Issue 93 – March 2015

KEEP OFF THE GRASS By Stephen Guy AS country estates were established, wealthy owners faced the problem of how to keep animals away without fences spoiling the view. The 19th century invention of lawnmowers transformed the upkeep and management of parks and estates. Before the mechanical control of grass, workers using scythes and sickles were employed to cut lawns and greens. Larger areas were kept trim by farm animals such as sheep, horses and cattle munching away at the grass. Owners of fashionable houses did not want livestock wandering over their manicured lawns. They wanted to create idyllic settings with sweeping views enhanced by landmarks and follies. Everything needed to reflectgrace and ease. Landscape gardeners such a Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown (1715 – 83) were in great demand. Brown created a purely English style of gar-

den and estate designs which took much effort to create but ended up looking very natural. The solution to keeping animals off the grass was to build a ha-ha – a walled trench which could not be seen from the house but serving the same purpose as a fence. A good example is in front of the mansion in Calderstones Park (pictured) although originally there was no bridge. The name is said to have originated in 18th century France, ha-ha being an exclamation of surprise or amusement when the recessed wall suddenly becomes visible. They also had an ornamental purpose, improving the lie of the land. Although some animals are capable of jumping over barriers, ha-has were strong deterrents. However, its origins probably go back much earlier when deer leaps were constructed in royal hunting parks in the Middle Ages. These leaps consisted of ditches with one steep side topped by a fence or hedge. This allowed deer to enter the hunting preserve but not leave.

There were exclusive fenced royal hunting parks in Toxteth and West Derby. Traces of a Toxteth Park deer leap are believed to be in woodland at the bottom of Mersey Road, Otterspool. Strict laws protected royal hunting forests – in Norman times only the monarch had the right to construct deer leaps. There are now believed to be as many wild deer in Britain as in the Middle Ages. Although secretive and difficult to spot, they are occasionally seen in the Liverpool area.

The Calderstones Park ha-ha. Learn more about the history of Liverpool at the Museum of Liverpool, Pier Head, open: 10am-5pm every day, admission free.

Going to the ends of the earth in memory of Dad PEOPLE remember loved ones in many ways, each finding their own way of holding someone they have lost close to their heart. Some take flowers to a grave, others keep a picture in a locket around their neck. Thirty four year old Emma Boylan from Liverpool has decided to trek across Sri Lanka, and scale the venerated mountain of Adams Peak in her dads memory – and help others at the same time. Emma said: “I’m taking on my second sponsored overseas trek later this year to raise funds for the Marie Curie Hospice, Liverpool where my father John Thomas Boylan spent his last couple of months terminally ill with a brain tumor. Dad was given outstanding care from all of the wonderful doctors and nurses who made his last months very comfortable. He was one in ten billion, never to be another like him, a true genuine gentleman, my hero and my

best friend.” My first trek was to the Bocaina National Park rainforest in Brazil in 2012. I took some of dads ashes with me, and scattered them alongside one of the many waterfalls we passed en-route. It made me feel close to him, and it’s so comforting to think that part of him is in such a beautiful place. I plan to do this in Sri Lanka too, it’s like he’s experiencing it with me, and a part of him will forever be in the amazing places I trek to in his memory.” I made loads of new friends on the Brazil trek, many of whom I’m looking forward to trekking with again in Sri Lanka. It’s such a lovely way to remember a loved one, and raise funds for a worthy cause.” Fundraiser Antony Jones said: “Emma is amazing, always so bubbly and positive, and a joy to trek alongside. She has raised over £4,000 so far for the hospice, and is aiming to raise another

STRANGE TALES

HUNT THE SLIPPER By Anton Valdemart THE old house could haunt the mind, its creaking timbers and echoing stone passageways calling up restless spirits or indelible memories. Mrs Rimmer was not fanciful or nervous but knew what she heard. She had been housekeeper at The Laurels for 30 years and had grown old within its ivycovered walls. There was nothing unusual about the house, one of a row of big houses near Princes Park. To the casual observer it was indistinguishable from the rest with its thick lace curtains and dark green door. It had been built when Queen Victoria was young. Now she was dead and her son Edward was king. Just a few days earlier Mrs Rimmer and the two housemaids had watched Edward pass by in an open

carriage after laying the foundation stone at Liverpool Cathedral. The Laurels was usually empty when Mrs Rimmer heard the eerie shuffling. It was now so familiar that she hardly paused at whatever she was doing. It started as a tiny, distant sound somewhere in the bowels of the house. Slowly it got closer and Mrs Rimmer could hear the shuffling footsteps, curiously uneven, as if someone was walking uncomfortably. However, this time there was a variation. The shuffling footsteps grew louder and louder – she had never heard them so close. Mrs Rimmer looked up from her book and heard a voice croak in desperation: “Looking … looking. Will I never find it?” The woman’s voice, while distinct, had a hoarse grating quality as uttered by an extremely aged person. It

made Mrs Rimmer think of cobwebs and tombs. To her relief, the shuffling footsteps gradually faded away and she distinctly heard one step had the sound of soft leather and the other the pad of thick wool. The doorbell rang and Mrs Rimmer opened it to see the smiling faces of Dr Ling, his wife Thora and daughters Esme and Sophia. Dr Ling was an excellent employer who had moved in following the death of the previous owner, Dr Mould. Mrs Rimmer felt part of the family, not a servant. She helped organise the party and was encouraged to take part in the after-dinner games. “Let’s play hunt the slipper!” said 18-year-old Esme excitedly. Mrs Rimmer, wearing her familiar white cap, joined in the circle of family and friends. They sat facing each other furtively passing a

slipper behind their backs. It stopped in Mrs Rimmer’s hot hands. Mrs Ling guessed correctly who had the slipper. “That’s not my slipper – ugh, it’s horrible,” said Esme when Mrs Rimmer held it out. It was ancient and lay like a shrivelled Egyptian mummy’s foot in her hands.

www.liverpoollink.co.uk

The embroidered slipper was covered in cobwebs and a dead spider fell out. Mrs Rimmer threw it down in disgust and everyone fell silent, recoiling in horror. The silence was broken by a chillingly shrill voice screaming from somewhere inside the depths of the building: “You’ve got it!”

How we beat smoking together MY HUSBAND and I between us smoked 60 cigarettes a day and we decided to join Roy Castle FagEnds on 6th March 2013. Like many smokers, we’d thought about giving up smoking, probably for the same reasons – money, health and of course, social acceptance. We’d always have the same excuses “it’s too hard”, “I’ve tried before but can’t do it” or we’d cut down but couldn’t make that final stop due to still enjoying certain cigarettes – for example after a meal - but deep down this is really habit and association. In March 2013, I told my husband that I was going to join a FagEnds weekly meeting to give up smoking and to my surprise he said that he would join too. We phoned Roy Castle FagEnds free phone number – 0800 1952131 – and booked a one-to-one appointment (although there were two of us!) with Jane at Hunts Cross Health Centre. Armed with NRT patches and lozenges, we decided not to buy

anymore cigarettes. At each weekly appointment, we had our carbon monoxide levels tested by simply blowing into a monitor – my husband and I became quite competitive over the results! We can’t say that it was easy – you need to pick the right time and make sure that you really want to stop, prepare to fight the urges to smoke which of course gets easier the longer you don’t smoke. I found that when I felt like a cigarette, I thought of something else or did something to take my mind off it until I thought about it and forgot about it all in the same thought! We found it easier because both of us attempted to stop at the same time and neither wanted to be the first to back down! So with the support of Roy Castle FagEnds and each other, we haven’t smoked since March 2013. Peter and Pauline, Hunts Cross For further information, please call Roy Castle FagEnds 0800 1952131.

Goan Sunset

WONDERFUL GOA! By Moira Hesketh WE’VE just returned from a wonderful two weeks in Candolim, Goa (India). The last time we went was way back in 1993 and it’s fair to say that it’s changed a fair bit in the last 22 years! However, whilst it has become much more popular and there are many more tourists, and inevitably it has become more commercialised, it has still retained its inherent ambiance and “Goa-ness” and is a great place to just chill out and relax, especially at this time of year. Admittedly, stray dogs and cows wandering the street (and even the beaches!) are not everyone’s cup of tea but you soon get used

to it! At this time of year the sunshine is guaranteed (30 degrees every day while we were there), not a drop a rain and hardly a cloud in the sky. There are dozens of top quality hotels to choose from and accommodation to suit all tastes and price ranges. The major decisions involved tend to be “shall we go to the beach or the pool today?” and the people you meet (hotel staff, waiters, bar staff, shop assistants, taxi drivers) are just wonderful and really make the holiday. There are shops, markets and restaurants galore (the last time we went, eating out involved a 10-15 minute taxi ride to the nearest town). While

you are in Goa you must visit one of the markets - there are many, including Anjuna Wednesday flea market, Mapusa, and the huge Saturday night market in Arpora which has a brilliant atmosphere and offers locally produced apparel, spices, tea, jewellery galore, hand-made toys, bags, clothing, and much more. Travel to Goa with a half-empty case and buy your shirts, shorts, tops, etc., for £1.50 each! Don’t forget to use your very best bargaining skills! You still see Goa’s old faithful hippies there too. This former Portuguese colony has miles of tropical sandy beaches. But obviously there is more to Goa than beaches! The old town of Goa was the

A Backwaters Houseboat capital of Goa in the time of Portuguese rule. You will find a collection of churches and cathedrals and the highlight of Old Goa is the Basilica of Bom Jesus, which houses the well preserved remains of St. Francis Xavier, who died in 1552 on the island of Sancian (off the coast of China). And you simply can’t visit Goa without a trip to the jewellers! Goa is famous for its jewellers and there are so many you don’t know where to start. Goa is loved by people from Liverpool and we were so pleased with GM Jewellers in Tito’s Road, Baga, that I absolutely have to give them a mention. Well, after much research, looking on TripAdvisor and talking to friends who have visited Goa each year for 15 years, I decided that G M Jewellers was a must! My friend takes all her friends’ and families’ repairs, re-designs, etc, over to Gulzar and Mohamed at G M, who have been in Tito’s Road (Baga) since 1987, and she has enjoyed an excellent service at excellent prices for many years. The first piece of jewellery I ever had was in my Christmas sack when I

was twelve. My mum died when I was a teenager so it is of great sentimental value. It was a little gold ring with an oval topaz. I loved that ring and wore it for many years. However it became too small and it lay in a drawer for many years. I often thought I would love to have something done with it but the value of the ring was so low (about £40 tops) compared to the price I was quoted for having it made into a pendant (£350 to £450) by a couple of Liverpool jewellers. I took it over to G M Jewellers and they designed and made the most beautiful pendant for less than the price of a meal out! My sister Mal had an old cluster ring from 1970 and an old gold bangle which had been made from old earrings, chain, etc and, like me, she had often thought she would like to have something done to update them. She lives in France and had been quoted extortionate prices. G M Jewellers made what we can only describe as an exquisite and unique ring and bracelet, adding other semi-precious stones like topaz, amethyst and peridot. She was absolutely “blown away” by the design, quality and price of the work

and is over the moon. This was the result of Gulzar’s brilliant design and listening skills. Not to be outdone, my other sister had an old ring re-designed to a fabulous band ring for one twelfth of the price she had been quoted in Liverpool!! These guys can really make your old jewellery come to life. So whether you are just looking for a little silver bracelet, a semi-precious stone, an engagement and wedding ring set, which they specialise in, or an absolutely brilliant diamond piece, call and see Gulzar and Mohamed at G M Jewellers. They can make whatever you want and at an absolute fraction of the cost here and of course, as you’d expect, the work is all fully guaranteed: G M Jewellers, Tito’s Road, Baga, Goa: www.gmjewellers.com; email; gd@gmjewellers.com - look them up on TripAdvisor too. If you haven’t been go Goa, give it a try! At this time of year where else will you find guaranteed sunshine, great people, great food, amazing prices and wonderful sunsets. No wonder people go back to Goa year after year!

Liverpool law firm expands in to city centre PAUL Crowley & Co Solicitors has celebrated the launch of its new city centre office. The law firm, which already has established branches in Anfield and West Derby, has opened a new office on 1 Old Hall Street in the city’s commercial district. The city centre office will house PCS Law, the firm’s new commercial law department which will focus on commercial, corporate and employment law as well as commercial property and debt litigation. The office will also include residential property and conveyancing servic-

es, a private client department dedicated to advice on wills, probates and estate planning as well as an experienced team of personal injury solicitors. Senior partner Paul Crowley said: “We’re delighted to be opening a new office in the city centre, with offices already throughout Liverpool’s suburbs, this felt like the next big step to help develop the commercial side of the business. We’ve been planning this launch since late 2014, so it’s great to see it finally come to fruition. The new city centre office coincides

with the launch of PCS Law, a new commercial law department, so we’re looking forward to seeing this develop as well as building on the success of the other areas we operate in.” An official launch party was held at in the Chamber of Commerce at 1 Old Hall Street on Thursday 12th February to celebrate the expansion. Guests enjoyed oriental inspired canapés and signature cocktails created by the restaurant 60 Hope Street. A selection of artwork of Liverpool landmarks was on display, created by the students of Liverpool school and sixth form college, The Studio.

Service organised for day of prayer WOMEN’S WORLD DAY OF PRAYER (Friday, 6 March 2015) The annual Women’s World Day of Prayer is being held Friday 6th March. Churches Together in Mossley Hill are organising a service which will be held at St Barnabas Church at 1.30pm and will finish at 2.30pm (followed by refreshments). This year the service has been prepared by the Christian Women of Bahamas and the theme is “Jesus said

to them: Do you know what I have done to you?” The service is open to all, not just women. The service is always an inspiring one and we encourage all those who are able to, to come along and join in fellowship and prayer with others across the world. It will finish in time for those who need to collect children from school. World Day of Prayer is a worldwide movement of Christian women of many traditions who come together to

observe a common day of prayer each year and who, in many countries, have a continuing relationship in prayer and service. Through World Day of Prayer, women affirm that prayer and action are inseparable and both have immeasurable influence in the world. Cleaner explains how they are transforming tiles and grout ... by M. Michael McNally Liverpool Kleenright, a well-known carpet and upholstery cleaning company, has now started to clean tiles and grout for home owners and businesses. Ruth McNally, the owner of Kleenright, explained the reasoning behind this move: “We have been cleaning carpets, and upholstery across Liverpool and Merseyside for the past 10 years and after our clients had seen how beautifully clean their carpets looked a few would jokingly say “you couldn’t do anything with my tiles could you?" This is a picture of a bathroom floor that the owner was thinking of replacing; they decide to call Kleenright who after carrying out a full tile and grout audit informed the client the floor could be

saved. This became an increasingly common question so we looked into it further and found that by combining investment in the latest technology with our superior cleaning products we could greatly improve the look of their tiles. Not only that, but with our grout colouring system, and 89 colours to choose from, we could guarantee their tiles would look beautiful for years to come”. Mike McNally, Ruth’s husband, also

works for the company and explained how this service works: “When we attend a client’s property we carry out a full tile and grout audit. This will determine what type of cleaning is best for the client. “Most people think that the bathroom tiles look old and tired. “Therefore, they need replacing. Most don’t want to go down this road as it can be very expensive and messy - they call us in the hope we can make their

tiles look a little bit better. Our aim is to make them look like NEW!”. “We spray the tiles and grout with a deep penetrating solution which helps to remove all the scum and grease that may be lying on them. We then agitate the solution before carrying out a high pressure deep clean with water as hot as 250° if needed, and all extracted out of the property with powerful vacuums”. “We then make sure the area is thor-

oughly dried with our industrial dryers. If that is all that is required the process stops there, and we pack everything away”. “However, most people choose to have the grout sealed once it has been cleaned. They can choose any colour they like from our selection of 89 or even make one of their own if they have a sample we can copy. When they choose our colour sealing package they know their grout is guaranteed to look great for 5 years.” To see more before and after pictures have a look at their web site www.kleenrightuk.co.uk If you require more information contact Ruth on 0151 220 0363

I REMEMBER a client saying to me years ago that there are only 2 types of people in this world – leaders and people who need to be led. My classes in Garston have been absolutely rammed, which is brilliant, but can bring new problems as, sometimes, people work with other people of a different grade or level. In all the martial arts classes I have done over the years, I was always taught to help people who were of a lower grade to me. Traditional martial arts training is a great way of learning this and I'm sure there are other great things out there to help people of all ages to achieve this. With so many things going on around us these days, whether it be in our city or across the world, surely now is the time to step up and help people around us and be an inspiration. Here are 3 quick tips to help you start taking on some lead-

ership qualities today: Show respect to others, no matter what age, race or ability Communicate in a way that will inspire others. Remember, we are a mirror of ourselves Be humble Whatever you want to achieve in life, whether it be to lose weight, get fit, or get a new job, etc, you have to have some leadership qualities, be proactive and make it happen. BEZZY BUDDIES CELEBRATE FIRST ANNIVERSARY WELL, I can’t believe it has been a whole year since I launched Bezzy Buddies back in March 2014!! Oh, and what a year it has been!! Since I created this concept I have been introduced to so many fabulous ladies each with their own story to tell. I now consider these ladies lifelong friends and I’m so excited for what’s to come this year. The success of the site has been completely overwhelming and in such a short space of time we have created a community for women to recreate themselves, build confidence and make and develop a new chapter in their lives. Whatever your circumstances, wherever you live, Bezzy Buddies can reach you and bring you into their circle and you’ll never feel alone again. Since the launch we have hosted some incredible events and made so many fantastic memories. Events, to name

just a few, have included afternoon teas in fabulous venues such as 60 Hope Street, Bar & Grill and the Racquets Club. We have chartered a yacht for an afternoon cruise and attended Chester and Haydock races where we enjoyed a live performance by Sir Tom Jones. During the year we have raised funds and donated to charities such as “Headway”, a charity which works to improve the lives of brain injury sufferers and also the “Butterflies” charity for bereaved children which is a charity personal to myself and my daughter Jade. Pushing forward into our second year we have some absolutely fantastic events planned, ranging from Aintree/Chester/Haydock races to our gorgeous afternoon tea events at various locations. I can honestly say I am really looking forward to meeting many more beautiful

inspirational people. I would just like to say a huge thank you to each and every one of our members for making this an exceptional and magical year for me. When I reflect on each and every event, the laughs and fun times we have all shared make it all worthwhile. I have had nothing but positive feedback and without you all none of this would be possible. A special thank you also goes to my lovely friend Angela who has been my coevents organiser and has helped in making every single event a first class experience, I would be lost without her. So ladies I hope this has given you an insight into what Bezzy Buddies is all about and I hope you come and join us via the website www.bezzybuddies.co.uk Also if you have any queries please don’t hesitate to contact me at info@bezzybuddies.com or on 07901 000014.

HELEN Forrester’s Twopence to Cross the Mersey sets sail on a regional tour of Merseyside, opening at the Epstein Theatre Liverpool (10 to 28 March), followed by visits to Southport Theatre (9 to 11 April) and St Helens Theatre Royal (14 to 16 April), and ending with a trip across the River Mersey to the Floral Pavilion in New Brighton (19 to 23 April). This brand new adaptation tells the true story of a young girl and her formerly wealthy family as they are thrown into poverty during the Great Depression of the 1930s. Leaving behind the servants and comfortable middle-class life in the South West of England, they uproot their shattered lives and choose Liverpool as the place to rebuild their dreams and fortune. Unbeknown to them however, a terrible shock awaits them. Pulse Records Ltd in collaboration with producer and stage writer Rob Fennah and new coproducer Bill Elms bring you a stage version of the former musical that had four hugely successful runs at Liverpool’s Empire Theatre, firstly in 2004 and then returning in 2005, 2007 and 2009. The production features familiar faces of the Liverpool stage, including Eithne Browne, Jake Abrahams and Emma Dears.

MUM’S THE WORD experience that no money can ever buy sleep! That is the one thing all us mums lack. So if in doubt and funds are running low then I would thoroughly recommend giving mum a day off from cooking, cleaning and driving ... oh, and tell her to spend the day in bed! Early mornings are not my thing! As my gift to you I have picked out a few gifts for you and, whether Mum's all about the glamour or she’s a home comforts kind of lady, I’ve got it covered. Black Opium by YSL £43.50 - £80.50 In September of 2014 Yves Saint Laurent launched Black Opium, the new fra-

grance announced as rock'n'roll by YSL brand. The perfume’s bottle is dark and decorated with sequins that give a glam-rock look. A great fragrance for any mum liking orange blossom, jasmine, vanilla, patchouli and cedar. www.boots.com Spa Day This is something that I personally love to do, although I feel I don’t do it enough, and it’s something that you generally wouldn’t spend on yourself, but a really good way of relaxing and taking some time out. There are so many amazing spa deals available online at the moment. Check out some of

their websites - you will most definitely find a great daytime offer or an overnight package if that is also suitable. Nightwear by Very £22.00 Treat your mum to this lovely Sorbet Satin spot pyjama set that features beautiful soft satin with an all over spot print, there is also a matching kimono if you want to spend a bit more. Both set and kimono are priced at £22 each at www.very.co.uk Why not try The Cake In a Mug £7.99 No need for weighing scales, the inside of the mug shows the levels of ingredients required for a deli-

cious, freshly-baked cake in an instant – just follow the simple instructions on the outside of the mug, pop in the microwave and you’ll be feasting on chocolate cake before you know it! http://www.lakeland.c o.uk

ADVERTISING ANNOUNCEMENT

Buying at auction ... by Garry Abrams (Gregory Abrams Davidson LLP, Solicitors) Many buyers at auction only consider the potential saving they can achieve by buying at auction without appreciating the potential pitfalls. It is important that buyers realise that there are significant differences between the normal Conveyancing process and buying at auction. This article examines the legal and practical aspects of buying property at auction and advises as to what should be checked before one bids. Arrangements should be made with the Auctioneers to view the property. A survey or inspection and valuation by a surveyor of the property should be arranged prior to the auction day so you can assess the repairs required and the likely cost and also so that you are aware of the property’s value. The Legal principle of “Let the buyer beware” applies and neither the Seller nor the Auctioneers have a duty to disclose any defects in the structure or fabric of the property. You must obtain a copy of the Auction catalogue which contains details of the properties (“lots”) to be auctioned. You should be able to view these on the Auctioneer’s official website. You should check all the

information including: • The General and Special Conditions of Sale. • The notice to Bidders. • The memorandum of Sale. • The legal pack which contains documents including the Energy Performance Certificate (EPC), title information, searches and leasehold documents. • The guide price, which can change at any time prior to the auction. • The Addendum which reveals additions /amendments to the catalogue. You should also check the Auctioneer’s procedure for: • Proxy, internet or telephone bidding. • Paying the deposit. • Checking ID • VAT –whether payable. • Pre registering your detailswhether necessary. Prior to the auction you should obtain the legal documents. They can normally be obtained from the Auctioneer’s website. The Contract pack should include: an Energy Performance Certificate; office copy entries of the title; local authority search and lease and management information (if

leasehold).Your solicitor should check the papers and advise you if there any issues or there are papers missing so you appreciate the “risk”There can be onerous/unusual special conditions and or defective titles. On the day of the auction you should take with you two forms of identification together with your cheque book and banking details. Some Auctioneers require that you pre-register to bid. Ensure that the Auctioneer can see you. Decide before the auction the limit you are prepared to bid up to and stick to it. If the property doesn’t reach reserve you can approach the Auctioneer’s staff and make/leave a bid either during or after the auction. Once the hammer falls there is a Contract and you are then liable. If you are successful in purchasing a property you will have to sign a Contract and pay a ten per cent deposit. Normally the property is at your risk from exchange thus you will need to arrange for the property to be placed on immediate buildings insurance cover. When contacts are exchanged a completion date is inserted in the Contract which is normally 20 business days after the date of the Auction which is when the balance monies are payable. Some buyers rely on a

mortgage to complete. This can be dangerous as often it takes longer to obtain the mortgage monies than the Contract allows. The alternative is that short term funding is obtained and the property is remortgaged. Normally there needs to be a six months gap.The problem with a mortgage is that a survey will need to be done and the offer issued which will need to be satisfactory and also results of searches will be required which aren’t always available. We offer an auction legal service which means we will check the legal documents and advise you prior to auction. Simply contact

us and send us the legal papers which we will check for a fixed fee.We are very experienced in dealing with auction properties for both buyers and sellers, having given advice at a major property auction for several years on an ongoing basis. STONEYCROFT GET SINKING FEELING WITH ‘DRY JANUARY’ by Mick Titherington A WOEFUL performance against fellow strugglers Collegiate left the Maiden Lane based club in a state of despair. Viewing the January fixtures the anticipation had been that points could be gathered to take them out of the relegation dog fight but the reality proved completely different as they joined with the post festive nondrinkers to make it their own form of ‘dry-January’ with no points to record for the month. To many long-time observers the display was one of the poorest in the club’s history. Despair turned to farce when substitute Joe Daley was shown the red card minutes after coming on to

complete a thoroughly miserable day as the ten men succumbed to a 4-0 defeat. Fortunately the return fixture scheduled for the following week had to be postponed due to the effects of the weather which left them clear to lick their wounds and prepare for the visit of title holders APH. The break certainly did them good as the improvement was something to behold as they showed a character and performance that matched that of the champions. Falling behind to the all too familiar early goal and then conceding a second gave them a mountain to climb but climb it they did as they fought back to draw level

thanks to a brace from an in-form Danny Raggatt. However, the curse of the individual blunder struck again and after a chance to take the lead had been squandered the visitors grabbed two late goals to secure the points. The threat of relegation now looms large over the Croft and with two-thirds of the league programme completed the remaining fixtures are vital if they are to survive. The performance against APH proves what they are capable of but they can’t afford any more slips. Can they do it? Only time will tell.

CRONUS UNDER 9’s REACH CHALLENGE CUP FINAL AFC Cronus Pegasus marched on to the under-10s Challenge cup final with an emphatic 6-2 victory over Holy Rosary Hornets despite only having six players. Three goals from Adam Peters, two from Sam Smith and another from Tom Clayton were enough to seal a great semi-final win for the players. Ongoing unavoidable absences have left the team a player or two short recently but manager Kev Edgar has been reluctant to recruit more players, feeling that the greater challenge for the players was of benefit to them. This was supported by an astonishing 6-0 1st round Alice Petricca Cup win the following Saturday over Green Park Avengers, their main rivals in the division. A hat trick from the outstanding Sam Smith followed by two goals from Adam Peters and an own goal meant the lads progressed to the next round. In both matches players Harvey Edgar, Tom Clayton and Louis Murphy also worked extremely hard to ensure great team performances whilst undermanned. The Cronus Pegasus Sunday team have also recently been in action and after only their second defeat of the season, 3-2 to Cobra FC, they bounced back well in a close game to beat Farmers 5-2 in the Walton and Kirkdale JFL. Goals from Tom Clayton, two from Dylan Crawford and two from Logan Deegan-Hughes meant the boys recorded a great win against a decent Farmers side. The boys are in 1st round cup action on Long Lane against Knowsley South, a team they will be looking for revenge against after

ALDER FC – BIG SUPPORT FOR HOME AND BARGAIN FIXTURE by Peter Harrison WITH the rain and frozen pitches playing havoc to last month’s fixtures there has been very little football played. However, the committee of Alder FC have been hard at work preparing for the quarter final game of the National FA Sunday Cup involving local teams Home and Bargain and Campfield. Both teams play in the Premier Division of the Business Houses League. Home and Bargain, who are based at the Alder club, earned their right to the next stage of the cup with a fine 4-0 away victory to Birkenhead side Queens Park. Goal machine Chris McGann scored a hat trick, with Phil Mason chipping in on the score sheet. At the time of writing the game is still to take place and a large crowd is anticipated for two excellent footballing teams. Alder Ladies football team made history when they reached the final of the Ladies Sunday Challenge cup for the first time. An excellent 5-2 victory against Woolton has set up the final against Merseyrail Ladies. The final is at the Liverpool County headquarters (Walton Hall Park) on the 15th March 2015 with a 12noon kick off. All supporters are welcome – come and cheer the girls on in their quest for cup victory!

their only other defeat of the season, a 2-1 reverse. The match was heavily one-sided with Cronus missing a glut of chances, something the boys will be trying hard to put right this time round. Players (Saturday): Joe Storey, Louis Murphy, Harvey Edgar, Sam Smith, Tom Clayton, Adam Peters Players (Sunday): Luke Miller, Brodie Williams, Ryan Jones, Tom Clayton, Harvey Edgar, Dylan Kendrick, Dylan Crawford, Logan Deegan-Hughes, Joe Smith, Leo McHugh

Nick Walker in action at the recent Mossley Hill game which we won 3-0 and Steve Kelly in action at the same game.

SOUTH PROGRESS TO THE SEMIS by Jim Stanway HAVING made five changes, South Liverpool FC still emerged triumphant from the quarter finals of the West Cheshire League Cup, defeating Chester Nomads at their Boughton Hall ground for the second time this season, with a 2-1 win. Conceding a goal after 2 minutes of the second half, South were ahead in 5 minutes with goals from Alex Woodcock and Andy Walker. The semi-final will be played at South’s home ground on 21st March. South remain unbeaten in the league, defeating third-placed Helsby 3-1 with goals from Alex Woodcock, a superb

shot by Kevin Martin and an own goal. A 3-0 win over Mossley Hill was also achieved during the month with goals buy Elliott Burnett, Alex Woodcock and Cameron Dalton. However, the team have been unable to shake off their rivals for the title, Cammell Laird Reserves, and a title showdown will take place in Birkenhead on 7th March. The reserve team were eliminated from the Liverpool County FA Junior Cup at the quarter final stage, losing 21 at Vulcan Newton, with South’s goal coming from centre half Louis Fay. However the team remain in contention for promotion and despite a 3-2

defeat at rivals FC St. Helens, a 3-2 win over Ford Motors has kept them in a good position with a hat-trick from leading scorer, Ryan McMahon. The youth team still remain in the favourites’ position for the West Cheshire League youth division despite a disappointing 5-2 defeat against main rivals West Kirby. However, this was followed by a hardfought 3-1 win over another rival, Custys, with goals from Alex Griffiths, David Mee and Alex Walsh, the latter two being superb efforts. The team travel to Home and Bargain in the Liverpool County Youth Cup semifinal on 7th March.

GOALIES GALORE! by Bill Chambers HOCKEY goalies are the craziest people in hockey. Who else would stand in a 12 ft by 7 ft box and be shot at by a small hard white ball travelling at 80mph for fun? Perhaps the answer lies in the flashy kit? Before every game they put on 13 pieces of brightly coloured gear including kickers, helmet, throat and groin protectors and body armour! Despite the danger and cost of kit (from £175 to £1805) Liverpool Sefton Hockey Club teams are being overrun by teenagers queuing up to be great goalkeepers. Fourteenyear-old Jasmine Price, pictured, from Liverpool College (and daughter of club sponsor Alex Price) plays In the Women’s 3rds. She was introduced to hockey by the legendary Jean Arnold and nur-

tured by Nat Hannah who teaches at Liverpool College and Liverpool Sefton. Her ambition is to play for England. Last season she played for Lancashire under-21s and was the only South Lancashire player to be picked for the England pathway. She has played for Liverpool Sefton’s first team in cup and friendly matches and is totally obsessed with hockey. In the Men’s 4ths is 17 year old new boy Jack Jones, also of Liverpool College, who despite letting in 68 goals in 15 league matches loves the adrenaline rush and making diving saves. He‘s not too keen on being hit where there’s no padding, though!! Finally we have 14-year-old Eleanor Hall who plays for the newly formed Women’s 5th team.

FULWOOD PICKING UP THE POINTS! by Ian Wignell AFTER a disappointing 3rd round cup exit to Eagle FC, beaten 5-0 by a team two divisions above them, Fulwood Arms FC’s next league encounter was an away trip to bottom of the league Liver Sports FC. Fulwood got off to a flying start in an attacking 3-52 formation and it wasn’t long before striker Adam Ramsey had put Fulwood 10 up with a close range fin-

ish. Shortly after this Benjamin Foster showed great speed and willingness to keep the ball in play and pulled the ball back to the edge of the box for playermanager Wignell to smash the ball in at the near post to beat the Liver Sports keeper. The third came from Daniel O’Brien, a great first time volley from a Foster cross. The second half saw Fulwood get off to a sloppy start, conceding a penalty

for an Andrew Hayes handball, only to see Fulwood goalie Joe Blackburn save his fifth penalty of the season, a club record. Liver Sports managed to get one back before Daniel Lawrence scored his third goal of the season from a corner kick and then Adam Ramsey brilliantly netted his second and Fulwood’s fifth with a spectacularly executed individual goal. The game finished 5-1 to Fulwood Arms FC.

John Ward after coming close in front of goal.
