Key to the shows

Welcome to the Summer Guide for 2010, featuring a mix of some of the biggest West End shows, stunning world class opera, breathtaking classic musicals, top class local writing and, of course, the North West’s best selling pantomime! For June we have Strictly Come Dancing, The Professionals and the biggest star of all, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. In August, 150 young people join Stage Experience in a full scale production of Fame, the premier of Spamalot, and Michael Starke and Les Dennis in Hairspray. From September we see a host of debuts, Nicky Allt’s new show, Brick Up – The Wirral Strikes Back, the global phenomenon, Calendar Girls and Connie Fisher in The Sound of Music whilst November is about welcome returns with the infamous Mrs Brown and Willy Russell’s Blood Brothers, starring Mel C. And for December, the biggest panto in the Northwest – Aladdin.

The Credit Crunch and the recession have taken their toll on Wirral entrepreneur, William (Cammel) Laird. With his city-gent lifestyle and high maintenance family he struggles to raise finance for new projects. Education & Community Department Our aim To develop a programme of activities, events and projects based on and inspired by the programme of shows. We involve participants of all ages and backgrounds in practical activity alongside the experience of live performance at the Empire. Backstage Tours Available Tuesday to Friday, the tour lasts 1.5 hours and will give you an insight into the theatre’s exciting history and how the Empire works. You can also find out about careers within the performing arts. £4.50 per participant. Please book at least 1 month in advance. Diplomas We have been involved in the creation and delivery of a number of modules for the Creative and Media Diploma, supporting Level 2, Performance and Artefact and Level 3 Commission. Performing Arts Club Become a member of our weekly performing arts clubs giving you the opportunity to work with industry professionals to develop skills in musical theatre, meet like minded people and perform! Some are free and others have a small membership fee which is payable at the start of each new term. Available for all ages, for the past two years we have been working in partnership with Liverpool Mutual Housing to provide a provision for over 50’s, activities involve:

Workshops We offer workshops led by experienced performing arts practitioners that last 1½ – 2 hours either at the theatre or at your school/meeting place. Here is a guide to some examples of workshop we can provide. They can be adapted to meet your needs and are available to groups including schools, youth groups, brownies, guides, adults and community groups.

Blood Brothers For English Literature and Drama Students and can be tailor made to suit your needs. Based around themes of the play or leading characters. Also offers insight into acting and directing and involves improvisation, text and dramatic techniques. The Hobbit We can offer activities throughout the summer term based around the Hobbit, be it a 2 hour workshop or a week long residency linked to the show, creating characters and stories using drama and movement techniques. Hairspray 16 – 20 August is Hairspray week for ages 11 – 18. Workshop activities will include practical dance and drama based around Hairspray with a trip to the show and a glimpse behind the scenes. £55.00 Places are limited and must be booked by 1 August 2010. Sound of Music Bespoke workshops are available to help your group gain a greater understanding of the show. For example a backstage tour and history of musical theatre workshop for community groups including refreshments and tickets. Suitable for all ages.

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang Two very special workshops for families and individuals led by members of the Chitty Chitty Bang Bang cast! Saturday 5 July, 11:30am Meet Grandpa Potts. Listen to stories about his son Caractacus and his children in this fun and interactive workshop for up to10’s. Tuesday 13 July, 5.00pm Me Ol Bamboo (and other junk). Learn some of the famous choreography from the show and use your voice and body to create some amazing percussion sounds. For ages 11 – 16 Cost: £6 per participant. Places strictly limited .
