WORLD OF FILMS By Stephen Guy THEY were a prominent feature of people’s lives for more than half a century - places to be entertained and educated, amused or frightened, confused or enlightened. Local cinemas developed from small beginnings in Edwardian times into large film palaces dotted around the suburbs. Both existed together for decades until the arrival of television sounded the death knell for most over a comparatively short period. The years after the Second World War were a boom time for cinemas with studios making increasingly sophisticated productions. Newspapers carried lists of scores of picture houses with the programmes on offer. Local cinemas often showed two different packages of films a week with perhaps a one-off on Sundays. There was great competition between the different houses from the start. Early cinemas were housed in buildings built for different uses. The Rivoli in Aigburth Road started life in 1889 as the Sefton Park Assembly Rooms for the carriage folk. Wealthy merchants and their families attended exclusive invitation-only events. In 1906 it became the Aigburth Assembly Picturedrome after being granted one of the new cinematograph licences. This was the first building to be converted into a cinema in Liverpool. Renamed the Rivoli in 1921, the 600-seater survived as a cinema until 1957 when the wave of closures began throughout the city. The Plaza in Allerton Road,

opened in 1928, was one of the early super cinemas with seating for more than 1,400 people. The entrance foyer featured a statue and fountain in the middle of a pool teeming with goldfish. This fine picture palace changed its name, being known at various times as the Gaumont, Odeon and Classic before being demolished and rebuilt in 1973. I remember going to see a revival of The Jolson Story there in the 1960s. Another cinema I attended was the Mayfair in Aigburth Road, a 1,750-seater dating from 1937. Designed by the well-known Liverpool architect Ernest

Shennan, it was built for spectacle with a palatial auditorium. Cinemas offered much more for your money than today. The lights would dim, the satin curtains part and audiences were entertained with two films plus a newsreel – not forgetting the trailers and Pearl and Dean adverts. Built in 1927, the Woolton Picture House (pictured) is the oldest surviving cinema in Liverpool. STRANGE TALES

GAME OF CHANCE By Anton Valdemart THE boys ran out of the school gates over to the recreation ground bathed in late afternoon summer sunshine. Each wore the uni-

modest but spacious villas on the edge of town. Queen Victoria had recently celebrated her Golden Jubilee and staff and pupils took part in celebrations, organising a garden fete at the school.Ernest Walmsley tucked his tennis racquet under his arm, straightened his mortarboard and led his three friends – Peter Tomkins, Simon

Sinclair and John Jones – over to the school tennis courts. They carefully placed their caps and jackets on the pavilion veranda and rolled up their sleeves. The friends were very competitive and the ball was soon bouncing back on forth over the net at high speed. Although it was supposed to be a friendly warm-up before the

Liverpool Schools Championship, things started to get heated. “Foul!” shouted Sinclair more than once, claiming Jones was using unfair tactics by getting too close and hitting too wide. Later the four settled their differences and the sat together in the shade of a tree, sharing a large bottle of foaming sarsaparilla.

“Tennis is all very well but a game a chance is best – a gamble where the outcome is unknown and the stakes are high,” said Walmsley. Just then four girls from St Roderick’s School for Young Ladies poked their heads over the wall, pulled tongues and ran off giggling. “Come here this minute!” a voice screeched from somewhere in the distance. It was Miss Peabody, St Roderick’s formidable botany teacher. The girls were on a nature walk and the boys watched them climb the embankment and disappear into the dell. Minutes later they decided on the game – whoever hit the fewest balls into the hole in the log must pay a forfeit decided by the others. Walmsley’s face later burnt bright red when he was told he must do the unthinkable – kiss Miss Peabody. He spruced himself up, brushing down his jacket and placing his mortarboard at a jaunty angle. The boys headed for the dell, which featured a pond, where they could hear Miss Peabody’s droning voice. They crouched behind a large tree and observed the

scene. Miss Peabody was sat with the girls forming a semi-circle around her. Walmsley strode over to them, clutching a small bunch of wild flowers. Miss Peabody stood up, confused and annoyed.

“I would like you to have these interesting flowers,” he said, bowing. He stood on tiptoe and lunged at her with pursed lips. Miss Peabody stepped back and Walmsley staggered then fell head-first into the pond.

He pulled himself out and ran off, covered in mud. Even Miss Peabody had to smile. She and the girls discovered a new game – throwing stones at Walmsley’s mortarboard floating in the pond.

Woolton Community Life – Bringing People Together By Dr George Kuruvilla AS A local GP serving the community here in Woolton, my colleagues and I have become increasingly aware of the loneliness and social isolation of our elderly patients and how this affects their health and wellbeing. A survey of our residents confirmed that the majority of our residents considered themselves as lonely.

Two years ago, we at Woolton House Medical Centre joined together with various organisations such as Woolton Residents Association, the various Church communities, local Councillors and the medical practices in Woolton to do something about this and the launch of this Charity is the culmination of this endeavour. The launch takes place on 6 November 3-5.30pm at St

James's Church Hall, Church Road South, Woolton L25 7RJ. The objectives are:to set up a team of volunteers, primarily residents of Woolton, who have the goodwill and time to give to the community and to provide transport by volunteers and through a minibus service to enable housebound people to attend activities and community groups. I have already seen how this has brought this community

How Brian finally beat the habit BRIAN Wallace smoked his first cigarette aged 12 whilst at a Valentine’s Day disco. He was instantly hooked and would go on to spend his dinner money on cigarettes, buying them on his way to school each day. By the time Brian reached his mid-twenties he was smoking 40-60 cigarettes a day. Despite making a determined effort to reduce his intake to 20 a day, he never managed to kick the habit, particularly after losing his wife when his daughter Lauren was just four years old. However, his heavy smoking habit finally caught up with him this year when Brian, 47, suffered a suspected heart attack, two major strokes and 12 mini strokes, providing the catalyst he needed to finally kick the habit. Brian smoked his last ciga-

Brian Wallace rette in March and, after seeking help from Liverpool-based community Stop Smoking Service Roy Castle Fag Ends, he hasn’t looked back. “I had heard about Fag Ends through my doctor’s surgery and thought I’d go along to see what it was all about,” said Brian, a civil servant from Lee Park, Belle Vale in Liverpool. “I found the information Fag Ends provided really helpful, particularly the charts about how long it takes for your organs to start functioning more normally and how much money you can save by not buying cigarettes

as too having carbon monoxide levels tested. I had a cigarette stump in my ashtray and I decided to smoke that, and then quit! I use nicotine lozenges that were provided by Fag Ends to deal with cravings and a fortnightly phone call from my advisor from Roy Castle Fag Ends and dropping into the group helps to keep me focused.” “My daughter Lauren is 17 now and I want to see her grow up. I doubt I would have done if I’d carried on the way I was going. She is really pleased, as is my mum who has been pestering me to cut down for years. I am really proud to have given up and I don’t actually miss it at all, despite smoking for all those years. For further information on help to stop smoking call Roy Castle Fag Ends free phone 08001952131.

Lord Mayor limbers up for Gymophobics opening day SATURDAY 20th September was a big day for the new ladies’ exercise facility on the corner of Green Lane. The Lord Mayor of Liverpool, Councillor Erica Kemp, kindly agreed to officially open the gym. Donna Hubbard, the founder of Gymophobics, was on hand to explain to the Lord Mayor the thinking behind her concept of a 30 minute exercise circuit which enables ladies of all ages and fitness levels to achieve their varied goals. The Lord Mayor was clearly impressed by the facilities on offer. She is an advocate of building exercise into a healthy lifestyle to pro-

mote both mental and physical wellbeing. During her term of office she is fundraising for four charities, one of which is The Alzheimer’s Society. Gymophobics: South Liverpool will be raising funds for this worthy cause over the coming months. Gymophobics is a nationwide company which has been going for over ten years. There are currently 36 centres across the country. Well over 100,000 women have been helped: some to lose weight and inches, others to tone and firm, others to improve their fitness and mobility.

GUNPOWDER, TREASON AND PLOT ... By Stephen Guy, West Derby Society IT WAS 1605 and all England was agog with news of the plot to blow up Parliament, King James I and his Lords and MPs. Revenge was swift and Guy Fawkes and his fellow Catholic plotters were executed in the most barbaric manner – hung, drawn and quartered. This meant they were hanged and, while, still alive, chopped up and their heads and body parts displayed on pikes as a warning to others. All had actively planned the horrific deaths of the Protestant king in an act of outrageous terrorism. It was only through the vigilance of the authorities that Fawkes was spotted before he could light the fuse to ignite the pile of gunpowderfilled barrels under Westminster . This is why we still celebrate the foiling of the plot on 5 November every year by burning and effigy of Guy Fawkes. In 1605 the area that is now south Liverpool was very different from today. It was still partly ancient forest that was gradually being cleared to make way for farmland. Tiny Liverpool’s seven streets were dominated by an ancient castle. A track led through the trees south to Speke Hall. Just one building is said to have stood along the way – and still stands

– the Ancient Chapel of Toxteth. Visitors to Speke Hall are always fascinated by the priests’ hiding places. In 1605 the Hall was occupied by a Catholic family, the Norrises. As followers of the old faith, they had to pay fines for not attending Church of England services. These fines accelerated the financial decline of the Norris family. Thomas Norris inherited the Hall in 1651 and was the first Protestant head of the family, However, he was a Royalist and was on the losing side in the Civil War when puritan Roundheads (Republicans) fought Cavalier dandies (Royalists). The Norris estates were confiscated and not regained until Charles II – the Merry Monarch – was restored to the throne amid national rejoicing after the miserable years of the Commonwealth (Republic) when even dancing was banned. Experience a real court building from the days of the Gunpowder Plot at West Derby Courthouse, West Derby Village, open 2 pm to 4 pm every Sunday April to October (not Easter) and 10 am to 2 pm on Village Market days, first Saturday of the month (not January). Also open to schools and other groups by arrangement by calling 0151 228 8717.

Will is a typical working Collie with a very active mind and body. He loves to learn new tricks, and picks up on training very quickly. He is looking for an owner who has the time and energy to entertain his busy mind and exercise him. He can be a bit nervous and is on a confidence building programme at the centre, so would need an owner who can continue with this and build up his trust. If you can give Will a loving home, please contact Dogs Trust Merseyside on 0151 480 0660 or drop into the centre at Whiston Lane, Liverpool, L36 6HP Dogs Trust is the UK’s largest dog welfare charity and cares for over 17,000 stray and abandoned dogs each year through its network of 19 Rehoming Centres across the UK and one in Dublin. Christmas wrappings HEY guys, it’s finally the time of year that I have been waiting for all year!! Christmas decoration time! If you are like me and absolutely love this time of year then I have no doubt you’ll have your tree up nice and early. Last year I was slightly behind (for me!) and didn't put it up until mid-November but luckily I am more prepared this year and put it up at the end of October. If I had my way, the tree would stay up all year round! I love the winter nights with the candles on, sitting back admiring the many trees that I have put up! If you’re still on the lookout for some pieces Taskers and All That Jazz in Stockton Heath (Warrington) are the best places this year and

I love this stylish black faux fur collar biker jacket from River Island for £65, with a cosy light brown faux fur collar. http://www.riverisland.com/

prices are slightly cheaper than other places. As the temperatures have dropped quite a bit lately I have become quite obsessed with faux fur!! Many celebrities are driving the trend for coats, shawls and gilets. Various High Street stores are stocking exciting faux fur fashions that complement a myriad of styles and tastes. The range of faux fur garments available today promises fans something fashionably soft and luxurious for keeping the cold at bay. There are many stores offering authentic furs but I much prefer the faux fur so have hand-picked a few of my fav’s off the High Street.

GIG

Live music should be a joint effort By Nic Perrins

GUIDE

ONE thing I’ve learned since starting the Mersey Gig Guide this year is that many people have an opinion on the current state of Liverpool’s live music scene. Some feel that the venues don’t do enough to promote and host live music, some feel that audiences are apathetic, others

‘I know for a fact there is no shortage of great live rock bands in Liverpool, no shortage of venues wanting to host them and no shortage of people saying they want to watch’ are blaming the abundance of open mic nights for a reduced demand for fully plugged rock gigs. But over the last 10 months, I have come to know countless bands, venues, and event pro-

moters, all keen to host live gigs, often with personal financial risk attached. Yet despite that, 90% of gigs I’ve listed on the Gig Guide since January have all had one thing in common – they

have been free. I am bombarded daily with people asking me to help them promote their gigs and I know for a fact there is no shortage of great live rock bands in Liverpool, no shortage of ven-

ues wanting to host them and no shortage of people saying they want to watch. So, if we all do our bit, the process should be simple: the venue takes a risk on a band and pays them the going rate. To guarantee a full pub and good bar sales, the venue promotes the gig. Then, in order to secure repeat bookings, and generate some great PR, the band also promotes the gig and brings a crowd. Finally Joe Public makes the effort to get off the sofa and get down to the pub to enjoy a few beers and a great gig. It’s not difficult, but it does require team effort. I’m in – are you?

ADVERTISING ANNOUNCEMENT

Leading light on Liverpool and UK property auctions joins firm Garry Abrams boosts Gregory Abrams Davidson property law team. Garry Abrams, a highly respected property auctions lawyer in the region and the UK has joined Gregory Abrams Davidson (GAD) LLP as a Consultant Solicitor. Based between GAD’s Matthew Street and Penny Lane offices, his brief will be to enhance the firm’s thriving Conveyancing department. Garry’s particular interest is in helping landlords and prospective landlords, to

establish and build up property portfolios as well as assisting and advising them generally. He said:“I work with many builders and developers in this regard, with whom I have a good business relationship. I also work with estate agents, insurance brokers, property professionals and individuals. One of my areas of expertise is providing advice at property auctions and I “staff”the legal advice desk at the Liverpool auctions, held regularly by Sutton Kersh. “On auction day, I am always happy to run through a

contract with a prospective purchaser and point out any pertinent clauses and possible pitfalls. Many prospective buyers are surprised to learn that once the auction hammer falls, and they are the highest bidder, they have entered into a contract to purchase (on the basis of the auction terms and conditions), from which they cannot withdraw. Ask about how his appointment will add to GAD’s offer, he added: “I’d like to think my knowledge of the Liverpool property scene, combined with

my expertise in property law gives me an edge. I always try and combine this with a friendly professional, personal and efficient approach, thus always providing clients with a high level of service. We also have an excellent team here

including Lucy Joel who assists with issues as soon as they arise.” Garry Abrams can be contacted at Gregory Abrams Davidson on 0151 236 5000 or by email garryabrams@gadllp.co.uk

Putting on the style... Art group ‘kindred spirits’ FOLLOWING a sell-out Fashion and Clothes Evening earlier in the year, Woodlands Hospice has organised two further events in November. This is a great opportunity to purchase current, famousbrand High Street fashions at fantastic discount prices whilst having a great night out. Clothes sold will be in a full range of sizes from 822. The first event will take place at 7pm on Thursday 6th November at the Longmoor Social Club in Fazakerley with the second at 7pm at the Crosby Comrades Club on Wednesday 19th November. Tickets cost £5 and all proceeds from each evening will go to support the work of the Woodlands Hospice. Christine Peach,

are still going strong

Community Fundraising Manager, said: “These events are incredibly popular and a great way of picking up a bargain whilst helping to raise funding for Woodlands Hospice. We are encouraging ladies who attend the Crosby show to bring along unwanted items of clothing which will be sold in the Woodlands Hospice Charity Shop. We

know these will be two great nights out and I advise people to book tickets early!” As you can see from the photograph, Woodlands Hospice staff are clearly in the mood for trying on and buying new clothes! Tickets for each event cost £5 and can be obtained by ringing Kristina (0151 529 2968) or Ruth (0151 529 8389).

IN 1977 the Garston Carnival, which used to be a popular annual event in and around Garston, had as one of its features a Carnival Art Exhibition. A group of local artists who had been responsible for the exhibition were so impressed with the work being displayed, and the enthusiasm expressed, that they decided to hold an open meeting with a view to forming an art group. This meeting was pivotal in gathering together kindred spirits and exposed a need for such a group. The South Liverpool Arts Group was thus formed in the autumn of 1977. Now, after over 35 years

we are still going strong with a membership approaching 50, made up of mainly adults. We are all amateur artists, mostly painters, and most of us live in the South Liverpool area. The Group will be holding an Exhibition at the Reader Gallery, Calderstones Park from 17th to 23rd November 2014. Works will be on sale and would make wonderful Christmas presents. We would also welcome anyone who would like to join the group. Meetings are held at Chaloner Hall, St. Austin's Church, 561 Aigburth Road. The room is available for

members’ use every Tuesday evening from 7:30pm until 10:00pm, where we have a full programme covering talks and demonstrations by guest speakers; hold portrait sessions, life classes and material 'workshops'; talk about art, sort out each other's technical problems; paint in the field, either individually or as a group, or just 'do-it-yourself' evenings (not necessarily in that order and not all at the same time!). All these activities take place in an extremely congenial atmosphere – to which we attribute the Group's continuing success. For more details, ring Jim Bridge on 0151 281 6021.

SEFTON MAKE SLOW START TO SEASON by Abii McLindon Despite some great pre-season training, both the womens’ and mens’ first teams at Liverpool Sefton Hockey Club have started the season slowly. The men in the Northern Hockey League have one draw from their first three games and the women in the Investec North League have two draws from four games. Following games against Loughborough, Kendal and Whitley Bay, the women played Cannock last weekend. With Cannock one place below Liverpool Sefton in the league table it was crucial to take points from this fixture and build momentum for the rest of the season. A series of short corners for Sefton produced the first real opening in the game and a move straight off the training ground saw a fierce shot from Jayne Bazley-Harrison ricochet off the left upright. Sefton remained on top for the rest of the half but were unable to convert any of their chances. The second half saw Sefton launch a series of dangerous attacks.

SUTTON KERSH SPONSOR LOCAL UNDERare12S’ TEAM Sutton Kersh are delighted to be from the North Liverpool area, sponsoring the ‘Blue Team’ at Everton Red Triangle (ERT) under 12s Football Club. Phil Lawton, director at Sutton Kersh, said: “We are really happy to be able to support ERT this season. We believe in investing in the community to help give local people an opportunity. Everyone at Sutton Kersh wishes them lots of success for this season and their futures.’

Emma Gaunt used fancy footwork to get to the dead ball line and produce a great cross which Jayne deflected into the net. 1-0 to Sefton! The game now opened up with Clare Panter and Grace Moffat battling hard in midfield and Vicki Bell, Rachel and Nat Hannah steadfast in defence. As the final whistle blew a short corner was conceded and with the last hit of the game Cannock equalised. Two points lost!

ALLOWING TIME FOR YOURSELF by Paul Coshott If you have read the book 'The Secret' by Rhonda Byrne, or any other similar book (for example, 'The Law of Attraction' or 'The Power of Deliberate Intent'), what they will talk about is that what you think, you become. They would say that everything is done through vibration so, with regards to health and fitness, if you see yourself getting fitter and stronger and looking better, and you believe that is going to happen, then resources will come back to you which will help you achieve those outcomes. However, before this happens you must allow time for yourself to release those vibrations. Recently, I have been doing hot yoga at Planet Yoga on Smithdown Road. This has helped me to calm myself down for an hour and help me focus on and visualise what I want to happen over the coming week. An increase in my flexibility is a bonus but, otherwise, it helps me feel confident about what is going to happen regarding my goals. Going to the gym and using a mobile phone, or any other gadget, in any other activity will not help you achieve this physical state. It is vital that you try and spend a small amount of time away from your usual everyday habits and allow yourself to become calm and gain focus and clarity towards the things you wish to happen. Therefore, as you do this, you will give out those vibrations that are relevant to your desired outcomes. For more information about hot yoga, please visit www.planetyogaliverpool.co.uk

The club started in 2009 to provide a good standard of football opportunities for the community, with a focus on social and personal development as well as having fun and encouraging community cohesion. The club name however dates back over 100 years, when it started as the Everton Red Triangle Boys Club, providing multiple sports activities and was also part of the YMCA. Wayne McDonald, coach and chairman at Everton Red Triangle Football Club, added: “All players

and it’s been amazing to watch the kids grow and develop. They are such a great team, so enthusiastic and energetic and really do give their all in training and at every game.” The team play in the Scotland Road Junior Football League on a Saturday morning. Last season ERT were awarded The Fair Play Trophy for their respectful approach to football within the league. As well as the league, the team participates in many different tournaments across the country throughout the year, and are due to attend an international football tournament being held at Butlins Skegness in May 2015. “Everyone at the club are proud to have Sutton Kersh as our Blue Team sponsor as they are a highly professional local business, with a strong history of supporting the Liverpool area, demonstrating their clear social values through their support of community clubs such as ERT,” added Wayne.

SOUTH OPEN UP FOURPOINT GAP AT THE TOP ous chances to put the game to bed were missed and a welcome 3 points was well-earned. The previous week, South raced unto anothertwo-goal lead at Chester Nomads with both goals coming from striker Dalton. The home side got then equalised early in the second half before further goals from Dalton and leading scorer Alex Woodcock brought a 4-2 scoreline which produced a more realistic result. Again, all South’s main rivals dropped points putting the team in a good position as winter beckons.

by Jim Stanway On a day when all their main rivals were involved in cup competitions, South Liverpool FC opened up a fourpoint gap at the top of the West Cheshire League First Division table with a 2-1 win at local rivals Hale. Extracting revenge for defeat in the Liverpool Challenge Cup in September, South won the league game comfortably despite a late goal by the home side. Early goals by Tom Kinsella and Cameron Dalton gave South the edge but numer-

South’s reserves experienced their first defeat of the season with elimination from the league cup against a very experienced Neston Nomads by 2-1. Nomads’ midfielder Richie Foulkes is one of the best players in the whole league and was responsible for creating both the equaliser after Scott Dunning’s opener for South and the decisive penalty after South’s centre-half Louis Fay was sent sent off for deliberate handball. The team retain a twopoint lead in the third division table despite dropping two points to lowly

Chester Nomads Reserves. The team progressed to the third round of the Liverpool Junior Cup with a fortuitous 4-2 win over Speke-based outfit Red and Blue after extra time with goals from Ryan McMahon, Francis Evans, Chris Williamson and Adam Shelton. The youth team lost their 100% record with a 5-3 defeat to nearest rivals Custy’s although other wins against Vauxhall Motors, Hale Colts and against Belfry in the Liverpool Youth Cup have given the team a 3-point lead in the league and a trip to Formby Juniors in the cup.

The Fulwood Arms FC endeavoured a rather miserable first season as a football team. The first season blues saw them pick up only one win and one draw for the entire 2013-14 season. The team refused to give in, however, and decided to give it another shot. Since moving from the Formers League into the Second Division of the Liverpool Sunday District League, the Fulwood Arms have picked up two wins and a draw from five leagues games, better than their record for the whole of last season!

The results have included a 3-1 win over second in the table, Wood St FC and a fantastic recovery from 3-0 down against Fazakerley FC, which resulted in a hard earned 3-3 draw after a fantastic second half display. Currently unbeaten at home, Fulwood Arms are building up a great confidence and a united squad that is improving week by week and are hoping to put a challenge this season for a high place in the league and a possible good cup run. The future is looking a lot brighter in the football world for The Fulwood Arms.

Adam Boaks – last season’s Stoneycroft player of the year.

CROFT BOW OUT OF CUP by Mick Tetherington Premier League side Stoneycroft FC crashed out of the Liverpool Challenge Cup to St. Helens-based Penlake after a rather dismal display at Maiden Lane. The East Liverpool outfit can have no complaints about the result following a below par performance and will be disappointed that recent improvements have not been maintained. The two positives to take from the 3-1 defeat were the contribution from Adam Newbolt, coming on as substitute and making his debut, whose robust style upset the visitors’ defenders and earned himself a place on the score sheet, and the fact that Croft are now able to concentrate on the league. They face a stiff test when they welcome Liver Academy to the Lane in their next fixture and boss Kirkpatrick will be looking for much improved contributions from his players. On a more pleasing note the Junior side, which they have just taken under their wing, have

been impressive in their games so far. In a recent encounter against The Farmers they eventually ran out winners in a hard fought contest with Joe Chandler netting twice. Franco Hyland earned rave reviews, dictating play in true midfield general style and ran team mate Joel Chandler close for the Man of The Match award. Juniors manager, Lee Scott, was full of praise for his players after the game, expressing his pleasure at the way “we carried out our game plan and got the result”. He also recognised the part Farmers played in “an excellent game” and said “well done to all the players for the part they played in a great game”. All those who witnessed the game will agree with those sentiments. Croft’s Veterans XI have also had a satisfying start to their campaign, which has been a bit stop-start up to now, but performances so far will hold them in good stead once the season gets into full swing.
