HE Nissan Qashqai is one of Britain’s great automotive success stories – and it’s about to get bigger.
The British-built crossover model – which combines hatchback convenience with SUV practicality – has sold like hot cakes since its launch in March 2007. In those 18 months more than 250,000 Qashqais have been built, earning millions of pounds for the British economy. Now there’s a new seven-seat version, the Qashqai+2 which is bigger all round than the standard model and provides additional flexibility akin to that of the Vauxhall Zafira or Ford’s award-winning S-Max. Priced from £17,199 to £23,799 the Qashqai+2 is very much at the top end of the scale in the model range – and not the cheapest on the market. Its advantage is four-wheel drive which is available throughout the three model range badged Visia, Acenta and Tekna. As with the standard five seater, front wheel drive versions are also on sale and are the cheaper option. Initially only two engines will be available, both 2.0-litre and either petrol or diesel. Smaller 1.6-litre petrol and 1.5 diesels will come on stream in January next year. The 2.0-litre diesel packs 148bhp and is available either with a six-speed manual or auto box. The 138bhp petrol version is manual or CVT. In terms of performance the petrol option is the better bet. It’s livelier to drive and will

almost match the diesel automatic in terms of economy at around low to mid-30s mpg. The manual diesel will eke around 40mpg with emissions of 188g/km, but the others all hover around the 200g/km mark – which means high tax. At a glance the bigger Qashqai+2 looks little different to the mainstream model but it’s stretched by some eight inches. That translates to more room inside although the rear seats are strictly for youngsters. For occasional use the additional seats are fine and when folded flat – which takes only seconds – the Qashqai+2 is incredibly user-friendly with 550 litres of luggage space, 140 more than the five seat version. Despite the Qashqai+2’s larger dimensions it still handles neatly and while the four wheel drive may have only limited use, such models are expected to account for 25% of the 9,000 Qashqai+2 models Nissan expects to sell in the UK each year. Hands-free Bluetooth phone connections are standard across the range, so is a huge panoramic roof with electric blind and darkened privacy glass in the rear. Nissan has set out its stall to be the world’s crossover brand, producing cars which can accommodate all a family will demand. The soaraway success of the five-seat Qashqai proves the point – the flexibility of the seven-seater adds a new dimension.

Spec Check JAZZED UP: The Chevrolet Matiz is a decent buy on the used market

F there was a car from the doomed Daewoo range that stood out as having a measure of genuine charm and character it was the Matiz.
Now carrying the Chevrolet badge – in fact it was Chevy’s first all-new car in the UK – revamped versions of the city runabout arrived in 2005 and have a fresher, more modern look than the original. The car's cheeky appeal remains but, if anything, the practicality that made Matiz such a hit with small car buyers has been improved. Its four wide opening doors and low sills mean easy access, and once inside there’s decent room for four adults – or three children across the

Best, though, are the seat patterns and door inserts that see the dark fabrics jazzed up with white circles, squares and half-moon shapes. The downside is minimal rear storage – one centrally placed cupholder behind the handbrake, small pockets in each door and a map flap on the back of the front passenger seat. Upfront, things are a little better with door bins, glovebox and a central tub along with a pair of trays below the dash. There's power steering for
those tight parking moments and sharp turns, and remote controlled central door locking for when you have armfuls of shopping. The 60/40 split folding rear seat has a cushion which folds up for maximised capacity, while the small boot is also bigger. Move up to the higher spec SE the likes of electric front windows, internally adjustable door mirrors and two additional speakers in the rear enter the equation while top grade SX brings in side airbags, air-con and powered body coloured door mirrors. Expect to pay around £3,450 for a 2006-06 registered Matix 0.8 S model or £4,250 for the same model year 1.0 SX.
