Long ago Britain was covered by forests creating magical landscapes penetrated by lonely tracks linking towns and villages. This was the legendary land of Robin Hood.
The whispering woods were charmed places, seemingly serene but where violence and death could suddenly strike. Even kings were not immune as William II, a red-headed tyrant, discovered at his cost – shot dead by an ar-
row while hunting. The laws of cruel kings drove people to seek refuge in the greenwood where the only habitations were occasional charcoalburner’s hovels. Until Saxon times bears lumbered through the trees and

beavers dammed streams. Wolves were wiped out by royal decree. Toxteth Park was a royal hunting forest, surrounded by a fence and teeming with deer and wild boar. As the population grew the trees were felled. The land needed to be farmed to feed England’s growing communities. Wood was required for houses and fuel. Slowly the forests dwindled and the roads and lanes multiplied. Villages were settled and some grew into towns and towns into cities. Liverpool started as a manor farm on the banks of the Mersey, spreading out to engulf villages that were far older. The hunger for firstclass timber to build warships saw the end of the remaining native forests. Shipwrights demanded oak to build the n e w n a v y. H u g e amounts were needed – all the prime oaks in one county were felled to build a single galleon. The felling of the ancient oaks reached a high point in the time of Elizabeth I when England was threat-

In Calderstones Park visitors get some idea of the atmosphere of the forests that once covered the land. The Allerton Oak (pictured) has been a source of wonder for countless generations after somehow escaping the axe. Other trees are mere saplings compared to its impressive presence. Oaks can thrive despite all manner of infestations and damage. Its huge branches are supported by iron poles, the trunk hollow and crumbling – yet it lives on and on.
It is said to be over 1,000 years old and may have survived felling because even 500 years ago its trunk was so split and battered it would not have provided a single plank.

Bellerive from all across Liverpool and travel has recently been made easier as school buses pick up and drop off pupils along four routes. (See website for details: www.bellerivefcj.org). Established since 1844, it is sited adjacent to the pleasant Sefton and Princes Parks. Former pupils enjoy success at all levels and a number have gone on to make names for themselves in an array
of careers, from the civil service to medicine, law and engineering. Improvements to facilities are always ongoing: in 2012 a fantastic new hall was added and this year a new building containing labs and classrooms was completed in May. Future goals include further building improvements and even more outstanding grades in inspections – all well within
the school’s reach. Come along to an Open Evening on July 9th or October 1st to discover more about Bellerive and why it is a popular choice. One new Year 7 girl stated: “I settled in really quickly because everyone was really nice and friendly. Bellerive is not like any other school: it is unique. We don’t see it as a school. We see it as a family.”

Orange Butterfly is her publishing debut ORANGE BUTTERFLY is the story of Amy Simmonds and her seemingly perfect life. Amelia has a mother who dotes on her, a father whose love for her knows no bounds and the love of her childhood friend
Nicholas. She also has a beautiful and ambitious sister who is full of hate and indignation. Set in Birmingham, England, the story takes a sudden twist when a domestic accident lands Amy in hospital and in a coma. Several months later, she wakes up to a new life. One in which all the layers of lies and deceit in Amy’s life have been stripped away. In the dark times that follow, she searches for light; the kind only truth brings. This search leads Amy back to the place it all began; the colourful city of Port Harcourt, Nigeria. Published by Authorhouse (April 2013): www.authorhouse.co.uk

Suddenly a man burst out of a bush, running and waving his arms. He shouted hoarsely: “Stop this at once – leave them alone”. Before the gardeners could react the intruder had snatched their boxes of slug pellets and vanished into the shrubbery. At home he slumped into his favourite chair and told his long-suffering wife about this latest escapade. Bertram Stone was a man who loved slugs. He had taken it upon himself to protect his beloved gastropods by direct action, setting up the Slug Protection Society to achieve his aims. Although the group had a manifesto and code of conduct he had not succeeded in recruiting any other members. Alice was sympathetic and supportive, of course, but had not signed up. It was their project counting the sea shells in Red Wharf Bay that had been the catalyst. “What does it all mean?” he had asked himself after spending interminable hours poring over half an acre of sand. DO YOU HAVE TIME TO HELP, LADIES? You may not have heard of Soroptimist International but the local club has been established for over 86 years! This vibrant, dynamic organisation is made up of women who not only value the opportunity to make a difference but also value the fun, friendship and support found within the Liverpool club.
Saturdays 9.45am and 11am
Liverpool members can choose to raise funds or give service in five wide focus areas and can make a real difference in changing lives. Along the way, they develop lifelong friends and networks at home and abroad. Funds are currently being raised for the South Liverpool Domestic Abuse Service and MAST (Merseyside Association for Sail Training). The club has enjoyed supporting the National Deaf
Children’s Society and the Liverpool Signing Choir - a signing and singing choir for young children, many of whom are deaf. Last year we were delighted help them get to London and ‘Imagine’ at the Olympic closing ceremony! There are many ongoing ventures, including supporting a local Food Bank, support for victims of domestic violence and International Water Aid. New members are always welcome:

WALK 4 LIFE – RAISING FUNDS FOR THE LINDA McCARTNEY CENTRE We w e re re a l l y touched by an email we received from LINK readerCathy Clements, who tells us her own story: “My name is Cathy Clements. I am 55 years old, and I have 4 sons and 3 grandchildren. In March 2011, I joined the Liverpool Catholic Ramblers Association (LCRA) and in August 2012 I was lucky enough to travel to Zakopane in Poland where I achieved one of the most amazing things of my life: I managed to walk up a mountain called Kaspowry Wierch which is about 6500 feet high. I had a victory photograph done at the summit and felt totally exhilarated. Less than a month later, I went for a routine
mammogram and it was discovered that I had a malignant tumour in my left breast. I have never known such fear and terror and am still in shock at the way this has happened. I had to have a lumpectomy and radiotherapy at the Clatterbridge Cancer Centre in Fazakerley. I can’t thank the staff enough for the care I received and I will never forget the wonderful people I have met along the way. “Now it’s time to give something back I approached my friends at the LCRA about the possibility of raising funds for the Linda McCartney Centre and they agreed to me arranging a sponsored walk up Snowdon on June 23rd. We are still in the planning stages but are hoping to take
! " a couple of coach loads. It is advertised on our Facebook site (LCRA Open Group), on the Linda McCartney site and on http://www.rlbuht.workwithus.org/ You don’t have to be a member of the Ramblers to join in, just

someone who wants to take part and be willing to raise sponsorship and/or to sponsor us. We will be leaving from outside the Museum (back of St. Georges Hall) at 9am. All are really welcome but I would advise people to check our Facebook page for details just in case anything changes. I hope readers of The LINK decide to join us, or that they may be kind enough to sponsor us. Cancer affects everyone and we need the technology to be ready for it and all the money we raise will go to the new unit which is due to open in the future.

HEALTHY HINTS AND TIPS by Paul Coshott
FIVE BASIC RULES OF NUTRITION FOR OPTIMUM HEALTH • Eat foods that are as natural as possible, i.e. whole, unrefined and unadulterated • Eat some raw or ‘living’ foods. If cooking is required try not to over-cook, as it will destroy the nutrients • Drink plenty of water • Don’t be too rigid, whatever your diet. Once in a while, have that piece of cake or ice cream, so you’re not continually craving a treat. Give yourself a break. • Try to stop eating before you are completely full PAUL COSHOTT - PERSONAL TRAINING CHARGES: Off-peak charge Mon-Fri, 10am to 4pm; £27 Peak charge: Mon- Fri, 8am to 10am and 6pm to 9pm; £32. In many countries around the world, including Britain, America, Canada and much of Asia, Father’s Day is celebrated on the 3rd Sunday in June, which this year falls on Sunday 16th June. Like many other formal celebration days, “Father’s Day”, as we now know it, was started in the United States, when a lady named Sonora Smart Dodd was so touched by a Mother’s Day sermon she heard in 1909 that she decided to dedicate a special day to her own dad, William. The first Father’s Day was celebrated on June 19th 1910, William’s birthday, and such a good idea was bound to catch on as people around the world wished to honour the devotion and love of their own fathers. So make 167th June really special for you and your dad! Whether it’s a card, present, or just some time spent together, have a lovely day. If you find yourself stuck for gift ideas, why not have a look here in The LINK. You may want to treat Dad to a lovely meal at one of the restaurants advertised or he may enjoy a great day out on a wonderful steam train journey through the countryside. Have a great Father’s Day and best wishes to dads everywhere from all of us at The LINK.

ALDER FC CUP FINAL GLORY by Peter Harrison The first team crowned the end to a great season by beating Collegiate 2-0 in the final of the Roy Wade Cup. In a match played at Ford Motors ground in Cronton, the uneven playing surface initially proved a leveller for both teams. Alder started the stronger side and Antony Wong played a great ball through for Paul O’Hare who was unlucky with his effort. Alder were then unlucky to have a penalty appeal dismissed when Antony Wong appeared to be fouled in the area after a searching run. Full backs Mick Roberts and Gary Tynan were pushing up strongly on the flanks. The breakthrough came in the 20th minute when Jobo seemed to be chasing a lost cause down the left flank. He managed to resist two challenges and cut inside with his low shot beating the Collegiate keeper to open the scoring. Collegiate, with Tom Owens prominent in midfield, then took the game to Alder and a succession of corners saw them skim the crossbar. The Alder centre back pairing of John Boardman and John Elias were immense down the middle as all efforts were thwarted. When called upon Scott was looking a safe pair of hands in goal and Joe Reynolds was holding the central midfield together with a strong performance. The second half again saw a period of Alder pressure, much to the delight of their travelling fans who were encamped in the bar and stand. Timmy Naylor and Keith were making probing runs down the wing but with 20 minutes left the game was still in the balance. Guy came on as substitute to provide further problems up front and the last 15 minutes saw the introduction of Antony Barnes. The game was won with 5 minby the players in a hard-fought campaign that turned into a remarkable achievement. Team manager, Gary Heaney, declared “Obviously with it being our first season we’re delighted to have won promotion”. Although this was a team success there were individual performances worthy of note: John Marshall netted twenty-two times from his midfield slot and this was matched by forward Gary Hughes, turning them into an amazingly prolific goal scoring duo. Billy Mangan turned out in a variety of positions and put in sterling per-
formances and never let the team down. All at the club were particularly pleased that the Vets had been able to move up to the top tier, given that it was the team’s first year in existence, and has proved to be the bright spot of the season. Club Chairman Kenny Morrison commented: “The Vets’ performance has been outstanding and they should be congratulated on their achievement. I am delighted for them. I believe it vindicates our decision to start a Vets side and I hope their success continues and spreads to our other teams”.

SOUTH GO UP AS CHAMPIONS! by Jim Stanway
To advertise see page TWO Redgate Rovers after extra-time. South started the final in fine style and were 2-0 up after half an hour with goals from Francis Evans and Gerard Forde. An Evans header put them 3-2 up with minutes to go but they were unable to hold out to the final whistle. And Redgate proved too strong in extra time. The team can be
proud of their efforts, however. The youth team’s season ended in anti-climax and controversy: having achieved a goalless draw against Bootle to eliminate their opponents from the title race, a 1-1 draw with their other rivals Gateacre appeared to have clinched the league title. However, a failure to fulfil an earlier fixture resulted in a 3-
point deduction and Gateacre were back in the race. A missed penalty in a 1-0 defeat to Gateacre left the opposition needing to win both their final two games to win the league and at the time of writing one of their opponents, Custys, have failed to fulfil the fixture and the league have awarded Gateacre three points with an away match at Vauxhalls to play.

Alex Woodcock and a hat-trick f ro m C a m e ro n Dalton added to goals from Matt Lowe and Kevin Martin to complete the rout. South’s dynamic strikers, Woodcock and Dalton, scored 74 goals between them, the former scoring 38 goals and the latter 36 - a phenomenal effort from the pair and a crucial element of South’s title win. Indeed, after losing 2-1 to AFC Bebington Athletic at the beginning of April (an incredible game in which Bebington scored two penalties but had no shots on target in the whole match!), South won their last eight league matches to ease clear of all their rivals. In that
period, the team scored 36 goals including an 8-0 thrashing of bottom club Mersey Royal and the team made history by becoming the first club to win the 3rd and 2nd divisions in successive seasons, and scored a mouth-watering 111 goals in 30 league games. The reserve team finished a creditable sixth in the 3rd Division of the West Cheshire League, in their first season in the league, and might have done better if their leading scorer Mitchell McNally had not had two lengthy spells out of action through injury. They reached the final of the divisional cup and in an exciting match at Cammell Laird they lost 5-3 to league champions
