SCORES ON THE DOORS: Mazda’s latest incarnation of the RX-8 is more muscular and features a novel door arrangement

MAZDA is about to jack up the zoom zoom factor with a new version of its cool coupé the RX-8.

Five years on from its original launch the four-door, four-seater sports car is still the world’s only rotary-engined production model.

And while that powerplant remains pretty much unchanged, the car itself now looks even more muscular and, significantly, is better value.

Officially named the R3 – which represents Rotary Three – the new RX-8 goes on sale later this month with a price tag of £24,995, almost

Mazda’s latest RX–8 two grand more than the current model.

That said, the R3 is so highly specced up that no factory fitted options are available. In other words everything, and that includes a new Sports Styling pack, is included in the price.

Thanks to the sports pack the Mazda now has a stiffer bodyshell, uprated suspension, lower gearing and improved dynamics, all topped off by body-hugging

Recaro sports seats. There’s also a prominent rear spoiler, large five-point grille, stand-out side skirts and 19-inch alloy wheels.

Powered by an improved version of the 1.3-litre 231PS twin-rotor engine, the RX-8 is a more enjoyable car to drive than its predecessor.

Gone is the sports spin dryer sound of the original to be replaced by a nice growling engine note to match a styling

that Mazda’s UK marketing chief Mark Cameron describes as “giving the coupe the appearance of a Japanese racing car”.

Also consigned to the past is the “low power” 192PS version of the car.

The test drive conditions for the Mazda couldn’t have been much worse as a storm shifted menacingly across the Yorkshire moors, yet the RX-8 still proved a treat to drive with bags of power, easy-shift six-speed manual

Big Cats still up to speed

By MIKE TORPEY AUSTRALIAN Neville Martin stepped out of his gleaming Jaguar XK 120, gazed back at the convoy of classic cars behind him and remarked: “This is the trip of a lifetime.”

Martin, a 58-year-old from Perth, is in the UK with wife Diane to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the iconic XK engine.

Over the past three weeks, the pair have driven 1,200 miles of spectacular and largely unspoiled British countryside as part of the XK 60 Diamond Tour, put on by Jaguar XK Club founder Phil Porter.

The tour is a celebration of all things XK and, appropriately, comprises 60 cars driven by members from 15 countries and ranging from the earliest XK 120 models, through XK 140 and 150 up to the latest XK8 models.

It all started at Oulton Hall near Leeds and via scenic routes through the Yorkshire dales, Peak District, the Cotswolds and Welsh marches, the entourage arrived on the south coast last weekend for the tour’s highlight at the time-warp Goodwood Circuit.

Here, an incredible collection of classics, like C, D and E-Types plus Lister Jaguars and 600 XKs – worth in excess of £150m – were on parade, many performing laps of the racetrack and watched by motorsport luminaries such as Sir Stirling Moss.

Porter, himself the proud owner of a white 1950 XK 120 roadster, explained the event’s

“Jaguar didn’t expect the sensational reaction that followed and the engine went on to power not only cars but also boats and military vehicles and wasn’t superseded until 1986. It is practical, usable and has acceptable

performance, even by modern standards. It even looks stylish, and is arguably the greatest engine of all time.

“The XK120 name referred to the car’s impressive 120mph top speed and at the time of its launch it was the fastest standard production car in the world.”

Of the 12,000 XK 120s built in the six years up

to 1954, when the model was replaced by the XK 140, many are still run regularly by their owners worldwide.

Neville Martin owns the fourth car to leave the factory, a shining aluminium model that he admits to buying for 450 Australian pounds in 1962. This has been a fantastic car for us as a family,” he says. “It isn’t just locked away in a garage. We have used it for collecting kids from school and picking up shopping; all sorts of things,” he says.

So keen were the Martins to join the Diamond tour that along with nine other couples from various parts of Australia, and the same number from the USA, they had the car packed up in a container and shipped over – at considerable expense.

I joined the tour in an XK8 for two days of the Cotswold section and was able to appreciate the devotion and respect these enthusiasts have for their cars, their history and each other too.

The tour was able to visit Wappenbury Hall, the home of Jaguar’s late founder Sir William Lyons and at a separate country house view memorabilia owned by the family of his engineering director, Bill Heynes.

And a trip to Jaguar’s Castle Bromwich HQ provided a glimpse of the future as XK chief designer Giles Taylor revealed that although the next model is fully five years away, the first drawings have already been laid down.

The XK experience has proved a successful and high speed ride for the Big Cat – it shows no sign of slowing down.

Mazda updates its rotary-engine sports coupé

gearshift, comfortable ride, positive well weighted steering and fantastic grip.

A freestyle door system with its pillarless structure makes the car look as though it only has two doors, coupé-style.

In fact you can’t actually open the rear-hinged back doors without the front ones already being open. It’s clever, allows easy access and is safer too.

The only problem comes once you're inside, because while space is more than adequate for those up front, things are claustrophobic in the back.

For the driver though, the cockpit is very desirable with features like a tachometer that now has a variable red zone that rises as the engine comes to operating temperature, an instrument cluster with a newly developed colour to help minimise eye strain, and a new style steering wheel.

Less useful is the digital speedo, the

readout of which is tiny.

Every R3 now comes with a dozen new items such as cruise control, auto light-sensing Xenon headlamps, rain sensing wipers, integrated Bluetooth system and badged carpet mats, while there’s also a new Bose audio system with surround sound, six-CD autochanger and nine speakers.

With a fiver change from £25,000, the new RX-8 clearly represents decent value for money in a car that can reach 62mph in in a fleeting 6.4 seconds.

And as Mazda is quick to point out, the previous model RX-8 of equivalent power, with leather trim and metallic paint would actually have cost more than the new R3.
