POOR RELATIONS

By Stephen Guy

THEY often survive when larger, more important, buildings and structures have long disappeared – reminders of lost landscapes and people. Things like stable blocks, outhouses and garden stores were the poor relations of big houses. They were workaday buildings which hosted vital services for the smooth running of estates. The most common survivors are entrance lodges. There was a wave of mass destruction after the First World War when large and small country estates were broken up. Death and taxes took their toll but often smaller buildings survived. Some, known as follies, were constructed to enhance landscapes created around stately homes. Roads and sometimes whole villages were moved so views would not be spoilt. Big houses employed large numbers of staff who lived on the premises. Buildings such as laundries were often constructed well

away from the main residence. Members of the family did not want to see their linen ÁXWWHULQJ RQ ZDVKLQJ OLQHV *UHHQKRXVHV PD\ KDYH EHHQ visible but potting sheds and stores were kept out of sight. Calderstones is one of several surviving former country estates in south Liverpool, long since transformed into public parks. Much survives intact including the mansion house, stables and other outbuildings. Neighbouring Harthill, however, was demolished in 1937 and later many of the estate buildings. Although Druids Cross was demolished in the 1970s, some outbuildings and a lodge survive. Sudley House features a late Victorian stable block with hayloft and coachman’s accommodation. Dry rot was often used as an excuse to demolish redundant mansions when the owners – particularly Liverpool Corporation – did not have the time, money or inclination to save them. Dry rot is often found in old buildings and can be eradicated. Harthill and Childwall Hall are among Liverpool’s lost buildings torn down after dry rot was discovered. Another was Allerton Tower, perhaps the most impressive. It was designed by Harvey Lonsdale Elmes, WKH \RXQJ JHQLXV ZKR DOVR FUHDWHG 6W *HRUJH·V +DOO DQG Liverpool Collegiate. Despite widespread protests, Allerton Tower was ÁDWWHQHG LQ WKH V EXW PRVW RI WKH RXWEXLOGLQJV including the orangery and stables survive. Another survivor is a mysterious circular structure (pictured) partly concealed under an earth mound. It may have incorporated an ice house or garden store. Accessed through a short tunnel, the interior is open to the elements. ADVERTISING ANNOUNCEMENT

Medical Negligence: What can go Wrong? Our work in the Gregory Abrams Davidson Medical Negligence department is very topical at the moment. We find that issues within the NHS are constantly in the news. Every day there appears to be another story about staff shortages and cuts.

“Private hospitals lack facilities to deal with emergencies”. They reported on a study that found that between 2010 and 2014 800 patients, including those referred by the NHS, died unexpectedly in private hospitals.

This undoubtedly leads to failures in the care provided.

Our work is challenging but often very rewarding. Each case is very different with its own unique set of facts which touches the family in so many different ways. Our range of work is extremely diverse and we never know what the next case may bring.

Sadly we will all be aware of scandals such as the Staffordshire Hospital scandal where concerns regarding poor care and high mortality rates amongst patients were highlighted and the Morecambe Bay scandal which reported deaths of mothers and babies. Of course, it is not only NHS failures that result in injury. We also deal with victims within the private healthcare system. They are not immune to making mistakes. The private healthcare system have had to deal with their own scandals. Wife of footballer Colin Hendry died of meningitis after undergoing liposuction in a private hospital. The mother of four suffered nine punctures to her bowel during the “routine” surgery and sadly died. Just last year the Independent newspaper reported that

We are passionate about the work we do and often forge close working relationships with our clients. Litigation is such a daunting process, but even more so when you or a family member has been the victim of negligent medical treatment. Having the right Solicitor to guide and support you is a key aspect to the process in seeking recompense. On occasions the victims or the family will approach us late in the day, close to the 3 year time limit for bringing a claim. This is far from ideal and brings with it its own set of challenges, however, we will act quickly where possible to do what we

can to help the victim or the family to bring a claim before the time limit expires. One thing a lot of clients don’t realise and they can find extremely frustrating (as do we) is that even if you can prove that the care provided by the clinicians has been below standard this does not always result in a successful outcome. It is still necessary to prove that the poor standard of care has resulted in injury. This can be difficult. We also deal with defective medical device claims (Product Liability). We all expect medical devices to be safe. We expect that they have undergone rigorous testing and that appropriate warnings will be given regarding the safety and efficacy of the product or any risk involved with it. Often they are but in rare cases the manufacturer lets the patient down or in some cases the surgeon will fail to give the appropriate advice and warnings regarding the risks or long-term results. This can have catastrophic consequences for the patient. We are presently representing over 100 clients that have been affected by the DePuy metal on

metal hips, both ASR and Pinnacle metal on metal hip devices. Sadly, all of our clients have had to undergo a revision of their hip replacement operation years earlier than expected. In many cases the client has been left with pain, tissue and muscle damage in the hip joint. A Group Litigation Order was made at the High Court in London on 31st July 2014 in respect of the Pinnacle metal on metal hip claims. The register closed to new applicants as recently as the 12th February 2016. We are one of 5 lead solicitors in the country to lead the litigation In the Pinnacle metal on metal hip claims, something we are proud of. The Department is based at the Penny Lane office, however, we

also operate out of our London office. Should you or a family member be a victim of medical negligence please do not hesitate to contact us.

Bedtime reading: Why it matters... IT IS perhaps the greatest image of childhood adventure: the small child staying up late, eagerly waiting for Mum or Dad to tuck them in and read a couple of pages from their favourite book. Maybe in your home this is a regular occurrence each night, or maybe you just QHYHU ÀQG WKH WLPH IRU LW We are here to tell you that those minutes you spend with your child, right before they drift off, are of crucial importance to shaping their relationship with the written word; if a passion for reading stories is instilled from a young age this will remain throughout their school years (and beyond) and will result in major developments in words, the use of grammar and punctuation, and a strengthened imagination. However, due to busy work / home schedules nowadays, fewer children are enjoying the tradition of

a bedtime story: a survey by Scholastic1 revealed how most parents stop reading to their children when they are FRQĂ€GHQW WKH\ FDQ GR VR E\ themselves, despite the fact that children miss the special time they get to spend with their parents each night. 6KRXOG WKH Ă€UVW FRQWDFW children have with reading be in the classroom, they will perceive it as a chore and not something to enjoy. Even children scoring high in literacy tests can do well in standardised testing without truly enjoying the DFWLYLW\ DQG EHQHĂ€WLQJ IURP it at a deeper level. With parenthood comes a duty so important to shaping the mind of your child, and that is to ensure time is available each evening to “rechargeâ€? your child’s brain with a good book. Begin with a picture book, give characters different voices, but most importantly ask your child questions

about what you are reading WKDW ZLOO HQFRXUDJH UHà HFWLRQ upon the words and stories they have enjoyed. As they become older, progress on to more complex books – perhaps

try adventure and mystery novels (nothing too frightening, you want them to be able to sleep). A good book transports your child into a magical world within their mind.

Classics are often the best source to consider: whether that is through the wardrobe to Narnia, or an adventure with the famous hobbit Bilbo Baggins or the wizard Harry Potter, these stories will

have your child wanting to know what happens next and pleading for one more page. If this is the case and you see your child starting to read on his / her own, encourage it and sit by their side supporting their excitement. Discuss each chapter EHIRUH EHG UHĂ HFWLQJ XSRQ the story and explaining anything they do not understand. The purpose of this is to assure them that reading is far more than exams and school comprehensions, it seamlessly teaches them new things, builds up their YRFDEXODU\ VRPHWKLQJ Ă€HUFH and allows them to form their own opinions and back them accordingly. With one simple sentence you can send your child off on a wonderful journey every night and it all starts with “Once upon a timeâ€?. 1 http://www.scholastic. co.uk/readingreport

Celebrities gather for a great cause

HI GUYS and welcome to my May column of The Link. April has been one busy month on the social scene! I attended the fabulous James Bulger Charity Ball, which I am proud to say I am an ambassador for, at the Crowne Plaza. The James Bulger Memorial Trust was set up by James’ mother Denise Fergus whose son James was so tragically abducted and murdered at the age of 3. The charity provides free holidays and travel to children and families who have suffered from crime, hatred or bullying. Some of the celebs supporting the event were Danielle Lloyd, Celebrity Big Brother winner James Hill, Amanda Harrington and Tina Malone. Performing on the night were X Factor Stars Jake Quickenden and Christopher Maloney. The event raised over £28,000, a fantastic amount and will go on to help and support many families. For the event I wore this ‘Rare’ Black Multi Cross Strap Prom Dress. I got so many lovely compliments and nobody believed it was

only £55. It actually felt like it should have been at least double the price!! The dress fabric felt so expensive and ÀWWHG UHDOO\ QLFHO\ ¶5DUH· LV an online fashion boutique that specialises in dresses/ RXWÀWV IRU VSHFLDO RFFDVLRQV and nights out. Starting to plan your wedding? Don’t stress By Ashleigh Panther

Continued from page 26 If you follow my social media pages many of you will know that myself, Amanda Harrington, Tina Malone, Charlotte Dawson, Mark Byron, Ray Quinn and Derry Mensa were all at The Hilton in Liverpool to judge Little Miss/Mr Liverpool for LMI. The day was jam packed with entertainment from the fabulous MD Productions, Girl Talk, Imsod, Rosalie Gavin and Liam Halewood. Fifty models took part in the event, from baby to teen categories, over two catwalk rounds, one being an eco round where all the PRGHOV PDGH WKHLU RZQ RXWĂ€ WV RXW RI UHF\FOHG materials! All models received a medal for taking part and over 30 trophies were given out. The overall winner was Erin Caine who was in the mini age group (ages 8-12). Erin walked away with a ÂŁ1,000 cash prize and is now working with LMI to build her online model portfolio. Erin’s mum, Suzanne, said: “Thanks to everyone for making my little girl believe in herself, I still can’t believe she has won.â€? The event’s chosen charity was the James Bulger Memorial Trust Charity which, Liz the director of LMI, is also an ambassador for. All the children together raised ÂŁ5381.20, which was absolutely fantastic. For this I wore this knitted faux leather detail jumpsuit from MissGuided (www. missguided.co.uk). I had so many people ask where this jumpsuit was from and when I said it was only ÂŁ40 they were totally taken aback! They thought it was going to have been really expensive. IF THEY’VE popped the question and now the reality has set in on how much you’ve got to do, don’t panic! I didn’t ask about bringing our own food in!’ or ‘How long can we play music for?!’ So, whether you get FAQs from brides on the internet or come up with your own set of questions that will settle your mind,

Sefton Ladies’ enjoy the end of season dinner at Liverpool Cricket Club.

Hockey club let their hair down By Chris Thomas

AFTER a long hard season Liverpool Sefton Hockey Club held their Annual General Meeting and end of season dinner at Liverpool Cricket Club. This is one of the most eagerly anticipated social events of the year and this year was no exception. As ever, this provided the opportunity for members to ERWK UHà HFW RQ WKH VHDVRQ that has gone by and look forward to the year ahead. Some may have also taken the well-earned chance to over indulge on the food and drink available on the night‌!

Highlights of the evening included the awarding of the Ralf Owen Trophy to Peter Kenyon for his outstanding service to the club and the Golden Whistle to Andy McCarroll for the time and effort he has put into umpiring. Members generously doQDWHG UDIĂ H SUL]HV DQG PDQ\ attendees went home with a SUL]H XQGHU WKHLU DUP Special mention should also go to Hockey for Heroes who donated hockey sticks for an auction and was a reminder of the great work Carl Woods and his team do for our injured and fallen armed forces personnel.

Although results may not have gone the way all teams wanted this season, the night was a reminder of why people participate in team sport.
