EDWARDIAN YULETIDE By Stephen Guy IT WAS a time remembered for gloriously hot summers and bitterly cold winters when anything seemed possible before the horrors of the First World War. In reality the Edwardian era from 1901 to 1914 had its share of social, economic and political problems but much of these have been largely forgotten. Instead we like to focus on the positive aspects of a period almost in living memory when life seemed simpler. There were less distractions when Christmas approached.
Although commercial exploitation was beginning, the festive season was more about family and friends. Liverpool had large department stores such as Lewis’s but there was also a huge array of smaller shops where staff had the time and inclination to serve customers. Cash customers were pampered whenever they set the shop doorbell jangling. Drapers laid out wide ranges of items on polished counters for scrutiny while haberdashers catered for those making their own clothes. Grocers told you about the food
you were buying – much of it sourced locally. Even the smallest communities often had their own tailors, dressmakers and milliners. At a time when there was little mass production, people wanted to have their own distinctive look – and could get it fairly cheaply. They could choose their own colours and styles. Woolton customers who wanted to do their Christmas shopping locally in 1907 were spoilt for choice. In Woolton Street there was a china shop, tobacconists, post office, butcher, milliner, florist, grocery, shoemaker, confectioner, ironmonger and watchmaker. Similar attractions in nearby Allerton Road included a chemist, draper, greengrocer, dressmaker, laundress, cycle agent and baker. To modern eyes this looks a remarkable amount of choice and meant that most people could do all their shopping within walking distance of home. Woolton remains a vibrant shopping area. Public holidays were well established by Edwardian times so most people could expect to be off work over Christmas. Hotels were few and far between but the Woolton Hall Hydro (pictured) was a popular venue which attracted wealthy patrons who had over-indulged during festivities. It was an upmarket health farm offering hydropathic treatments - also known as water cures. Customers were plunged into hot and cold baths and drank copious amounts of water to purge the effects of too much rich food and drink.

HELLO EVERYONE, AND WELCOME TO THE DECEMBER ISSUE OF THE LINK – your favourite local independent advertiser Dawn Williams
Moira Hesketh
THERE are still a few weeks to go...but, as this is our festive issue, there?s nothing like getting your greeting in first! So, from all of us here at The LINK, we hope you and yours have the Happiest Christmas ever. We hope also that, while you are having a fantastic time, you will also spare a thought for those who will find that Christmas is not such a happy time...families who have lost a loved one in the past year or people who, for whatever reason, find themselves on their own and those
people who may have health or money worries. For some, Christmas can be the loneliest and most painful time of the year, especially if it marks a first without someone special. If you know of someone who may not be looking forward to Christmas for one reason or another, then why not do something special for them; invite them in for a drink, buy them a little gift, or simply make a friendly phone call to see if they are OK. Isn?t that what the Christmas spirit is all about?
To our readers and advertisers alike, we hope you and your families have your best Christmas yet. We?ll be back in January to help you see in the New Year. If you want to see your message or advertisement in the January issue, then please do remember to supply your material by 8th December in order to meet our earlier holiday deadline. A very big thank you to all our advertisers and readers, With our very best seasonal wishes, Moira and Dawn

BE PROPERTY AHEAD OF THE GAME
By Naomi Hardy, BE Property Services WHEN approached by my son’s local under 12s football team, Arncliffe Juniors FC, to sponsor them to obtain kits for training and match days we at BE Property jumped at the opportunity to offer our support. Operating as an independent local business we felt that it was vital to integrate with the local community and give something back. The team trains in Halewood and are part of the Belle Vale and Conference League. It was important to us as a company
to not only sponsor a team that we had an affinity with but also a team who would be representing us in our prime locations. The team are currently working their way up the league and celebrated a fantastic win on Sunday 8th November. We have got no doubts that they will do well and have a fantastic season. This year we at BE Property Services in Woolton Village have broken our own records in terms of new instructions and completions. We remain a customer-focused estate agency and hopefully we will continue to prosper.

STRANGE TALES
HAND OF THE STRANGER carols. Then, as always, Grandfather led them singing his favourite song, You Must Always Help the Stranger – a popular hit from his youth.Soon more relatives arrived and Sir Lancelot warmly shook their cold hands – they had walked across Bickerstaffe Moss, gloomy and forbidding now the sun had set.
By Anton Valdemart IT WAS a bright December day, everywhere decorated with heavy frost glowing in the sunshine streaming across the countryside. A group of chattering people walked briskly through the park where deer chewed placidly on bales of hay dotted around the meadows.

Stories were told after dinner, tales of Lancashire goblins and boggarts said to inhabit the local countryside.
The half-timbered hall was surrounded by a murky moat covered by thin films of ice. Green Man Hall, home of the Wildboars for centuries, was reached by crossing a low sandstone bridge.
Grotesque faces peered down from the roof, carved centuries earlier by craftsmen who knew and feared the beings of the night.
A jovial, ruddy-faced man watched the visitors approaching and smiled with pleasure. Sir Lancelot Wildboar always looked forward to festive visits from his relatives. The hall was decorated in the traditional way with holly and ivy, rather than factory-made paper decorations. He greeted his visitors with warm handshakes and they were soon sat around a blazing fire in the cavernous hall with its blackened, ancient timbers. The merry group included his two sons, both gentlemen farmers, their wives and assorted children. Laughter reverberated around the room. All gathered around the piano and sang
“I saw him once,” said Sir Lancelot. “The Stag Man was tall, very tall. He had not been seen since my great-grandfather’s time and his appearance was always linked to family deaths and misfortunes. “Yet nothing happened. I saw him in Windy Copse after a long, difficult walk from Mawdesley. “I had just climbed over the stile when I saw him staring at me. His horns were silhouetted against the moon yet he stood upright like a man. He had hooves instead of hands. “I was young and pretty fearless in those days, so I walked towards him. The Stag Man retreated to an old oak and vanished. The

next day I had it felled.” His elder son Robert said: “We had it taken away by the timber-fellers last week. Oak of that age is very valuable.” It was late, the children were tired, and the visitors left for home. The servants were dismissed and Sir Lancelot stared into the dying embers of the fire. There was an echoing knock on the door.

A visitor towered over Sir Lancelot who smiled and extended his hand in greeting, his favourite song still reverberating in his head. The stranger removed his glove and held out something brown and glossy in the flickering lantern light. Sir Lancelot’s trembling hand clutched the Stag Man’s hoof and the old man was led silently into the warm welcoming embrace of eternity. E: p.colligan@btconnect.com Our safeguarding policy and procedure regarding safer recruitment and selection will be adhered to throughout the application and interview process.
MARIE Curie would like to invite you to their annual Lights to Remember service at Liverpool Cathedral on Sunday 14th December at 6pm. Fundraiser Antony Jones said: “We’re asking people to join us for an evening of carols, readings and the children’s daffodil procession. The service provides an opportunity to remember your loved one by dedicating a light and a message to them and will bring comfort to those who have lost loved ones at this special time of year. All dedications received will be available to view in a special book of messages at the hospice chapel from December 19th, throughout the festive period.” “Given the choice, most of us would want to be cared for at home or in a hospice if we were seriously ill. Marie Curie Cancer Care
makes this possible. Our hospice here in Liverpool provides free specialist medical care for those with serious illnesses and emotional support for their families, giving them the best possible quality of life. People can come here to stay or visit regularly for pain relief, physio, complementary therapies and more. The sad fact is that every five minutes someone in the UK dies without the care they need at the end of their life. That’s why we urgently need to reach more people – and why we’re counting on your support”. For more information about the service, or to sponsor a light, please call 0151 801 1412, or email antony.jones@mariecurie.org.uk. Your gift will help Marie Curie support terminally ill patients and their families this Christmas. No tickets are required and all are welcome.

Free support available for those affected by problematic gambling BEACON Counselling Trust along with National Treatment Provider GamCare is raising awareness of their FREE support service for those affected by Problematic Gambling especially over the Christmas period. Kathy Devlin of Beacon Counselling Trust said “We launched the service in Liverpool in April and to date over 400 people have come through our doors and accessed counselling to help them with this problem. “It has been heart-warming to see the difference that the service has made to the lives of so many, the thank-you cards and letters of appreciation have been overwhelming, one gentleman was in tears and told us that he had gambled for the majority of his adult life, through our service he has stopped gambling and feels for the first time ever he has finally got his life back.” The unique thing about this service is that it offers FREE support to those who have a gambling problem but also to those who have been affected by a problematic gambler this could be a partner, parent or other family member, often the forgotten ones in this arena
Councillor Peter Mitchell, Chairman of The Big Help Project, was instrumental in developing the service in Merseyside “It is so important that people who are suffering from this problem are aware that help is available, particularly over the Christmas period” Stephen Twigg, MP for West Derby said “Gambling affects people across the board, old and young alike, it is a major social issue which
permeates its way through so many psycho social arenas such as debt, poverty, family and relationship breakdowns, domestic violence, crime and mental health problems and I urge anyone affected by this problem to contact Beacon without delay. To access this FREE service ring Beacon on 0151 321 1099 or GamCare National Helpline on 0808 8020 133 (8am-midnight, 7 days per week).

Log on to learning THE Computer Tutor service is ideal for anyone who wishes to learn to use their own computer or tablet properly. Computers have become an essential part of modern life, but they can be life enhancing too: Enjoy seeing and talking to your family on the other side of the world for free and sharing photos and stories in an instant. We recognise how anxious some people can be when they are learning. Unlike group classes you only need
to study what you want to learn and can work at a pace that suits you. You can ask as many questions as you need. Because we are teachers not technicians our tutoring is tailored to your individual needs, if you need to go over something several times before you master it, then that is no problem. Only learn the technical side if you want to. We do not work to a set curriculum, but follow a tried and tested route to encourage mature students and novices
to get what they want out of their computer. We often advise a student to put a notebook and pen by their computer and make a note of anything which causes them a problem. When they have a list of items to discuss, it is time to call Computer Tutor for help. You can book a one-off lesson or a series. LIFE ‘n’ STYLE ...
with JADE AINSWORTH
It’s party, party, party time ... HI everyone and welcome to my last column of 2014!!! I cannot believe how fast the year has gone! My social diary has been non-stop over the past few weeks. We were invited to the fabulous Juice FM Style Awards on Saturday at The Titanic Hotel in Liverpool, and what an amazing event it was. I loved every minute off it. Everybody who came looked stunning and did our stylish city very proud. Congratulations to the winners. I also attended the Collective Honour Awards, which again were absolutely fabulous! I was totally taken aback and star-struck by the celebrities that were there. The gorgeous Kim Cattrall walked away with the International Arts Icon Award. I love going to these type of events in our city, as nobody does it like Liverpool and everyone who walked in looked like they should have an award for the effort they had put in. I went along to cover the
Celebration Of Style Event for Cricket’s Big Fashion Night Out at the Liver Building in Liverpool's city Centre for my blog. What a turn out it was!!! Some of the world’s biggest designers showcased their collections including Givenchy, Lanvin, Stella McCartney, Saint Laurent and Victoria Beckham. Whilst there, everybody was asking where my playsuit/maxi was from. It was the Roxy Floral Chiffon Plunge Maxi/Playsuit from Missguided. I am in love with so many of their outfits lately and what’s really good is that they are all reasonably priced! This Roxy Dress, pictured
right, is only £24.99!!! I have had a lot of people message me on social media asking me about what hair extensions I use – I generally swap between the Sleek hair wefts and the Beautyworks hair wefts. If I have a few nights out coming up I tend to spend slightly more and go for the Gold Double Weft hair by Beautyworks The double drawn hair is ultimate luxury, specifically processed by hand to ensure all hair lengths are the same length, resulting in thicker, fuller looking hair. Quality hair that lasts and is reusable for many months! I love this hair that much that we have started to stock it in our salon, Hairfields in Childwall, Liverpool (0151722-3798). We can either do a mail order for you if you know what hair you would like or you can come in and choose. I would like to wish all my readers a very merry Christmas and a happy New Year! See you in 2015!! Love Jade x

WHERE DID ALL THE VENUES GO? I POST on the Mersey Gig Guide Facebook page every day and am used to seeing a few hundred people engaging with each post. But last week I posted a comment with a difference. When I mentioned the planned flattening of Nation (home to Cream) and The Kazimier, within a couple of hours, the post had been seen by more than 10,000 people and the comments were flying thick and fast. The loss of these iconic Liverpool venues has evoked mixed emotion – a lot of people have likened it to the demolition of the original Cavern Club and are calling to the council to learn from past mistakes and save the inherent culture of our wonderfully musical city. But a few have pointed out that trends change and things need to move on.
I can’t sit on the fence for this one. Liverpool has musical history spanning so many levels, and I for one, feel that it should be cherished. I was never a fan of dance music in my youth, but even I realise the significance of Cream and the massively iconic status it held worldwide during its heyday. Liverpool dominated the dance music scene. Not London, not New York … Liverpool. I know to some people this may all seem like crying over spilt milk, but Liverpool has heart and that doesn’t happen by accident – it happens because the people here have passion, talent and vision. But how long that can last in a cloned, soul-less city, full of boxy, clinical apartment blocks and trendy wine bars, is anyone’s guess.

Sutton Kersh Auctions enjoy bumper year Sutton Kersh, the best performing auction firm in Liverpool for the last eight years, holds its final auction of 2014 on Thursday, 11 December. Already this year Sutton Kersh has sold over 460 residential, commercial and development lots, generating proceeds of over £30 million. Auction Manageress Cathy Holt says: ‘We have enjoyed another excellent year, with strong demand for stock in all categories. Investors have reacted positively to realistic guide prices and continue to favour property as their investment vehicle of choice. ‘With one sale to go I am confident that the final number of lots sold will exceed 500, producing overall income of around £35 million. This performance is once again well ahead of our competitors and reaffirms our position as the number one auction firm in the area.’ Highlights from the October sale, when 80% of lots offered sold, included a vacant Grade II listed six bedroom house in Wavertree. Olive Mount Villas on Mill Lane was the subject of fierce bidding and achieved £217,500, off a guide of £125,000 plus. Meanwhile, a vacant three bedroom lodge within the
grounds of Allerton Hall was snapped up for £183,000, off a guide of £150,000 plus. The Sutton Kersh auction on Thursday, 11 December takes place at the Liverpool City Centre Marriott Hotel, starting at 12 noon. Details of all the lots going under the hammer are available to view at www.suttonkersh.co.uk/auctions-property/.

ADVERTISING ANNOUNCEMENT
Buying a property Whilst there is some debate about the state of the economy, job security and mortgage lending, there is little doubt that many of us choose to buy our own homes. For a first time buyer this is especially daunting and whilst it can be complex this article will summarise the key elements and role of the Solicitor. Once you have found a property to buy you will put in an offer via the Estate Agent “subject to Survey and subject to Contract”, then consult a Financial Advisor or lender to make your mortgage application. A Survey will be arranged (there are varying degrees of Survey) and subject to any recommendations on value and condition of the property or reports which may be needed regarding property repairs, a final price will be agreed. At this stage if you have not already, you will need to instruct a Solicitor to deal with the legal aspects on behalf of you and your lender. Whilst you may have set your heart on the property and already planned your colour schemes, the legal title must be “good and marketable”; this is what your Solicitor must check thoroughly. The Solicitor will obtain from the seller’s legal representatives a Contract Package, send off searches
to check for example relevant planning aspects, local issues and other matters which may affect the property, check that the seller has good legal title to sell, has complied with planning and building regulations requirements, that any rights that you need to access and maintain the property exist and ensure that any current mortgages or loans secured on the property are paid off when you hand over the purchase money. Lenders have detailed requirements and your Solicitor will also check that these are satisfied. Once your Solicitor has addressed all aspects they will usually report to you, the buyer, and have you sign the Contract, Stamp Duty Land Tax Forms and Mortgage Deed and pay over your 10% deposit ready to “exchange”. On exchange of Contracts a completion or move date is agreed and is legally binding and at that stage you will need to put your buildings insurance cover into place and any life cover on risk. Your lender will be requested to release the mortgage advance and you will be asked by your Solicitor for any balance of money they need to complete including Land Registry fees, Stamp Duty Land Tax and legal fees. On the day of completion your Solicitor will send the purchase money through to the seller’s Solicitors – an exact time of arrival
of funds cannot be guaranteed by the banks so whilst a buyer will often be packed and ready to move just after that morning cup of tea and bowl of cornflakes it may well be much later in the day when the keys can be collected, usually from the Estate Agent. It is wise to liaise with the seller in addition to establish what time they anticipate being out of the property as they will have last minute packing, cleaning and removals to attend to as well. Once the keys are collected you are then free to move into the property and if you have not already done so it is wise to take meter readings and notify the Utility Companies and Local Authority of the chance in ownership. Your Solicitor’s job does not end on the day of completion as they will deal with the filing at HM Revenue & Customs of the Stamp Duty Land Tax Return, attend to the payment of any Stamp Duty Land Tax, obtain the legal transfer documents from the seller’s Solicitors together with any existing Title Deeds and documents, Guarantees and other relevant paperwork. They will then deal with registration at HM Land Registry confirming the change in ownership and a new Title Information Document evidencing the change of ownership will be obtained from the Land Registry. Any documents required by your
lender will be sent to them and you will be sent the balance of documentation for your records and safekeeping. Your file of papers will then be archived. Buying a house is not always as straightforward as it may seem and the length of the transaction can vary – often anything from 4-12 weeks. Your Solicitor plays an important and vital role in the conveyancing process and should supply you with a detailed costs breakdown at the outset so that you are able to budget appropriately and ensure that you do not encounter any hidden extras at the end of the transaction. Your Solicitor should endeavour to progress matters and explain to you if there are any problems or delays in the process. It is important to bear in mind when choosing a conveyancer the type of service that you will require and whether you would prefer personal direct service from one Solicitor or a more team based approach from a “factory” conveyancer. Whatever
your choice or preference you should bear in mind that your property is probably the most expensive investment you will ever make and you should thereafter be very careful in your choice of legal expert. The writer Helena Mitchinson is a Solicitor and Partner at Gregory Abrams Davidson LLP. She has practiced in the South Liverpool area for over 24 years and can be contacted on 0151 733 3353 or by email hmitchinson@gadllp.co.uk.

CROFT PASS LAST YEAR’S POINTS TALLY BUT ARE SHOT DOWN BY BIG GUNS By Mick Titherington
NATIONAL CUP CAMPAIGN BEGINS by Peter Harrison THE prestigious FA national Sunday cup commenced in October and as usual Liverpool teams were heavily represented. Liverpool teams have a rich tradition in the competition and those who entered will hope to go further than the Oyster who were unlucky losing finalists last year. With 46 ties played in the first round it is clear national interest is as keen as ever. The Alder Fc Sunday side drew an away fixture to local team The Molly. Played at Ashton Town FC, Alder returned with a 2-0 victory thanks to strikes from Macka and Jobo.
Mention must also go Home and Bargain who also play at the Alder ground; trailing 2-1 with 10 minutes of the game remaining, Jimmy Vaughan’s men secured a 3-2 victory against a gallant Millhouse team from the Wirral. Both teams have now earned away fixtures in the second round to opposition outside of the city. The Saturday first team are now a nicely placed fifth in the league, just two points behind the leaders after a 2-0 victory against E L Lilley Buck and Jobo on the score sheet. They exited the Challenge Cup after a 2-1 defeat against West Cheshire league opposition Hale FC and also suffered a 4-1 defeat
to league leaders Waterloo GSOB. The second team have found life tough and, although playing well, have been unable to turn their performances into points. They lost 41 against league leaders KCFC, although were only trailing by a single goal with ten minutes remaining. A combination of injuries and absence has meant inconsistency in team selection, but it is hoped fortunes will change as the team settles and establishes itself. Pictured is the Alder FC Sunday team who compete in the Premier Division of the Business Houses League.

protein choices to be grilled or broiled, and instead of fatty or creamy sauces, ask for a side of salsa or Worcester sauce to boost the flavour. Save it for your free day – if you're craving an unhealthy dish at your favourite restaurant, set time aside on your free day to enjoy it, without substitutions.

‘EATING out successfully over Christmas’ – seven tips Eat before you go – this may sound counter-intuitive, but having a healthy snack before you go out can make it easier to resist the menu's more tempting offerings. Say no to the breadbasket - this also goes for the bottomless bowls of chips and salsa offered at many Mexican restaurants. There's no need to fill up on empty or fat-filled calories before your meal even starts. Know the lingo – read the description for each dish and avoid ordering anything that contains these words: Buttery, creamy, cheesy, fried, au gratin, alfredo, con queso or sweet-and-sour. Split an entrée – restaurant portion sizes are often double what you actually need. Keep your portion sizes in check by sharing an entrée with a friend, or asking the server to take half and put it in a doggy bag before you begin your meal. Watch out for the salad – ordering a salad seems like a healthy option, but when it comes loaded with fatty dressing, bacon, fried chicken, cheese or tortilla chips, it could be worse than eating a
simple hamburger. Request the dressing on the side, and ask for low-fat versions of your favorites, vinaigrettes or olive oil and balsamic vinegar. Stick with grilled chicken, lean steak, fish or seafood. Go all-out on the veggies, and skip the bacon, cheese and other toppings. And, by all means, if your salad comes in a fried tortilla bowl, don't eat the bowl. Don't be afraid to ask – it's OK to request substitutions, such as steamed vegetables, extra vegetables or a side salad instead of rice or potatoes. You can ask for your chicken, beef or other

WITH wins against Liver Academy and South Sefton Borough under their belt, Stoneycroft FC surpassed last year’s points total with still over half the league programme to complete. The fact they were able to record clean sheets in these fixtures was an added bonus, with the Croft going nap against Liver Academy to win 5-0. The South Sefton game was more of a tussle with both sides evenly matched but overall Croft edged it and were able to complete the double over their opponents. Joe Daley began the scoring when he cut in from the left and hit and unstoppable shot past the more than capable visiting keeper. Just before half-time Danny Raggett doubled the scoring from the spot after Eddie Baker had been impeded when on track for goal. Despite Sefton’s best efforts, they were unable to further penetrate the home defence and the second half
remained goalless. Between these games, Stoneycroft were unfortunate to go down 2-1 to Lower Breck when they visited Walton Hall Park. This was a game of chances taken and chances missed with Lower Breck being the more clinical of the two sides with the Croft ruing their failure in front of goal. Despite this setback manger Ross Kirkpatrick was more than happy with the progress the club was making. However he could not have foreseen the predicament he would have to face a week later when his side travelled to Croxteth to take on Red Rum with five of the players from the starting line-up against South Sefton missing, including the two goal scorers. At this level you can’t afford to lose that many quality players without it having an adverse effect. Taking nothing away from the team that played, but it provided a mountain for us to climb and we just could not do it on the day” he said
after his side’s heavy defeat - “but we carry on” was his clarion call. Slightly reinforced, they travelled to league leaders Waterloo Dock midweek and despite taking the lead in a much-improved display they once again failed to capitalise on opportunities and suffered the same fate as the week before. To complete perhaps the hardest challenge the fixture list could present, they visited champions APH four days later and went down to their third defeat in a row. They will be happy to have got these games out of the way there are clearly two sub-divisions within the division and the Maiden Lane crew will be seeking to head or be near the top of the pack that make up the lower of those subdivisions. However, there are no easy games and a tighter defence together with the ability to seize goalscoring opportunities will be required if that ambition is to be realised.

SOUTH STAY ON COURSE By Jim Stanway SOUTH Liverpool FC remain unbeaten at the top of the West Cheshire League first division table despite unexpectedly dropping two points in a goalless home draw with bottom of the table Ashville. However, South produced an excellent series of results following elimination from the Liverpool County FA Challenge Cup to Hale on penalties, resulting in manager Martin Ryman receiving the Manager of the Month award for October. Five straight wins in the league have now resulted in a 7-point lead in the league title race although the team’s main rivals, Cammell Lairds Reserves, do have two games in hand. Star striker Cameron Dalton has hit form with a hat-trick in a 4-2 win at Chester Nomads, 4 goals in a 5-1 win at Southport Trinity and singles in a 2-1 win at Hale and a 5-0 win against Ashville in the league cup. The team also defeated an under-strength Blacon Youth Club 4-0 with goals from Alex Woodcock (his 12th of the season), Gary Dunning and two from Nick Walker. The reserves have lost their lead in the third division to main rivals Kirkby Town Railway but have progressed to the quarter finals of the Liverpool County FA Junior Cup with a 4-2 win after extra time against Speke-based Red and Blue, with goals from Francis Evans, Adam Shelton, Ryan McMahon and Chris Williamson, and a 3-1 win against Widnes-based Halton Borough with goals from Ryan McMahon (2) and Neil Roach. The youth team have increased their lead in the youth division with an excellent 2-0 win over Chester Nomads with goals from Craig Byrne and David Mee while there was also a 4-4 draw against West Kirby, with striker Alex Griffiths notching a hat-trick, and a 6-2 win at Belfry whilst main rivals Custy’s have dropped several points including a 5-5 draw with Newton.
FULWOOD IN SEVENTH HEAVEN By Ian Wignell FULWOOD Arms FC started the month of October with a tight fought 1-0 win over Hunting Lodge Athletic; it took a moment of brilliance from winger Layton Reynolds who scored with a magical side kick flying volley. Next up was Woolton FC, who had already beaten Fulwood Arms earlier on in season; Fulwood managed to sail into a 3-0 first-half lead, only to be pinned back to 3-2 late on in the game, with Fulwood hanging on for a 3-2 home win. Next up was a home tie against St Helens Town which saw Fulwood break their all-time scoring record by smashing in 7 goals; the game started rather slowly, with Benjamin Foster scoring the only goal of the first half, but soon into the second half Fulwood were running
riot and it wasn’t long before goals flew in from Lawrence, Kenny, Fletcher and two from Layton Reynolds, Fulwood manager Wignell was ecstatic at the 7-0 result at full time. Fulwood then faced league leaders Warner Youth, who had won every single game so far this season, and Fulwood showed how much they have improved as a team as they gave Warner their hardest game of the season. Warner went 2-0 up in the first half but the game had plenty of drama with Fulwood’s Craig Ramsey hitting the inside of the bar with a 40 yard volley, keeper Joe Blackburn saving a penalty and Graeme Kenny missing a penalty at the other end. The game finished 2-0 and brought Fulwood’s 5game unbeaten run to a sad end.
