omebody at Hyundai is F} Edward Stephens working hard to cash in on the rush to buy a car with a new registration drivers looking for a larger car. It’s plate.

The plates last changed on March 1 and that was the date chosen by Hyundai to launch its new city car, the i10.

The 1.1-litre is already a sell out success so Hyundai has chosen the September 1 registration plate change date to launch a beefier version of the little car.

The newcomer will have a 1.2litre engine, making it a more gutsy proposition but without any penalty in fuel consumption.

In fact, the CO2 emissions and combined fuel consumption are identical to the smaller 1.1-litre engine at 119g/km and 56.5mpg.

And whichever engine you opt for, you will still only pay £35 road tax.

The efficiency of the new allalloy unit means that power output has been improved by 18% to 77PS and torque rises from 98Nm to 118Nm – a massive 20% increase compared with the 1.1litre. There is also significantly improved in-gear driving flexibility and more relaxed cruising.

As a result, the top speed rises from 94 to 102mph and the benchmark 0-62mph sprint drops by nearly three seconds to 12.8 seconds.

At the same time as the new engine, the range-topping Style model also gets leather trim for its steering wheel, gear lever skirt and handbrake to give a more upmarket feel to the interior.

Another benefit is the availability of an Electronic Stability Programme as an option for the first time on the i10.

On the road prices for the 1.1 start at £6,745 and for the 1.2 at £7,545.

The i10 was launched hard on the heels of the i30, which is proving to be another major success story for the Korean car maker.

The Ford Focus-sized i30 is for

a trendy looking hatchback with a stylish modern interior and a build quality to match its looks.

The 2.0-litre diesel engine is one of the quietest around and, matched to a six-speed gearbox, offers punchy performance linked to sensible economy.

It’s the car that has the overall feel that says that Hyundai has arrived.

Prices for the i30 start from £10,980.

One of the latest additions to the Hyundai range is for motorists who demand a real abundance of space, the i800 MPV. Unlike most MPVs, which only have room for seven people, the i800 can comfortably accommodate eight and still have room for all their luggage.

In fact, the i800 has 851 litres of space in the boot, even when loaded with passengers; that’s twice as much as some estate cars.

Powered by a 2.5-litre diesel engine, it features a pair of seats in front and two benches behind – each accommodating three adults in comfort – with uncompromised head and leg room. And best of all, it costs less than £20,000.

At the lower end of the market there is the Amica from £5,852 and the Getz from £7,430.

Then there is stylish motoring with the trendy two-seater Hyundai Coupé with a choice of 1.6litre, 1.7-litre or the range topping 2.7 V6.

At present there is also a limited edition Coupe, called the TSIII, which has an even more sporty image, thanks to features like a sportier engine note, a larger boot spoiler with integral brake light and 17ins alloy wheels.

For four-wheel-drive enthusiasts there is the Santa Fe, while the Tucson comes with a choice of either front-wheel-drive or fourwheel-drive.

Ford switches focus to high tech F

ord is going from strength to strength with its revised model range, which includes the new Focus, Mondeo and Kuga, plus the all-new Fiesta and Ka models promising to attract even more buyers.

The revised Focus, which went on sale earlier this year brimming with

the latest technological innovations is aiming to maintain its position as the nation’s favourite car.

With prices from £12,200, it is just £250 more than its predecessor. This represents enhanced value given the array of new technology and equipment including ESP, which was previously a £250 option and is now fitted as standard.

The restructured range offers a choice of Studio, Style, Zetec, Titanium and ST trim matched to a comprehensive line-up of advanced petrol and diesel engines. Transmissions include five and six speed manual gearboxes, a conventional automatic and the allnew dual-clutch PowerShift automated gearbox.

In addition to ESP, every Focus is equipped with ABS, four airbags, elec-

tric front windows, CD player, central locking, height adjustable driver’s seat, 60/40 split folding rear seat, curtain airbags and Easyfuel capless refuelling system.

Style, costing from £13,700 adds body-coloured door handles and mirrors, bigger wheels, front fog lamps, air conditioning, remote audio controls, trip computer, leather covered steering wheel and remote central locking.

The best-selling Zetec costs from £15,550 and adds 16-in alloy wheels, dark headlamp surrounds, sports suspension, sports seats, Quickclear heated front windscreen, perimeter alarm, driver’s seat lumbar adjustment, rear spoiler and upgraded centre console. A body-coloured rear spoiler, previously an option, is also included as standard.

Focus Titanium, the luxury flagship, costs from £15,700. Equipment highlights are privacy glass, automatic headlights, rain-sensing wipers, autodimming rear view mirror, Sony CD sound system, electric rear windows, cooled glovebox, aluminium scuff plates and footwell lighting.

Ford is confident that the new

Mondeo will top the incredible four million sales of the previous car.

The newcomer arrived here last June and was immediately one of last September and March’s biggest sellers.

Available in a choice of hatchback, saloon and estate body styles, it comes with a wide range of petrol and diesel engines including a new 2.3-litre petrol unit.

The new models are built to a higher standard in every respect than the previous car, which attracted more than one and a half million UK buyers, out of the four million sold worldwide since 1993.

The quality feel is most evident inside the car with the use of piano black accents, soft-touch materials and much use of ambient lighting.

Standard equipment includes air conditioning, MP3 connectors and several advanced-technology features such as adaptive cruise control.

For each body style there are four trim and equipment levels on offer starting with the Edge.

Then there is the Zetec series and at the top of the range the Ghia and

Mechanically there is a wider track and revisions to the suspension, steering and soundproofing, with the new models significantly quieter than the previous crop Engine choices include diesel units of 1.8 litres, 2.0-litres and 2.2-litres with a choice of power outputs plus petrol engines of 1.6, 2.0, 2.3 and 2.5-litres.

The 2.3-litre engine produces 160bhp and is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission, while the 2.5litre unit is a five-cylinder engine generating 220bhp and is mated to a sixspeed manual gearbox.

Prices range from £15,205 for the 1.6-litre Edge to £25,355 for the 2.2litre turbodiesel.

Also included in Ford’s impressive line-up are the Ka city car, Fiesta

supermini, Focus compact, C-Max and S-Max midi-MPVs and Galaxy people-carrier, plus the highly impressive Kuga crossover vehicle.

This is ideally positioned to benefit from the downsizing of large 4x4 owners to smaller models with similar attributes.

Kuga prices are £20,500 for the 2.0 TDCi Zetec and £22,500 for the Titanium model.

Citroën offers a great choice

itroën is playing the numbers game and while it may not make its range sound very romantic, it certainly is comprehensive.

Admittedly, the range includes the C-Crosser and Berlingo but the rest of models are designated C1, C2, C3, C4, C5, C6 and C8.

Unsurprisingly, this indicates their size, starting with the C1 and C2 city cars through the C3 supermini and C4 compact to the C4 midi people-carrier and C5 family model before arriving at the flagship C6 executive saloon and the C8 people-carrier.

The C1 hatchback is ideally placed to take advantage of the current craze for down-sizing into smaller, more economical cars.

Engine choices are a frugal one-litre petrol unit with economy of 60mpg and a 1.4-litre diesel offering almost 70mpg. Prices range from £7,295 to £9,125.

The C2 range also includes this diesel engine plus a 1.6-litre diesel and three petrol units of 1.1, 1.4 and 1.6 litres. Prices range from £8,795 to £13,895.

Next up is the C3 range, which offers the same engine choice and prices from £9,695 for the 1.1-litre five-door Vibe to £12,695 for the 1.6 HDi Exclusive.

The C4 model comes with a choice of hatchback, coupé, Picasso and Grand Picasso body styles.

There are petrol and diesel engine options and prices ranging from £12,325 for the 1.4litre petrol-powered five-door hatchback to £22,430 for the seven-seat Grand Picasso with a two-litre 140bhp diesel engine.

Citroën is determined to break into the highly-profitable premium sector and has the C5 and C6 models to do the job.

The C5 achieves new standards of build quality and comes lavishly equipped with prices from £15,595 for the entry-level 1.8litre petrol version to £24,395 for the 140mph 2.7-litre turbodiesel.

The C6 range starts with the 2.2 HDi at £28,430 rising to £38,325 for the 2.7-litre V6 HDi Exclusive.

Also included in Citroën’s expansive line-up are the Xsara Picasso, which is currently attracting huge discounts plus the C8 people carrier and the C-Crosser 4x4.

The C-Crosser, which is based on the Mitsubishi Outlander, costs from £22,995 and rises to £25,695 for the lavishly-equipped 2.2 HDi Exclusive version.
