THE BOY IN THE PIT

By Stephen Guy

Footpaths tempted people to explore the countryside when money was short and few had cars. Walking is an inexpensive pleasure and the period between two world wars saw the growth of a mass outdoor pursuits movement. Books and newspaper articles suggested walks to be followed by readers. Others bought maps and created their own routes or simply wandered the paths and lanes seeing what would turn up. In the 1920s there were excellent public transport links to outly-

ing areas. Cheshire Lines ran trains to stations at Childwall and Gateacre while trams and buses criss-crossed the growing suburbs. Druids’ Cross was a popular start for many rambles. The cross roads were named after the ancient Calder Stones surrounded by railings outside the park (pictured). The description of a walk from Allerton to Grassendale from this era makes fascinating reading nearly a century later. “In the shelter of Beech Lane, which stretches down from the terminus of the Calderstones car, the

air was mild.” The writer crosses the park by the Allerton Oak and mansion house before reaching Allerton Road. Further on he comes to a wetland area called Forty Pits – “a bowery wilderness intersected by a chain of small lakes winding to and fro among the branches. “A boy who was swinging on a gate told me that the hollow was called The Place of a Hundred Lakes. “The stillness of this place is remarkable. The frozen water is no more quiet than the wood. Two swans sheltering in the dry brushwood seemed to be carved in marble.” Walkers are urged to look for a footpath signposted To Greenhill Road. “Soon after crossing a little brook you are in Greenhill Road but you cross it to continue along a pathway winding by a farmyard. “This takes you along easily enough by quiet ways and past a group of cottages. “Crossing a railway bridge and Mossley Hill Road you find a further path called Holmfield Road and by following this you soon reach Grassendale and the Aigburth cars.” However, walkers are advised to continue on to the river – this was long before the construction of Otterspool Promenade. “Its best ending is by a quiet stroll along the shore under what was Otterspool Hall to St Michael’s Station.” Learn more about the history of Liverpool at the Museum of Liverpool, Pier Head, open 10am to 5pm every day, admission free.

WHERE does the time go? What will 2015 bring for us all? Hopefully, for some it will mean financial prosperity – for others it could mean a change in health (let it be for the better) – others may be planning life-changing situations like getting married or starting a family. Then there are those who will be changing jobs – homes – moving to new areas – or coming to terms with not-so-good changes that have taken place during the last twelve months.

CARPET TRADERS OFFER K.I.N.D. CHRISTMAS HELP CHRISTMAS came early for KIND when Captain and Chair of the Carpet Traders Golf Society, Tony Griffin of Woolton Carpets, presented Stephen Yip with a cheque for £6,095.00 raised by the members throughout 2014. This donation will be used by the charity to help fund its 2014 Christmas Appeal which will help thousands of disadvantaged children and families over Christmas. Also pictured is Mr Chris Davies, Trustee of KIND and supporter of the Society. Stephen Yip said; “Tony and the gang have provided KIND with an amazing donation. It will help us to make Christmas a great deal happier and less stressful for another 100 disadvantaged families from within our Community.” Carpet traders from all over the North West, along with other local businesses, raised

funds throughout the year at various events; one member did a sponsored bike ride from Rainford to Hartlepool and the main event was held at Liverpool Cricket Club (sponsored by THE HOUSE Spa and Beauty who, along with other local businesses and golf clubs, donated prizes for the raffle). Captain Tony Griffin chose to donate all money raised this year to KIND, previous years having seen donations to Linda McCartney and Zoe's. The 32 members played golf all over the North West and at every event all members make a small donation to the captain’s charity. The KIND Christmas Appeal is in its 39th year and has helped thousands of disadvantaged children and their families from across Merseyside to enjoy this special time of year. Working in partnership with

statutory and voluntary sector organisations, KIND identify those families in our community who are most in need and who don’t have the resources to spend on the things that many of us take for granted during the season of goodwill. Using teams of volunteers, they pack hampers with food and together with toy parcels distribute them to families across the region in time for Christmas. It costs £60 to put together a food hamper (which includes a crate of fresh fruit and vegetables) and each year KIND aim to deliver at least 1000 hampers across the region. KIND can only reach their Appeal target through the generosity and support of people and companies from across the region. For more information please contact Stephen Yip on: 0151 708 8273.

STRANGE TALES

SOUND OF SILENCE By Anton Valdemart

HUGO loved records and stored his vinyls on shelves and in cupboards around the

neat but gloomy suburban semi. For the first 20 years of marriage Marina tolerated her

husband’s hobby with mild amusement. She enjoyed music but not the pop Hugo revelled in.

www.liverpoollink.co.uk Marina liked jazz and ballroom, melodies and rhythms disliked by her other half. He pulled a face when she turned up the radio for Friday Night is Music Night. Hugo laughed at her Victor Sylvester Come Dancing videos. Their children Marriot and Yana, named after their parents’ contrasting music idols, knew when to make themselves scarce during marital rows. Marriot became manager of a successful band and moved to Los Angeles. Yana was a singer with a 1940s swing band performing at World War Two weekends throughout Britain. Marina started to notice Hugo changing in the 1990s. CDs had long started to replace vinyl but now supplies of his beloved plastic started to dry up. There had always been a choice – now it was CDs or nothing. When downloads came in a few years later, Hugo felt isolated. Then he discovered E-bay, second-hand shops and car boot sales. Hugo became well-known among dealers who would offer scarce and unusual pressings. His record collection grew from a humble 500 LPs to 1,000, then 2,000 – on and on. With the children flown the nest, he spent more and more. Hugo’s job as an Inland Revenue accountant in Bootle provided a safe, secure income. Marina had a successful bridal wear business – she had thrown her records out long

ago and embraced downloads. Hugo would not change. “Records are like time capsules,” he told her. “They are a physical expression of the music. By owning a record you are a part in the creative process.” This left Marina cold but she became more and more heated as Hugo’s hobby became an obsession. He had some singles but LPs were his major preoccupation. Now he just had to have all the sounds he had longed to own when he was a penniless teenager.

He trawled the Internet to locate rare LPs. He drew inspiration from Sounds of the Sixties and 1970s shows on Radio 2. Hugo was starting to suffer hearing loss but refused Marina’s pleas to have treatment. “People should speak more clearly and not mumble,” he snorted. He played his records for hours driving Marina to distraction before she discovered a remedy – ear plugs. At last space ran out. The crunch came when a

carelessly stacked pile of LPs fell on Hugo, knocking him out. Marina pulled the LPs off him and administered first aid. He came to after a few minutes, slightly confused but unhurt apart from a bruised forehead. The shock had brought about a change. Hugo still enjoyed admiring and handling his records but now he was a fan of downloads, listening contentedly for hours on his headphones. Marina revelled in the sound of silence.

New Year – New Challenge AS the New Year starts, Marie Curie Cancer Care is offering anyone looking for a new challenge the chance to take part in an adventure of a lifetime, by joining ‘Team Liverpool’ and taking part in the Liverpool Hospice trek to Sri Lanka to help raise funds for local people suffering with cancer and other terminal illnesses. Fundraiser Antony Jones said: “This amazing trek will take place between 13-22 November 2015. Signing up in January will provide a focus for the year ahead, and an incentive to stick to those New Year’s resolutions of getting fit and taking on new adventures, whilst helping raise money for terminally ill people across Merseyside. “Participants will trek to ancient cities through jungle, forest trails, village paths and beside lakes, taking in the world famous rock fortress of Sigiriya, one of Sri Lanka’s major attractions which has World Heritage status. There will also be a chance to see Asian elephants

in the wild, before a final early morning ascent to the summit of ‘Adam’s Peak’, one of the most venerated mountains in the world. Standing at 2412m, the sunrise participants will witness from the top of this mountain is considered by some to be one of the most spec-

tacular natural phenomena in the world. The whole adventure will be rounded off with a celebratory dinner, and there’s also the opportunity for participants to extend their stay to explore Sri Lanka further. It really promises to be a truly amazing trek!”

LIFE ‘n’ STYLE

with JADE AINSWORTH

Now it’s all about the sales, bout the sales! No wonder – the new owners have spent millions! The Newz is no more… in fact there are three bars and a contemporary restaurant serving amazing food.

HEY guys and welcome to my first column for 2015! Hope everybody has had a lovely time over the holiday season. On Friday before Christmas I was invited to the VIP launch of Amanzi. This glamorous new restaurant, pictured on Page 9 opposite, wouldn't be out of place in London or New York but the owners decided to launch in Liverpool at the old Newz Bar venue in Water Street. The launch party was typical of PR guru Paul Knowles with all the regional glitterati attending and a host of paparazzi outside snapping. I was expecting to see the former Newz bar changed slightly but, wow, what a transformation!

The cocktails were to die for and the food reminded me of Hakkassan, another one of my fav’s! This is definitely the new place to be and be seen for lunch or dinner. I'm sure it will be a hit as it's not all about the looks and the cocktails and food are out of the world. So January is all about the sales!! Some people love it, some people hate it!! I have such a soft spot for the amazing designer Alexander Wang and his notorious Rocco bags! I was over the moon when I came

across this Flamingo pink with pale rose gold studs on the bottom that have been reduced in the sale from £731.00 to £512.00 on www.alexanderwang.com – this was definitely my fav new year bargain! Recently my daughter Jasmine started training & performing with the fabulous MD Productions. Now most of you will remember them from their incredible performances on Britain’s Got Talent but if you haven’t heard of them yet then make sure you check them out as they are AMAZING!! I went along to the Epstein Theatre to watch the Beyoncé show and the talent that I witnessed on that stage was unbelievable! So excited to see what this year brings.

A total of £24,000 has been committed from a variety of

Cover Bands ‘here to stay’ by Nic Perrins of The Merseyside Gig Guide

Happy New Year

from all at The LINK

DAN Elson of The Comfortable Jumpers, discusses the pro’s and cons of being in a covers band…. I was in a gigging originals band for 6 years playing various venues across Merseyside and beyond. Although the response was good, we struggled to establish a regular following and were rarely offered more than the token expenses payment for our shows. This year me and two friends started a covers band with a difference - The Comfortable Jumpers. We have now played a number of shows at a variety of venues, and received payment for them. The difference we have all noted is the attitude primarily of venues towards

booking our band. Up front we are being asked how much we charge to perform, we’re expected to play hour-long sets and are generally treated in a more professional manner. So why are cover bands revered by venues and frowned upon by other musicians? I think the answer is that most cover bands

provide a service. A sure thing. Tunes that you can rely on. They may not inspire you, but they will move your feet. Audience enjoyment should be the paramount objective of any performance, and it is one that cover bands frequently fulfil. Until the music scene supports itself, prioritises the quality of the gig-goer’s experience over the quick buck of ‘popular’ bands and genuinely rewards quality musicians, it seems that the average Joe will stick to karaoke bars, Saturday night TV shows and cover

ADVERTISING ANNOUNCEMENT

Stamp duty Bonus!! As at the 4th December 2014 a new regime came into force in respect of Stamp Duty liability which is anticipated to generate an increase in house sales moving forward in to next year. The new system that will cut stamp duty for the majority of house buyers which previously was paid at a single rate on the entire property price and will now be paid on a sliding scale basis. For instance, under the old rules if you bought a house for £185,000.00, then you would expect to pay 1% on the full amount i.e. a total of £1,850.00. Under the new rules for the same property you’ll pay nothing on the first £125,000.00 and 2% on the remaining £60,000.00 equating to £1,200.00, making a saving of £650.00. It is expected that the purchasers looking to buy at a price reflecting the national average house price will now benefit from an added bonus giving savings of for instance of £4,700.00 on a purchase of £265,000.00. For those who are purchasing above the cost bracket of

£937,500.00 then the rate of Stamp Duty will increase. The exception is where contracts have been exchanged but the transaction has not completed prior to the 4th December, then they will be able to select which of the arrangements are most being beneficial.

This new system of the face of it appears to be a fairer one but only time will tell whether it will deliver the sales boom anticipated. email aevans@gadllp.co.uk phone: 0151 236 5000

WHERE HAVING BABIES LEADS By Bill Chambers IN SUNNY June Liverpool Sefton started its second Back to Hockey campaign. Supported by England Hockey and Sport England’s Sportivate initiatives, the take up was fantastic with 12 women attending. On a cold December Saturday, 8 of them completed the first half of their season playing in the Lancashire Women’s League. Sefton’s 5th team was newly created to provide them with opportunities to play regularly and returner

Caroline is captain. Taught by Sefton’s coaches Susie McFarlane and Rachel Kelly, the course was a great success. The women were aged between 22 and 45 and half were over 30. Three had babies 2 months before the course started! Rachel Williams attended Archbishop Blanch and played for Lancashire, then dropped out for 10 years. She has 2 children and Molly was born just 2 months before she started Back to Hockey. She found the course ‘really good’

and was encouraged by the coaching from Kenny Cook. She likes the exercise.

has found the flexibility at Sefton makes her regret not re-starting sooner.

Emily Gascoigne played at school but dropped out at University where she ‘partied too much’.

Finally we have Caroline who hadn’t played since school in 1989. She has 9 and 15 year old boys who play cricket with Dad in the summer.

She returned 18 years later as a Series Producer at Hollyoaks. She started Back to Hockey 6 weeks after her second child was born so she could ‘get back into shape’. She had been worried about combining family and hockey but

She started to play to get time away from the men, to help her calm down in the midst of the stress of a professional career plus of course fitness and the social benefits. Now she’s captain!

SOUTH FINISH UNBEATEN IN 2014 by Jim Stanway AFTER an impressive 1-0 win over the league champions, Maghull, with a goal on the stroke of half-time from skipper Cameron Dalton (his 14th of the season), South Liverpool FC sit stride the West Cheshire League First Division table with a 10-point lead. The team remain unbeaten after 16 games so far this season and as they have no games until the new year, South are looking a good bet for their first senior league title since 1966. Despite some impressively large wins, it’s South defence which has stood out, having claimed six clean sheets on the run. A 3-0 win over South’s bogey side, Mallaby, with goals from Tom Kinsella, Gary Pollard and Cameron Dalton laid that particular ghost to rest. A 6-0 win over Upton AA with goals from Nathan Trout, Alex Woodcock, Gary Dunning, Nick Walker and Gary Pollard (2) , followed by a 5-0 win over Ashville, with goals from Gary Dunning, Cameron Dalton, Nick Walker and Steve Doyle (2) are ample evidence of the team’s strike power. The reserves have returned to the

promotion places with three successive wins. A 3-0 win at Everton PLH with two goals from Ryan McMahon and one from Adam Shelton, a 4-3 win over promotion rivals Bootle Reserves, with goals from Adam Shelton, Ryan McMahon, Ryan Cullen and Scott Binmuda, and a 2-0 win over Chester Nomads Reserves, with goals from Adam Shelton and Ryan Cullen, have helped place the team just behind leaders Kirkby Town Railway on goal difference. The youth team remain top of the table after a crushing 8-3 win over bottom club Ellesmere Port Town, with goals from Craig Byrne, Alex Griffiths and debutant Andy Lloyd adding to a hat-trick from leading scorer David Mee and two from captain Vita Mbolokele. An even more dominating win by 9-1 over Formby Juniors has seen the team progress to the quarter-finals of the Liverpool CFA Youth Cup with the goals coming from Craig Byrne, David Mee, Ben Dickson, Vita Mbolokele plus a hat-trick by Alex Griffiths and two from Jamie Clair. Mee has scored 19 goals already this season and Griffiths has 18 goals, a highly impressive return for both players.

South manager Martin Ryman is pictured receiving his Manager of the Month award for October from Ged Kinsey, Vice President of the West Cheshire League.

Ian Quirk spaying the ball about.

FULWOOD ON THE SLIPPERY SLOPE! By Ian Wignell FULWOOD Arms FC started the month of November with an away win at Athletico Bay. The game was played on 3g service and was rather tricky but Fulwood managed a 3-1 win with a marvellous header from right back Rob Jones and two goals from young striker Graeme Kenny. The next away day was a trip up to Thomas Lane to face Old Albion, a team who Fulwood manager Wignell had expected his team to beat. Unfortunately that wasn’t the case and a game with limited chances saw the Fulwood lose in a disappointing 2-0 defeat. Then another two crushing defeats, the first against Fazakerley Athletic; after winning 1-0 for most of the game after a calmly stuck first half penalty from skipper Rob Hughes, Fulwood agonisingly conceded two late goals to lose the game 2-1. Then came another crushing 3-0 home defeat to Hunting Lodge which has seen the Fulwood players’ morale slightly dampened but they know they are just having a bad spell at the moment and will get back to the decent form they started the season with.
