Philharmonic Hall, Liverpool: December 28th & 29th 2016

Ken Dodd celebrates 25 years of festive fun and happiness Ken says: “Nothing fills me with more happiness than being at home in Liverpool for a traditional Christmas and New Year with lots of laughter, singing and the possibility of a seasonal sprinkling of snow! “My show will be a true celebration of what makes Britain Great, and in the Spirit of Optimism we will show that happiness is what makes us winners in the face of those who are constantly promoting negativity and gloom. “Come to my Happiness Show at Liverpool’s Philharmonic Hall and help me accept the challenge that we can do it by promoting all that is best in the British Spirit with our wonderful British humour and variety at the very top of the bill. “By jove! It’s my 25th Anniversary Year of dispensing festive tickle-tonic at Liverpool’s wonderful Philharmonic Hall with a fun-filled Variety Show for all the family to enjoy. It’s that magical time of year when families come together to

enjoy the simple things in life, like togetherness, kindness, sharing and above all else, being happy. It’s an extra-special time of year when we all exchange gifts and good wishes, and happiness is to the very forefront of our

thoughts. “To me, the Festive Season is about the beautiful aroma of home cooking and waking up with happy thoughts and contentment as we wish a fond farewell to the old year before celebrating the

arrival of yet another new one! “We all wonder where the last 12 months have gone while hearing everyone saying ‘it’ll soon be here again! In my mind, every day is Christmas!! It’s why I’m a sucker for that wonderful Festive feeling of plumptiousness and goodwill that I love to generate through my ‘Happiness Show’ all year long, finishing with these two days back home in Liverpool. “So come and join me at the Philharmonic Hall on December 28th and 29th and enjoy my Happiness Show and we will laugh our way through yet another Festive Season. “I love nothing better than slaving over a hot audience because entertaining gives me a true feeling of plumptiousness. I’m fizzing like a bottle of champagne with the cork out! Discovering I could make people laugh was like being kissed by an angel. Happy Ticklemas to one and all!

JOB OPPORTUNITY

Rachel Riley supports STEM day at Merchant Taylors’ Girls’ School MERCHANT Taylors’ Girls’ School were delighted to welcome Countdown’s Rachel Riley for a ‘STEM-sational’ event designed to encourage young women to study science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) based subjects. Rachel, who studied maths at Oxford, spoke to hundreds girls from 11 schools around the region including pupils from Broadgreen International. She began by dispelling a few maths myths. ‘There’s no such thing as a maths brain. You just need to work hard & practice. I had to relearn my times tables by redoing them whilst listening to the countdown clock.’ Attendees wanted to know about her own experiences. ‘Me? I’m inspired by a project that wants to send nano spaceships to the next star system. My favourite things are applied maths & studying time travel and my craziest showbiz story was when I met Stephen Hawking, he’s a bit cool! I love doing things that scare me but challenging myself & making it happen!’ She was joined by two of the UK’s leading female scientists Dr Anna Slater and Dr Melanie Windridge. Anna, who works at Liverpool University in the Chemistry Department, has a PhD in Supramolecular Chemistry. Her research has resulted in her being awarded the Royal Society-EPSRC Dorothy Hodgkin Fellowship and she has also been shortlisted for the 2016 Women of the Future

Awards. Dr Melanie Windridge, who has a Doctorate from Imperial College London, is an expert in the aurora and in fusion energy. She likes to combine her scientific knowledge and experience with her love of adventure to promote a better understanding of Science. She has also appeared on TV in science shows and written two books. The event was organised by Merchants’ Physics Teacher, Mrs Jennie Lynch, in conjunction with the team behind The Big Bang North West, All About STEM. As well listening to the inspirational guest speakers the girls were given the opportunity to participate in a number of engineering and maths based workshops. Leading Universities and Companies were also on hand to provide an insight into potential career paths. Mrs Lynch envisaged a programme that would motivate girls to consider the many opportunities open to those who study STEM based subjects and judging by the responses of the participants she certainly achieved that and much more.

ADVERTISING ANNOUNCEMENT

Buying or Selling a Property? This month we meet Harry Friend, Residential Property Expert and Partner at GAD LLP Solicitors. What is most important to clients buying or selling a home? Getting everything done swiftly and accurately. Buying or selling a home can be very stressful, we always try to anticipate anything likely to delay the transaction and work to a plan that reduces and avoids potential hold ups. Clients are regularly updated throughout the sale or purchase. How does this help clients? By saving the client additional time and expense. Every sale or purchase is different in some way, but speed and efficiency are vital to everyone. It may be the purchaser has secured a fantastic deal or a property in great demand for example. The sale is vulnerable until we’ve exchanged contracts. For clients selling a property, purchasers can pull out at any time up to exchange of contracts. Speed and efficiency gives the client a significant advantage to achieve an early completion. Why do clients choose GAD? We’ve over 40 years’ residential property experience at GAD. Buying or selling a house is one of the biggest decisions people face, often life changing. Trust has a significant

role in selecting a firm and can only be earned. Many of our clients have bought and sold their homes several times with us. They recommend us to their friends. We never take anything for granted. We work very hard to ensure that our service is always excellent. We ask all our clients for feedback, many provide us with testimonials which we publish on our website. Last year 91% of our clients thought our service was either excellent or good. What are the benefits of having more than one office in Liverpool? Even with the advance of technology, many clients prefer to come into the office. Clients find having an office close to either home or work very convenient. It can also save time if you use a solicitor with sound local knowledge of the area. There are often interesting local nuances, for example many of the roads around Sefton Park are unadopted, which can cause delays for an out of town solicitor or conveyancing firm. It also saves time by avoiding documents going to and fro in the post. We have on occasion exchanged contracts in hours when required, being local really can help.

How much does it cost to buy or sell your home at GAD? We are always competitive and provide a written estimate of all known costs and disbursements beforehand. This ensures that clients can budget effectively and there’s no nasty surprises down the line.

busy also, I suspect due to low interest rates and improving equity. We’re also the appointed solicitor at one of the leading North West property auctions. We’ve a really great team at GAD with wide ranging experience and expertise

How has Brexit impacted upon your business? We’ve not seen anything differ too greatly since June’s vote to leave. Interest rates are still very low, consumer confidence is high as are employment levels. The market is still very buoyant and there’s a real appetite for property. Like most business there are seasonal variances. But unlike many parts of Europe, the majority of UK residents are homeowners. What other property services does your firm offer? We’ve a wide range of services relating to residential property. Enfranchisement (buying your flats freehold) is popular. We’ve a buy to let expert in the property team. He’s invaluable at the moment on account of the changing shape of the buy to let model. Re-mortgages have been

Mahogany Mary By Anton Valdemart

LOUISA loved riding – it was her passion and joy to thunder off over the countryside on her favourite mount, Steeplejack. The coast around Oglet was excellent riding country, with its low hedges and sloping fields swept by breezes off the Mersey. Louisa was the 19-yearold daughter of Colonel Parkinson of Oglet Hall, a former cavalry officer who had seen service in many campaigns. The Great War had ended a few years before and Louisa was one of the Bright Young Things bringing a breath of fresh air after the years of gloom. They had first come across the carved wooden figure outside Nay’s tack shop where the Parkinsons bought their riding gear. The model of a young girl in riding cap and jodhpurs stood with legs crossed holding a riding crop, enticing customers. Louisa was about 10 when she first saw the advertising sign and instantly called her

STRANGE TALES – By Anton Valdemart

Mahogany Mary. She would always give the mannequin a hug before entering the shop. “I’m sure Miss Louisa thinks she’s a real live horse rider just like herself,” said Nay to the Colonel.. Louisa was given a riding outfit just like Mary’s on her 11th birthday. “She’s my twin,” she said happily. Louisa soon towered over Mary but still gave the figure a hug when visiting the shop. It was a dreary, windswept day when Louisa set out on her morning ride. Steeplechase, normally easy to handle, was strangely nervous in the blustery wind. Horse and rider thundered along the shore, galloping through the mud and dodging branches and other flotsam. Louisa turned

Steeplechase’s head inland and they cantered over a hillock into Withers Dell. Steeplechase could normally handle the steep descent but suddenly whinnied and rolled down the slope. Louisa was thrown clear but was knocked unconscious on the trunk of an old hawthorn tree. “She’s strong but has suffered a very nasty concussion,” said the doctor as she lay in a deep sleep at Oglet Hall. “It’s a question of time – all we can do is hope that she recovers naturally. The next 48 hours is crucial,” added the medic to her distraught father. There was a knock on the door. Nay stood with a large bundle in his arms. “I came when I heard the news. I just knew this would help,” he said, putting the

bundle down gently on the hall floor. It was Mahogany Mary. The colonel nodded and carried the effigy up to his daughter’s room, tears welling up in his eyes. He and Mary kept vigil through the night next to Louisa’s bed. The following morning, just as the church clock struck, Louisa opened her eyes and smiled first at her father, then Mary. She reached out her arms and they knew all was well. With a cracking sound, Mahogany Mary split down the middle and fell apart. It was as if all her strength had been used restoring Louisa to health.

Ice Festival returns LIVERPOOL’S fabulous Ice Festival is on its way back to get everyone in the Christmas spirit this year … and with an even more stunning location than ever before. The festival, which runs from November 11 to January 3, is moving to a new home on the city’s iconic waterfront for 2016. That means it will be perfectly placed for a day of festive family fun for anyone wanting to combine a visit with a city centre shopping trip. The new site will transform the waterfront at the Pier Head, fitting in even more Christmassy entertainment for all ages

with a great variety of food and drink options too. The centrepiece of the event will be a 600sq metre ice rink where festivalgoers can get their skates on and glide round with the beautiful backdrop of the Three Graces. The rink is undercover so whatever the weather, visitors will be able to show off their ice skills. Whether they’re absolute beginners needing a little help from the hand rail, or experts taking an impressive spin, the large rink will be the ideal place to practice some ice moves. And the thrills don’t end there – they can keep the fun going by having a go on a

few of the exhilarating rides including the 45-metre real ice slide. After all that exertion, they can take a well-earned rest by heading to one of the many on-site food outlets, bars and cafes. Guest DJs will be mixing up the soundtrack while festival-goers sample delicious hot dishes and drinks, and for those who just can’t get enough of the wintry wonderland there’ll be a Liverpool-themed Ice Bar where they can chill-out and sample some sub-zero cocktails. Part of the One Magical City campaign, the Ice Festival will be open every day from 11am.

Woolton Golf Club’s proposed move to Allerton is off LAST year Woolton Golf Club was approached by the developer, Eric Groves, who put forward a proposal that the club should relocate to Allerton with the move being financed by the sale of the land at Woolton. After lengthy negotiations it has been decided that this is now not now a feasible option and that the club will continue operate on the current site. Golf has been played on the present site for over 115 years, as the oldest established club in South Liverpool it is hoped to continue that legacy for future generations to come. The reasons fizzy drinks are really bad for you

A COUPLE of weeks ago I was recovering from a ‘boozy’ Saturday night out in Chester (which was great!). Me and my mate went for something to eat and had a couple of soft drinks. I was really thirsty and decided to have a pint of a fizzy drink (which is highly unusual for me). In fact I ended up ordering two pints of this stuff, thinking nothing of it. Anyway, just before we were about to leave the restaurant, my mate pointed said to me: “Do you realise you’ve just had a litre of that fizzy drink?”. I said “That’s ok, I was just thirsty and felt like it” but, deep down, I was thinking to myself, “Blimey, he’s right, that’s a lot”. As I was driving home, it got me thinking. So here’s a breakdown of what’s in an ordinary fizzy drink and why it can be bad for you: n Bad teeth Cavities occur when we consume too many sugary and acidic foods and drinks. Fizzy drinks can contain both and ruin the enamel. Dental work is never cheap. You can try and brush your teeth after drinking sodas but the smarter choice is to avoid them and drink water instead. n Risk of diabetes Carbs is another name for sugars. Most foods contain a lot of carbs. Pouring a fizzy drink on top will only make the problem worse. It takes only 20 minutes to increase your blood sugar. It’s extremely hard to treat diabetes

hence why I suggest you should control your intake of sodas. n Poor metabolism Don’t trust commercials where you see a famous sportsperson drinking a fizzy drink after a training session. You will keep piling up pounds merely by drinking a fizzy drink. Sugary sodas slow down your metabolism and your body does not burn fat as efficiently. In future, I’ll be sticking to water! Is your child being bullied? I teach anti-bullying classes for children in the form of Ju Jitsu and Kickboxing. Classes are on from Monday to Friday, 5-6.15pm. Sue and Rita – November cats of the month LEFT behind in a lady’s back garden when she moved out and didn’t come back for her most precious possessions, Sue and Rita sit patiently waiting for their human companion to come and collect them. But she never did come back, and now it almost seems like they’re singing a few lines of the Beatles incredibly moving song Yesterday which has just been played on the radio, as they stare forlornly and longingly out of the window in our small Rescue, waiting, just waiting… “Why did she walk out on us? What did we do? We keep asking ourselves why our lovely human suddenly stopped loving us. “We were so lonely when she went, but then – despite ourselves and even though we felt sick inside – we started to get hungry. And then we got frightened. “What if she never came back? Where would we get food? “And that’s when these Rescue people

Can you give a golden oldie a home STAFF at Dogs Trust Merseyside are looking for a special home for an Old Age Pooch (OAP) who was found abandoned and wandering the streets. Ten-year-old Jack Russell Terrier, Thelma, arrived at the Rehoming Centre in Huyton a few weeks ago and the team have fallen in love with her. stray is heartbreaking. She deserves a second chance to enjoy home comforts and lots of love! “Sometimes older dogs get overlooked, but there are so many advantages to adopting an older dog. “They often need less exercise but are as much fun, they’re used to living in a home and their personality is already shaped so new owners can really understand and appreciate the dog, or dogs, that they are welcoming into their family.” Thelma loves to get out

and about, although the team say it’s sometimes tricky putting her lead on as she’s jumping around so much! She needs to be the only dog in the home and can live with children aged 12 and above. Time to get those jumpsuits out ... THIS last month has been a busy one for me with work events so I have had to look my best and what better way than by being dressed for some of my occasions by the famous Liverpool designer (Mary) Ku Spendlove. Mary has been dressing Liverpool fashionistas for many years now and her designs are just a dream! And the fabrics that she has in her shop are to die for! So many gorgeous lace pieces and sequins perfect for any up and coming Christmas nights out. As Mary makes everything to measure you can be sure that she will recommend something that not only complements your shape but you can add your own personal touch to it as well. I’ve got to say Autumn/Winter are my fav times of the year when it comes to night outs…. that’s because it’s jumpsuit season!!! You can be done all in the one go and you’re not worrying about covering your legs in tan. They are just so easy yet figure flattering at the same time. So this month I have decided to bring to you these four amazing jumpsuits to cover all price budgets…..and also a dress for those of you with fabulous pins! Unfortunately I wasn’t blessed with these so I have to be selective

when getting the thunder thighs out!! Fishnet Mesh Insert Jumpsuit (£35) Strut your stuff in this fishnet number from Missguided. It has a sexy fishnet plunge but is fully covered so if you’re someone who feels the cold (or have forgotten to put your tan on!) then this is the one for you. I paired mine with black shoe boots from Kurt Geiger and a clutch. Lace Cut Out Halter Jumpsuit (£250) I saw this in Ku Spendlove shop and tried it on... I instantly fell in love! I love anything lace. I have done for a number of years now (if you read my blog or column on a regular basis you will have come to realise it’s a bit of an obsession!). There’s just something about it that I find so so sexy but classy at the same time. This can be made in black or cream and can also be altered to a shape that suits your own style and figure. Chiffon Overlay Jumpsuit (£35) I wore this one piece from Missguided and loved it!! It had a classic, bold and fierce feel to it. I got so many lovely

compliments. I teamed this wide leg number with killer heel black shoe boots and a matching statement Channel Clutch. Black Lace Sequin Jumpsuit (£280) This is one that I wore for an awards ceremony by Ku Spendlove. Being a bit of a magpie when I saw lace and sequin in the same fabric, I thought…… this is a bit of me!! This has a lovely Christmas feel because of the sparkle so is great for any Xmas nights out and can also be made in white and gold. Lace Dress With Large Frills (£240) If jumpsuits aren’t your thing and you’re looking for a dress, I wore this Lace Dress with Large Frills. It was a new design that had only just come out, so I was privileged to be the first person to see and wear this. The attention to detail was spot on. I love anything that has a ruffle and is off the shoulder - great if you’re like me and smaller on the top to the bottom. I think it looks very flattering and girly but classy at the same time. So when I spotted both these jumpsuits I instantly fell in love. I tried them on and they both fitted perfectly.

Rebecca Ferguson: From Scouse girl to superwoman

FOR singer Rebecca Ferguson, stepping on to the stage of the Liverpool Phil will be a homecoming with a distinctly positive feel.

After what she admits has been a rollercoaster couple of years, including a very public split from the father of her baby Arabella, 30-year-old

Rebecca is a new woman. A new Superwoman, in fact, if the title of her latest album is anything to go by. The mum-of-three from

Anfield is now living in Paris, although she spends much of her time working in London when she’s not on the road. And she says the album, and her current tour, is very much about what she’s been through and how she’s come out the other side – as a person and as an artist. “It’s been up and down, but I’m in a good place now,” she explains. “I feel like I’ve overcome a lot, that’s why I titled the album Superwoman. It says ‘right, I’m back, I’m positive.’ “I’ve been through a really rubbish time but I want to be honest, you can’t sugar-coat it, there is quite a dark story behind the album. “But I think it does make it slightly better if you’ve got a vulnerability or you’ve got pain because you can hear it in someone’s voice.

“For me, I’d rather watch or listen to artists like that because I find I can relate to them. “So I’m a big fan of artists like Emeli Sande and David Gray, they’ve got a story to tell.” The X Factor star has certainly had her fair share of turmoil and heartache. She’s revealed she broke down emotionally when the father of 22-month-old Arabella left her to bring up the baby alone. “I didn’t handle it well,” she confesses, “but while

creating the album I built myself back up. It was therapy. I made something positive out of something terrible. “Everyone thinks you get in the public eye and stardom, as they call it, and then your life changes but it seems like all my tough lessons came after X Factor. “Hopefully now, though, I’m at the time where I can enjoy life and I’ve learned a lot of tough lessons. “I think the toughest have been about relationship things. I’m not a good judge of character, and with Superwoman you hear me falling out of love, missing my ex-partner, going through heartbreak and healing myself. “The single Bones is about being really in love with someone, caring for them a lot, and wanting them to see you and value

They’ve embraced their new European lifestyle, “especially the wine, bread and cheese,” she jokes.

So why, apart from the obvious plus of being away from the media pressures at home, did she choose France for their new life? “I wanted to challenge myself a little bit and when I went there I fell in love with it and I realsed that I won’t push myself unless I go to places where I’m going to learn about things,” she says. “Since moving there I’ve been around people who are artists and I’ve never really known much about art so now it’s pushing me to learn and be more cultural. “I am just a normal Scouse girl, from a working class background, but I really want to better myself

and constantly learn more about culture and about life.” That includes adding the language to her CV – she and the children are now learning to speak French. “Slowly,” she adds, laughing, “and I’ve

downloaded Rosetta Stone, so I’m trying …” Rebecca Ferguson is at the Liverpool Phil on Friday November 4, rescheduled from February. Her new album Superwoman was released in October.

Similarly, it isn't a good idea to form a professional alliance with a friend.

You could land a high-profile job, a payrise or an impressive promotion. Be discreet at work; don't discuss your personal life or you’ll later regret it. The New Moon (29th) warns against taking emotional and financial risks - maintain the status quo.

VIRGO Aug 24th - Sep 23rd

Your love life will sizzle early November! It’s a great time to embark on a romance. Getting engaged or married is also possible. Already in a serious relationship? Take your amour on a glamorous trip. A windfall makes it possible to purchase new technical equipment. The Full Moon (14th) brings the satisfying conclusion of a legal matter. This will give you more time for hobbies and creative pursuits. The second half of November could put a strain on finances - be frugal and have fun with your nearest and dearest. Spend quality time with friends and family. Launching a home-based business could be profitable.

LIBRA Sep 24th - Oct 23rd

Moneymaking opportunities abound early November so apply for a dream job or ask for a payrise. If you work for yourself, it’s the best time of the year to raise your prices; good customers are willing to pay extra for quality. The Full Moon (14th) paves the way for a passionate encounter. Let down your defences with someone who has proven their loyalty. You may receive a windfall from an inheritance or legal settlement. Devote time to building relationships with your neighbours, which will pay off in unexpected ways. Changes to your domestic routine are inevitable. Be open to making adjustments for the sake of a relative. The New Moon (29th) could bring extra chores.

You’ll have to spend money to make money; invest in a new car, computer or smartphone. Don't listen to petty criticism; a jealous rival will do everything to try and shake your confidence. Remain positive if the New Moon (29th) results in a loss of income, it’s an opportunity to find more rewarding work.

SAGITTARIUS Nov 23rd - Dec 21st

Solitary pursuits give you a welcome chance to recharge your batteries early November and a creative project will be great fun. Don't show your work to others until you're happy with the results. The Full Moon (14th) will attract a terrific job offer. If you've been trying to sell a property, you'll be successful later in November - ignore friends who tell you to hold out for more money. The New Moon (29th) warns against adopting a different look. Playing sports can be an uplifting way to let off steam and fresh air will have a therapeutic effect.

CAPRICORN Dec 22nd - Jan 20th

A Solar Eclipse (1st) prompts you to change your priorities. Instead of focusing on work, status and money, you'll turn your attention inward. Adopting a spiritual practice is a possibility. You might also spend more time reading, writing and communing with nature. Trying to making the world a better place will make you feel stronger and happier. By mid-month, you may feel compelled to leave a toxic job or high pressure position. The Lunar Eclipse (16th) could put an end to defeatist attitudes. Instead of taking the conservative approach, you'll become more spontaneous and open-minded. You'll make friends from different walks of life, be less judgemental and discover levels of personal power you never knew existed. Develop your leadership abilities late September.

AQUARIUS Jan 21st - Feb 19th

Spending time with friends and family is advised early November. You tend to be reclusive when the chips are down; learning to ask for help will be empowering and words of encouragement will keep stress at bay. The Full Moon (14th) could see a legal decision rendered in your favour. Make more time for the artistic pursuits you love. Going to the theatre, watching movies and listening to music will give you an irresistible glow. Set healthy boundaries with a demanding employer. The New Moon (29th) will allow you to take an all too brief break.

PISCES Feb 20th - Mar 20th

A career advancement opportunity will arrive early November. Don't be afraid of taking a job that involves responsibility, you'll enjoy the challenge. It may be necessary to intimidate detractors who poke fun at your unorthodox methods. The sooner you establish you mean business, the more successful you’ll be. The Full Moon (14th) will find you spending quality time with your family. Attending a recital, game or performance will be lots of fun. November will be a wonderfully social time so attend as many get-togethers as possible. The New Moon (29th) will cause you to question your priorities. Devoting more time to the activities you love will create a stir; ignore complaints from demanding people who protest.

Enjoy a walk with former ranger Richie

WINTER is setting in, which makes us want to just crank up the heating and plonk ourselves in front of the telly! But if you wrap yourself up it can be just as enjoyable getting out and about as the seasons change. Former city park ranger Richie Baker, who makes it his mission to get us all to enjoy the outdoors, says summer might be a memory, but that doesn’t mean we have to hibernate. “Take time out of the day to get wrapped up warm and enjoy the simple pleasure of a frosty day – spiders’ webs covered in frost, birds on a park lake, the colours of a winter sky… And a warming cuppa after a winter walk always tastes that bit nicer. “The great thing about our region is that we have so many places of natural beauty on our doorstep, from manicured parks, to country parks and coastal delights, all within easy travelling distance. So resist the temptation to be a couch potato, get out and about, and enjoy The delights that our great outdoors has to offer.” £2 per person For more information contact Richie at richietheranger@gmail. com or call 07850 239 411.

Dazzling dates to put in your diary IT’S beginning to look a lot like Christmas! Liverpool is set to shine as the festive season approaches and there’s a host of events you and your family should not want to miss. From stunning light shows to fun and games for young and old, the city is going to sparkle, so make sure you get into the spirit of things and enjoy all the fun. Just for starters, here are a couple of dazzling dates to put in your diary… Liverpool ONE Lights SwitchOn – November 10 Liverpool ONE has announced the day for the big festive lights switch on. The star shopping area will be all aglow from Thursday, November 10, when the switch on with take place, and its iconic 30-metre Christmas tree will once again take pride of place in Paradise Street. On the evening of the switchon from 4pm, there will be live music, giveaways, street entertainment and pantomime appearances, culminating in the turn on of the tree at 6pm with an impressive light performance created by the Liverpool Empire Theatre. Shops across the city centre will also remain open until 8pm on that evening with bars and restaurants open until late. And, every day in the run up to Christmas, Christmas songs and musical numbers will fill Paradise Street with the lights on the tree creating spectacular dance routines to the music. Bar Hütte, the Alpine-inspired bar, makes a welcome return underneath the tree too, where up to 12 guests can enjoy a hearty

Christmas singsong with a spot of “carol-oke” inside one of its 10 themed ski-huts or celebrate in the disco hütte, complete with disco lights and Christmas tunes. And as a first this year, visitors are being encouraged to enjoy a new dimension to the festive fun by downloading Liverpool ONE’s new Fairy App which allows users to ‘capture’ one of the fairies flying On Chavasse Park, there’s more fun for the family with a host of children’s rides and seasonal food and drink attractions. Dreamworks – November 26 to January 15, 2017 Movie giants DreamWorks will transform St George’s Hall into a magical wonderland this Christmas. In a first for any UK city, the hall will play host to popular characters from the Hollywood studio’s catalogue of animated blockbusters to create a spectacular lantern experience for the whole family. DreamWorks Lights will include movie favourites Shrek, Kung-Fu Panda and the Penguins of Madagascar. As well as the opportunity to see the stars of family film classics, visitors will also get close to Shrek and his pals in a special green-screen photo experience. Full details of what DreamWorks Lights will entail will be released later. DreamWorks Lights will be open daily from November 26 until January 15, 2017. Book tickets online at www.dreamworkslights. com For a full programme of events across the city visit www. onemagicalcity.com

Promising start to season for Alder FC By Peter Harrison

DURING the summer a lot of activity has taken place at the club, as the teams have restructured to reflect the desire to achieve two teams competing in the Premier Division. The team competing last year in the Premier Division has now been renamed Liverpool Nalgo – which is a throwback to the original name of the teams that played at the then named Nalgo club. The team has got off to

a great start and at the time of writing is unbeaten in five league games and a successful Challenge Cup victory. New secretary Gilbo has been on fire, netting four goals, with regular marksman Paul O’Hare adding to the score sheet. An extra time victory in the Challenge Cup against Billinge sees them face Eli Lilley in the next round and the league victories have been against Alumni, Byron and South Sefton.

The first division team, still playing under the Alder banner, have had a mixed start. The opening league fixture against British Rail, on the Walton 3G pitch, saw a 4-2 defeat, despite Antony Barnes netting twice. They have also progressed to the second round of the Challenge Cup with a 1-0 victory over Edge Hill Boys Club (Shaun Davis the marksman) and face a stiff test against Rainhill Town from the West Cheshire League.

Fulwood Arms FC unbeaten By Ian Wignell

Practice makes perfect for Liverpool Sefton By Chris Thomas

IT GOES without saying that sporting glory is not possible without putting the hours in on the training ground and this is no different for Liverpool Sefton Hockey Club. The club currently holds training sessions on three nights a week for its senior teams and Sunday morning sessions for the junior members. In addition to this, coaching is also provided by the club’s coaches at local schools The last two seasons have

been unprecedented in that every senior team has been provided coaching. For this reason, at the recent Liverpool Cricket Club Sports Personality of the Year awards the hockey section decided to recognise the achievements of not a single person, but all the coaches. The award was accepted on behalf of all the coaches by James Cunliffe, the director of coaching. This hard work on the training ground has been rewarded with a steady start to the season for the club,

with all teams recording notable results. The ladies’ first team gained an excellent 2-1 win against Sutton Coldfield and, after a defeat on the first day of the season, the men’s first team won two games in a row. Special mention should also go to the ladies’ third team who navigated the first month of the season without a defeat. Practice makes perfect and if the excellent attendance at training continues this is sure to lead to a successful season for the club.

AFTER an impressive first three league wins, Fulwood Arms FC went into a home fixture with last year’s league runners-up, Hunting Lodge. Fulwood found themselves 1-0 up after a James Buckley goal and the second half saw the Fulwood add another from Phil O’Hagan but they then conceded a goal with ten minutes to go and disastrously threw all three points away when Hunting Lodge equalised with what turned out to be the last kick

of the game. The final score was 2-2. Next up was an away trip to bottom of the table Old Albion which turned out to be a 10-goal thriller. A first half hat-trick from Ali Al-Rifaie and a James Buckley header saw Fulwood 4-2 ahead at half time. Second half saw Buckley grabbed his second of the game before being substituted for Garry Purcell and it wasn’t long before Purcell himself got on the score sheet.

Albion added two late goals to finish the score with a 6-4 away win for Fulwood. An away trip to title contenders Bootle Wanderers showed Fulwood Arms really do mean business with an impressive 5-0 win which saw The Fulwood dominate the game from start to finish with goals from Shane Craig, Michael Turner, two from James Buckley and a Bootle own goal. Fulwood are currently top of the league with an impressive five wins and a draw out of six games.

South retain interest in Challenge Cup By Jim Stanway

SOUTH Liverpool FC reached the last 16 of the Liverpool County FA Challenge Cup, of which they are the holders, with an emphatic 4-0 win over last season’s semi-finalists Eagle Sports from the Cheshire League. Two goals either side of half-time from the evergreen Gary Dunning, one from the penalty spot, and two late goals from the fit-again Alex Woodcock were far too much for the struggling Warringtonbased side, who have lost some important players to NW Counties side Barnton. South will now play another of last season’s semi-finalists, Alumni, at Wavertree Sports Park in November. South’s form in the league has been stuttering with successive draws against Capenhurst villa and Heswall. The game against Capenhurst was a dramatic one with South finding themselves two goals down after 10 minutes with Villa’s first two attacks of the game. In fact, Capenhurst scored with a long-range effort before they had even got into South penalty area! South pulled a goal back through David Mee before halftime but, despite dominating possession, went further behind in the second half after a breakaway.

However, South eked out a 3-3 draw with goals from Alex Woodcock and a Gary Dunning penalty in the last five minutes. A lively encounter at Heswall saw another draw for South after falling behind in the first half. Goals from both full backs, Steve Kelly and Paul Lundon, put South ahead but they then conceded an equaliser when defending the lead with only 10 men following Kevin Martin’s dismissal. South’s reserve side have had a disappointing set of results, including elimination from both cup competitions. An amazing 6-6 draw with New Street Reserves saw the team lose 5-4 on penalties which was tough luck on David Mee who scored four goals and a successful penalty in the shoot-out. A 5-2 defeat to Bootle Reserves in the league cup saw the reserves eliminated from both cup competitions at the first round stage in successive weeks for the second successive season! South’s youth team have been in scintillating form, playing a great brand of attractive football. Three successive 4-1 wins have seen the team maintain their 100 per cent win rate and make progress in the Youth Cup, eliminating a more experienced Woolton side.
