Tartuffe is a beacon of piety and has his feet firmly under the table in the home of wealthy merchant, Orgon. But the family smells a rat and amid the frills and frivolity of seventeenth century society, they hatch a cunning plan to outwit the wily deceiver before he brings their house crashing down… The outstanding Capital of Culture 2008 hit Roger McGough’s “brilliant adaptation” (Independent) of Molière’s sublime comedy returns. Gemma Bodinetz’s “sparkling production” (Sunday Times) opens in Liverpool before a UK tour.

Directed by Gemma Bodinetz Designed by Ruari Murchison Lighting by Colin Grenfell Sound by Fergus O’Hare Music by Conor Linehan Cast includes: Joe Alessi, Eithne Browne, Simon Coates, Annabelle Dowler, Rebecca Lacey, Emily Pithon and Alan Stocks. “There simply aren’t enough superlatives to express just how glorious this production is” The Stage

ATheStar Is Reborn Playhouse Studio Returns For several years the Playhouse housed a small studio in what is now our rehearsal room. It was the compact crucible for many a fledgling writer and performer. Indeed, many of our most celebrated theatre practitioners took their first steps as artists in the safe yet utterly daring Playhouse Studio.

How many times have we been asked if / when we could bring it back? Well the answer is the renaissance of the Playhouse Studio is our birthday present to the theatre. Its opening production will be the world première of a new play by Liverpool writer Lizzie Nunnery, The Swallowing Dark and in November it will play host to Everyword. The new Studio will be a dynamic space which will nurture the theatrical talents of the future.

The Guardian Everyword has seen the first readings of many new plays that have progressed to full-scale productions, which, in the past year alone, include Tiny Volcanoes, Dead Heavy Fantastic, Endz and this season’s The Swallowing Dark.

The First 100 Years Tonight our city leads. All you who care For her fair fame in England keep it fair, Make this foundation firm, work till it be Part of her praise on men’s lips over sea That when they name her they will say of her, ‘Famous for ships and this her theatre’ A Poem for the Opening by John Masefield

On 11 November 1911, a small group of passionate believers established the Liverpool Repertory Company – one of England’s very first ‘reps’ – in what was then the Star Music Hall. In 1917, as a statement of theatrical intent, the building was renamed the Liverpool Playhouse. In 2011 the spirit that underpinned those original pioneers who sought to create high-quality, home-produced theatre in Liverpool is very much alive and well. Throughout its life the Playhouse has fostered some of the country’s finest acting talent – including Robert Donat, Michael Redgrave, Rachel Kempson, John Thaw, Anthony Hopkins, Patricia Routledge, Ian McKellen, Patrick Stewart and many, many more – and the rich variety of the 12

repertory programme formed many generations of committed theatregoers. The creative crucible of the Playhouse Studio brought many new writing and acting talents into the light for the first time, and the main stage has propelled numerous productions out onto the national and international stage. This season offers a taste of the Playhouse’s spirit by combining the finest actors with bold exploration; mingling classic drama with urgent, contemporary writing, and mixing Liverpool talent with national touring and transfers. We hope it gets the next century off to a flying start.

Theatre for Everyone Here at the Playhouse theatre, we believe everyone, no matter what their age or experience, should have the opportunity to enjoy great theatre. Look out for the following symbols on show pages and in the diary at the back. Accessible Performances Audio description is a live verbal commentary giving information on the visual elements of a production as it unfolds. It’s great for anyone who sometimes finds it difficult to see the details of a performance; you don’t have to be blind to make use of audio description. A description of the setting, costumes and a full touch tour of the set are also available before the performance starts. Captioning is similar to television subtitling and converts the spoken word into text, which is displayed on a caption unit situated on or next to the stage. The captions also include the name of the character who is speaking or singing and descriptions of any sound effects. Captioning is a great way for anyone who sometimes finds it difficult to hear the actors speaking to still enjoy coming to the theatre.
