TEEMING WITH FISH
STRANGE TALES by Anton Valdemart
by Stephen Guy
For centuries the River Mersey was criss-crossed by many fishing boats – nets would be filled with numerous species that filled the muddy waters refreshed
by each tide. Other sea life included whales and seals. Vast flocks of seabirds filled the air. Otterspool was named after the frisky mammals that fed on the plentiful fish. They are beautiful-

renovations carried out in 2007 to commemorate the 800th anniversary of Liverpool’s Royal Charter. At the time of King John’s charter monks from Stanlow Abbey, on the opposite side of the river, held the fishing rights. In the late 17th century the Mersey was teeming with fish and supplied towns and villages up to 20 miles away. More than 40 varieties were recorded including sturgeon. Salmon were so plentiful off Otterspool that they were fed to the pigs. In 1779 industry came to the area when a snuff mill was built.
The development of Liverpool and other towns saw increasing pollution of the Mersey although fishing continued. Until the middle of the 19th century fishermen’s cottages dotted the Otterspool coast. One of the last fishermen lived at the end of Jericho Lane until 1927. At this time the area was changing rapidly following the purchase of the Otterspool estate by Liverpool Corporation. The Promenade was the idea of Liverpool’s visionary city engineer John Brodie in 1919. It took many
years to become a reality. Asea wall was built between the wars. Once this was complete, the original shoreline was obliterated by domestic waste and rubble excavated from the first Mersey road tunnel. The works provided employment for many during the darkest days of the depression. After the Second World War more waste was dumped for the extension of the wall northwards. The debris included the remains of bombed buildings, old air-raid shelters and later ma-
terial excavated for the second Mersey Tunnel opened in 1971. Seventy acres of land was reclaimed, some being used for t h e p o p u l a r International Garden Festival in 1984. I remember atmospheric Jericho Farm which was demolished before the construction of the new road to the city centre. • Learn more about the history of Liverpool at the M u s e u m o f Liverpool, PierHead, open 10 am to 5 pm every day, admission free.

www.liverpoollink.co.uk I am one of six siblings and Colette was the oldest of us. She was completely and selflessly devoted to the family and will be dearly, dearly missed by all of us. Growing up, she was always the proud and protective oldest sister and, throughout her life, she would always do anything and everything to help and support me, my sisters and brothers and the extended family. She only ever saw the good in people. On the evening of 4th June, Colette rang me at home and told me that she was in such pain and discomfort that she was going to the Royal (Hospital) straight away and, naturally, I went there with her. She was diagnosed with cancer within a matter of days and we lost her on the 27th August. Characteristically, Colette faced up to this with courage, character, dignity and spirit but the fact that we have lost her so suddenly and at such a relatively young age has left us all feeling rather like a tsunami has torn through our lives. Colette was a free spirit who loved nature and the arts, especially literature, languages and history, and when Dawn and I started the LINK back in 2006
A TRIBUTE TO MY LOVELY SISTER by Moira Hesketh (co-owner, The LINK)
My dear sister Colette (McKenna) died last month aged just 61 and, in using the pages of the LINK to pay tribute to her, I am also hoping to
raise awareness of ovarian cancer and to praise the wonderful work done by the Liverpool Women’s Hospital (Wards G1 & G2).

Colette immediately offered her services in whatever capacity we might require. As was typical of her, she did not want paying for any of this. Over the years, she has helped with the checking of editorial and has written a huge number of features in the LINK about a wide-ranging variety of topics and these have attracted praise and compliments from a great many of you, readers and advertisers alike. Many of these features have appeared year-byyear, and will continue to do so, and she has contributed articles on such topics as Easter, Christmas, Guy Fawkes Night, Mother’s Day & Father’s Day, Chinese New Year to name but a few and her feature on Halloween appears in this edition. She also wrote evocatively, touchingly and humorously in the Walton Link about our days growing up in the Walton area. Colette often helped me with the delivery of the LINK to advertisers in South Liverpool and at the end of May, only about 10 days before she was diagnosed with cancer, she was out helping me deliver the LINK - something I will never forget. Thank you for
everything, Col, thank you. From the Royal, Colette was transferred to the L i v e r p o o l Wo m e n ’s Hospital and spent the last 8 weeks of her life there. She really could not have had better care or been in better surrounds and this is something which we as a family find great comfort in. So a very big thank you to all the staff there for all their care, compassion and devotion. Colette spent the last five days of her life in the hospital’s Mulberry Suite (incorporating reclining chairs, kitchen, shower room, etc.) and these marvellous facilities meant that the whole family were able to stay with her constantly, 24 hours a day, during this time. This is a considerable source of additional comfort to us during what has been, and still is, a terrible time in our lives. The privately-funded Mulberry Suite was officially declared open by Sue Johnston in 2009 and gives comfort, dignity and privacy to terminally-ill patients and their families and we are so, so grateful that this facility was made available to Colette. The hospital is planning to open another similar unit (“The Orchid Suite”) to enable
more families to comfort and accompany their loved ones. Funding is being sought and my family and I are determined to assist in whatever ways we can. If any reader would like to donate to this wonderful cause, then all donations (no matter how small) will be gratefully appreciated and can be sent to Moira Hesketh, Liverpool Link, PO Box 170, Liverpool, L25 7WX (payable to “EVOC-Orchid Room”). My family and I would like to thank all our many friends and relatives for your kindness and support at this time. We would also like to express our thanks to Paul McNicholl (Deacon St. Charles Borromeo) for a beautiful service. Finally we would like to thank Peter and Lorraine Coyne (Peter Coyne Independent Funeral Service) for their personal, professional and compassionate attention to the funeral arrangements.

The Celts celebrated their dead in pagan rituals long before Christianity made it’s presence felt and, as with so many other festivities, the pagan tradition combined with the church tradition to give the day a flavour all of it’s own. Of course, what would Hallowe’en be without seasonal goodies such as roast chestnuts, toffee apples or, in Ireland, the traditional barmbrack (fruit bread). Added to these, the growing popularity of American treats such as pumpkin soup and pumpkin pie now makes Hallowe’en a truly multi-cultural affair, with fun for everyone. “Trick or treat” is a recent American import which arouses mixed feelings but we, of course, have our old customs such as “duck-apple” or “apple-bobbing”, which can be great fun for all the family, and every home should have it’s
own jack-o-lantern, of course – an eerily carved turnip or pumpkin with a candle inside it to complete the ghostly effect. This is believed to be a relic from the Celtic past when every home would light a candle to show the way home to spirits revisiting the earth for the day so the jack-olantern very much symbolises the ancient and modern aspects of

It’s that time of year again – but Hallowe’en (orEve of All Hallows) means daifferent things to different people. The early Christian church saw it as a day to celebrate the saints and it was also known as All Saints Day.

THINKING OF ADOPTION? Families that Last are encouraging prospective parents to consider adoption as a way to build their family. Everyone deserves to be part of a ‘forever family’. Families that Last finds permanent and loving homes for some of the 4,600 children waiting in the care system. They may be older children or children
with complex health needs. These children really need a family that is prepared to offer them the love and commitment they deserve. We believe that with the right support you can give these children the future they deserve. Our Families that Last team have extensive experience of finding stable homes for children who
would otherwise remain in the care system. We provide ongoing adoption support for as long as adoptive families need it. This includes our SafeBase parenting programme that helps ensure families get off to the best start. This year there have been changes to the assessment process for prospective adopters, creating a more efficient process and allowing more children
to be adopted with less delay. Get in touch with our Families that Last team today to find out more about the new adoption process and how you can start or grow your family. GET FIGHTING FIT by Paul Coshott WATER INTAKE: THE BASICS • Water is an essential nutrient, and drinking too little can significantly affect how you feel and perform at home, at work and in the gym. • While minimal levels of dehydration probably won’t impact performance, higher levels of dehydration have a significant negative impact on exercise perform-

Endurance athletes and others training at high levels may benefit from the addition of carbohydrate and electrolyte
• The amount of fluid you should consume varies from person to person and depends on a number of factors including level of fitness, weather conditions, activity and sweat rate. • Recommendation: in general, you should drink enough fluid during the day so your urine is clear (dark

A month later he was given a similar task by his master. This time he found the gates unlocked with no sign of Alderman Hummingbird.
Roderick warily passed through and walked uneasily along the path. Dark clouds raced overhead and an eerie breeze ruffled the sinister shrubbery. Then he saw two large bloodshot eyes staring at him intently through the leaves. He quickened his pace and was alarmed to hear heavy footsteps stalking alongside him in the
gloom. An awful stench filled the air. Roderick broke into a run as the hidden beast sprinted behind him. Just as he cleared the woods to safety he saw a big gold chain hanging from a branch, clanking in the wind. • Read my next Strange Tale – An Egg Without Salt – in the November Link.

STYLE IN THE SUBURBS
Situated in the heart of leafy south Liverpool’s community, Sudley House invites you to explore its impressive art collection and popular new exhibitions this autumn, while taking in the unique historical surroundings.
Don’t miss An Age of Confidence, a collection of photographs by the architectural photography company Bedford Lemere & Co. The photographs capture Merseyside at a time when prosperity and civic pride gave rise to a wave of iconic new buildings across the region. This free exhibition,
developed in collaboration with English Heritage, displays photographs of a wide range of people and places across Liverpool and Wirral, from Cammell Laird to Port Sunlight Village. Highlights include images of the resident orchestra at the Adelphi Hotel, the Trading Hall at
Liverpool C o t t o n Exchange and a photograph of the Lord S t r e e t Arcade, famously designed by Wa l t e r Aubrey Thomas, who also designed
the Royal Liver Building. There’s also the chance to see 20th Century Chic, a fabulous insight into 100 years of women’s fashion. A glamorous selection of ladies evening outfits are on display, dating from 1900 to 2000. Don’t forget to end your visit by relaxing in our homely tea room, which serves a selection of soups, salads and freshly m a d e sandwiches, a s well a s a tempting selection of cakes and pastries.

ALDER FC - WATTS LADS TURN ON THE POWER by Peter Harrison On Saturday 31st August, manager Paul Watts took a combined over 35 Veterans team to the first ever North West Vets Tournament. Three group stage wins against Frodsham, Drury and Chorlton saw them comfortably through to the quarter-final where a solid performance brought a semi-final against another Liverpool side Sefton Vets, who won their quarter final 5-0.
STONEYCROFT SEEK NEW BOSS AFTER SHOCK RESIGNATION by Mick Titherington L C P L P re m i e r Division side Stoneycroft were sent reeling with the shock resignation of their boss of three years, John Leary. Leary was forced to relinquish the post because of pressing business commitments and he felt he could not devote the time necessary to do justice to the manager’s role. The Club has already commenced the search for a replacement and have advertised the post. In the meantime Kenny Morrison and Mick Titherington will fill the gap in a caretaker capacity. On the playing front after a series of reversals the team recorded their first victory of the campaign scoring twice in the last ten minutes to come from behind at Pinewoods to take all three points in a first class team display. Paul Finnegan played a captain’s role in leading the team by example to earn himself the man of the match award. The first goal came when substitute Mick Kearns latched on to an excellent through ball and delightfully lobbed the ball over the advancing goalkeeper. The second came from the boot of last season’s top scorer Mike Kinney with a beauti-
fully crafted curler in to the top corner of the Pinewoods’ net. This season’s new signings are beginning to make their mark with improving displays from Brian Porter and Jack Kelsall whilst youngster Callum Walker is showing great potential. Sadly the ‘Croft’ could not manage a result against a powerful Waterloo Dock side when the teams met at Maiden Lane the following week. A nicely worked move and a clinical finish saw the ‘Dock’take the lead after three minutes raising fears amongst the home crowd. However the new found determination saw the home side weather the early storm to complete a competitive first half. The second period was a more evenly fought contest as the home side endeavoured to rescue the situation only to see a defensive lapse allow the visitors to net a second and secure all three points. Impressive first appearances from new signings Paul Jewell and James Cowhig, both coming on as second half substitutes, were among the positives to take from the game for the Maiden Lane crew. Next week’s fixture sees South Liverpool as the visitors in a first round Liverpool Challenge Cup encounter.
Another great team performance saw Sefton brushed aside 3-0. In the final the opposition were Bolton side Pineapple, many peoples’ favourite to win the competition. A tight first half saw Alder take a 1-0 lead which they built on in a great second half performance with the winning goal coming from golden boot winner John Garrity. John scored 7 goals on the day and Damien Lewis, who played in every game, walked away with the Player of the Tournament award. A massive thanks to Halewood
FC boys Lee Turkington, Kevin Pattinson and Jimmy Aerabi who gave great performances in every game and played a massive part in winning the cup. A quick mention also to new keeper Mike Bolton and Paul Barnes for their performances. And many thanks and good luck to Frodsham Vets, who put on a fantastic day to raise much needed funds and awareness to increase the chances of better facilities for local kids. The opening day of the Vets league season saw them march to a
6-1 away defeat of De La Salle. Steve Stewart was the hit marksman with 4 goals, with Mick Russell and a great diving header from Jim Davis completing the scoring. The team pictured are: Mike Bolton, Lee Turkington (Halewood), Kevin Pattinson (Halewood), Jimmy Aerabi (Halewood), Kev Walsh (capt), Lee Hunter, Gary Summers, John Boyd, Charlie Boyd, Damien Lewis, Paul Brown, Jay Taylor, Alan Brookeman, Phil Farrelly and John Garrity.

two goals for Alex Woodcock, last season’s leading first team goalscorer, on his return from injury and holiday.
Despite having an exacting start to the season, South Liverpool FC have had an excellent August, with both the first team and the reserves heading their respective divisions on at least one occasion.
SOUTH GET OFF TO A FLYER by Jim Stanway
South started their f i r s t e v e r We s t Cheshire League first division season with a comfortable 3-0 home win against fellow promotees Mallaby, with goals from captain Adam Rood, centre forward Cameron Dalton and midfielder Elliott Burnett. With a striker shortage in the next game against rivals Maghull, the team struggled to break down a revamped Maghull team and, getting caught twice on the break, lost 3-1. However, an excellent 2-0 win at Vauxhall Motors Reserves, with a first competitive goal for new striker Carl Gargan, and a comprehensive 5-0 home win over Upton AA

with a hat-trick from the pacy Gary Pollard, put the team at the top of the league. Further wins by 21 at home to champions Heswall and 2-0 at Ashville saw a 3-point gap open up at the top of the table. However, a 5-2 defeat at Cammell Laird Reserves, where several defensive errors proved fatal, and a free Saturday on 14 September saw the team relinquish their lead at the top with main rivals Maghull winning three games in the same time period. Nevertheless, such a start is better than could have been predicted as the team now start their Challenge Cup campaign at Stoneycroft. The reserves have had a great start to their season and head the table at the time of writing, with seven wins out of eight games in the West Cheshire League third division, scoring 33 goals in the process. They recorded a superb 4-2 win at Ford Motors on the opening day of the season (against opposition who were last season playing in the premier division of the Liverpool County Premier League). Two goals from Curtis Cummins on his return to the club and one each from Francis Evans and James Welsh saw the team get off to a cracking start. A close 2-1 win at home to Belfry, with goals from Cummins and midfielder Neil Roach, followed an easy 9-2 win at lowly Upton AA Reserves with hat-tricks for Cummins and Paul
Wilson. A 2-0 defeat at Bootle Reserves, where the team ended the game with nine men, has been the only blip. The following games all saw comprehensive wins; a 31 home win against Merseyside Police, with another two goals
from Cummins; a 5-2 home win against Neston Nomads, with two goals from last season’s youth team striker Sharif Yusuf; a 6-1 home win against Marshalls Reserves, with a further two goals from Yusuf, and a 4-1 home win over Chester Nomads Reserves with
The youth team, an entirely new squad of players, most of whom had won the Tuebrook Junior Under-16s title last season, have started without a win to date. A close 3-2 def e a t a t Va u x h a l l Motors, with goals from Craig Byrne and Jamie Clair, was followed by a 1-1 home draw with West Kirby, with another goal from Craig Byrne. The club’s ladies team have played their very first league game under the club’s name but, unfortunately, lost a nine-goal thriller 54 with the team’s striker Claire Piercy scoring all four of the team’s goals to put her name into the club’s record books.
