mazda UK scoured the country for some early examples, paying between £1,500 and £2,500 for 10 cars and putting them on the road alongside the latest models.

A long and certainly one of the most beautiful driving routes in Britain – through the highlands of Scotland – afforded the chance to compare the generations. The outcome was an eye-opener.

The 2009 Mazda MX-5 range of soft-top and roadster coupe sports cars costs from £16,345, amazingly just £1,420 dearer than the original.

You have the choice of 1.8 or 2.0-litre engines, the latter boasting stability control and a new sound enhancer for a more throaty exhaust note.

And with its 12-second

operating time, the roadster coupe has the world’s fastest powered retractable hard top.

My test model also featured a new ‘PowerShift’ automatic paddle-shift transmission, which adds to the fun factor.

Plenty of punch – 0-62mph in 8.2 seconds – and first class handling resulted in an exciting, if polished, driving experience.

Time then to switch cars and hop behind the wheel of a 1993 model with the original 1.6-litre 116PS engine. No electronic wizardry here, even though it only takes a matter of seconds to unclip the lid and fold back the hood.

I can’t overstate what a terrific car this is to drive.

Pure and engaging, it’s just what open-top motoring should be about – and you aren’t faced with a confusing array of buttons and switches, just the air vents, heater controls and a few dials.

Most surprising of all though was that this model had already done more than 143,000 miles and was still going strong – a testament to Mazda’s reliability.

Okay, with the hood down 40mph feels more like 70 but the sheer enjoyment and fabulous looks – few if any mainstream cars have aged so

well – make this a car you feel proud to be seen in.

Another swop, this time to a 1992 special edition – there were 13 limited edition models before the second generation MX-5 arrived in 1998 – and another chunk of motoring magic.

This one came with black paintwork and time-honoured tan leather interior, wood and chrome steering wheel, mahogany trim, unique alloys, anti-lock brakes and a mere 118,000 miles on the clock.

Everywhere we stopped people came to look inside and chat about the car (not bad for something that cost just over £2,000 on the used market).

Then there was the scenery.

Spectacular seascapes, mist hovering over the mountain tops conjuring images of the Mountains of Moria in Lord of the Rings, then the unspoiled beauty of the remote Red Point beach – apparently the Queen’s favourite.

It was a step back in time but also a glimpse ahead, because if there’s an affordable car future generations are going to collect it will probably be the original Mazda MX-5. I’m on the hunt.

Shakin’ up for the future A

CONTENDER for rear of the year is on the way from Renault, in the shape of a new Megane estate.

Its predecessor was well known for “shakin’ that ass” and the latest Sport Tourer is in the same mould.

With crescent-shaped rear light clusters curving in from the wings into the tailgate, the new Megane is out to cut a dash.

Priced from £15,485 to £22,785, the newcomer will be competing with estate versions of the Ford Focus, Vauxhall Astra and the Peugeot 308SW. The Renault undercuts its rivals by a few hundred pounds and will be available in four trim levels when it goes on sale in August.

All versions have electronic stability controls, air conditioning, a full set of airbags and come with the option of Renault’s built-in Carminat TomTom navigation system.

While the plastic housing surrounding the sat nav screen may not look quite as swish as the rest of the interior, it does have the advantage of being a theft- proof TomTom. Auxiliary inputs for mobile music players are positioned at the front of the centre console fore of

The new-look Renault Megane – available in four trim levels, from August the gearlever, and, for an extra £350, an Arkamys 3D sound system with Bluetooth phone connectivity can be fitted.

As such, the Sport Tourer can be decked out with state-of-the-art communications equipment for less than £1,000 – about half the price you’d expect to pay for such onboard kit in other models.

That is a big plus point for the

new Renault, and so is the amount of room inside which makes it very attractive as a mid-sized family estate.

Cargo capacity is 524 litres, extending to a maximum of 1,600 litres, and items up to 2.5 metres long can be carried thanks to a folding front passenger seat.

The luggage blind can also be removed and stowed below the boot

floor when not in use, which is a handy solution.

The Sport Tourer puts the emphasis on being practical and family friendly. It’s also fairly economical to run.

Of the four petrol and five diesel engines which will be available, the most economical is the 86bhp 1.5-litre diesel, priced from £17,185, which can average a claimed

First for

62.8mpg, with CO² emissions of 118g/km, resulting in £35-a-year road tax for private buyers.

The best all-round performance comes from a new two-litre diesel, developing 160bhp, which is available only in the top range Privilege models, costing from £21,785.

This version can average 47.9mpg with emissions of 155g/km (£150 a year tax) and has a top speed in excess of 130mph, with 0 to 60 acceleration of 8.8 seconds.

A 180bhp two-litre turbo petrol is also included in the line-up, priced from £19,585 in mid-range Dynamique trim. That’s said to have a top speed of 139mph, 0 to 60 acceleration of eight seconds, but fuel consumption slips to around 37mpg, with CO² of 178g/km.

On the road, the Sport Tourer exhibits no bad habits and, with the new diesel, there is plenty of mid-range acceleration and easy cruising.

However, pulling away is not as brisk as you would imagine from a 160 horse power diesel.

Overall, of the 21 Sport Tourer versions which will be available later in the year, eight have emissions below 140g/km, making the new model appealing to fleet users as well.

EEPING a step ahead of the game has long been a priority for Citroen. But the French manufacturer has never been afraid to learn from or collaborate with others either.

And it’s a pair of engines that were developed jointly with BMW that are helping breath fresh life into the company’s mid-size C4 range.

The powerplants, 1.6-litre petrol units producing either 120 or 150bhp, are also used in the popular MINI Cooper and Cooper S and join a new 1.6 HDi diesel now available in both the C4 hatchback and coupe.

These two body styles are as different as chalk and cheese, yet individually stylish in their own right.

Much the more quirky, and avant-garde, is the coupe with its swooping profile and angled rear windscreen.

But mindful of the successful image of the latest C5 model, Citroen has given the car a curvier, more rounded bonnet and re-positioned the number plate for a more dynamic look while at the rear there’s now a transparent crystal finish to the lights.

The tested model, in top spec VTS trim, features the 150bhp Turbo High Pressure engine which brings direct petrol injection and turbocharging to the C4 range for the first time.

The result is more torque at low engine speeds, lower fuel

consumption and CO2 emissions plus increased power, all adding up to a coupe with some serious punch.

When it comes to feelgood factor inside the cabin the Citroen has plenty to offer, as well as some bright ideas.

For instance the translucent digital displays are readable in all light conditions, including bright sunshine, thanks to its ability to automatically adjust.

And the steering wheel’s fixed central hub has also enabled Citroen to raise safety levels with the introduction of a driver’s airbag which more closely matches that of the driver’s body.

Mindful of the fact that motorists spend millions each year on dangly air fresheners, the C4 boasts a system of its own.

Overall though the revamped C4 remains a decent, cleverly designed car, the new Airdream + special edition making particular appeal at £13,895 with its plentiful kit, 92bhp HDi engine and 117g/km emissions meaning an annual road tax bill of just £35.

Buyers on alert as Ford announces third price rise this year

THE cost of the UK’s most popular cars is to rise for the third time this year – and more price hikes may be on the way.

Ford, which makes the best-selling Ka, Fiesta, Focus and Mondeo models, says it is being crippled by the weak pound and has no alternative but to

increase prices yet again if its business is to survive.

The company is raising the cost of a new car by 4% following a rise of 4.7% in February and a further increase of 3.5% in April.

This latest increase will add as much as £650 to the price of a Ka, Fiesta, Focus, C-MAX, Kuga

and Mondeo, rising to an extra £700 in the case of the S-MAX and £800 more for a Galaxy.

Ford boss Nigel Sharp says that the weakness of the pound against the Euro means that the cost of making the average £15,000 vehicle has soared by £3,500, which with prices already

at rock-bottom because of intense competition means the prospect of incurring a loss on every car sold.

The only respite for consumers is that dealers will probably have some stocks of unsold cars at pre-increase prices.

Ford’s green revolution T

HE concept of ECOnetic is the new philosophy which has catapulted Ford into the “Green” limelight.

The company has taken a no-compromise approach in its bid to seriously tackle its responsibility towards the Eco agenda.

ECOnetic is about making Ford vehicles the cleanest, leanest petrol and diesel vehicles possible. And, to achieve this goal it has scrutinised, modified and optimised every component and part to effect a reduction in both fuel and CO² emissions.

The full ECOnetic “package” includes optimised engine calibration, low-rolling resistance tyres, changes to transmission ratios, inclusion of an optimum gear change indicator, as well as tweaking air deflectors and honing spoilers to achieve the best aerodynamics.

Even new low-viscosity lubricants and lowered suspension have played a part in Ford’s bid to reduce the impact of its cars on the environment.

But the ECOnetic treatment is not just reserved for the smaller, economic line-up, like the Fiesta.

The Focus and Mondeo models also benefit. The Green Fiesta ECOnetic

PLEASINGLY RETRO: The Fiat 500C harks back to the original 500 of the 1950s

Why Fiat’s new big hit will keep you cool C

ARS as cool as the Fiat 500 convertible don’t come along all that often. The open top version of the popular retro model is on course to become hot property this summer.

On sale from today (July 3) and priced from £11,300 to £14,100, the little 500C is out to cash in on our love affair with cute cabrios.

Since its launch last year the Fiat 500 has become an instant hit to rival the MINI with an accessory list enabling buyers to join in the craze of customising their cars.

The convertible moves its desirability up a notch. Not only does the 500C look great it’s also really fun to drive.

The fabric top is more of a full length sunroof than a foldaway hood, harking back to the original 500 of the 1950s and the legendary

by CHRIS RUSSON Citroen 2CV. Electrically operated it slides back in seconds and can be opened or closed at speeds of up to nearly 40mph.

The roof can be stopped at any position but its two main anchor points leave the cabin completely exposed overhead with the rear window either up or dropped down to leave the back of the car absolutely open.

However, the 500C is not without criticism. There’s a lot of buffeting and noise when fully open and rear vision is compromised by the folded hood and its integral third brake lamp being perched on top of the boot.

Even when only partially retracted there is booming inside at

anything over 45mpg. You could say that’s all part and parcel of open top motoring but rival convertibles such as the MINI, Nissan Micra and VW Beetle have got it right.

Fiat does offer a wind deflector as an option and perhaps it makes all the difference.

With the roof closed the sound insulation is good but you can pick fault in the detail.

The fabric seems slightly too narrow at the windscreen end leaving a tiny, but noticeable, gap either side. Apart from that the roof appears very durable and hard wearing.

Available in red, black or brown (Fiat calls it ivory) the hood incorporates a heated glass rear screen with a high level brake lamp mounted in a colour coded plastic spoiler.

When open, the roof drops across

the top of the boot but to enable access to your luggage it partially retracts as soon as the boot handle is pressed.

Cargo capacity at 182 litres is slightly down on the standard 500 but only by three litres, which is neither here nor there. The only other body change is a deeper windscreen.

The 500C is available in two trim levels, Pop and Lounge, and with the same engine line up as the hatch – 1.2 and 1.4-litre petrols and a 1.3-litre diesel.

All models feature Fiat’s dual setting power steering which lightens up for city driving while electronic stability controls are available on the 1.4 versions.

The higher spec Lounge range – priced from £12,700 – has additional chrome trim, automatic climate control and parking sensors. With

the 1.3 diesel it’s the pick of the bunch.

It can average a claimed 67.3mpg with emissions of just 110g/km, costing only £35 a year to tax.

The 1.2 also falls into the same low tax bracket with emissions of 119g/km but the quicker 1.4-litre has a CO2 rating of 140g/km with 46.3mpg.

As with the standard 500 the convertible has plenty of options available including snazzy body decals and the rag top features some exclusive paint jobs with great names such as Ragamuffin red, Tech House grey and Goth-Metal blue.

That’s a bit of a giveaway about where Fiat is aiming the convertible.

It’s a young, trendy car – and a great fashion statement for the summer.
