VAUXHALL has a new limited edition ‘Black’ Corsa adding a new engine to the range, a 1.4 Turbo Start/Stop unit, making it one of the most powerful Corsas on sale.

The new engine produces 120PS for a top speed of 121mph and hits 0-60mph in 9.7 seconds. Fuel consumption is 51.4mpg and CO2 emissions are as low as 129g/km.

Initially available in a limited production run of 500 cars, in both three and five-door body styles, the Black is based on the Corsa Limited Edition and gains a black logo bar and new 17-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels.

Sporty styling features include body-coloured front lower spoiler, side sills, rear lower skirt and rear spoiler, along with front fog lights, dark style headlights and dark tinted rear windows.

A POP-UP ● zebra crossing that can

be installed on any road in less than a minute has been launched to help the thousands of children who struggle each day to cross busy streets outside their schools.

The idea was developed by parents in Kingston upon Thames after their request for a safe crossing outside their children's school was turned down due to cost.

According to the Highways Agency, a basic zebra crossing costs £114,000.

The pop-up version costs less than £50 to install and uses uses recycled linoleum, drain pipes and two orange balloons to create an effect almost the same as the real thing.

Now the French company is launching its new 208, the latest in a ‘2’ series dynasty that has built on founder Robert Peugeot’s original 1929 plan “to create the most economical car in the world that could transport four people in comfort”.

The link with the 205 is one of regeneration. This car proved a game-changer for Peugeot, lifting accolades like Car of the Decade, and the powers that be are getting the same vibes from their newcomer.

In fact Peugeot has taken more than 3,000 customer orders for the 208 – and none of them have even driven the car.

It’s unlikely any will be disappointed, because this new kid on the block looks cool, feels classy and is smaller on the outside but bigger on the inner. Pretty much a winning combo.

by MIKE TORPEY On sale this week, the 208 comes in both three and five-door body styles plus a choice of frugal petrol and diesel engines and five trim grades.

There’s also a fresh take on equipment and technology, the sensibly-designed and comfortable cabin featuring – on 80 per cent of the models anyway – a seven-inch colour touch screen allowing easy access to the likes of radio, Bluetooth and music files.

And later in the year ten Peugeot Connect Apps, aimed at making the user’s everyday life easier, will be introduced and progressively updated.

While there are engines and spec to suit most pockets the stars of the show are likely to be the new three cylinder 1.0 and 1.2-litre petrol units.

Both have low CO2 emissions, the 68bhp 1.0 three pot producing a tax-free 99g/km and the 82bhp 1.2 unit rated at 104g/km.

While the 1.0 VTi three-door

kicks off the line-up in entry grade Access trim at £9,995, the 1.2 – available in mid-range Access+, Active and Allure – is sure to prove very popular with its pricing from £11,345 to £13,895.

Premium for five-door is £600, and even though the three-door models look slicker, the extra practicality and ease of access of the five-door 208 is well worth the extra.

The 1.2 is a terrific little car to drive, highlighting Peugeot’s time-honoured

handling qualities as we picked out a 75-mile mixed route from Salford’s MediaCity into the Cheshire countryside.

In spite of an official acceleration figure of 0-62 in 12.2 seconds, the supermini felt well balanced and lively, an experience made all the more enjoyable thanks to the 208’s retro-style small steering wheel – you look over it rather than through it. Only criticism would be a noticeably firm feel from the

suspension.

Interior space – appreciably better than the 207 model – is adequate in a cabin that feels upmarket and is thoughtfully laid out with dials positioned high on the dashboard.

Four adults can certainly travel in comfort provided there aren’t six-footers sitting behind each other, in which case knee room is tight, and the 285-litre boot is adequate for a car this size.

As well as the three-cylinder duo there are also 95bhp 1.4 and lively 120 and 156bhp 1.6-litre petrol engines on offer along with a five-strong diesel range of the same capacity but with outputs of 68, 92 and 115bhp.

Most frugal is the 1.4 HDi oil-burner with Stop & Start, boasting 87g/km of emissions and an outstanding 83.1mpg fuel consumption. It starts at £13,345 for a three-door Access+ model.

It looks like Peugeot is onto a winner with the 208. It’s classy, fashionable and a genuine rival to the Ford Fiesta and Vauxhall Corsa.

Chrysler Ypsilon 0.9 TwinAir Limited

Little Italy ITALIAN AMERICAN: The new Chrysler Ypsilon is capable of holding its own in the hottest company

T

HRUST a new model into the most fiercely contested new car arena in Europe and it quickly becomes a case of sink or swim.

Even superminis from the established big players aren’t guaranteed success in the current climate, so when a brand like Chrysler launches a car with a daft name like Ypsilon you can guess which way the odds are stacked.

But things aren’t always quite how they seem and the ailing American giant of not so long ago is now controlled by that Italian master of producing small cars, Fiat.

And in little big car the Ypsilon, which actually sports a Lancia (remember them) badge outside Britain, it has a model capable of holding its own in the hottest company.

grille , 18-spoke alloy wheels and concealed rear door handles – the Ypsilon is certainly an eyecatcher.

Despite being smaller than many supermini rivals it boasts an excellent amount of interior space with enough room for four adults and a child plus lots of headroom and an adequate boot.

There’s plenty of feelgood factor too, the tested version coming with part fabric, part leather upholstery while the dash has a piano black surround. You can definitely feel the quality.

Of the three engine options –

Fiat’s 1.2-litre Fire and 0.9 TwinAir petrol plus a 1.3 MultiJet diesel – the 875cc two cylinder unit is a cracker.

This powerplant took the international engine of the year title in 2011 and once you’ve got over the initial shock of it sounding more like a lawnmower when you fire up the ignition it’s plain sailing from there on in.

The amount of punch, and rorty sound when revved, is terrific for such a small unit and while predominantly urban driving won’t equal the official average fuel figure of 67 miles per gallon I still managed to comfortably top the 50mpg mark.

Prod the ECO button on the dash and torque is automatically limited for better economy still as well as lower emissions, something also aided by the Start&Stop system.

Overall, this is a really enjoyable, positive car to drive and a safe one

New books highlight US automotive art FANS of American cars have a treat in store with two new books that are in the shops now.

Corvette Sixty Years, by Randy Leffingwell (Motorbooks International, £35) celebrates 60 years of America’s only true sports car, the Chevrolet Corvette.

It’s a labour lof love, packed with hundreds of rarely-seen photos and text that is full of both detail

and interesting anecdote.

Created in co-operation with General Motors, which partly explains why the pictures are so good, the book focuses as much on the Corvette’s place in popular culture as it does on the engineering and design history. If you’re in any way a fan of the Vette, you mustn’t miss this book.

The stories behind these incredible machines are fascinating, but it’s the gorgeous photography by Peter Harholdt that makes this book worth your cash.
