ENCOURAGED, SUPPORTED AND CHALLENGED.
It was a large congregation which gathered in the Cathedral almost five years ago on 15th September 2012 to welcome and install the Seventh Dean of Liverpool. The Cathedral Company was looking forward to a feast of good things. During the process of making Dean Pete’s appointment, we had a ‘wish list’ to guide us to discern the right person. We asked for someone who would consolidate and embed the ‘Development Plan’, a major part of Dean Justin’s legacy to us. Dean Pete used this as the basis of Chapter’s Strategic Plan, with its two overarching goals of doubling the 4
congregation and raising 24 million pounds, supported by four pillars and six mission activities. Dean Pete leaves us in good heart with both goals launched and huge progress already achieved. We asked for someone who would build on the creative evangelistic ministry of the Cathedral and its ministry of social justice. Under Dean Pete’s leadership we have seen the establishment of the Joshua Centre, St Mellitus North West, a tempting array of courses led by the Canon for Discipleship, the Hope Plus foodbank, Sepas and Volition, showing the Cathedral’s firm commitment to making disciples, growing congregations and promoting social justice – all risky things
in Christ’s service, and all a lasting legacy of Dean Pete’s time with us upon which we know we shall continue to build. We asked for someone who would extend the role of the Cathedral as a place of theological exploration and of public theology and debate. Dean Pete has been a tireless and enthusiastic biblical teacher, always giving of himself to make the gospel known, in the Cathedral and way beyond it, through teaching, preaching and exploring with groups of people hungry and thirsty to know more of God’s love for us in Christ. That covers just three bullet points from our shopping list for a Dean last time. There are several more…! Dean Pete has worked closely with his clergy colleagues. We have found ourselves encouraged, supported and challenged too, and he has enabled us to be a team who thoroughly enjoy working together,
with our very different gifts and perspectives. The Cathedral Chapter has been a happy and thoroughly motivated environment in which all have been able to flourish. In speaking to many different gatherings as he has prepared to bid us farewell, Dean Pete has often mentioned in recent weeks that the past five years have been both fun and fulfilling. His colleagues feel exactly the same. As he and Cathy begin their new life in Sheffield and as he responds wholeheartedly to the call of God to be a Bishop in the Church of God, the Cathedral Company join in thankful remembrance of his ministry as the Seventh Dean of Liverpool: ‘for what we have received, may the Lord make us truly thankful.’

THESE LAST FIVE YEARS HAVE BEEN THE MOST FRUITFUL AND FUN
Dean Pete reflects on his time in Liverpool as he moves to become Bishop of Sheffield. “I feel honoured to be offered the opportunity of being the eighth Bishop of Sheffield. My wife Cathy and I shall find it a great wrench to uproot from a city and Diocese we have come to know and love. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for all your good wishes and all the more for the assurance of your prayers.” We asked Dean Pete about the changes and achievements that he has seen in the cathedral over his time as Dean: “The first is the bold vision of raising £24m by 2024. It is both a practical challenge and sensible proposition. We have made wonderful progress and have raised seven million in less than three years. Congregational growth has increased from a weekly average aggregate attendance of 438 in 2013 to 702 in 2016. This is a
magnificent outcome and gives great confidence for future growth and development. Five years ago it was not possible to train as clergy in the North West. The vision and development of St Mellitus and the St Aidan’s project has allowed that to come to fruition. Through the work of Hope Plus foodbank and our Volition employability project we have developed a programme of support for those in need. Our foodbank continues to offer emergency support to many thousands, particularly as Liverpool acts as a centre for the dispersal of displaced people, including refugees and asylum seekers. Volition goes from success to success in delivering quality volunteer placement opportunities and interview experience for the long term unemployed, to assist them in finding paid work. Twice in the last five years we have won the Large Visitor Attraction of the Year at the Merseyside Tourism Awards. On TripAdvisor we are rated as the number one tourist attraction in Liverpool. Now,
this is extraordinary in a city that has so much to offer tourists and a mark of what we have achieved. All of these achievements have only been possible due to my first class colleagues. This extraordinary concentration of gifted and committed people - paid staff and volunteers, lay and ordained. To be the seventh Dean of Liverpool has been one of the great privileges of my life. The past four and a half years have been the most fruitful and the most fun that I have known in 30 years of ordained ministry. If I am granted nearly as much fruitfulness and fun as the eighth Bishop of Sheffield, I shall be blessed indeed. My wife Cathy and I owe a huge debt of thanks. We have loved our time in Liverpool. It has been a huge privilege to have worked here. We wish to say ‘thank you’ for what will always stand out as a golden period of our lives.”

On July 19th 2024, Liverpool Cathedral will celebrate the centenary of its consecration. By that date, we aim to restore and develop the Cathedral, in terms of outreach, financial health and core fabric, so it is fit and ready to serve the people of Liverpool for the next century as a vibrant place of worship and community. It is an astonishing place “one of the great buildings of the world” according to Sir John Betjeman. It is the largest Cathedral in the UK and the longest in this country. In fact, if you laid the Statue of Liberty and Big Ben down on their sides end to end, the Cathedral would outstretch them - just. Having stood above the Mersey for the past century, exposed to the wind, rain
and sea air, the building is showing signs of needing urgent, major repair work. Given the building’s magnitude and spectacular craftsmanship, carrying out these repairs is extremely expensive. Unlike other great heritage buildings in the UK, cathedrals do not benefit from any state funding and we are entirely self-financed. In Liverpool’s case, there are no historic reserves so we need to raise the money ourselves. We have been asking for your help to raise £24 million by 2024 to address this need, and to develop our outreach projects. Your response has been humbling. To date, over £7 million has been secured for the Cathedral’s future. This is simply overwhelming, thank you so much to everyone for this extraordinary generosity.

Secured £100k funding from Allchurches Trust Earlier this year, we were successful in securing £100K funding from Allchurches Trust, making them one of the most significant supporters of our £24m by 2024 Campaign. This grant will largely be put towards necessary repair to the Cathedral and Allchurches Trust’s Peter Mojsa, who recently toured Liverpool Cathedral was able to see how this funding would make such a difference to our Cathedral, said: “Liverpool Cathedral’s “£24m for 2024” centenary appeal is the largest project in which we’ve ever played a part and our grant of £100,000 is one of the largest single grants we’ve ever given. We’ve given grants to the Cathedral totalling £100,000 over the past four years for a range of other projects and now we’re delighted to be contributing to this major new campaign.” Julia Bates, Director of Fundraising at Liverpool Cathedral, commented: “It was a hugely generous grant we received from Allchurches Trust. When
we took a tour with Peter round the building, we were able to show him the key areas suffering from the weather damage in need of urgent fabric repair. This Allchurches Trust funding will be an enormous help.” Some of the repair work has already started and you may see evidence of the repair work we need to do. For instance, scaffolding towers so any maintenance or investigative work can be carried out safely. And to protect our marble flooring, special matting is in place to prevent any debris damaging the floor. Please accept our apologies if we’re not looking our best while we’re investing in our Cathedral. Acting Dean, Rev Canon Myles Davies said: “The generous donations we receive, along with income from our shop, our restaurants and money from services and events, allow us to carry out maintenance and repair work to our Cathedral, ensuring our majestic building is fit for generations to come. Thank you for your continued support.”

OVER 3000 CHILDREN TAKE PART IN SCHOOL LEAVERS' SERVICES Liverpool Cathedral was a sea of colour as 95 schools and 3088 Year 6 pupils from across the Diocese of Liverpool attended School Leavers' Services over four days in June. A procession of colourful banners held proudly by the children made its way from the Well of the Cathedral through the Central Space before each service was held to mark pupils’ transition from primary to secondary school. During the energetic and entertaining ceremonies, workers from local charity Y Kids led the children in song and dance before a representative from each school brought forward a prayer to hang on the prayer tree and their gift of thanksgiving. The children have been raising funds for Water Aid this year and so far they have raised a superb £4,652 with more still to come in. Over 500 pupils took part in transition workshops prior to the services run by Liverpool Cathedral’s Education Department,
Scripture Union, Youth for Christ and Y Kids. Using drama, music and reflection as the main focus the workshops provided pupils with a toolkit for their transition to secondary school focusing on friendship, supporting the theme of ‘Moving on’. Fr Richard Peers said “These are my first school services since being appointed Director of Education - and what tremendous occasions they are for all involved! These services give us the collective opportunity to celebrate in worship and give prayerful thanks for the children as their time at primary school ends, and they prepare for moving on to secondary school. AMAZING ATTENDANCE AT THIS YEAR’S CHOIR OPEN EVENING This year's choir open evening on Monday 3rd July saw unprecedented interest, when 78 children auditioned in their bid to become choristers in Liverpool Cathedral’s choirs. The successful candidates will be starting this September. Stephen Mannings, Liverpool Cathedral’s Assistant Choral Director said he was overwhelmed by the response and thanked everyone involved for making it a success. He added: “Each year we recruit ten new boys and girls to our choirs. Those children who are selected can look forward to a rich variety of vocal training, instrumental tuition, television and radio broadcasts and international
choir tours. Embracing Hope is open to all whose lives have been affected by the serious illness or loss of a child.
