Based on L’Hôtel du Libre Échange by Georges Feydeau

By Stephen Sharkey

A Liverpool Everyman & Playhouse production Directed by Serdar Billis

#Sex3Week @LivEveryPlay

Britain in the 1970s: a time of strikes, blackouts, and free love. But Philip’s frustrated. While his wife Angela thinks he’s past it, he wants to share a whole lotta love with Catherine from next door. When the naughty neighbours check in at the Paradise Hotel, it’s a night to remember - for all the wrong reasons. The lights go out, the corridors see more action than the beds, and to cap it all, the place could be haunted...

Throw in Fanny the French maid, Detective Inspector Connors of the Vice Squad, a snake called Cecil and Tom the mynah bird, and it all makes for a chaotic cocktail of confusion leaving the would-be lovebirds not even halfway to Paradise. A tale of midlife crises, mistaken identities and misfiring sexual shenanigans, this new farce from Liverpool writer Stephen Sharkey (The May Queen) is a delirious delight.

Anything is Possible Brave and brilliant theatre has and always will be at the heart of the Everyman & Playhouse. Artistic Directors, writers, actors, creative teams and audiences have created worlds of imagination where anything is possible. They have dared to dream. This season, as the Everyman turns fifty we fan the fires of creative possibility and dare to dream for the future, with an exhibition, a new Liverpool play from Jeff Young, a ‘cosmic’ happening, Everyword and a pop up Fun Palace.

Fabulous Fifty

When three young men set about turning an old chapel into a theatre back in 1964, little did they believe it would last a year never mind fifty. Charting five decades on the corner of Hope Street, our friends at Liverpool John Moores University dig into the theatre’s archive for a free exhibition celebrating a theatre that changed the theatrical landscape. (The dates coincide with the start of rehearsals for the first production and its opening night.) 24 August to 28 September Everyman theatre bar

16

Fun Palaces

Someone else challenging what theatre could be was Joan Littlewood, the creator of Theatre Workshop and Artistic Director of Theatre Royal Stratford East back in the 1960s. Together with architect Cedric Price they conceived the Fun Palace ‘a laboratory of fun’, ‘a university of the streets’ where “Everyone an artist, everyone a scientist.” Sadly it was a vision never built. Now in the centenary of Joan’s birth there will be hundreds of local, pop-up Fun Palaces across the country, each one based on the needs and wants of that community, all part of the national network of Fun Palaces. This is not just an event, it is a movement. We’ll be part of it. More details to follow in September. 4 to 5 October Everyman & Playhouse and Nationwide www.funpalaces.co.uk Illustration by Emily Medley

Cosmic Trigger

23 to 26 October Everyman & Playhouse and in the city

All we know is that it will happen in Liverpool on 23 November. We’ll let you know where… www.cosmictriggerplay.com

For playwrights and theatre-makers, for experiments and the unexpected, Everyword is our annual festival of theatre making. In previous years the festival has forged weird and wonderful collaborations, uncovered the Next Big Play, and stepped into the vast unknown. Everyword connects artists and audiences to the creative cosmos, and imagines: what’s next? There will be workshops, performances, new plays and big ideas – a chance to see the bold and brilliant in the making, and get your hands dirty. This is where world-renowned artists and dazzling Liverpool talent combine to electrify the city. The legacy of the past and the inventors of the present meet to make our theatrical future. And have a bloody great party (you’re all invited). Full details to be announced in September.

In 1976 the legendary Ken Campbell was invited to stage a production at the Liverpool School for Language, Music, Dream and Pun (now home to Flanagan’s Apple on Matthew Street). Never one to shy away from the dare, he formed The Science Fiction Theatre of Liverpool and staged a version of The Illuminatus! a cult novel by Robert Shea and Robert Anton Wilson, which launched a million conspiracy theories. Shot through with magic, sex and drugs, it lasted an epic eight hours, it was not dissimilar to The Warp he created for the Everyman in 1980. Now Ken’s daughter, Daisy Campbell, creates Cosmic Trigger, the back story to Illuminatus! How and where it will be staged remains a mystery.

She Stoops to Conquer

Tue 18 Nov to Sat 22 Nov

0151 709 4776 everymanplayhouse.com

By Oliver Goldsmith

Presented by Northern Broadsides Directed by Conrad Nelson. Designed by Jessica Worrall It’s the 18th century. Kate Hardcastle is a young lady fixed up to meet the eligible Marlow with a view to marriage. Marlow is a young gent who is tongue-tied with the upper classes and downright lecherous with commoners. So when Marlow is tricked into believing Kate’s ancestral home is a country inn, and mistakes Kate for a lowly barmaid what could possibly go wrong?

Set against the increasingly chaotic proceedings of one very long night, She Stoops to Conquer is a delightful romantic romp filled with ludicrous misunderstanding, mischief and mayhem.

Plenty.

Northern Broadsides’ cast of actor-musicians bring their unique charisma, theatrical magic and innate sense of fun to this flamboyant period comedy. Come prepared for merriment, warmth, wit and wigs. Big wigs. Very big wigs!

And when the theatre is not in use for shows, we can offer it for hire for conferences and other events. For all events we can offer a delicious food and drink menu, either chosen from the main menu or from a hospitality menu tailored to all budgets.
