OPENING WEEKEND

LIGHTS UP & HOUSEWARMING 1-2 March 2014 After ten years’ planning and two years’ construction, we celebrated the Everyman’s return with a Lights Up Parade on 1 March and Housewarming the following day. Thousands flocked to be part of the next act of the theatre’s history.

The Lights Up parade (created with Walk the Plank, The Liverpool Lantern Company and Sense of Sound choir) wound through Liverpool from the Playhouse up to the Everyman. The illuminated procession, complete with parade performers, drew a large following as it went through the city centre. Music from Sense of Sound Choir and poetry from 100 primary school children serenaded the new building before Walk the Plank illuminated the front of the building in spectacular fashion with a mix of lights and pyrotechnics, culminating in the return of the iconic Everyman sign.

OPENING WEEKEND

Then, on Sunday, more than 4,500 people came through the doors at the Housewarming, to have a look around the new building and make themselves at home. The new street cafĂŠ and well-loved bistro were filled with people keen to sample the new catering offer and get comfy next to the wood burning stove. Others explored the auditorium, created on the same spot as the old theatre space with 25,000 bricks from the former Hope Hall building, while some took backstage tours to take in all the new facilities.

THANK YOU

THE EVERYMAN WAS DESIGNED AND BUILT BY... The new Everyman is designed by leading theatre architects Haworth Tompkins, who are also responsible for many award winning theatre spaces including London’s Royal Court, Young Vic, The Shed and Bush theatres; the Ustinov Studio and the Egg children’s theatre in Bath; the North Wall performing arts centre in Oxford and the current redevelopment of the National Theatre. They are working on Bristol Old Vic and Chichester Festival Theatre. The design team also includes theatre consultants Charcoalblue whose other projects include the Courtyard and Royal Shakespeare theatres in Stratford-uponAvon; structural engineers Alan Baxter & Associates; Waterman Building Services covering mechanical and electrical design; Gillieron Scott Acoustic Design; and the project was managed by GVA Acuity project managers and Gardiner & Theobald quantity surveyors. Sloyan Doyle carefully deconstructed the old buildings in 2011, saving 25,000 of the original chapel bricks to be used in the new theatre. The construction team was led by Gilbert Ash, who also built Belfast’s Lyric Theatre and Waterfront Hall, the Giant’s Causeway Visitor Centre and the RAF Bomber Command Memorial in London. The front of the building is a large-scale public work of art consisting of 105 moveable metal sunshades, each one carrying a life-sized, water-cut portrait of a Liverpool resident taken by Liverpool photographer Dan Kenyon. Typologist and artist Jake Tilson created a special font for a new version of the iconic red Everyman sign, whilst artist Antoni Malinowski made a large painted ceiling piece for the foyer.

FUTURE NEWS

We hope you’ve enjoyed following the progress of building the new Everyman through our newspapers. It’s been an opportunity to share more about our work in our theatres, in the community, in schools, and outside Liverpool. We’re excited at what the future holds for the company now we’re back to full strength, with the Everyman reunited with its sister theatre, the Playhouse. Our two performance spaces may be very different in style, but together they are united by our desire to dazzle and inspire you, nurture new ideas and talent, celebrate and welcome you. We hope you’ll continue to be part of the journey. You can keep in touch by signing up to receive our e-newsletter via everymanplayhouse.com facebook.com/everymanPLAYHOUSE

A New Beggar’s Opera, Written by Carl Grose Music by Charles Hazlewood, Directed by Mike Shepherd

Specially commissioned for the opening season of the Everyman, acclaimed playwright Michael Wynne returns to Liverpool with a story of myths, memories and secrets. Rattling around in a house on Hope Place, Maggie searches for the truth within a sea of family folklore.

Sat 21 Jun to Sat 12 Jul World première Our first Everyman collaboration is with the irrepressible Kneehigh on a radical new version of John Gay’s musical satire, The Beggar’s Opera. Bursting with wit, wonder and weirdness, an extraordinary Kneehigh cast of actor musicians shoot, hoot and shimmy their way through this twisted morality tale of our times.
